Hidden in a bland grey plaza that time forgot is a rare Gainesville jewel. Inside is equally bland and dark when you first sit down you might be a little worried. It's definitely an older greasy spoon. Sandy's Place is located next to an 80s style salon that is probably still perming women's hair! The walls are beige and devoid of any flair or framed art. Sparse can be soothing. The booth seats certainly show their years. Torn in many places. The beverage bar area has no lighting at all and I think this contributed to my initial unsettled feeling. I ordered the pastichio platter. If you are tired of eating the same few types of food over and over or feel you might be unknowingly experiencing your own Groundhog Day. Then this is what you order. It's everything your tastebuds wanted but hadn't tried yet. It's baked macaroni layered over cinnamon and nutmeg spiced ground beef, and layered again over rigatelli noodles in a homemade sauce. This small restaurant in a older shopping center off of 34 Street. My husband and I eat here weekly due to the closest to our home. We always have wonderful food and fantastic service. The owner, Felicia, is always there and will make things right. My husband loves the gyro platter, which has large portions. Monday night is chicken and rice soup, which is delicious and my personal favorite. I love their Greek dressing as well on any salad. They usually have daily lunch and dinner specials. I have been a loyal customer of Sandy's, mainly because the soups are good and the servers are personable - they remember you, and help you to feel like a local. Oh and they are 3 minutes from where I work. This past week, however, has caused me to re-think my position and I think I will be driving a little farther for my go-to place in the new year. What happened was that an employee made a mistake in checking out the person next to me. The owner (Sandy) tore strips off her, including using the word "stupid," something he regularly does in relation to his employees (and sometimes his customers). It is, I believe, considered "part of his charm." This time, the owner practically pushed the employee away, and she went on with her work. However, the customer who was being served protested loudly, telling him that she had two friends who had already stopped going here because of how he treated his help. The owner turned on her, and a yelling match broke out, ending with the customer saying she also would not be returning. "Get the [expletive] out of my place!" yelled the owner several times as she was departing. I confess that I kept my head down, paid my bill, and left. I am not proud of my silence, but in retrospect I have decided I don't want to support this kind of nastiness, or to welcome it into my life. I will miss the soup. read more

We have been going here for years and have never had a bad meal. There are a couple servers in there that are our favorite, the owner is absolutely amazing! Now that I am separated, I still go there with my son, and we have an amazing time! Even with the change of menu things are absolutely delicious and the specials are a must! I'm a huge soup person and I'm from Miami. I can never find a Manhattan clam chowder and they have it here weekly! And they do it well :-) chicken noodle soup, chicken and rice soup, you name it! I don't do dairy or me so I haven't tried the others, but I've heard they are equally amazing! Try the Greek platter as it won't disappoint even for a 6 year old son who has been requesting it for years! Taziki sauce I can slather it on my body if necessary, salmon, Chicken souvlaki, etc! The gyro plate is just fantastic. The flavor of the gyro is strong. Sandy is actually Greek, so it is authentic food he serves here. The grape leaves are fantastic. Sandy's is the type of place that, once you find, you keep going back to. There are staple Greek items on the menu (Gyros, Souvlaki, etc..) as well as sandwiches and some "Dinner" items (Pork chops, Meatloaf, etc..). My go to item is the Pork Souvlaki since they are the only game in town as far as that goes. Sometimes it's great (juicy, perfectly charred) but sometimes...not so much (dry, tough, burnt). Thankfully the latter is the exception not the rule. I don't know if the tzatziki is homemade or brought in but I like that it's a bit understated (doesn't slam you in the face with garlic). yep, it looks sketchy as hell from the outside. It's in a run down little strip mall between a salon and a dry cleaner's, next to Family Dollar. Parking kinda sucks. BUT look past all that and go inside. You will not be disappointed. The food is really fresh, simple and the prices are modest. There actually is a Sandy, which I find endearing. He is Greek, and his Gyros and other assortment of Greek offerings are the real deal. But, if you're not a fan of Greek food there are so many other options! The French Dip sandwich is my go-to, but they make a really decent burger. Their wings were a wonderful discovery-crispy skin, tender meat and a spicy, flavorful sauce. I order mine "naked", with the sauce on the side, so I can dip. Heavenly! It's a great spot for a weeknight dinner (I've never been on weekends, but I see that they have live music) Their specials change all the time, and if I remember correctly, they make their soups of the day in-house. The waitresses are the best, too. They're friendly, welcoming and give you an old-school "whaddya want, honey?" as a greeting. Love it! It will look like a hole in the wall, but come for the very good Greek food. Decor will not impress, but try the food and your mind will be blown. The menu has Greek items and traditional American food at good prices. Daily specials are worth reviewing. I got the Greek Special (Greek salad, gyro meat, and pita wedges) and my wife got the pork souvlaki wrap with fries. Both were really good, and we will be back. I've eaten here several times; as others have mentioned you get you pick of Greek, burger/sandwiches, or "American dinner" type plates. I've enjoyed everything I've had here; last night it was the Greek sampler, which came with a small salad, pastitsio, spanikopita, and a few olives. Oh, and bread. My dinner guest had the pork chop special (2, grilled) with soup, salad, corn, and mashed potatoes. I think she got the better value, but portions were fine on each, and the food was well prepared and presented. Sandy's isn't a fancy place -- a row of booths on one side, u-shaped bar in the middle, and tables on teh other side. Several televisions, usually tuned to some sports event. The waitress was friendly, and kept my drink filled. I don't stop by every time I'm in town, but I don't have any problem recommending Sandy's, either. 3.5 stars. read more

