Found this place on a Yelp search while driving around downtown looking for a yummy place. (In town for the day shopping with girlfriend) Family owned and run, friendly staff, super clean (you don't walk out with your clothes stinking like fried food all day). The food was delicious! The greens were the BEST I've ever had. Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, yummy Mac and cheese. Everything we ordered was excellent! They bring out a fresh pan of cornbread every few minutes to refill the basket on your table. We will definitely be back! read more

OMG. What an incredible lunch. I chose the pork tenderloin, sweet corn, squash, and pinto beans. The pork was fork-tender with outstanding gravy; corn may have been the best I've ever had; squash had grilled onions in it; beans were slightly above average. Also had homemade corn bread. The place has a nice ambience. It even has a room you can use for business meetings or small intimate my wife and I went there at lunch and they served it buffet style. We could choose 1-, 2- or 3-meat plates and the prices ($7.99/$8.99/$9.99) are very reasonable for the huge portions! The beef tips smothered over the rice was mouth watering. The pork chop was to die for. We were told that they will have a band playing on Fridays and Saturdays which will make the place more appealing. We're definitely going back! read more

Food was dry bland and terrible, service was the worst I've seen in a while. I wouldn't recommend this place to a soul in hell. And then I had kids with me who rather have burgers than the buffet food and they said they didn't mind waiting for it to be cooked. It took almost an hour for them to bring that to the table and the kids didn't want the food anymore and when the burgers got to the table a giant fly landed in the plates. We all ordered the chicken and waffles with mac and cheese, besides one of us, he got mashed potatoes with brown gravy. He said they were great. The service was good, our waiter seemed new (very shy/awkward) but nothing bad. Seemed very family oriented and operated, in a good way. Looked like the owner herself was there serving food and walking around, which is amazing. But I do have to say, they had a saxophone player there and he played along to an AALIYAH song. The service was very friendly and courteous. After that everything else went downhill. We love salt but they really over salt their food. My wife had to exchange her green beans for something else because they where to salty. My smothered pork chops came out stone cold. They replaced it but it still wasn't hot enough. After I paid the bill I realized that they had overcharged me by $10.00. I read anther review where they had done the same thing to them. It would seem that this is a problem here. Well worth a stop! If you want authentic down home southern food this place is the real deal. I had brisket, mashed potatoes, and collard greens. The brisket was a little dry, but flavorful. My husband's pot roast was amazing. The kids all ate their fried chicken more quickly than I could blink. The entire staff was courteous and kind. 10/10 all the way. The food there is extraordinarily good and i would definitely eat there again. Their AC was not working at the time, but they had fans around you and provided plenty of water. The staff (especially Ms. Sascee) were VERY kind and welcoming. For 14$ you get one meat, and THREE well portioned sides. The time I was there i got the fried chicken, glazed carrots, fried cabbage, and butter beans. The chicken was crispy and seasoned to perfection! The carrots are what got me though. They were SUPER tender and very good. While the butter beans are delicious, I don't think i would be getting them next time. The fried cabbage was cooked to perfection. They bring you two different kinds of hot sauces and both were very good. They also bring you cornbread and biscuits. I would definitely eat there again. The best southern cooking I've had in ages. Their fried chicken is what all fried chicken wishes it could be!!! Portions are large. You order a 1, 2 or 3 meat plate with three sides. When we were there the sides were mashed potatoes (covered in butter, yum), sweet potatoes, collard greens, black eyed peas, corn bread stuffing, cabbage, cheesey broccoli & rice and they bring a basket of cornbread to your table. The meats were ribs, ox tail, meatloaf, baked chicken and FRIED CHICKEN. We didn't have desert, but I heard someone say cobbler and don't know what else they offered. The staff were very friendly and service was good. You can eat in or take out. It seemed like a popular place to get take-out after church. This is a very well hidden treasure we found by accident on our way home after Thanksgiving holiday. We will definitely make sure to drive back this way just so we can eat here again. read more

Went for lunch last Saturday. Times posted were incorrect on door and in Waco Today. Came back at noon and still had to wait until 12:05 for doors to open. Menu confusing, waitress could not answer questions, had to wait for unsweetened tea to be made. Food did not arrive until 40 minutes after my order was placed. Nothing special. Paid with cash and they couldn't make change without owner taking money from purse. Will not go back. read more

