Like other reviewers have said, there is nothing impressive about them, they are edible but considering we requested my boyfriend's sandwich to not have oil and vinegar, and both sandwiches tasted exactly the same and equally bland my guess is they don't use quality ingredients and everything is just meh. The macaroni salad was too sweet and I didn't even finish it. Will not order again. Definitely not worth almost $9 per sandwich. Good little sub shack close to me. Good for large appetites .... I split a steak sandwich with a friend and it ran me about $12 for the large. I really liked that the woman who prepped the sandwich chopped all the veggies in front of me. We ordered from Sarge's last night via EAT24 for the first time and while the food was decent and sort of reminded me or real subs back in the Philly/DE area the value was seriously lacking. The entry level pricing is very inexpensive but upon further inspection you find out that that pricing is for a "mini" and that the regular costs about 60% more. We opted for the regular since we were planning for a dinner portion but when the order arrived (30 minutes late) the regular size was only about 6" long with a modest amount of toppings. After finishing my "snack" I perished the menu one more time and saw that the giant size, which I would imagine is closer to a normal size sub, priced out at more than 40% higher than the regular. The neighborhood really was lacking a classic sub shop but based on this experience it's unlikely that I'll add Sarge's in to my regular rotation. read more

The food can be hit or miss, depending on what you order. I had a cold sub, and liked that the meats and cheese were all sliced fresh. The bread was really nothing great, and maybe even a little disappointing. Toppings were generously applied, but the shredded lettuce was already browning. My husband had the chicken parm sandwich, and wasn't impressed. The chicken is like those little frozen patties, not fresh made. He did enjoy the cheese though, and thought it was the best part of the sandwich. The ladies working were really nice and friendly, and seemed to genuinely enjoy their job and take pride in their work. The interior seemed comfortable and inviting, definitely a place I'd sit at and eat. Overall, I'd go back, but it's definitely not my favorite place. read more

I truly hate when good service comes with suspect food. It simply shouldn't exist. Enough with the small talk, I'm not one for cold heroes, my thing is cheesesteaks. Having one from here makes me want to become a vegetarian, that's how tasteless and unattractive their cheesesteak is. Following in the unfortunate tradition of Subway and Blimpie, they use a convection oven to prepare their steaks. I don't know why I was expecting them to use an open grill top. Silly me and my high hopes...I asked for the disappointment, I know. Three minutes later and grayish semi-cooked strips of what's supposed to be steak comes out on a hot plate. Then onions, peppers and cheese are added to the hot plate and back into the oven the steaks go for another minute or two. What comes next is a mess of gooey, rubbery, gray-colored gamey meat on a hero. Passing this off as a legit cheesesteak sandwich is embarrassing if not insulting. I'm stopping short of giving this spot one star because the service was great and the folks were friendly. And their condiments counter was lush with fresh fixings, ripe red tomatoes and all. Terrible. The bread is stale perhaps sitting for more than 7 days. Barely any meat and cheese. Capicola taste like baloney. Overall everything is not fresh because they do not get traffic, the ingredients sit around for a good amount of time. Northern jersey needs a tastee sub shop or even jersey mikes. Seriously the best sandwiches around! They aren't flimsy like chain places. They make a real sub hero! Their chili is hearty and filling especially on cold days and what else can you say about a place that also makes their own sodas. Very large delivery area and friendly staffing. I don't write a lot of reviews but I needed to write one here because I have so many complicated feelings about Sarge's. On the one hand Sarge has some of the best sandwiches in the tri-state area but on the other hand I feel I was deceived because Sarge is not a real veteran. The good: After my first Sarge sub my mouth watered for days and I yearned for the next time I would be able to taste another. The sandwiches are high quality, not like the fake junk you get at Blimpie or Subway. This is the real deal! The place is clean and I really enjoy the seating area with comfy leather couches. It's a great place for a date if you want to do dinner and a movie. They don't serve alcohol so you have to sneak that in and drink in the bathroom, but they do have their own brand of delicious sodas. The memorabilia on the walls is almost like a historical war museum which is really cool. I've actually learned a lot about war from just hanging out there. And if you don't have the time to dine in, the delivery is really fast and sometimes Sarge even brings it himself. The bad: I started going there because I like to support businesses owned by veterans but I've come to find out that Sarge has never actually served. This really disappointed me because I really thought my money was going to an American hero. He does donate money to Wounded Warriors so at least it still helps veterans but I was still sad to find out Sarge never dressed in the red white and blue. The sandwiches all have military themed names which is awesome but hoping he adds a "Don't ask, Don't tell" sandwich to the menu to represent my LGBTQ brothers and sisters. All in all I have to highly recommend this place. You won't find a better sub in the tri-state area. read more

