This taste so good, only downfall is wish it was more meat. The lady at the front counter looks like she didn't want to work today.

I was really craving African food and found out about Sankofa Kitchen. Sankofa Kitchen feels like the definition of a local hole in the wall spot. The location is a bit off the beaten path and the signage looks a bit outdated, however, don't let this discourage you! They have a small parking area around the building and the inside is adorned with some beautiful African Masks, wooden accents and a bar. It is quite small and not very modern but this would be a nice space to eat in if you were craving or wanting to try African food for the first time. They have an extensive menu with some solid options including Egusi, Jollof rice, various soups and stews. The service worker there was very kind and greeted me with a smile. She was so willing to help me decide what I should try since it was my first time there and offered to walk me through the menu. I ordered take out as I was just seeking some food to enjoy for dinner on my way home and it was prepared rather quickly. The food was packaged very well and I didn't have to worry about any thing leaking while I drove. The food is a bit on the pricier side, however the portion sizes were enough for at least 2 people. I ordered the Egusi (this is a stew made with ground melon seeds and leafy greens) with Beef and Fufu (a pounded starch), I also ordered a side of fried sweet plantains. The Egusi was delicious and had great flavor. I'd best describe the flavor as slightly spicy with an earthy undertone. The texture of the beef added was inconsistent with some pieces being very tender and others being tough. They also offer Vegetarian Egusi which would not have this problem. The fried plantains were also delicious but a tad bit on the oily side. This was nothing that a pat with a paper towel couldn't fix though and didn't detract from my enjoyment of them. The fufu was not my favorite, I did not realize that it was plantain fufu and it had a slight bitter taste. This was my first time having plantain fufu so I am unsure if that is normal but I did notice that they have pounded yam which is the kind of fufu I am used to. I'd recommend if you're looking to try fufu for the first time that you go for that one instead as it may be more palatable for those who have never tried it before. Overall, Sankofa Kitchen is a nice spot if you want to experience a new cuisine for the first time or have experience with African food and have a craving.

I was so excited to finally try it. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. When my husband got home with the food, we realized one of the dinners was missing. When he called the restaurant, they went back and forth with him, insisting he had the item and confusing it with a veggie tray. It was very frustrating and unprofessional. I drove all the way back from my home in Chesapeake to resolve the issue. While there, I also returned the glory greens because they were clearly not fresh or properly prepared. I asked to swap them for cabbage, but the cabbage wasn't fully cooked. After waiting an additional 10 minutes, they asked if I would prefer a refund instead. I then had to wait another five minutes just to receive the refund. Throughout the entire interaction, the staff was rude and showed no empathy for the inconvenience -- especially considering I had to drive all the way back after my husband had already brought dinner home. Overall, this was a horrible experience, and sadly, the food was even worse. I truly wanted to love this place, but I will not be returning

We honestly have no idea what everything else on the menu is like, because we always get the half chicken with beans, rice and pico, and the delicious jalapeño corn muffins. The chicken is always super tender; the sauce they cover it with is so delicious; the skin is always the perfect amount of cooked and packed with flavor. They have a very spicy sauce that my partner loves, and I always get the orange sauce. There are others! The drink selection is quite good, with a ton of variety. They even had the seriously-rare grapefruit Jarritos the last time I was there. It's my favorite, but for some reason nobody ever has it! Thank you all for such good food and your kindness over the years!

So I'm assuming this place is under new management or at least decided to care about Yelp reviews, given that they have been verified for only a week. I was contacted by the management to take my photos down of the horchata that was allowed to sit long enough for the mix to settle, with an absorbent amount settled at the bottom, stating that "natives are aware of this," so I should basically not be accepting of this possibility. As if I don't understand and assumed because I'm not a "native" that I never made horchata. Let it be understood: I have visited many Mexican, Tex-Mex restaurants, let alone the fact that I love this sweet treat that I made myself, so I'm WELL aware of the possibilities of the mix settling. First off, it should have been some notification that the drink had been sitting for so long that it would need to be churned again... or... maybe you could have just made me a fresh drink rather than provide one that sat long enough that at least a half inch in height of horchata mix settled at the bottom of my beverage that I couldnt even drink through the straw. No one should ever contact someone who made a review over four years ago. Asking for them to delete photos based on their understanding of how a beverage should be presented or served (given that I'm not a native). I feel that was very unprofessional. Especially since they just verified this page enough to care about any of the bad reviews posted in the past, many of them have been removed since they're at five stars now, since they've been verified in the past week. Might I add that? They contacted me the same day that they verified their page. I have the screenshot to prove it. But I won't add it because I don't want them to try to take that down either.

I'm not sure if…read moreone of the owners is a cook or it's a family owned business, but one thing I've learned family is not gonna take your business as serious as you would. The last time I went there, I ordered the goat stew, almost 40 minutes before I arrive. Once I got there, they said oh we're out of goat, they asked if I wanted beef, no one called me no one communicated. I was very shocked that they had someone that supposedly is supposed to be at the front at the register. A Caucasian lady, but the whole time I was there she was in the back, talking, laughing joking. When she told me they had no goat and if I wanted beef, I said sure, but why no one never called me, no one never communicated to me that you guys were out of goat and she just stood there and looked at me crazy she didn't say oh my gosh I'm so sorry you know I'll see if I can talk to my manager to see what we can do for the inconvenience. I didn't drive, I was in a Uber. So with Uber you only have a time limit at each stop, but thankfully the Uber driver was so nice and pleasant and I explained the situation and they didn't leave me. And I had autistic individual with me as well, so that could've been very bad. I know she just looked at me crazy because she was supposed to call and reach out and let me know something. So the whole time I'm there. I'm waiting for her to you know come talk to me or something. She's in the back just laughing and joking and you know just back there not upfront. As people were coming in, she'll come poke her head out and then go back in the back. I'm like what are you here for you not to cook so. I've been to Yendidi so many times, every time I've went there's always somebody at the front whether it's a guy or a woman. I've never seen a person that's supposed to be in the front, in the kitchen the whole time as if they're cooking. When I got my food. the beef was actually goo, they only gave me three pieces of beef two medium size pieces and a small piece which I was upset about. They could've gave me like more especially I be had I had to wait. Nobody called me or anything. The pounded yam, which I was so shocked that you have to pay for separately now it's not something that you can request as a side with your meal like how you used to be able to, on DoorDash that's how it is. The pounded yam was very soggy. My only issue with this location, is they just don't seem like they really care to put effortin, Idk if they lost their spark or care to deliver great food. I think that they give mediocre because they're not really interested in sharing their culture with Americans, it feels like they give us very poor quality food because they know half of us don't know the difference. But that's a bad look because individuals who are from their culture that come and look for authentic food come and eat. I've seen reviews were they review saying how they're not making authentic food, and selling old food. So it's very unfortunate. The places that I used to get very good African food from are no longer open, which is unfortunate. Covid took them out of business or they relocated to another state, and they were really really good and consistent very pleasant. So Yen need to work on, customer service. They need to work on quality, because all it takes is for someone to open up a restaurant, serve the same food. & They really have a heart and love for cooking and seeing people enjoy wonderful food with pleasant customer service and very consistent food Quality, only takes for one business like that, to come to close a lot of places down.

Food was delicious. Service was prompt and waitress was kind and attentive. I will definitely be…read morereturning.