We tried Sascee's tonight and it was a treat! The fried catfish was tender and not over cooked, the smothered pork chop was moist and very delicious. My wife does not eat macaroni and cheese, but cleaned the plate, the grits had a great crispy top, and I could make a full meal on the collards and butter beans, and the cornbread was the best we've had in two years living in Waco! First time visiting Sascee's and I can say I was very pleased. I've eaten at other soul food restaurants before, so I didn't expect much in the way of atmosphere but I did expect good service and that is what we had! It wasn't polished or very professional-just down home pleasant. The food was delicious! I had pot roast with potatoes/carrots (got at least half pound of meat), pinto beans( like my grandma's), cream corn (delicious) and cornbread(very good)! I also had unsweetened tea WITH Sweet and Low and it was one of the best teas I've had! My companion had the baked chicken with cabbage, broccoli and rice casserole and creamed corn. All, he said was very good! My only complaint about this establishment are the hours they are open: they open at 1pm in Sundays, which is late for the after church crowd. I may not frequent Sascee's as much due to this. Otherwise, it was a pleasant experience and I will try to go back, and I definitely will recommend it to others! read more

I've tried a few different southern places living in Texas the last couple of years. This is the first place that I really enjoyed. Driving in, the neighborhood feels a bit sketchy, but once you enter the restaurant, everything is very classy. All of the employees that we interacted with were incredibly nice. The tables and chairs are all made up to look very formal. The food is kind of buffet style, but not all you can eat. The food looks very southern (presentation isn't necessarily first and foremost as far as the food goes), but the flavor was amazing. My wife and I both got the smothered pork chops and it was one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted. I also really enjoyed the fried cabbage and the corn bread. Service is incredibly fast, I think that we were in and out on about 15 minutes. Overall, this is the best southern food I've ever had, and I'll definitely be back anytime I get down to Waco. read more

Average at best. Food was ok, nothing special. Restaurant was clean and nicely appointed. There was a sign at entrance saying "seat yourself". I found my seat and sat for what I thought was a long time and I finally got up to go ask someone from the staff if I could get service. I was told by a lady behind a small steam table that they were similar to Luby's, you choose what you wanted and would be served at the steam table. There were about 8 vegetables to choose from and 3 meat selections. I chose 1 meat and 2 vegetables. I got what I considered enough food, went back to my table still expecting a server to take my drink order. Finally a server came to me with a peice of cornbread that looked dried out. No butter or margarine, just a peice of cornbread and I am still waiting on a beverage. Finally the server comes to ask what I wanted to drink. I ordered sweet tea but when the tea arrived it was terrible. It tasted like instant lemon tea. When she brought my tea I asked if I could have some butter for the cornbread and the server was gone so long that I actually finished my meal. Finally the server brought me some butter and some cornbread fresh out of the oven so she said. That not the case. The cornbread was cold and so dry the butter made the cornbread just crumble in my hand. The meal cost me nearly $11.00 without the tip. I guess the price was ok for the food but the service was not good. Most likely not going back. My suggestion for downtown dining is Jake's Tea Room on Austin Ave. read more

I have a general skepticism of downtown Waco start-up restaurants, but my friends have raved about the place for over a month so I decided to try it. I walked in and the staff was immediately welcoming, to the point that I now know three of them by name. The hospitality was only matched by the food and service. Tiffany was our server, and she was attentive and knowledgeable. I had the chicken friend steak, and this stood apart from all other chicken friend steaks I've had before. the meat was thick and flavorful, and the fry was crispy. First time at Sascee's. We work for a campground and often get asked what restaurants are good and not part of a chain. For southern cooking, this place is excellent and I will most definitely recommend it. I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans. My dish was one of the best I've had(I'm sort of a chicken fried steak enthusiast) and the mashed potatoes were buttery and creamy. My husband got the fried catfish- sooooo delicious. We never get dessert when we go out but had to try the peach cobbler- OH MY!!!!!!!!!! The service was good. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that there was a saxophonist playing good jazz. I like jazz and the musician was very good. However, it did make for difficult conversation. This was on a Saturday and I don't imagine there is music during the week. We will most assuredly be back to try some of the other dishes. read more

Three of us women stumbled upon Sascee's for lunch yesterday, sheerly by accident. Hit the jackpot!!! Terrific home cooking! Between us, we had everything on the buffet: fried chicken; pork neck bones; beef stroganoff; collard green; potatoes; pinto beans; cornbread; banana pudding; sweet potato pie; and peach cobbler. Absolutely everything was scrumptious!! We couldn't stop raving about the quality of the food! And Sascee, herself, was an absolute delight! Such a lovely, charming woman! She makes everything from scratch! That woman knows how to cook! The whole staff was very polite and accommodating! What a well kept secret!