The chicken on my chicken parm sub was just a premade, frozen, out of the box filet. It wasn't even warmed thoroughly and still cold in the center. The bread was stale. The marinara sauce and cheese were also gross. $6.75 for a small cold piece of chicken with cheese and sauce on stale bread with no toppings? Makes me miss the $5 Subway foot longs. read more

With an already crowded field comprising Subway, Blimpie and Subz Up, this new sub shop in Cliffside Park NJ should amaze to survive. Sadly this one fails to do that on any level. With its subs at about twice the price of the competitors and lack of bread choices (only 2) they certainly need to up-their-game if they want to compete. It appears that they spent all their time working on the cutesy menu (different roles in the military) but failed to actually bring any good, quality ingredients through the door of this Palisade ave eatery in Cliffside Park NJ. Fresh baked bread and locally cooked chicken would have been a start. Take a walk into one of the other sandwich shops( like Subway on River Road) and figure out what they do well. Then one-up them by making the experience and product better and fun - Not a hard concept, but it does take guts. This place is like a thousand other failed Italian sub shops, that time has passed by, except this is a new establishment where dozens of other businesses have failed. When the local high school is out for the day , this place fills up with kids, but no one is actually eating their food, which is a poor sign. The couches are a nice touch, but I think you have taken the wrong things from the Starbucks model. The couch has to be a magnet for the clientele that you WANT to attract. Word to the owners: - Ditch the high-schoolers. - Clean up the counter. - Let the customers see the sub being made (get all the crap off the counter) - Clean up the decor - clean and simple works the best. - Light the counter properly - LED lighting brings out the natural colors in food. - Bring in some good, fresh ingredients - Give more bread options - Provide and market premium coffee - or give the crap stuff away for free to customers - Charge appropriately - if its double Blimpie then you better have a story to tell why. The first time I ordered for delivery, I thought it was decent but the cole slaw and potato salad was very gelatinous and old, but the italian sandwich was good. So the next time, I decided to walk over and try the Chicken Parmigiana. After ordering, I saw the guy pull the chicken cutlet out of the fridge, threw it in the microwave, then put some canned sauce on. Was shocked cause I would've thought the chicken would've been fresher or at least even thrown in a fryer or something... It was really disappointing; especially for the price. You might as well just go to the dirty Blimpies right around the corner and get the same level of food quality and dining cleanliness. I noticed this new sub shop opened up a few weeks ago when I was driving by so I decided to stop in today. On their menu is a selection of hot and cold subs available in mini, regular, and large sizes and also salads. I ordered their signature 'Sarge's' sub, which is basically your typical italian combo and I have to say I was impressed! You can tell that the owner has made it a priority to focus on quality ingredients. He even offered a sharp provolone instead of the regular (which I gladly accepted) and it gave the sandwich a nice bite. They have a selection of fresh toppings for you to choose from (hot cherry peppers for the win!) for no extra charge. I hope this place sticks because there aren't many places in the area to get a decent sub. To get to 5 stars, I would suggest they change their bread to something a little fresher and crustier (maybe with seeds) and to offer raw red onion instead of yellow/white for their toppings (they are little sweeter and less onioney). I'm happy to see that they offer delivery ($10 min) and it looks like they will be taking credit cards (cash only for now until its set up) read more
