This is very subpar non authentic Mexican. They don't even have Caldo soup on the menu. The food came out warm, not hot. The portions are on the medium side. I have been coming to this Santiago's for years, and last night was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had here. Everything from the service to the food to the atmosphere was outstanding. The staff was amazing. Our servers were kind, attentive, and incredibly welcoming, making sure everything was perfect throughout the evening. The food was amazing as always, flavorful and savory, and the ambiance made the entire experience feel special. This restaurant is consistently excellent, but this visit really stood out. I really liked the food. My husband and I shared a chicken fajita with corn tortillas. I told them that I was gluten free and they wiped down the flat grill to make the gluten free chicken and veggies that go with it. I highly recommend this place. I will be back when I am in town. read more

They have a fantastic coconut margarita. The music playing was perfect. It's clean inside and the staff is friendly. The food was subpar. My mom had a steak torta. She said the steak was ok. The rice was bland and dry. I had a fajita bowl. There was barely any lettuce. The chicken came in big chunks. The deep-fried tortilla bowl tasted like old grease. They made little cheese roses which I didn't understand. Shredded Chihuahua cheese would have been fine. On top was a large chunk of avocado. Should have been sliced. I have been wanting to come back here after I tried it for the first time, a few months ago. We sat at the bar on both visits and the service was efficient and friendly. We tried the Anejo Margarita special and it was very good, that's why we got this again on our second visit. The salsa was delicious but the chips didn't have the consistency in quality. These are the items that I have tried: CARNE ASADA- Cooked and seasoned perfectly. The meat comes with a choice of quesadilla (ground beef, chicken or cheese), flour or corn tortilla, beans and rice. SHRIMP & STEAK FAJITAS COMBINATION- both proteins were delicious. The dish comes with beans, rice and tortillas. SANTIAGO'S BURRITO- We added chorizo as suggested by our server. It went very well with the steak, scrambled eggs and chihuahua cheese. Yum! CHEF'S SPECIAL- The steak shishkabob enchilada and beef stuffed pepper were both flavorful and satisfying. Overall, I like the quality (except for the chips) and portions of their food and drinks. They do not skimp on whatever protein you choose on your dish and the tequila in the margaritas they make. Prices are reasonable, the place is well kept and so far, the service has been great. If I am in the area, I will definitely come back here when I crave for Mexican food and margaritas. So this place has a really American Mexican/ Tex-Mex feeling. The food was average and very "safe" for a group setting. I wish that they lacked more heat in their food especially when I asked for it to be blazing. I got Tabasco heat at most lol. I ordered Camerones a La diabla. Chipotle sautéed shrimp with a side of rice and beans. It was somewhat flavorful but needed more heat. What was really nice was the tequila selection that they offer. Rarely do I leave a one star review and I don't do so lightly, however our food was so bad that I must warn others not to spend their money here. I ordered Enchiladas Mole and Chicken Fingers for my baby. Sadly the mole was the worst I've had. I had three bites and gave the fourth to my husband to try and he agreed. The chicken was old and unseasoned. The mole sauce was not flavorful like mole usually is. It was a very bland brown sauce. The children's chicken fingers arrived as 3 small, over cooked pucks of meat that I wouldn't serve to a dog and I certainly did not serve it to my daughter. I frequent this place time and again. Generally, everything is pretty good. I would rate the food as 'okay.' Not anything extraordinary but a tad above average. But, here are a few notable things that always keep making me come back: 1) The last times I have visited, the waitresses are extremely friendly and attentive. Good customer service goes along way! 2) The margs! An authentic Mexican restaurant (especially in the suburbs ;) must have a good margarita and Santiago's definitely has it so! They're strong, not too sweet, offer a variety and add... (dun, dun) Tarjin! 3) I really appreciate their patio. Now it's not dolled up and fancy, but it's off the beaten path of a quiet downtown suburb with plenty of space for just you and the fam. Overall, for what you get it's also reasonably priced. I do find that I always have a good time here whether it's a Saturday night dinner with a relative or a brunch celebrating Father's Day; never a horrible experience. read more

