Introduced my sister to Korean food on Friday night with a visit to Sarang. We were all happy with our food and the service. There are a few tables inside and a few tables outside. We were able to sit outside and watch the Bardstown Road Friday traffic. We shared the beef mandu and loved how crispy it was. My order was the beef JapChae and I will absolutely order this again. My first experience with Sarang was years ago when I got to try their mouthwatering fried chicken topped with cheese. I'm not even kidding you when I say I've been thinking about it since and have been meaning to make another trip over here. Well, I was finally able to do so recently and it reminded me why it was so memorable... the food is just THAT good! Korean is top-notch. For such a simple, unassuming place, the flavors just absolutely pop. Everything I've had there has been wonderful, and it's probably one of the most crave-worthy restaurants around. The food comes out surprisingly quickly given how small the kitchen is, and the staff is always very friendly. It's actually the place my kids request more than anywhere else in Louisville, and they each have their own favorite dishes. The bibimbap in the stone bowl is excellent, but my personal favorite is the tofu stew, which is absolutely perfect on a cold winter night. In the summer, I tend to go for the chicken wings or the Korean pancakes. Honestly, I want to try everything on the menu eventually because everything we've had so far has been that good. read more

I cannot emphasize how much I regret not getting here more. Such...good...food. Concise menu of Korean goodness. Bibimbap, dolsot (in the classic hit stone bowl!), pork katsu, dumplings...there are maybe ten dishes and every one is worth it! Good selection of teas as well that can be served hot or iced, plus a good variety of bubble tea as well (if you haven't had this delightful co concoction, just try it...tasty tea and chewy little tapioca boba, can't go wrong). Service (counter only, but they bring it to the table if you're dining in) is friendly and helpful, especially when it comes to tea choices (if you're like me, you may be able to use a little guidance on the Korean options). Sarang is a lovely compact, family-owned Korean restaurant perched on the corner of Bardstown and Eastern Parkway. The menu is available both as a large, overhead display in picture form and in trifold fliers, depending on how one best prefers to make decisions. Order at the counter, then choose one of the tables at which to await the delights which will soon arrive. The staff is quite knowledgeable about the menu items, including which contain a variety of potential allergens/common foods people avoid. Of note - one of the kimchis is vegan (cucumber) and they do offer a vegan ramyun which you should definitely try. As they were pretty steady the night we dined they hadj run out of jap chae, so I opted for veganized bibimbap (yes tofu, no egg). The veggie and kim-mari mandoo are also vegan, however the soondobu jigae is made with oyster sauce, so keep that in mind if trying to stay plant based. Pricing is quite reasonable for the quality and the amount of food, and the owner is just delightful. Although I'm sad I didn't get to try the jap chae this time, it does give me an excellent reason to return. read more

I was in town for work, and I felt like having Korean for dinner - after looking at a few possible options and their reviews, I picked Sarang! This is why I love Yelp- it makes it easy to decide where to eat in a new city! It was a weekend night but luckily I was able to find a parking spot at the lot behind the building. This is a sit down dining but more affordable, I believe it is because it is not full service and there are no small plates that come with food. It is okay for me, I was alone and wasn't too hungry I had japchae and it had a lot of meat and veggies. I loved it. Highly recommended for casual, fast but tasty dinner. read more

Solid Korean food in the Highlands in an informal setting! We live down in Etown, and this place was high up on my list to try whenever we come up. We came for a quick dinner. The interior is tight and unassuming, which was no problem! We usually love these types of places. The menu looks pretty simple and straightforward, but there was a little bit of confusion on our end. I got the Dak Kangjung and my husband got the sweet beef bulgogi. I thought both of them were supposed to come with kimchi, but only the bulgogi did? I don't know. The staff was not super attentive on this, they seemed pretty indifferent. We didn't want to bug them about it, and they didn't look like they wanted to be bugged about it. The Dak Kangjung chicken was a generous portion, as it was big pile of chicken. It tasted alright, I wasn't in love with the sauce. The bulgogi was much better, much more subtly and thoughtfully flavored. The portion, however, was teeny tiny. It ended up more or less balancing out, and we kind of shared meals. Overall this was alright. I'd try it again, and maybe try some of the different menu items. read more

