    The #2 Combo

The Original Pollo is a great price performer. Good food for a good price. That's hard to find these days. #2 Combo of eggs, sausage/bacon and a waffle is under $13.

Breakfast Burrito with sausage and hot salsa

Original Pollo's breakfast burritos are perfectly cooked and the restaurant is such a cozy, homey spot. The only downside is that the food takes a while to make, especially if it's busy. But the fact that it's so relaxed makes it a great place to chill out. You could study, catch up with friends, and more. It's quite comfortable. I definitely recommend the bacon breakfast burrito as I felt I got more protein out of it as opposed to the breakfast sausage option I got last time. It also tasted much better.

This review is solely based on the breakfast burrito. I love a solid breakfast burrito and am always on the hunt for one. I've been in Berkeley for many years and can't believe I'm finally giving this place a try. It's been around for a looong time. This is a small spot and is run by the owner and maybe 1-2 other staff. I came in on a Thursday around 10:30 am and waited for about 20 minutes for my burrito. The owner takes orders and also helps prep food. He was super friendly and knew all the regulars' orders. There was only one other cook at the stove. It did take longer than I expected, but the food was piping hot and delicious. The burrito was massive and stuffed. I added sausage for an extra $2-3. I do wish there was more sausage in the burrito given the additional cost. The potatoes are home fries rather than hashbrowns, which I actually quite enjoyed. I also asked for salsa in my burrito, but you can ask for it on the side. The total came to around $13 after tax and lasted me 2.5 meals. This place is my new go to for breakfast burritos, but I would consider calling ahead of time if wanting to have a quick grab and go meal.

Love, love, love this place. Their breakfast burritos ate the best. Fillowed up by their waffles. The owner is very friendly and welcomes you with a smile. They are dog friendly and handicap accessible.

    6. Breakfast Burrito

The Breakfast burrito is awful. The burrito is packed with potatoes that are extremely undercooked, not seasoned, and hard. Also found random piece of mushroom or something. The object is hard and brown which caught me off guard. I will not be returning. The also service isn't that friendly. Please save your money

Original Pollo is an old school amazing place. The food is amazing and it is one of my favorite places in Berkeley. I have had many different meals there over the years and I have never been disappointed there. Love the people that work there. It is a truly great place in Berkeley and a gem.

It was as basic as basic gets, but it was good, hearty eating and sometimes that's all you need, especially if you're a Cal undergrad on a limited budget. I haven't been an undergrad since I was knee-high to a man, but Jamie W. and I were milling about the youth of Berkeley and landed here for lunch. The owner was pretty friendly and the place definitely had some regulars hanging out and chatting him up. It was a pretty straightforward menu centered around their specialties, beef gyros and chicken kabobs. If I was barely twenty and unconcerned about my metabolism, I probably would've gone for a burrito and a hot plate. But of course, we focused on the salad options. Jamie went for the $9.95 Gyros Salad (photo: http://bit.ly/39rZFOV), while I had the $9.95 Chicken Kabob Salad (photo: http://bit.ly/31Fq4pt) - both robust bowls made identically with lettuce, tomato, diced onion, and full of meat. We both got a few pita wedges with plenty of tzatziki sauce (photo: http://bit.ly/31LxYhd). It was nothing extraordinary but it was plenty satisfying for hungry undergrads like us. Oh wait, that ain't us. FOOD - 3 stars...solid meat salads, that's it AMBIANCE - 3 stars...a lot of Fingerhut tchotchkes in here SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly TOTAL - 3 stars...student-priced meaty salads RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? For our drinks, I had the Moonlight Blossom, my aunt had a glass of red wine, and my mom had a cucumber mint spritzer (mocktail as she was the DD). The moonlight blossom tasted similar to cherry limeade. The entrees we had were the mussels, veggie burger, and the chef's market pizza. The mussels themselves were tasty and appreciated that they were able to leave out the chorizo. However, I wish that they brought a spoon and there was more broth. I tried some of my mom's veggie burger and the red color from the beets made it stand out from the usual veggie burger. The fries tasted homemade. I had a slice of the pizza and while I like the ingredients themselves, the combination just didn't do it for me. The crust was good though! We also shared a green goddess salad, which was tasty. The desserts looked amazing but we had no room! Service was friendly and our waitress made good recommendations. Can park on the side streets or the garage. Restaurant was not noisy. Would come back to try other items, especially dessert.

