This was on a Wednesday and it was all walks of life and all types of music from classic to new. I walked in to an older gent who was killing it to some Al Green, "Let's Stay Together" and it was smooth as butter just like the vibes here. The night only got better from there. I tried it during the later afternoon and the vibe was even more chill. There were some regulars and we chit chatted about where we were all from and funny Cooteys stories. I played some music from my seat on TouchTunes and overall had a very relaxing time. Others were playing great jams too and wow I can't remember the last time I heard Beach Boys. But I'm here for it. Just a heads up.. This is one of those spots that charges a $20 holding credit card fee. But atleast they gave me a heads up instead of throwing it on me last minute and giving me the choice of cash. You have to walk through a velvet curtain and down some steep stairs (be careful because it's real dark). Once there, you'll notice a live DJ spinning the wheels of steel and providing some lively tunes. The place is extremely dark and has a back bar to order drinks. What you will quickly notice is this part of the bar is primarily reserved for groups that will be ordering bottle service. After a quick look at the menu, prices and considering there was only two of us I made a quick decision that this might be better saved for a time when I'm with a larger group. The bartender was really cool and let us order individual drinks as it had just opened and not full at all. That was appreciated. Tucked away on the Westside of downtown, this place is a true hidden gem, nestled in a well-established neighborhood. This past Mother's Day, I stopped by for a Sunday Funday, and wow...what a vibe! The front door was decked out in this festive, colorful "fiesta" style that immediately set the tone. The bar was buzzing with energy, cocktails flowing, close friends laughing, and yes... karaoke in full swing. One of the best surprises of the night? Running into Stephanie behind the bar. She's one of those bartenders who makes everything feel easy and fun. We ordered Mexican Martinis made with top-shelf tequila (Stephanie hyped it up as an award-winning drink and she wasn't wrong!). I also tried the Melon Margarita, which was super refreshing. The space itself has gotten some upgrades since my last visit--both inside and out. They mentioned this was actually one of their last nights open before closing for a two-week remodel. They're adding a garage door to open up the patio to the inside, and I'm already excited to see how that transforms the vibe. Parking along the street is free (along the fence line of Sam Houston) and was not an issue even for a holiday. There is a paid parking lot that is secure and available too so note that if ever you have an issue finding a good spot. Walking into Slow Ride is like walking into your tio's (uncle) or a grandpa's cool, 70's/80;s vibey, and home-y bar. This is the kind of spot where every picture you take of yourself, or your friends, will look like you took it in the 80's! This is not a bad thing either. Seriously. It IS A VIBE here! Cushy seats at the bar was my favorite spot to hang out while we had some cold beers and a shot to go alongside it too. They have beer and shot combos here around $8. You get plenty of choices on beer and liquor of choice. I opted for a tallboy Lonestar and a small shot of the Mexican Candy. My sister got a Live Oak Hefe in a can (she likes Blue Moon so this was the closest thing to it and she liked it!) and later a Shiner in a bottle. I also decided to close out with a daiquiri that was super delicious and offered in nice glassware. Patio out in the back is spacious and a great spot to hang out with a group of friends. The back space is taken care of and has a modern look to it out there. I can see it being a nice vibe outside on a pretty day too. Jukebox is legit! All great music selections from all genres on CDs and pretty cheap too to play 5-8 songs. The artwork around here is worth a look around too. I love all the unique Garfield toys surrounding the bar area too. All of the back bar is so great with the wooden shelving and lighting too. You can see many honorable nods to those who currently or have served. It's a great thing to see especially so close to Sam Houston. One thing I have a pet peeve on is any service bar who has to keep my card on file. I am the worst person who won't remember so I have to be extra careful when bars keep my card. I usually walk and don't mind paying the 20+% tab walk fee but I do want my card back so I have to get everyone who is with me to remind me to go get it. That's why I am giving it 4 stars. I am looking forward to coming back in the future and bringing some more family and friends, though. This spot is so nostalgic and their social is super active and will promote DJs and sets happening that week and into the weekend. Go check them out and play some pool.
