    The #2 Combo

The Original Pollo is a great price performer. Good food for a good price. That's hard to find these days. #2 Combo of eggs, sausage/bacon and a waffle is under $13.

Breakfast Burrito with sausage and hot salsa

Original Pollo's breakfast burritos are perfectly cooked and the restaurant is such a cozy, homey spot. The only downside is that the food takes a while to make, especially if it's busy. But the fact that it's so relaxed makes it a great place to chill out. You could study, catch up with friends, and more. It's quite comfortable. I definitely recommend the bacon breakfast burrito as I felt I got more protein out of it as opposed to the breakfast sausage option I got last time. It also tasted much better.

This review is solely based on the breakfast burrito. I love a solid breakfast burrito and am always on the hunt for one. I've been in Berkeley for many years and can't believe I'm finally giving this place a try. It's been around for a looong time. This is a small spot and is run by the owner and maybe 1-2 other staff. I came in on a Thursday around 10:30 am and waited for about 20 minutes for my burrito. The owner takes orders and also helps prep food. He was super friendly and knew all the regulars' orders. There was only one other cook at the stove. It did take longer than I expected, but the food was piping hot and delicious. The burrito was massive and stuffed. I added sausage for an extra $2-3. I do wish there was more sausage in the burrito given the additional cost. The potatoes are home fries rather than hashbrowns, which I actually quite enjoyed. I also asked for salsa in my burrito, but you can ask for it on the side. The total came to around $13 after tax and lasted me 2.5 meals. This place is my new go to for breakfast burritos, but I would consider calling ahead of time if wanting to have a quick grab and go meal.

Love, love, love this place. Their breakfast burritos ate the best. Fillowed up by their waffles. The owner is very friendly and welcomes you with a smile. They are dog friendly and handicap accessible.

    6. Breakfast Burrito

The Breakfast burrito is awful. The burrito is packed with potatoes that are extremely undercooked, not seasoned, and hard. Also found random piece of mushroom or something. The object is hard and brown which caught me off guard. I will not be returning. The also service isn't that friendly. Please save your money

Original Pollo is an old school amazing place. The food is amazing and it is one of my favorite places in Berkeley. I have had many different meals there over the years and I have never been disappointed there. Love the people that work there. It is a truly great place in Berkeley and a gem.

It was as basic as basic gets, but it was good, hearty eating and sometimes that's all you need, especially if you're a Cal undergrad on a limited budget. I haven't been an undergrad since I was knee-high to a man, but Jamie W. and I were milling about the youth of Berkeley and landed here for lunch. The owner was pretty friendly and the place definitely had some regulars hanging out and chatting him up. It was a pretty straightforward menu centered around their specialties, beef gyros and chicken kabobs. If I was barely twenty and unconcerned about my metabolism, I probably would've gone for a burrito and a hot plate. But of course, we focused on the salad options. Jamie went for the $9.95 Gyros Salad (photo: http://bit.ly/39rZFOV), while I had the $9.95 Chicken Kabob Salad (photo: http://bit.ly/31Fq4pt) - both robust bowls made identically with lettuce, tomato, diced onion, and full of meat. We both got a few pita wedges with plenty of tzatziki sauce (photo: http://bit.ly/31LxYhd). It was nothing extraordinary but it was plenty satisfying for hungry undergrads like us. Oh wait, that ain't us. FOOD - 3 stars...solid meat salads, that's it AMBIANCE - 3 stars...a lot of Fingerhut tchotchkes in here SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly TOTAL - 3 stars...student-priced meaty salads RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.

Taste very coconutty and creamy, not too sweet or spicy! I don't mind it but I am sure if other customers have certain food allergens or germaphobe I would be more cautious and do cross contamination . Provide tongs for the workers. can't wait to come back and try other sandwiches on the menu!

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

Their food selection is also better than you'd expect from a coffee shop. In addition to coffee and pastries, they offer cakes, breakfast items, and a variety of other snacks and treats, so there's always something to pair with your drink. Their hours are convenient, making it easy to stop by throughout the day. The only area where I think there's room for improvement is cleanliness. I've noticed on several occasions that when I arrive shortly after opening--sometimes within 30 minutes to an hour--there are still crumbs on the chairs, tables, and floor, even when there haven't been many customers yet. First impressions matter, and the café should be fully cleaned and ready for guests before the doors open. Customers shouldn't have to wipe down their own tables before sitting. Overall, I really enjoy coming here and would absolutely recommend it for the atmosphere, Wi-Fi, seating, and food options. With a little more attention to cleanliness before opening each day, it would be an even better experience.