Food was fast and quality was excellent. I witnessed the staff deftly handling a miscommunication when a woman brought up an issue with her bulgogi. She'd wanted something other than beef but her ordering style made it sound like she wanted beef + seafood. (Bulgogi is traditionally beef. Seafood is an odd request.) Their beef bibimbap dol sot was so good, it brought me back to the first time I'd ever had it. The cabbage kimchi had a perfect balance of spice and crunch. I'm not actually sure whether the restaurant has improved, or my perspective has changed since my last visit a few years ago, but I really enjoyed my beef bibimbap yesterday (along with all three panchan), and thought $11 was a fair price, especially in this inflationary environment. Today's order was due to a craving for tteok-bokki (spicy stir-fried rice cake). I went down the rabbit hole of searching all nearby Korean Restaurants around me and rediscovered Sarang. It's been several years since I have been there, so I tried to find a website, menu and hours online. The only website they have is on Facebook, but there hasn't been a post since 2015 so I wasn't sure if it was still open. I called the number but there was no info on the answering machine, just a beep. So I waited until 11 am and tried to call again. The phone was answered promptly by a very friendly and nice employee. I was able to place an order to-go, and was told it would take 10-15 minutes. This restaurant is located next to Qdoba on Bardstown and Eastern Parkway. There is no parking on Eastern, so you can park on Bardstown Road or in the parking lot behind. When I arrived for pickup my order was sitting on a table near the door ready to go. I paid at the register and was able to pickup a menu, which is in the photos. A very quick and contactless process! I ordered the tteok-bokki (rice cakes), bibimbap with beef (assorted veggies on rice, topped with beef and fried egg) and Kimbap (wrapped bulgogi sushi roll with egg and veggies). Let's start with the tteok-bokki, which definitely hit the spot. It wasn't very spicy, which my husband prefers. It also had onions and fish cakes in it. The Kimbap was very good. The portion is large and came with ten large pieces. I would highly recommend. The bibimbap with beef was delicious once I added hot sauce and a little soy sauce. All in all it was very good! Sarang is a great local Korean place on Bardstown Rd. They have parking in the back and the restaurant itself is pretty small. The service and food are amazing. My go-tos are the Beef Bulgogi, Bibimbap, and Korean fried chicken. They have very flavorful and fresh kimchi that comes with bulgogi and bibimbap. The hospitality in this family business is more than loving and they go out of their way to describe what their dishes consist of. They are pretty small so don't expect to have a seat every-time. I always try to leave an honest review and avoid typing anything until after I've eaten somewhere a few times. I remember when Sarang was not a place to get food but a dessert place called Cefiore. They served the best taro root froyo around and served it with fruits, and nuts and other toppings of your choice. Fast forward a few years, and it is no longer Cefiore, but Sarang. Still owned by the same people, it is a great Korean spot with some delectable menu items to keep vegetarians and meat eaters happy. Sarang means love in Korean, and that is something that you definitely taste when you Decide to eat here. The quality and taste is consistent, and the portions are large. Even better is that the price is more than reasonable for what you get. When you walk in, the establishment is not very large, but it is a quiet space with a modern feel. The employees are kind, and the food is always delicious. What more can you really ask for aside from good prices, large portions, consistent quality, and appetizing meals. Also, being a fan of bubble tea, a person like me wants to go a little nuts. I always want one of everything!!! Such a great little gem tucked away in the highlands. Thanks to Sarang, I am a fan of Korean food. Everything I tried was good and the prices were fair. I had the spicy rice cakes and kimbap which was spot on. They also have Boba Tea which is a trendy food/drink for some reason. I did not try it because I am very picky with tea due to the fact I think it's gross 99.999% of the time. I saw others drinking it and they seem to enjoy it. There is not a lot of seating so if you go during a busy time, you may have to wait for a table to open. That is really the only negative thing I have to say. Overall, I'm happy with Sarang and wouldn't mind returning if someone suggested it to me. read more

We haven't visited Sarang since before Covid and our recent experiences haven't been as favorable as they use to be. The spicy pork hasn't had any flavor and the white rice tastes like plastic. However, my husband orders the dak-kangjung and it has flavor. Not many options for Korean side dishes to add on top of the fish. And the kim chi doesn't taste fermented. It tastes a bit like water. In addition, the fried rice has flavor whereas the normal rice taste like plastic. Order the fried rice with kimchi. I'm not sure if cooking methods have changed or what. I know they've been crazy busy with online orders so maybe the same time and energy isn't going into the food as it once was. read more

A fast casual Korean restaurant with a limited menu. I love this concept; we're so programmed to have Americanized fast casual restaurants. Please popularize this for other cuisines. They have fairly limited banchan, but again, it's a small fast casual joint. What they do have was decent enough. We ordered the ramyun, soondubu Jjigae, and dak gangjung (spicy hot). Ordered takeout: called the order in, and walked down to pickup only 10 minutes after ordering. Everything was packaged by the time we arrived. Paid by credit card. Service was fast and friendly. Carry out containers arr cardboard with plastic tops for the cylindrical rice containers; everything is recyclable. The food is great and the portions are substantial. We had Dak-kangjung and chicken fried rice. The dark-kungjung was the soy sauce version, with some sesame seeds; it was very good, but next time I'm getting the spicy version. The chicken fried rice was outstanding. It was very moist, and tons of chicken - it could easily stand alone. I walked, so I really don't know about parking. Once we are through the Covid-19 crisis I imagine that grabbing a bite to eat outside on the patio overlooking Eastern Parkway and Bardstown Road would be a great option. read more

I like Sarang. I hate that I always forget about it when considering where I want to eat. I'm not sure why I do that. The location, maybe? It's in a prime location, but it's a very small place. I dunno. Anyhow. The prices are reasonable enough. And they have whatever you want, really. Soup, bibimbap, bubble tea...whatever you like. The flavor of the food is terrific. Although a little bit *too* spicy. You'll want to make sure the person behind the counter clarifies for you how spicy your dish is before you order it. 4* for being such a tiny restaurant. I enjoyed this place a lot. It's a cute mom and pop shop and they set it up sooo well to reflect Korean culture. They have signs to explain what each food and drink is and the health benefits of some. They have K-pop playing on TV. They even have snacks and drinks from Korea. Food wise, we tried the bibimbap with beef and the jap chae with beef. I also had the coffee bubble tea. Everything was cooked well and well spiced. The coffee bubble tea was interesting...it was strong and bitter but still flavorful. The tapioca was a mix of uncooked but mostly cooked boba. Still good though. Probably not the most authentic korean restaurant out there. I especially did not like their kimchi, it was not fermented correctly/ long enough; I was basically given raw cabbage with spicy paste. The beef mandu was pretty decent. The flavor was good and the stuffing was quite juicy. The soft tofu stew was very different than what I've normally had; the taste was different and milder with a "healthier" twist I feel like. The rice was also very mushy.
