This place is goooood. We're just visiting the area and decided to stop for lunch. You really can't go wrong. We ordered the wings for an appetizer. Half hot/ half oven roasted. The wings took a long time to come out because they oven roast to order - so expect this and ask for cornbread if your really hungry and can't wait (like me). Believe me the wings are worth it. We shared the smothered porkchops with Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. They were perfectly tender and so delicious. With the wings - sharing was the perfect size. We had banana pudding for dessert and I'm telling you.... A must. Im a sucker for banana pudding and I tried to eat it all before my husband could join in. So good! This may be my new favorite Waco local eatery. Sascee's (say it like sassy's) just opened up last week on Valentine's day. They serve an awesome menu of homestyle southern food. I visited the restaurant the first time in the afternoon today just to check out the menu. The owner was a beautiful kind lady who greeted me with some amazing southern hospitality. "Why don't you have a seat and I'll bring you some iced tea?" She was a total dear and definitely had some sass too! Even though I had just had lunch I couldn't resist trying the collard greens- served up with a side of cornbread. They were hands down the best I have ever had. Ever. I can't wait to go back and try out the rest of the menu items. This is definitely a place to take my family!! I had been tempted by the sign out front for several weeks. Sascee's is located in downtown Waco just south of Spice Market on Franklin Ave. Only 4 blocks south of the Brazos River and about a mile or so from the Baylor campus! So a super good location- especially with the recent restoration happening in the downtown area of Waco. The good home-style southern food should appeal to local foodies and down home southerners alike. Look for the music note sign out front. The owner got into the business just by cooking up some awesome food! Her friends loved her food and encouraged her to feed them on regular occasions. From there she worked once a month as a caterer, then 2x a month, then every weekend! Since business was booming she wanted a bigger kitchen and found this awesome location on Franklin... opening a restaurant seemed like the next step from there! And boy am I glad that this restaurant has opened. I haven't eaten homestyle southern food this good in a very long time! Waco has a new gem. Lunch is served buffet style. Sit-down for supper. If my goodness!!!! This is absolutely FABULOUS!!! You just can't find anything better than this!!! The short ribs with gravy (country style ribs, I think) are fabulous! Oh, the gravy... Oh the ribs just melt in your mouth. My husband got the chills after taking his first bite. The yellow squash ... Oh, so sweet, they just melt in your mouth. The potatoes ... both types of chicken... The cornbread is like eating cake - supper moist and fluffy. Our waitress, Jaylen was so attentive and was right there to take care of us. Super polite! The chef - there are just not words to describe him. We would weigh 600 lbs if we lived anywhere near here. If you pass this place up, you are crazy!!! read more

Like other reviewers, we came here on a whim because they were open on a Sunday afternoon and Yelp reviews so highly recommended it. We were warmly greeted when we walked in, as if we were guests in their home. We were told to choose one meat and 2 sides. They try to have beef, chicken, and pork items available every day. Between the 4 of us, we tried Fried Chicken, Pork Chops, Stuffed Pepper, Macaroni & Cheese, Cornbread dressing, Boiled Cabbage, Stewed Okra, Black Eyed Peas, and Peach Cobbler. Nothing was fancy, but everything was authentic. This is the food I grew up on. The mac & cheese was the best I have had in a long time, and the cornbread dressing was another standout. One important piece of information to know is that nothing here is low calorie, low carb or conducive to a trim waistline. As most of the sides had a little meat in them (bacon makes everything better), it probably has little to no options for vegetarians. It's definitely a deliciously satisfying indulgence, and one we will revisit. read more

I've been here three times and I tend to leave slightly dissatisfied. Pros: The chicken entrees are usually pretty flavorful, as is the mac and cheese, and the desserts are top notch (I've had the banana pudding and peach cobbler). There's free cornbread on the table, which tastes like your average cornbread. Cons: The hamburger steak is rife with onions. The mashed potatoes weren't anything special either. My first visit, the employees were unabashedly restocking the salad tray with an HEB bag of lettuce mix. The employees here are wonderful, and I know of plenty of people who enjoy Sascees. We stopped in on a Sunday afternoon & were happy to wait a few minutes for fried chicken to hit the buffet. The available food options changed a couple times during our visit. We had some of the best darn pork chops I've ever had, & the fried chicken was fantastic. All of the sides we tried were pretty much the best version of that dish possible. Spectacular flavors! Was so excited to try this place because of the reviews and pictures... they were pretty much "out of" everything, including fried chicken (even though there was a basket of it behind the line; and there was "no gravy" even though there was a ladle and bowl of it that I could see. Mehhhh, I've had better & I'm not sure I'll be back. The fried chicken was average, the meatloaf could have been more flavorful but the Mac & cheese was good. The collard greens were decent as well. Outstanding food, real authentic southern home cooking like mother and grandmother's! We traveled an hour to try the food and it was well worth the trip. It was our first time so we ordered many items on the menu and the meat (beef, pork, chicken) was tender and seasoned just right; and vegetables cooked to perfection. The food is only average, I have been to several soul food restaurants and I have had better. It's buffet style, however there is a server whom will give you your food. There is a 2 meat plate with 3 sides or a 3 meat plate with 3 sides. I got the fried chicken, baked chicken, sweet potatoes, cabbage and dressing. The sweet potatoes were really good as well as the cabbage. But everything else was just ok. It was lacking flavor. The way the food looks, it was as if it was bursting with flavor so it was disappointing that it wasn't. There is cornbread that is placed on the table and 1 bit and I couldn't finish it, it did not taste like cornbread it was more meal and some other flavor not good at all. I didn't even finish all my food. I was definitely expecting more for the price I paid. It's pretty pricey. The staff was nice and checkout was easy. I have been to Sascee's four times. I had the buffet once and the other times I ordered an entree. The food is good, however I feel that its over priced. If you get an entree with dessert and a drink and a tip of at least 15% plan on spending at least $20 per person. Today (12-19-15) I had the chicken fried steak with 2 sides, black eyed peas (a bit salty) and cabbage with dinner rolls. I do understand a business needs to earn a profit and I'm not cheap but when you compare that the fact that I could get this same meal (just as good) at other places around town for about half the price why go here? So a family of four eating here on a Sunday after church would easily drop a $100? How often can or would most families do that? It just doesn't make good economical sense. Plus we're also talking about home cooing (soul food) and we all know how unhealthy most of this food is. We loved this southern, home-style eatery! The owners were so warm and welcoming and their authentic southern soul food definitely hit the spot! I loved the fried catfish, smoked sausage, collard greens, and beans. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the ribs and chicken. We decided to go with the homemade butter pound cake for dessert (and we were not disappointed!). Would love to try the famous banana pudding next time. The mac and cheese was delicious. The squash, sautéed with John's signature lemon pepper seasoning, was outstanding. We finished with peach cobbler, which was delicious. We also had a chance to speak with both John and Marcia (Sascee). who are both wonderful and friendly. The waitstaff follow their example are equally charming.