This place is so very close to being a higher rated restaurant it pains me to give it only 2 stars overall. Service was the biggest drag on the rating as they appeared at our table only rarely and when we made a bit of a stink ... the waitstaff was just overwhelmed, and it was on a not so busy evening ... oh well, maybe our servers were new. 2 stars. For drinks a couple of us started with a tequila shot (4 star Casamigos blanco tequila - the George Clooney stuff poured at the table), and then everyone had a bunch of margarita's (general comment: not much booze in the margaritas) - two had the mango margaritas frozen (barely 3 stars), two had the regular margarita frozen (barely 3 stars and one came out on the rocks), and one had the Senor Santiago margarita on the rocks (4 stars because it came with a bit of Grand Marnier to give it some life); all-in-all the margaritas were not much to write home about - Pepe's are better, have more alcohol, and are priced nicer. For food we tried the enchilada trio (lucky to get 3 stars - good filling but a chewy tortilla wrap like it had been under the broiler too long); an a la carte steak burrito (3 stars ... done incorrectly as chicken at first and then redone correctly ... it was fresh but everyone else was half done by the time it came); Carne Asada a la tampiquena (a solid 3 star offering, with half a serving of skirt steak). Can't remember the other meals, but in general they were all just ok. Once again the biggest hold back on the rating was service .. it just wasn't up to our table of five. Fairly good food, overpriced and over hyped margaritas, but a nice ambiance to the restaurant. Don't think we'll be back. read more

I have been going to this restaurant since it opened and found it to be a completely different experience a few weeks ago. Most of the staff didn't speak English, the service was very lax, and I found 3 or 4 hairs in my food, not on top, that was course and black and was told by the owner that it was my hair (which is was not because I have auburn hair and it's not falling out). The owner was downright rude. I was disappointed in the atmosphere, the staff and how poor the service was. Now I understand why - there was only one other couple in the restaurant, which is a very large place, when me and my friends were there. P.S. The Margarita's weren't very small and mostly ice for $12.00 ish. This place doesn't even deserve a one (1) Star rating. read more

Wow. We have been to this place a few times and while it's not the best it's not the worst. Kind of middle of the road Mexican. We live in La Grange so it's nice and close so that's why we go. Anyway we walk in at 8:15 pm on a Saturday night and ask for a table. They lead us to the main dining room and there are literally pulling chairs and moping the floors like they are closing in 10 minutes (they are open until 10:30 pm). Nothing less appealing than a restaurant where having customers conflicts with their closing cleaning. Who wants to have a relaxing dinner with people literally pulling out chairs and moping the floor. We rented the dining area for our daughters baptism/ birthday for 40 guests and it was amazing! The service was just great, anytime your drinks were low/done, servers would make sure to ask what else they can get. The food was delicious and kept so warm for guests to serve (buffet style). The owner was very attentive and was also helping as needed. This has become my favorite go-to restaurant! The food is always delicious and the margaritas are the best. Request that they make them with fresh lime. It's a little extra money but so worth it! The wait staff is always very accommodating and so friendly. We are never disappointed every time we come here. We've had the enchiladas de mole, tacos, shrimp fajitas, and differing appetizer plates. All delicious. We usually arrive by 4pm to beat the dinner crowd. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. Have been meaning to try Santiago's for a while, but it's usually crowded on weekend nights. That's a plus for the restaurant and tells me they must have a loyal following, but our experience was somewhat disappointing. The Yelp definition of 2 stars is the best fit for us: "Meh; I've/we've experienced better." I give Santiago's stars for decor ("hacienda style," as their website describes it - truly pretty), attentive service (kudos to Blanca!) and reasonable prices. The food presentation was pleasant, too - even enhanced by unusual pairings like roasted potatoes instead of rice and black instead of refried beans. But the food was lackluster - even bland, and that's the reason for the 3-star deficiency in my rating. Granted, there's a notation on the menu that anything can be made spicy upon request, which we did not. In a Mexican restaurant, though, wouldn't you expect any notation to offer to make it LESS spicy? Bottom line, I had one of the night's specials - pork quesadillas - which were pretty tasty but also only mildly seasoned and looked more like soft-shell pork tacos than the usually more compressed quesadilla. ($12.95; see photo.) Nice that they were served with roasted potatoes and black beans. Husband Bill had seafood enchiladas ($10.95; see photo), which were the main motivation for the "meh" rating - a good amount of seafood inside but basically flavorless. I agree with an earlier reviewer who said the looks of this place are good but the food is not authentic Mexican. If you like your Mexican food mild and atmosphere is important, I'd say visit Santiago's. Otherwise, head elsewhere. read more
