We hiked out to Paradise Falls, and while the view from a distance had me thinking, "That's it?"... once you get closer, it's actually beautiful. The weather was in the 80s, with the cool breeze made the hike so much more enjoyable (especially on the steeper parts). My pup had the best time too! I would've loved to let him run free, but this isn't an off-leash park. What I really loved is that there are so many different trails. Whether you're in the mood for a quick walk, a jog, or a longer hike, you'll find a route that fits. There were lots of people out enjoying the scenery, and the nearby town has plenty of cute spots to grab a bite afterward. It was such a fun outing. I would totally do it again!

Date of the hike: 3.19.2011…read more According to my friend's GPS, we hiked 8.2 miles round trip with an elevation gain/loss of 2,000ft. We kind of just winged it and parked right at the end of Wendy Ave when you exit on the 101fwy. I think other websites out there say to park somewhere else. The hike itself had a couple signs here and there but we were still a little confused on which path to take. There's a nice waterfall about a mile into the hike and you'll have to cross a little stream. There's a lot of shade near the waterfall so it's a perfect area to rest or have a quick snack. I wish I read the description on LocalHikes.com (http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/BoneyMountainOverlook_4472.asp) a little better. Instead of making a left towards Danielson Monument we took the other path which had a gradual incline, no switchbacks here. We did get to a different hill that has a good view and found the correct way to go to the overlook. If it wasn't for our time constraints, we would have back tracked and went up the right way. Pretty popular. And, sometimes you see horse poop on the trails. I'd say 1/4th of the way in, there's a beautiful waterfall you can hang out at. Walking up the trail, you're surrounded by big green mountains. At the top of Boney Mountain, there's a 360 view of the city. Really nice. It just takes awhile to get up there. It's not too bad though. Parking here is free.

The trails are well maintained with multiple options, so you can keep it light or make it more challenging depending on your mood. The views are beautiful, especially in the early morning or at sunset, and it never feels overly crowded. It has a calm, local Ventura vibe that I really appreciate. I've also brought kids I nanny here for walks and fresh air (sticking to the easier areas), and it's such a great space to reset. One thing to note: when it's hot, be cautious of snakes on the trails--proper shoes and awareness are important. If you're looking for a reliable, scenic place to hike in Ventura that locals truly love, Arroyo Verde Park is a must.

Negatives: So many dog owners are complacent about their dogs here- they let them roam around and poop wherever and don't pick it up! It's ridiculous. I'm a dog owner myself and used to let my little dog off leash here occasionally, but after realizing there is a lot of unpredictable behavior from dogs and their owners, I don't bring her here that often anymore (unless there are not that many people)! So use caution when bringing your dog / dogs here. Trails can get super hot. Bring lots of water!

A friend recently took me to Paradise Falls, and it was such a beautiful and peaceful experience…read more We started on the Teepee Trail where we saw a really cool teepee structure, then continued down to the bottom of the falls. The waterfall is stunning from below, and the view from the top is just as spectacular. Along the way we explored a small cave and passed two beautiful creeks. We even saw some ducks flying overhead, which made the whole hike feel even more special. After that, we hiked uphill on the Teepee Trail, stopped at Lizard Rock, and eventually made our way back to the parking lot. The views throughout the hike are wonderful and so peaceful there's nothing like disconnecting and reconnecting with nature here. Parking is free and the lot is fairly large (around 40 cars or more). There are bathrooms at the trailhead and also near the campground, which is very convenient. We ended up hiking about 5 miles. It took us 2 hours and 30 minutes of moving time, and about 3 hours total including breaks and photo stops. I highly recommend this trail if you're looking for a scenic and relaxing hike.

I think the large open area has attracted golfers to 'hit some balls', but, too many kiddos and homes around. I'm rating 4 stars because of the lack of trees. I like the open area but, the park needs some shade.

Lovely trail in a residential area in the city of Newbury Park…read more The trail is easy and with a good uphill trek to get your lungs and heart beating. The trail is accessible via Rosewood Trail. The trail is narrow and you might occasionally see Mountain Bikers so be careful and aware of them. The total miles hiked were 3.3 miles. Highlight of the hike was the spectacular view. At the Peak you will find a nice bench for a picnic and a few benches to sit and soak in the sun and the views.

I've done this hike in Jan./Feb. no problem, but I just tried this hike in July and made the mistake of not bringing bug spray. I got absolutely eaten alive by mosquitos and had to turn around about half way up because the bites. I would have a cluster of 3-6 of them on each of my arms every couple of steps. If I stopped to catch my breath even more would stop and bite me. Definitely bring bug spay!!
