We came to Sandy's to try their new Colombian menu and it was really good. My wife got the bandeja paisa and I had the patacón con carne and a morcilla. Everything was super flavorful and tasted legit. Honestly, Gainesville needed a good Colombian spot and this definitely fills that gap. Ordered and paid online and received 12:28 confirmation that gyro would be ready at 1 pm. At one, waited 8 minutes for cook to tell me server was in the restroom. When she arrived I let her know I was there for pickup, she asks cook and lets me know they don't have order, then takes order by phone (2 gyros, one chicken) and assists a walk in (2 cheeseburgers, one no onions). I ask about my meal and I hear cook tell her orders go through the owner who's not there. She tells me he's texting owner as though I couldn't see he wasn't. Service was great as always and one of my local favorites. Unfortunately we had some issues with the quality of our food. We ordered the skirt steak but tasted spoiled. Burger was mediocre. Wife had an open face turkey sandwich. That was no better than Oscar Meyer packaged deli meat. Our waitress could barely speak English when he told her the meal was poor quality. She said OK giggled and walked away. Clearly she could not speak enough English to hold a conversation. There was only one waitress and five parties and she could not keep up with that business. I highly disappointed in Sandy's as I've gone here for years! It was my late grandpa's favorite restaurant so we spent many family outings here. I was craving a good chicken Cesar salad and was nearby so I automatically thought of them and ordered for take out. Upon my arrival I was almost not provided with dressing or utensils had I not checked! I was never provided a total over the phone only to find out I would pay $19 for a grilled chicken salad! There isn't even the same amount of chicken that used to be provided for this outrageous price. unfortunately I will definitely not be spending my money at this establishment any longer. Location: located in a square with many parking spaces. When we first went in, we thought we found the wrong place. We read this was "Greek" but the vibe here is completely retro American diner/bar Food: I appreciate there were platters where you can try multiple types of food. Their most popular is the Spinach Pie and usually is out of stock. This was really good. The feta with the spinach was a good combination. I have to say, it was slightly an acquired taste. When I took my first bite, I couldn't decide if I liked it or not but after my second, I got taken with it especially when it came with huge chunks of feta. The chicken was seasoned and cooked well and the salad seemed average to me, with a balsamic-based sauce. The pita with tzatziki was actually a good combo to me. Sandy's Place is a quaint little Greek restaurant. The servers are nice, the patrons love it. As I walked in, a lady at the counter asked the bartender for a favor, amd then I saw a head nod. One other lady was talking to one of the servers as she left; they just stood there and caught up. It gave me the feeling that this is a neighborhood, I-grew-up-with-that-place kind of eatery. It is sonessy to drive by this place, as it has a neon sign out front, it is tucked away in the plaza behind El Indio 2...you'll see it. I just needed something nice to hit that spot in my tummy! A gyro and fries seemed perfect. I ordered, and sat around and played on my phone for a bit, while my food was made fresh. The sandwich was hot and thr fries were right oitta the oil! Wow! Love that aroma! This place seems like it could be a date place, or even a gathering of friends! A nice way to eat and relax and have something satisfying that is not a burger! This is a solid American food spot. I called in an order for wings. I got ten. They have options to get them breaded /unbreaded and hot/mild. I chose to get five and five and got both mild and hot sauce on the side. I usually prefer my wings breaded, but surprisingly I preferred the unbreaded ones. They were extra crunchy like I like my wings. The size is great --not super small like Liliputian size but not ridiculously -hormone fed freakishly large chicken either. Got a gyro lunch and some hot breaded wings for takeout. The last time I got this same fare from Sandy's was at least 5 years ago, and to my delight it's still just as good. The wings aren't puny, big-box "dwarf" chicken wings, they're a decent size. There's breading, but not so much that it's caked on, and the seasoning of the breading is minimal. The hot sauce is pretty standard Buffalo style sauce, an oily mixture that should be stirred up to fully enjoy. The blue cheese sauce on the side isn't just plain blue cheese dressing, but has a Greek twist, with dill added as with their tzatziki. It's chunky and it appears to have sat for a while to better enable the dill to infuse. Gyro is nicely-packed full of goodness. I ordinarily can't stand the taste of lamb, but somehow Sandy's magically marinates the lamb, grinds it with beef, and seasons it so that there is no gaminess, only delicious flavor in flat sort of meatloaf-style slices. If you really enjoy that gamey lamb taste, this might not be the greatest for you, but if you're like me you'll love it. Take out may take a while; on a slow Saturday morning with just a few locals dining in, a gyro lunch and 30 wings took around 20-30 minutes to prepare. Worth it, however! read more

