The tech was visibly frustrated with the difficulty of scanning my teeth because of my gum recession and exclaimed loudly in front of a room of juvenile patients, their parents, and staff as the seats are lined up with no privacy "Ugh It's your teeth!" I was completely humiliated about a health condition that has caused me severe depression and significant anxiety. Staff are insensitive to adult dental conditions.

My husband also made his appointment and was told a deep cleaning was needed and had to pay $500 for it. He called Anthem and was told this office wasn't participating in HMO. Since I have a background in health insurance, I called myself and got the same response. I've tried to reach the office manager at least eight times to resolve this problem. Once, without even being asked for a name, I was told that a correction was faxed and would be called back when it was done. Since starting this whole process, my husband received an explanation of benefits showing NOTHING was paid, including preventative services like x-rays. I actually never even received an explanation of benefits. Were my services even billed? I'm beyond frustrated because now it appears we have to find another dentist and start this whole process again. And, I'd like to have some of my money back!

Beware - Second opinion needed on anything they recommend!! I was told by Dr Ferguson and their…read moreperiodontist that I needed a front tooth removed due to bone loss and possible root issue. Wait, what? I had a deep pocket at the gum of the tooth, my tooth was strong, not broken and not loose. They made me believe this was my only option and proceeded to explain that an implant would be the way to go since a bridge wouldn't work due to the root issue. The implant procedure would be 8-9 months and I would have a flipper during that time. It was going to cost me $9k for one tooth!!! Can you imagine the anxiety and stress this caused? I decided to get a second opinion. I researched best periodontist in San Diego and after his thorough examination and panoramic X-rays he was shocked and dumbfounded as to why Santee Smiles periodontist wanted to pull the tooth, he saw no bone loss or root issue. All I needed was a minor gum surgery called Guided Tissue Regeneration that costs $1500 (claim to insurance) and get this, once he was done with the procedure he confirmed no bone loss or root issue!!! Be very careful to believe their treatment plan and get a second opinion. I am changing dentists, don't even want my teeth cleaned here, it always costs me something extra... just a money grab.

When we got a collections letter, we called and they said don't worry about it and that they would send it to the Navy. We continued to get the bills until the second collections letter arrived and we just paid it to be done with it. This has been going on for over 6 months. For those who aren't familiar with military medical, they refer you out to civilian practices when they don't have capacity to get you in. All required medical care is covered by the military for Active Duty personnel. Since my husband was retiring, that's what the Navy did. It was a requirement for his discharge from Active Duty and in no way his responsibility to pay. It's really frustrating that this small business could not get their communication figured out, and now we have to try and get reimbursed $1,000 from the military.
