I went to this restaurant with low expectations. On Yelp, there are a lot of photos of sushi rolls. Call me snobby, but I've never had great sushi at a place that serves a variety of rolls. This place reminded me that I've got to always keep an open mind. For the record, I didn't try any of their rolls. I'm not that open minded. I had their shrimp tempura and an assortment of nigiri sushi. The shrimp tempura was crispy and hot, just the way I like it. The salmon, snow crab, and blue fin tuna sushi were home runs. The only things I didn't enjoy were the egg sushi and miso soup (too watery). Not going to ding them for the soup, however, since they gave that to me for free. The service here was outstanding. The staff were very nice and the food came out quickly. Not sure if this was because my wife and I were the only ones in the restaurant at the time, but they gave us grilled fish for free in addition to the miso soup. My only gripe is that the server called attention to the specials for the day which included toro. When I asked for the toro, she informed me that they didn't have any that day. If you're planning to come here to eat sushi, which I recommend you do, request that they not put any wasabi in the sushi. They give you a generous amount on the side. The chef asked me if I wanted a lot or little wasabi in my sushi and I asked for a lot. That was my mistake. The wasabi hit me like a ton of bricks. Didn't take away from the tastiness though.

Great place for sushi. The sushi is fresh and price decently. The service is great. I've gone twice which happened to be on Valentine's Day. I couldn't have picked a better spot. The vibes were it! Everyone was taking sake shots. Definitely made me love the place even more. I got the omasake sushi. Sooo good and the presentation is so cutesy. Both times I've been I didn't have to wait and was seated right away. It's a cute little spot. Child friendly with high chairs. This spot is located in a shopping center with a lot of parking. Will definitely keep returning.

I came to Sushi Yoko on Rosecrans Ave, and wow--this place is nice. The ambiance hits just right: dark inside, AC cranked up, and you completely forget what the parking lot even looks like. It's friendly, it's fun, and the staff makes you feel comfortable from the jump. The food? Let's just say I almost forgot to take pictures because I dove right in. I ordered the 3-piece bento box, chicken teriyaki bowl, Thai coconut shrimp roll, and volcano roll. Those rolls? Packed with sexy flavor, just like my wife. The chicken katsu was fresh and crunchy, the chicken teriyaki was flavorful and cooked perfectly. The salmon? Oh, it was beautiful, moist, pink, and exactly how I like it. Nothing better than a hot pink center you can get your mouth on. The Thai coconut roll was unique and loaded with texture, sweet, creamy, a little crisp. The volcano roll brought the heat, spicy, savory, and seriously had a fat boy begging for more. The prices are absolutely worth it, and honestly, this is the best spot to eat in the plaza. Next time I'm in town, I'm heading straight here, no hesitation.

I went here with my mom last week. She said this was her favorite sushi restaurant. We were the only ones there. The waiter was super attentive and kind. Quick with water refills. The sushi was very fresh. The chef was also very kind and greeted us. I will definitely go back soon! Inside was nice and I enjoyed that even though we went for lunch it wasn't super bright. It created a nice relaxing ambiance.

Our flight was canceled and we got meal vouchers from United. Min was so nice and understanding while he served us, food was out promptly and everything was so good. We got the awesome roll which was my favorite roll . I also got the BSCR roll which was really good. My husband got the hot night, awesome and volcano. He said hands down, we're making this our sushi spot now. Our kids got the shoyu ramen and they devoured it within minutes. The place is located in a shopping center and may be easy to miss but you definitely don't want to miss out on all the rolls this place is serving up!

This is my 2nd time visiting this spot. I wanted to give this spot another opportunity. It did not failed. Service and the authentic roll was perfect. The crab was delicious. I just wish it was a bit larger. Haha. The Black Dragon Roll was delicious too. I love rolls. (I had sushi last night at another spot). I wanted to try something different today. The chef is awesome! I suggest seating at the bar. Make the ambiance much greater. I love it!

9/1/24 This was our First visit today. We got the ex-boyfriend roll, the amazing roll, the crunchy shrimp tempura roll, and one large Sapporo to share. We loved all the food! The ex-boyfriend's roll without rice and using rice paper is pretty and delicious, but it's hard to eat because it's easy to fall apart. Very good first impression and we will be coming back!

I was craving sushi before the clippers game nearby and feel so lucky that I found this spot! I came on a Tuesday night around 5pm and only about 2 other tables were seated. The waiter gave us complimentary miso soup while we waited for the sushi to come out which was so nice! The meal was a 10/10 and we will definitely be coming back ‍

We ordered 1 for each of us the omakase nigiri combo, which is 14 pcs of sushi, steamed egg, and miso soup. For the price, I would definitely say that it was worth it with everything that you get and the quality of the sushi they give you. The fish were all really good quality and really well made. The miso soup and steamed egg were both good bonuses that came with it. Service/Ambiance On a friday evening dinner, place wasn't too packed and you had an option for either bar seating in front of the chefs or just a regular table. We had opted for a regular table, but next time we'd definitely go for the bar seating as they make it in front of you and serve it to you one by one rather than serving all the choices in one plate. The staff were all really nice and we didn't have to wait long for our sushi. Loved the overall vibe of the place, it was as if I was transported to japan and definitely loved all the dodgers merch on display

What is amazing is that each visit seems to be better than last, I don't know how chef Daniel does it. I love chef Daniel and his team. Currently, his sister Annie is working the service, and she is so friendly and nice. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. I started frequenting omakase back when it was cool for the chefs to be "sushi Nazi", unfriendly and aloof, and chef Daniel is the extreme opposite. As for the food... amazing! The courses are similar, starting with appetizers, then nigiri items, and ending with dessert. Some of my favorite items are the mackerel sando (mackerel in home made bread, delish), Jeju abalone with sauce made from its innards, yaki-tamago dessert, beautiful Meiji tofu with dashi broth, I could go on and on. I've had many abalone in my lifetime, but the abalone here is the best I've ever had. He usually has seasonal fish that is limited in availability, and it's such a treat to be able to experience such variety of items. Chef Daniel is also very informative about every course and I learn something new every time, so it makes the dining experience even more special. I highly recommend Sushi Sonagi, Free parking in the lot and reservation is through Tock. Enjoy!