So I was apprehensive when Sandy apparently retired and his daughter took over. Thanks to the Covid B**, I hadn't been to Sandy's since maybe February. ANYWAY, I was pleasantly surprised when I went in today to get a Greek salad to go. The ladies seemed more cheerful than when Sandy was hanging around, and they were very attentive. My only negative was, a Greek salad, ONLY TWO OLIVES ????? REALLY ? (my complaint for several years actually) Otherwise the salad was great, plenty of lettuce, tomatoes, nice Feta cheese, and the stuffed grape leafs are always great. read more

I am about 8 months pregnant but I came here all the way back in my first trimester on a craving for some fries and maybe greek food. Let me just say: the prices, quantity, and quality of the food were all fabulous. I had my fries with mayo and ketchup mixed and I was soooo satisfied and happy I almost cried. We had the gyro platter and it was amazing. The salad was fresh and great. I was feeling so nauseous back then and I really was able to keep it all down. The gyro meat was so tender and delicious and I loved how the saltiness to it matched the pita. The pitas were exquisite. I hadn't seen a Greek area here in Gainesville before other than Tzakikis but this little hole in the wall HITS THE SPOT!! You could drive right by it and would've never thought much of it. Just an update... I haven't really been to too many restaurants since Covid. But Sandy's Place is so close by to where we live. Sandy's Place is an American-Greek restaurant in NW Gainesville off 34th St. As others have stated, it's tucked away in an older shopping plaza. Next door is Five Star Pizza. At the front of the plaza is El Indio Mexican place. Sandy's is an older restaurant. But they have quite a variety of food and it's always served fresh. Come with a big appetite because large portions are served. I personally like the grape leaves as an appetizer and try to rotate my entree orders. In addition to the grape leaves, I recommend the gyro, any of the sandwiches (I personally like the French dip), and chicken souvlaki Greek platter. They also make delicious mashed potatoes and gravy. My family and I have eaten at Sandy's Place for many years now and every single time, we've always had the absolute best service ever. I don't know about now because of Covid, but Sandy's used to get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. I'm glad they survived the pandemic! read more

Although I found my meal to be good, when we got to the restaurant at 5:30 trying to beat the crowd, there were only five people there. It was my wife, her 93 year old dad and myself and we seated ourselves. Our waitress took our drink orders, and when she came back with the drinks we placed our food order. As they started to get more people in, and drinks were brought to their tables, I asked the young lady waiting tables since it had been a little more than a half an hour if she could maybe check on the timeframe for our order. She snapped back with a nasty attitude, "I am the only waitress here, I only have two cooks and do you see anybody else getting their food"? I just stated that I was just inquiring was all, and she huffed away. The table next to ours must eat there often because the guy called the regular waitress and told her what had happened and she showed up to a round of whistles and applause. When our food came out of the kitchen the young lady motioned for the regular waitress to come over for a quick chat, and pointed at our table. The regular waitress was very cordial and accommodating, but I think that this will be the last time there for us after finding out my nephew and his girlfriend have been served undercooked chicken there the last two times eating there. Not living on this side of town Sandy's was always an after thought for lunch or dinner. We were planning on doing a roadtrip to Tarpon Springs. But with price of gas and just having lots of other things to do I suggested trying Sandy's. I've read reviews online about Sandy's having greek food. Here's our experience. Went to lunch on Saturday arriving around 2pm for a late lunch. The place was fairly empty. Walked in the door, sign says seat yourself. We walked up to the booth section, noticing almost every booth seat was old and had huge rips in the seats repaired with blue duct tape. We picked the booth with the best seats we could spot. Our waitress was attentive at first. But a pet peeve I have is when the server does not come by and check how things are going and fill our waters. My water sat empty long enough that it forced me to get up and grab the pitcher of water on the counter. Our waitress was just sitting down at the end looking back every so often. We perused the menu, selecting to order and appetizer, and two entrees. I asked our server if the grape leaves were homemade. She said no, that's about the only item that's not made in house. So we ordered the greek combo appetizer plate. Grape leaves, feta cheese, olives and tomatoes. It was just ok, nothing you couldn't make better at home with stuff from publix. My gyro came out. I had asked the waitress for extra Tzatziki sauce which was not on it. It was just ok. I'd give it a 5 on a 10 scale. The price was $8 for a gyro and fries. Sandy's has been in that strip mall forever. I'm sure they have their regulars. But it really is a run down hole. The only reason I'm not giving them 1 star is their prices are good for the quantity and quality of food they are serving. Again it's not great greek, just average. Ask and you shall receive... I love French fries... however only super crispy and fresh fries. I always order them specifically requesting them to be "crispy" but that is not always what I get. Most restaurants just can't get it right no matter how hard they try. However, at Sandy's I requested extra crispy fries with my gyro and I got some absolutely delicious, perfectly golden, crispy deliciousness. The gyro was quite good as well with 3 thick slices of lamb/beef. I docked one star for lack of wifi, glass ketchup bottle and lack of ambiance. Wifi is not usually too important but inside the restaurant I have no service so wifi is critical. I think my love to fries is directly related to my love for ketchup, I hate glass bottles, easily accessible ketchup via a squeeze bottle is imperative to me. I don't like to fight for my food or worry about accidentally throwing a bottle across the room in a frenzied attempt to stave my ketchup craving. Not to mention the bottle itself was coated in ketchup getting my hands all sticky. :/ The restaurant itself leaves much to be desired, resembling more of an 1980's bar. Not exactly fine dining or a place to bring clients or discerning in-laws. If I'm in the area alone again I'd definitely return or get take out! read more

