Usually for breakfast I will go to the Original Pollo because they have an excellent breakfast burrito. (But it's $10). However, on my way there I noticed somebody chomping down on this giant breakfast burrito from the Sandwich Zone. So I puttered in to give it a try instead. Pretty great set up inside, very much like a mom and pop shop. Usually there are only two or three people working. I assume it's the owner and their spouse, and then maybe a third person to run the register. The breakfast burrito I ordered was good, not over salted, and just enough room to add on seasoning if you'd like, or a hot sauce of some kind of seasoning or hot sauce to kick it up a notch. It was a great size to. A lot of restaurants really know how to mess up a very basic breakfast burrito. It's nice that the sandwich Zone chooses to actually put ingredients inside, not just egg and cheese. They had a variety of other options as well, like breakfast sandwiches, and your standard egg muffins. They also had a pretty solid selection of different Bagels, as well as Bagel sandwiches and spreads. Probably not the greatest breakfast burrito I've ever had, however for $5bucks, the sandwiches are really nailed it. This is the "Stuffed Inn" of the west side of the Berkeley campus. I mean this as a compliment, as their sandwiches are just as good and as inexpensive as Stuffed Inn. They have an large assortment of food items you can choose from such as bagels, salads, sandwich breads and meats, drinks, soups of the day, the whole "sha-bang" of a sandwich bagel deli place. You can customize your sandwich and bagel orders with the huge assortment of deli meats, cheeses, veggies, shmears, and etc. But if that's too much to handle you can always go with their pre-customized sandwiches named a particular nickname (just like the pre-customized list Stuffed Inn has). My go-to is "Richard's Dogwood", which is turkey, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado on bread of your choosing. The ingredients are all very fresh, in my opinion even more fresh than Stuffed Inn. Oh did I mention they also have a good assortment of breakfast items such as the typical bagel to breakfast sandwiches to even a breakfast burrito? The store itself is the typical mom-and-pop sandwich place, a bit cramped cafe table seatings on the main floor. But they do have a small second floor overlooking things which is nice. I also tried their breakfast sandwich, which was not bad, but unmemorable. The restaurant is located at what seems like the perfect place for a cafe, with a nice upstairs sitting area. Unfortunately, it is crammed with boxes, so it is best to just get your food to go. They also close surprisingly early, so I can never catch them for dinner. Putting in an order is simple.. when you walk in the door, there's a jar of pencils and smells sheets of paper with the menu on it. Circle what you want and bring it up to the register where they'll ring you up. You'll need to buy at least $5 worth for debit/credit otherwise you have to pay cash. Very good prices on respectably good sandwiches. Not Cafe Intermezzo quality, but still quite good (and they were very generous with the avocado on my veggie sandwich). As Andrew K. notes, they have a good array of chips, and also mountains of apples and bananas. As for ambiance, the place definitely feels family run (though I don't know if that's really the case). It's very cozy, in that cluttered-but-clean kind of way. I have stopped here many times for either a bottled water or a bag of chips on the way home, in-between classes at Berkeley City College, or before heading to classes over the hill to UC Berkeley. I have had the roast beef sandwiches so far here at the Sandwich Zone. Rare roast beef, Swiss Cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, light mayonnaise, and light Dijon mustard is my litmus test. I am delighted to report Sandwich Zone passed the my litmus test! I like the method of ordering sandwiches here. You take an order form and pencil, choose the bread, meat, and condiments, and give the order form to the cashier at the till who will go over the order form before ringing up the price. You are given a number and when the sandwich is ready, your number is called and you go claim your sandwich. Easy peasy. You're good to go whether you decide to takeaway or eat in--I do agree with the other reviews that seating is limited here. I do believe this is a family-owned and operated business. The owners are very serious and nice at the same time. Their young son rang up my bag of chips in a professional and polite manner beyond his years. Their employees are quite pleasant and friendly. Basically, if I'm in a hurry, need a meal to last me ~5 hours at work, and don't want to spend over $5, I go here. I always get the cold sandwich ($3.99 flat) pastrami on dutch crunch, pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, red onions, mustard, mayo. The sandwich is about 7 inches in length and a 1 pounder. It's definitely a deal over Subway across the street. They wrap it in paper & saran wrap to make sure your sandwich doesn't fall apart or leach juices in transit. So when I get around to eating it 3 hours later, it's still as good as it was when I bought it. The cashier will ring you up real quick and with your meal (brown bagged and all), you'll be ready to tackle the rest of your day. read more
