What's odd is that it's not old--I saw staff moving rice cookers full of fresh rice. It's just not cooked right. This is one of the few Sarku restaurants open in Maryland, and we were craving for chicken teriyaki. We usually go to the one located in Laurel, but it is temporarily closed due to pandemic. We noticed the chicken teriyaki is tastier and bigger here than at Laurel, which comes with steamed rice and mixed vegetables for $7.39. We ordered inside and our food was ready in 10 minutes. The only setbacks were the following things. First, they do not accept the national stamp card here that is used at all other Sarku locations (where you buy 5 teriyaki entrees, get 1 free). Instead, they have their own local stamp card (where you buy 7 teriyaki entrees, get 1 free with purchase of a soft drink). The cashier did not volunteer their stamp card until we asked. Second, the elderly Asian woman manager was cranky and refused to explain why our stamp card wasn't accepted. Just "no" was provided. She also was trying to charge for yum yum sauce that was free with entrees. These are trying times to make money, but friendly customer service is needed here. read more

Zero stars for styrofoam cups and bowls. The seaweed was good though! The salmon sashimi was bomb but the whitefish was kinda funky to chew. Again, service was great and everything was clean, I'd just like to see them not serve hot soup and tea in styrofoam - for that reason alone I'd probably not come here again until and unless that was changed. This place is like the fast food version of Japanese food, quick and affordable. Typically Japanese restaurants charge arm and leg to get maki rolls or any meat dish. But this place has the hibachi style grilled meat (chicken, beef, shrimp) for about $10 or less. Of course the quality isn't great but it will get you full. The teriyaki sauce is pretty good but sometimes they over do it and the rice gets salty. I usually get the bento box that comes with meat, rice, salad with ginger dressing, fried dumplings, and california rolls. I mean it is a lot of food for one person in my opinion. The variety that comes with the bento box is good. I would say this is the place to go for less expensive and quick Japanese food and would recommend it. Can't give more stars though because the quality of the food isn't like a restaurant and the rice they use for the california roll is usually kind of hard and dry. read more

Sigh... I'll start by saying that Sarku as a franchise hasn't disappointed me food wise. They are one of the most consistent chains in this area. However, this location will NEVER receive any business from me again. I went in one evening to grab dinner and there was a group of maybe 15 (10 kids and 5 adults). They all ordered before me and ordered quite a bit of sushi and teriyaki. Each kid and adult placed their order one by one and then one person paid at the end. So when it was time for me to order I wanted both sushi and teriyaki, and was told there would be about an 8 minute wait on the sushi. I said that was perfectly fine. 25 minutes later, I'm still waiting for my sushi. The party before me apparently was not aware of how many pieces of sushi came in an order. So although person A ordered a California roll and person C ordered a California roll, the chef making the sushi put both orders on the same plate so they assumed it was one order. When they were made aware of what happened they ordered more sushi on the spot. THESE ORDERS were still filled before mine. Which isn't fair to me or other patrons that were behind them. Additionally, when the cashier (Miguel) was trying his best to sort out with the sushi chef (Hong Yen) how many sushi orders were they missing versus how many were filled she screamed at him at the top of her lungs. She belittled and berated him as if it was his fault that SHE was combining orders and couldn't keep up with the combination plates even though it wasn't ordered that way. She even came around the counter and yelled at the group pointing at the sushi saying what they ordered versus what was on the table. I was so taken a back that I just wanted a refund for my sushi and wanted to leave the establishment. I will never visit this location again as long as that sushi chef is still employed there as her customer service and employee relations are terrible. I suggested that Miguel file a complaint with the owner as no HUMAN deserves to be talked to in that manner. read more

That said, this is some legit fast food--I would definitely hit this place up before Wendy's or Mickey D's! The staff is nice, the place is quick, and the stirfrys are pretty big, tasty, and cheap. Sarku Japan was a little bit better than we were expecting it to be, but that doesn't make it great. I'm not familiar with this chain, but I get the feeling they also exist in food courts. This one, however, is a free standing location in a strip mall. Service was very friendly. The restaurant was clean. The food came out pretty quickly (though, it all seems to be pre-made). Portions were fairly big and the prices were reasonable. I had the teriyaki chicken which included a good bit of chicken. My wife's tofu bento box, however, was severely lacking in the tofu part of the tofu bento box. Both of our main dishes were acceptable, though not outstanding. The side items were a big disappointment though. The miso soup was clearly a packet mix and was incredibly watery. The salad was rendered inedible by a "nasty" salad dressing. I came here before a movie with my lady and grabbed a decent lunch for the two of us. I have to say that my original plan was to grab lunch next door but the wait at this other restaurant was over an hour so ended up stopping by here! Fortunately I've eaten over at this chain before, only in the Pacific Northwest so I said why not. This place has better than average food, and a decent place to sit and enjoy your meal. Not too bad for a fast food place. I usually get the teriyaki chicken bento box, and for a decent price you get a lot of variety. You get rice (I pick fried rice), teriyaki chicken (tender and flavorful), salad with ginger dressing, 4 pieces of california roll sushi, and 2 fried dumplings. I'm the type to get tired of my food if it's only one flavor so I like that I can get a little taste of everything. I get the miso soup as well and while it's clearly instant soup with weird "tofu" pieces in it, it's not too terrible and still tastes like miso soup. The service is fast and for the price you get a decent amount of food so I'll continue to come here when I'm craving Japanese food but want something quick and affordable. read more

