I have my usual go-to for Indian food in the area, but my wife and I were excited to try Sargam for dinner because we had been given a gift certificate. We'd been there once, years ago, and couldn't really remember it much. We walked in and waited a solid 5 minutes (or more) for someone to come to the front acknowledge us, and there were others waiting as well. We assumed that they must be very busy, but they only had a few tables of customers. The atmosphere wasn't nice, but it was ok. We didn't expect fine dining vibes. There were no table cloths, and a mint green paint job which matched the color of the napkins. We ordered the "vegetarian feast" and also the butter chicken; we wanted to sample different items and probably bring home leftovers. The first thing that came out was the chai tea, which was fine. After a little wait, the samosas arrived. The samosas were delicious, and we agreed that they were the best we'd ever had. The two sauces they served with the samosas were also very tasty. Unfortunately, that was the last great thing about our experience at Sargam. The wait for the rest of the food was quite long. We weren't in a hurry, but it was definitely longer than should be acceptable at a restaurant. (All in all we were there for about 90 minutes). When the food finally came out, one of the items was missing from the vegetarian feast (the "two naris"). We didn't notice until later that we never got this item. The food's taste was average. Perhaps below average for the Indian food in the Bay Area. The chicken was not very tender but it wasn't terrible. We ordered the food "medium spicy" but there was zero spice. Also, the temperature wasn't as hot as it should be. Most of the items were almost luke warm. The nan wasn't anything special. It wasn't as tasty (or warm) as it is at most places we've been to. At the end, we were supposed to get two desserts, according to the menu's description (photo attached) of the vegetarian feast. They never came. We wrapped up our leftovers and I asked the woman (who seemed to be the manager), who had taken our order and also brought us our check, if we were going to get the desserts. She gave me a horrible look. She looked as if I had said something terrible, and acted like she had no idea what we were talking about. I explained that the dessert was on the menu as part of the "vegetarian feast". We waited about five more minutes and no dessert came out. I decided to pay and leave; we were full anyway. Sargam has "acceptable" food and ambience, long waits, and bad service with missing items. Also, they added a "service fee" of 3.5% to the check (which was not mentioned anywhere on the menu). Weird. $20 All You Can Eat Lunch Buffet?! Ummm.... Yes please!! I came here for lunch today with friends, and had no idea there was such an amazing buffet. I only wish I was 20 years younger so I could have splurged even more. Everything was so delicious. I especially loved the fresh, hot naan they brought to our table, perfect for dipping in all the dishes. My personal favorites were the chicken tikka masala, the karami paneer, the chicken pasanda, and the chicken tikka. There Walter a lot of vegetarian options as well. Food is just ok at best for dine in or takeout. I've been eating at Sargam on occasion as a last resort for years, and quality is never consistent. I've been on an Indian kick lately and hate to leave less than favorable reviews for both "flagship" Indian restaurants in Walnut Creek, but they both need to step up their game. From price-matching each other's menus and equally as inconsistent in quality of food, this instance is one of those times I need to speak up. I ordered my favorite dish last week and when it arrived most items were fine, except my main dish. Instead of getting a curry I'd describe what I got as dirty tomato soup. I gave it a second bite before I asked my friend to try it before I complained. She said it tasted like dishwater mixed with Spaghetti-O's. It was awful and went straight into the garbage and we jumped in the car to go to a Chinese place. As I said the food kind of sucks at Sargam (and Saroor) and there aren't any good Indian restaurants (that I'm aware of) in Walnut Creek as an alternative. The nearest good Indian restaurant is in Lafayette. Go there instead. Prices are similar, food and service are great, and it's not a dump. read more

My wife Barbara and I go way back with Sargam, and continue to share a weekend buffet, on the patio if the weather is ok. The buffet doesn't change much, but I tell you, we were there this afternoon, and I can't imagine a better combination of tastes than what I had: 3 each of the small fish pakoras and the fried chickpea flour ones; a portion of tasty white rice; a delicious cup of yellow dal; and a goodly portion of goat curry. All of this along with the yummy Naan that was brought to out table. Sargam is a tried and true venue for us (We go back a couple of decades and have dined there with so many friends over the years I probably can't even remember them all. If you're anywhere near Walnut Creek, give it a try! (Have a look at the many photos of the food. I only have one to share today of the establishment at night. I came here for a weekday lunch, we arrived for a pretty late lunch around 1:45pm. I did call the restaurant to find out what time their lunch buffet ends, they said 3:15PM. When we arrived, the restaurant was completely empty. We were the only party here. The parking lot here is pretty tiny but since we were the only party here, parking wasn't an issue but if there's a lot of people here, I can only imagine the lot will fill up. The lunch buffet has these the food in these cart like things, so I imagine there's a heater keeping the food warm. There's a handful of options such butter chicken, samoas, fried fish, salad, tandoori chicken. I like the tandoori chicken dish. Naan came out fresh but it seemed a "cracker" after it rested and cooled down. Customer service is essentially non existent. No one really checked in on us or did anything. Due to us arriving "late", we definitely did not see any addition of new food come in. Some of the dishes were almost out but I guess they didn't have any incentive to refill it if we were the only ones there. The food was okay overall. However, I do think other Indian buffets have better and more variety of food. I don't think I'll be returning. Also, they have a 3.5% surcharge for credit card. I find this very annoying, I am not sure if they have the right to charge for a surcharge but most restaurants don't do this so I am definitely not returning. read more

