Did this spot change ownership? I just swung by because this used to be my healthy to go spot for lunch. I got my usual chicken bowl with sumi salad. The cabbage was bitter, barely any dressing and the chicken was fat and rubbery in parts. What happened?? So disappointing. Another institution gone because of high food costs. I had a really nice experience and SanSai Grill and was happy to see that the restaurant was very busy. The manager was amazing. I think I watched her run a marathon getting orders ready and handling the front of house. Even though there seemed to be a deluge of orders, both on line and in house, she was super accommodating, friendly and professional. The food was very, very good. I got the chicken plate and my wife got the grilled salmon salad. We also had the spring rolls as an appetizer. All were excellent. I'll definitely be back to try other options. Sansai (山菜) is Japanese meaning "mountain vegetables", originally referring to vegetables that grew naturally, were foraged in the wild, and not grown and harvested from fields. They don't serve mountain vegetables here, but do have lots of salads. This is also one of my aunt's favorite places to eat. She loves the California rolls with chicken and salad. Great Japanese inspired food and Hawaiian food. They give large portion. Every upgrade to large combo seems worth it. Salmon grill was very good. Dumpling soup was quite Americanized but it's still delicious. Sushi comes in a really large bite! I somehow got the idea from the Japanese words written in the restaurant that this would be pretty authentic. They seem pleasant when taking your order and will provide any additional condiments as requested. However, the male manager/owner needs a couple of lessons in customer service. On multiple occasions when visiting as I approached the counter, he decided to take a phone order. That's not a huge issue but he doesn't greet me nor ask me to wait. Shouldn't the customer standing physically in front of you receive service before a person calling in? Secondly, after he is done with his call, he proceeds to correct his employee on how to correctly assemble the sushi or converse with the cook staff...all while I'm still standing there waiting to place my order. After the third time of this occurring, I decided to leave and take my money elsewhere. My wife turned me on to this place. I gave it a good 3 stars and not a bad 3 stars. I had the spicy chicken w/ white rice and salad the first time I tried it. It was definitely vibing descent. I asked the lady if it was always this spicy at this location because at all the other locations I've been to it wasn't nearly that hot. She said a lot of people say it's too spicy but some like it, I would say that if you get so many comments about it being too spicy then you should probably lower the spice level. My wife walked in the restroom and back out. The smell could knock out a skunk. My wife went to chipotle instead for restroom. I tell the manger at the time- Hispanic dude with glasses, that my wife wasn't able to use the restroom. He goes to check out the restroom to come back and say, yeah we will get to the restroom ASAP". Knowingly, he knew the restroom needed more than a little attention. As the food is ready to be served to our table, Both workers are commenting, they think they are at home". Keep in mind we are the only two inside the restaurant at the time. I kindly walked to the counter and simply asked for my full refund. I went for lunch food was good and a different staffing crew. Food is tasty for what it is. The lunch style is best for your buck. The space itself is reasonably large and clean (especially compared to the cramped outlet in El Segundo). The price was a touch on the high side at $12, and I think that you can do a bit better for value at one of the poke places around. If you're here and dying for some fast Japanese food, then it'll do but it's not really worth seeking out. The Sansai by my house in Westchester closed down. But this franchise is right on Rosecrans just off the 405 freeway in the Ocean gate shopping center. So it is very convenient for me to pass by and pick up lunch or dinner. The owner is a really nice man. The employees seem to work hard and try to get your order correct. I have never had a problem with the food. If you are in the neighborhood definitely stop by for some sushi. They also offer salads, soup, teriyaki, tempura.