I give this place a weak 3 stars. Probably closer to 2.75 in the World of Sushi, but, yeah... Yelp. As far as sushi goes, you come here looking for a place to sit down and eat grocery store sushi. Okay, maybe SLIGHTLY better than grocery store, but if you come here with that idea in mind, you won't be disappointed when you sit down to eat. They aren't cheap, by any stretch, but the sushi is okay. The restaurant is clean and service is good. I come here when I want reasonably acceptable sushi at fast food speed. ---2.5 Stars--- If you don't know what Sarku is, you either A) didn't spend your high school years going to Montgomery Mall every day, B) have never been to a food court at a mall, or C) don't walk by the food court at the mall every time you go to the mall to get free samples. YUMMY YUMMY CHICKEN!" though lately, the hyper Chinese lady has been replaced by a complacent Hispanic male. So imagine my surprise when I noticed a standalone Sarku opening up in College Park. I guess when Panda Express moved out of the food court, Sarku had to follow suit. Food - $5.69 for teriyaki chicken, carb (rice: brown, white, fried, or noodles), and veggies, all covered with a healthy dose of grease. Trust me: you could do worse in College Park. Much worse. Extra meat is $1.50 (used to be $0.99 in high school. CURSE YOU INFLATION! CURSE YOU!). The "sushi" isn't very good, but it's also not terrible. Cali Roll (6 pieces) for $3.99 isn't bad but it's also not very good. Hot sauce is provided via communal bottles of Sriracha, a.k.a., cock sauce. Location - located next to Ikea and Buffalo Wild Wings, the latter of which I've begun to abhor due to their terrible, terrible customer service. Thankfully, Sarku has it's own parking area, especially since the BWW lot becomes a cluster on game nights. Service - food takes about 5-10 minutes. Even though they don't provide sampos, I'll still round up to 3 stars b/c $6 for greasy Asian food is a decent deal. read more

I do not know if they are under new management, but the food quality has to be downgraded. This location gives you lo-mein noodles instead of soba noodles. Their sushi is not made correctly and they roll very small. They have the nerve to cut each sushi piece in HALF and call it 2 pieces! Personnel is not as attentive and friendly as before. So I'm used to eating from Sarku Japan in mall foodcourts, which never disappoints. This was the first time I've tried one of their stand-alone restaurants, and I have to say it was pretty good! I got a beef bento box, which comes with rice topped with teriyaki beef and mushroom, salad with ginger dressing, and 4 california rolls... all for $8 and some change! Not a bad deal if you ask me. Haha.. we've spent a large amount of time at IKEA, and everyime we've gone here we have gone to this restaurant. I don't particularly like IKEA's own restaurant (or their bathroom, ick!) and we were really excited to see a Japanese fast food place! To me, the most memorable thing about this place is the plaque and stones outside of it. Right next to this restaurant is the remains of an historical "Brown's Tavern" where apparently George Washington used to stop by for some beers on the way back and forth to DC/VA. We found this the most interesting thing about the area in general. As for the restaurant, which literally, these ruins and plaques are in its backyard, the food was very good and pretty cheap. I see in earlier reviews that this is a common food court place, but I've never seen or heard of it in a food court. As a stand-alone restaurant I found it pretty good! In the end, for some reason, I come back to Brown's Tavern. I think more effort should be made to publicize it. We were very excited to stumble upon a place that was "frequented" by George Washington just outside our IKEA. If Washington was actually a regular here more should know about it. I am very interested in the history of the area in general and want to learn more! read more

Fresh, quick and decent food for a decent price. Hibachi fast food. All made fresh and quick to order. I like the spring rolls and have only had the teriyaki chicken with noodles/fried rice.