Bangin tuna sandwich! Located In a strip mall on 34th street by YMCA. The tuna sandwich has celery in it too which I like. This place is pretty popular for the area, especially for lunch. The grilled cheese and fries too... grilled cheese is hard to mess up. The hamburger is okay. The Italian sub I've heard is really good. The meatballs are really good. I wouldn't necessarily recommend eating in the restaurant unless you are wanting to eat at a bar like place. But the food is decent enough. There really aren't any other Greek options here in Gainesville to my knowledge, so I would go back on occasion but would do take out. Service isn't great. That is part of what brought it down to 3 stars. The gyro was a 3.5 as it was a little oily although my husband said his was not. Good price though because the sandwich is big. When we complained on the way out to the woman we later learned is the owner, she said they have a lot of takeout orders. We said no one came in for takeout while we were there. Possibly the best gyros in the city. Delightfully fluffy pita, well seasoned meat and awesome fries, and overall a pretty good value cost-wise. I also love the saganaki (because who doesn't love fried cheese). Most of the rest of the menu is pretty standard fare, but I've never had anything bad from here. The decor inside is dated and nothing special, so I normally get takeout, but they usually have decent service when I've stopped to dine in. The baklava is pretty generic and tastes like it probably came from Sam's; I would skip it. Otherwise I give the gyros two thumbs up. read more

I just had the worst dinner of my life from Sandy's Place. Pork roast mashed potatoes gravy, salad, and chicken and rice soup. It was take out. The soup tasted like dirty dish water, I only had one spoon then through it out immediately. The pork roast was tough and chewy, took one bite only. I know the green beans were from a can but then boiled for a long time which made them super soggy, I spit it outThe salad was ice berg (a little brown) and off red tomatoes. This is a great place to relax with friends in the NW edge of Gainesville, close to El Indio. Love this area. I highly recommend the naked chicken wings, gyro sandwich and the spaghetti. My best friend who introduced me to this place says the meat loaf is some of the best she has had. I have yet to try it but eventually I will even though the idea of a meat loaf is not that appealing to me. I hope that doesn't make me sound shi shi foo foo. Anyway, check them out. read more

I love Sandy's place. It's an awesome Greek-American diner experience that otherwise would not exist in Gainesville. The food is pretty great as well with a nice selection of Greek-ish and American food. Beer prices are on point and the fries are perfect. Casual place. The bar is the dominant feature in the room. The food is pretty good though it always strikes me as odd that the Greek food comes with fries. Service is friendly but forgetful ... as in "I already took your order, didn't I?" or "Didn't I already give you your check?". It's still worth the trip. read more

I've been to Sandy's Place lots of times because they have THE best wings in ALL THE LAND! I'm not really one for writing reviews, but today I felt like I should. I got to Sandy's around 2:30 pm so it wasn't their busiest time of day...as soon as I walked in, I realized I had forgotten my phone and was expecting a call so I walked back out to turn on the car to make sure my phone was charging...but it didn't turn on..it just clicked..no lights..no motor...no anything. I have AAA but feel pretty certain I have used up all of my benefits for the year. I walked back inside, unsure of what to do, it was getting ready to storm and I was stranded on my lunch hour. Sandy saw me and asked me what was wrong. He is often mistaken by people as being gruff. He is a TEDDY BEAR! He came outside and had me pop the hood...he wiggled something and my car started right up. Talk about amazing customer service. As always, the wings were spot on...just perfect...but Sandy coming to my rescue today just made my whole day better. I will forever be a patron of this awesome neighborhood place and a fan of Sandy. read more

Our waitress, Felicia, was awesome! She totally runs the place. She sent back a plate from the kitchen and told the cook, "I'm not serving a burnt bun, especially not to new customers!" I love her. I had a gyro platter w/ greek salad. Bae got a chili cheeseburger and fries. Everything was very very good. After tip, the bill came out to just under $30 which is not bad at all. Food is okay. The customer service is terrible. I've been here multiple times and think customer service is definitely not their strong suite. I stood by the 'wait to be seated' sign for a while before anyone came to seat me so, I decided to just grab an open table. Food seemed to take forever. That's not an issue. Once I got my meal, the server never came back to as how was my lunch or if I needed anything. Maybe she was in a bad mood. I go to pay and stood there while the owner finished whatever he was doing on his phone. My favorite dish--the spinach pie--is made with frozen spinach, and I know that it could be better, thus 3 stars. For the most part, Sandy does not cut corners. He knows the secret to restaurant food; i. e., lots of salt, lots of fat. And the menu up and down is good, but Sandy should take a dollar off every dish. They don't mess up your food often, but you should wish they would mess it up because the restitution they give back is outstanding. The service is good, but the beer choice is lacking. I have complaint about Sandy's I was in there yesterday with a co-worker. I ordered a grilled cheese, a cup of chili and a water. That meal cost me $10.00 that is not including tip there grilled cheese normally comes with fries I am not a fan of there fries so I asked if I could just get the sandwich no fries, the waitress said sure, but said nothing about that I would still have to pay the regular price. I don't see why I didn't just get charged a up charge. For what I paid for that meal I could go to Piesanos or Red Onion and get a meal way better then what you get at Sandy's and paid just as much or less for my meal. I basically go to Sandy's if I am short on time for lunch. I don't think I will be giving them my business for while. The waitress are great. And the food is okay and I much rather eat at Sandy's then some fast food place!!!! read more

Nice variety of items on their menu to choose from. I enjoy trying something new each time I go. So far there hasn't been anything I haven't enjoyed at Sandy's. I also enjoy it's convenient location, easy access, & large parking area. read more

I think they have the best meatball sandwich and spaghetti and meatballs in Gainesville. I prefer a smooth style sauce, and they have a good one. The meatballs and nice and flavorful, you get a nice bite from the cheese in them. read more