Sargam is such a hidden gem! There's honestly not many Indian options in the Concord/Walnut Creek area (besides Naan and Curry), and out of them both, I now would prefer Sargam. As soon as you walk in it's like walking into someone's home. The food smelled delicious, and tasted just as good. We got the vegetable samosas, chicken tikka masala (my personal favorite) and the grilled mixed platter that had all the different kinds of spiced meats (this was also amazing). The best part was dipping the leftover tandoori chicken from the platter into the remaining masala curry. AYCE Lunch Buffet is actually pretty decent and reasonably priced per person. Food options were quite tasty, with the standard tandoori chicken, Naan, and an assortment of curries and stews. I liked the goat curry but it did have too many bones. It's pretty dead during lunch hour and the restaurant is furnished more like a cafeteria, so if you want a quiet spot for lunch by yourself, it's decent. The floor was sticky , at the register They had sticky notes all over it and all these little notes it just looked dirty. Lunch buffet everyday!! 11 AM - 3 PM for $20! If you love having a selection of Indian dishes to choose from, without committing to ordering entrees a la carte, this is the option for you. My first time here so not sure if the buffet offerings differ day to day or weekend vs. weekday, but this is what we had to try on a Sunday: Fish tikka masala Chicken tikka masala Chicken Biriyani Saag paneer (creamed spinach with chunks of paneer cheese) Matar mushroom (peas and mushrooms) Eggplant curry Pakora curry (creamy yogurt based curry with fried veggie pakoras) Tandoori Chicken and fish Fried vegetable pakora w/ random fried veggie spring rolls Samosas Garden Salad Watermelon Assorted Chutneys Dessert: Carrot pudding Kheer Naan is included, they'll bring you a basket to your table. They don't ask you what flavor you'd like before they automatically bring you a basket of plain naan so I don't know if garlic was an option :( The naan is super fresh and clearly made to order. If you run out, you can request more. The waiter we had seemed a little clueless about what to do though, as he didn't bring us any water until the hostess reminded him. There weren't a lot of diners, just a couple families and 2 other couples. We had a hard time communicating (can we have more naan, can I have a new spoon, etc) and he had to grab the hostess to help. The hostess casually walked around the dining room and in between tables, observing diners, so it was a bit awk but also helpful in case we needed to ask her anything. The buffet options were decent, not the most plentiful especially considering the price, however buffets are pretty scarce nowadays. Would have been nice to have a different protein other than chicken or fish. I get why lamb wouldn't be offered but maybe 1 more paneer dish would be appreciated. I didn't care for any of the curries other than the tikka masala, and I hope this isn't blasphemous but I mixed the tikka masala with the saag paneer and just WOW. So good! TBH I think I rather just go else where and order individual entrees. Yes lunch/dinner would cost more, but I'd be more satisfied with the quality of what we were eating, in addition to having left overs to pick apart for another meal. I'm going to keep my eyes open for other Indian buffets because this one just doesn't really hit the mark for me. Also, it was wrapped in very heavy duty foil, and this may sound surprising, but my son got a cut, like a paper cut, but deeper, from the foil. I recently had a very concerning experience at Sargam Indian Cuisine Restaurant, that I feel compelled to share. We ordered take out from this restaurant on March 11 to be consumed over 2 to 3 meals. We opened the lamb biryani box on March 12th when suddenly in the middle of the meal, My husband accidentally bit on something inedible. Thinking it was a piece of bone in a boneless lamb biryani box, he spit out a piece of blade. Needless to say, this was an extremely distressing and potentially dangerous discovery. The blade was sharp enough to cut through thick paper. I immediately contacted the restaurant to inform them of what had happened, and while they offered us a free dinner, the owner denied that the incident had taken place at their restaurant. Instead the owner indirectly tried to pin the whole incident on us. Considering we are moving out of state in 3 days, we are living out of disposable plates and spoons. There is no way for the food to be mishandled on our end. When my husband tried explaining to him that he is not comfortable dining at this restaurant again, the owner hung up while he was still in the middle of the sentence. This lack of accountability and concern for the safety of their customers is completely outrageous. I will be reporting the incident to the local health department and provide them with photos of the blade and the food box. I hope that this will prompt an investigation and ensure that proper food safety measures are put in place at the restaurant. Overall, I would caution others to be wary of dining at Sargam and to thoroughly inspect their food before consuming it. This experience has left us both feeling uneasy and low key traumatized. read more

We used to love the food there, it is really tasty. However, this time I had a most horrible, once-in-a-lifetime experience: a good-sized cockroach baked into the naan. I am gagging even as I post this review. The chefs there are really competent, but the hygiene is absolutely gross, and that is the management's fault. I'm never ordering anything from there again, which is sad, because the food tasted so good, cockroach juice and all. Who knows what else is ground into the masala. read more