The vegan cheese was yummy and the spice level of the pizza was just right. The pizza was packed with flavor and thin crust! My friend liked the shakshouka too. Wood Tavern met the criteria for a relatively nice American restaurant in North Oakland. We visited for lunch and wanted to make this special for our mom, so we were perhaps a bit overdressed in business casual, but this is Oakland after all. On an ordinary Thursday, there were multiple groups waiting outside for the restaurant to open at 11:30 AM. That in itself should tell you how popular this place is. My wife and I dined at sister restaurant Southie next door a few years ago and really enjoyed it (I also rated it five stars on Yelp), so I was confident Wood Tavern would not disappoint. I initially booked our reservation using OpenTable to link it to my account and get 100 points. Since the max party size for Wood Tavern on OpenTable is four, I had to call to get it changed to eight. Due to the large party size, the restaurant also required me to give them my credit card info and be subject to a $25 per person no-show fee. Upon arrival, our tables were ready for us in the back corner near the open kitchen. The restaurant is true to its name with a shared bar and dining room space that evoke the feel of a wood tavern. Here's what we had: Wine of the Day * Rosé (100% Zweigelt), Stefan Pratsch, Niederösterreich, Austria, 2024 ($16) "N/A Libations" and other drinks * Cherry Bomb! non-alcoholic cocktail ($13) - Tilden Lacewing, Amarena cherry, lime, ginger beer, tall glass * Shirley Temple ($5) * Diet Coke ($5) * Iced Tea ($4) Soup & Salad * Red & Golden Beet Salad x2 ($16 each, one with fish added for $8) - frisee, castelfranco, pistachios, orange segments, Laura Chenel goat cheese, Cara Cara orange vinaigrette Sandwiches * The Hot Pastrami x2 ($25 each) - Emmentaler cheese, Dijon-horseradish dressing, La Farine baguette Old Reliables * Seafood Stew ($32) - rock cod, Manila clams, PEI mussels, calamari, butter beans, fennel, leeks, chili flakes, garlic toast * Pork Ragu Casarecce ($30) - Castelvetrano olives, Pecorino Romano, Grana Padano, chili flakes, parsley * Tavern Burger with French Fries on Acme Soft Bun with All the Fixins x3 ($25 each, two with cheddar added for $2 each) Everything was excellent. As for what to order, I recommend all of the dishes we got. It really just depends on what you like and/or what you're in the mood for. Everyone loved the food. The beet salad was fresh and flavorful, the pastrami was one of the best I've had anywhere, my mom raved about the seafood stew, my brother-in-law gobbled up all of the casarecce, and the burger was outstanding. Service was polite and speedy. Our server Sophia C was awesome. We split one of the salads and the stew, so they came out plated and served in half portions which was nice of the kitchen staff to do.

The sauce it was paired with was the wow factor and we even asked for more. The bulgogi on both the bulgogi bowl and bulgogi scramble was tender and had a tasty marinade. I would had wished the bulgogi scramble didn't have as much red onion. I was surprised with the sweet potato tots option and that didn't disappoint. The spicy pork sandwich was elevated and balanced out with the kimchi slaw and cucumber combo. We finished with the Crunch French toast and it was perfection! Fluffy inside but a crunchy outside. The hostess was welcoming, and the staff who brought out our food were friendly. Unfortunately, our server provided a very different experience. When we asked for appetizer recommendations, he simply repeated the menu items without offering any suggestions. Throughout the meal, he never checked on our table, even though we noticed him checking on the surrounding tables several times. At one point, the patio umbrella unexpectedly fell near our table. Instead of first asking if everyone was okay, his only response was, "Do you mind if I close the umbrella?" That was disappointing and made us feel overlooked. The only time his attitude became noticeably friendlier was when he brought the check. We happened to be the only Asian table that afternoon. While I can't say for certain why our experience felt different, the contrast in service left us feeling unwelcome. I hope every customer receives the same level of care and attention.