KenScale: 8.5/10 Visit: December 2025…read more Before we headed off to Los Angeles, my wife Jun and I debated where to take out our longtime friend and her husband the night before our trip together to the Santa Barbara wine country. We knew her friend loves sushi but it also happened that we had visited Sushi Sho in New York in the fall that we were afraid we might be too spoiled to enjoy another sushi restaurant. At the end, we decided to focus on treating our friend and booked a reservation to Sushi Sonagi, located inside a strip mall in Gardena outside LA. At the end of the night, Jun and I were surprised just how much we loved our experience at this sushi restaurant. The chef Daniel Son, a second-generation chef, is in charge of all of the dishes at Sushi Sonagi, which has a single counter table with two shifts per night. What really stood out about the omakase at Sushi Sonagi (the menu costs $250 per person) is chef Daniel's openness to experimenting with ingredients not typically used at a sushi restaurant, as well as the overall balance in flavor of all the dishes. The opening dishes featured a super delicious chawanmushi with snow crab and (unexpectedly) sweet corn. The fried green eyes fish was also another delightful item on the course, as well the mackerel sandwich that Jun really enjoyed even though mackerel is not her favorite fish. My two favorite dishes before the nigiri section were the black abalone (sourced from Korea's Jeju Island) with liver sauce - this is one delicacy that I won't stop thinking about for a while - and monkfish liver (which had a bit of wasabi on top to a surprising effect) that would've held its own against ankimo at other top-end sushi restaurants. The nigiris coming from chef Daniel's magical touch were also of consistently high quality; Jun and I were especially impressed with how each piece wasn't overly seasoned to maximize the texture of the fish. Some of the standout pieces wowed us with ingredients we had not encountered before, like the baby green onions that complemented beautifully with spotted skipjack tuna, or the seared flounder fin that was exceptional for its textural complexity. I certainly don't recall having many langoustine nigiri at sushi restaurants before, and after chef Daniel brought one (from New Zealand) with wonderfully crunchy texture, I wondered why other sushi restaurants don't try this ingredient more often. After a few more nigiri pieces and an aromatic soup of tofu, yuzu and chrysanthemum came the highlight of our dinner, a stone pot rice with female snow crab inside. The rice umami of this rice dish was so irresistible that even though I was pretty full by then, I felt compelled to ask for a second bowl. Even the tamago from Sushi Sonagi is not an ordinary egg custard, with miso butter that added an entirely different dimension to the dish. Getting a reservation at Sushi Sonagi, given its popularity in the LA dining scene and also limited seatings (the restaurant is only open Thursday through Saturday), will definitely require advance planning (plus $200 deposit per person, which will be fully refunded on the reservation day). Given that the reservation window opens 30 days prior at midnight Pacific Time, I was afraid I might miss the window but if you are able to wake up early Eastern Time the next day, most likely you will be able to snag a table. The modest and cozy setting of the counter gives a warm neighborhood restaurant vibe that belies the very high quality of dishes coming out of chef Daniel's hands. The restaurant does have a decent number of sakes and some limited wines on the beverage list; it also allows corkage for a fairly modest price of $45 / wine bottle so I brought a couple of champagnes from a wine shop in LA (I highly recommend Thatcher's Wine in Brentwood) to take advantage of the policy. At the end of the meal, we chatted for a bit with chef Daniel, who is a truly nice person that simply enjoys what he does and is eager to continue to improve upon his craft. I am so glad that there are still sushi restaurants out there that can wow us with an exceptional omakase meal and would gladly be back to visit Sushi Sonagi next time we are in LA.

I was treated warmly, despite it being a slower night. One other couple was finishing their meal as I arrived. I heard that they use fresh eels instead of the pre-seasoned, pre-glazed packaged ones that are so plentiful in the US and so I had to come try it. I was hard-pressed looking for a place that uses fresh eels. The dish took some time to prepare but I came fully aware and ready. I can happily say that the kabayaki donburi was tasty and not sickeningly sweet! You could still taste the eel on top of the seasoning used to baste it. I really appreciated how they didn't take the easier way out and slap a ready-to-eat one on a bed of rice. While waiting for the unagi, I ordered ankimo in ponzu and in their own "Fukuno" style. Ponzu is always a nice contrast but Fukuno style ankimo just melted like butter. A shame that portions are never enough, but it was delicious while it lasted. Other side dishes were ordered too and they were overall good. Unfortunately, some of the items I was hoping to order were out of season (firefly squid and persimmons), so I will come back later to try them. As others have mentioned, this small restaurant is run solely by an older couple. Be sure to call ahead to make a reservation or confirm hours for the day. If you do not, you may be turned away purely due to capacity and staffing limitations or they may close early.