Trying to support small business. First 32 fir two for lunch is what I considered high. They have items on the menu that they don't carry and I guess they don't have a sharpie to Mark it is. Actually the place is better then I expected. The food was all I called the fresh-cut and cooked properly. I think the place is been around for over 20 years. The place could use a big update in atmosphere and there is on tape stuck on a booths that are torn. The repair and maintenance of the place has been poor. Except for that and the lack of excellent service the food is fairly good and much better than the Pita pit. Okay but the Pita pit or PD keen doesn't have service anyway so I guess that makes it better. If you're looking for a great Greek salad or gyeo try Sandy's place on 34th it's definitely worth the money and has a lot of food for what you get. Nothing spectacular big see him expectations given the fact that when I walked and it was role totally discombobulated. Today is Valentine's Day. I ordered a salmon on a bed of rice with veggies. I will say the portion size if good but the food had no seasoning. The veggies seemed like they were bought in a bag and not steamed all the way. They were still crunchy. The bread that came with it was over baked and hard as a rock. There was no seasoning on any of the food not even the salmon. And I got a soup and they gave me a salad instead. I'm giving it 2 starts only because my boyfriend said the fries he got were good. 10/10 don't recommend Eapecally not on valentines. read more

This was my first time eating food from this establishment and can sadly say it will be my last. I ordered the Greek salad for myself and it was plain. Did not look like a Greek salad. Only 4 olives and iceberg lettuce, lots of it. Two large onion rings sat on top as well. Very disappointed! I also ordered for friend the gyro. The meat should be sliced as a traditional gyro should be, but instead there were thick hunks of meat. It resembled Spam canned mea. I have been coming here on and off for a while, and the experience has always been luke-warm. Their burgers are fair, and I enjoy them. They also have wings that are decent, so that is a nice go-to. I have tried their gyros, but frankly they just aren't up to par. The owner is Greek, while the rest of his family is apparently Italian, but his knowledge of a good gyro is apparently broken. If you want a good gyro, head over to University Ave and hit up Gyros Plus... those guys know a good gyro. Their fries, however, are excellent. They have a nice taste, and they hold up over time, not going soggy nor hard as a rock. Condiments are a bit tough to find sometimes, however. read more

This place definitely screams dive bar/ hole in the wall and I LOVE it. I've been eating here for decades and they have the best bad for you food you can get. Their chicken souvlaki is the stuff dreams are made out of. There is not a Greek restaurant in Gainesville that does it better. Seriously. This place is the best. I admit, when I eat here I can't waiver from my tried and true chicken souvlaki wrapped in a warm pita that's so delicious I could eat ten of them, but my brother loves their giant burgers here and they do look delicious. On days I've felt like clogging my arteries or trying to stop my heart, I've had different appetizers and all of them are delicious. This place has serious diner food and it's serious delicious.
