It looked cool, so I told my parents we'll go on our way back home to Toronto from Quebec City. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, and I'll admit the waiting area isn't the best. When we finally got our table, it was tucked in the corner of the restaurant by the windows. Thankfully it was insulated well despite a cold night. The food concept is pretty unique here, as Southeast Asian cuisine isn't too common overall. We decided to share a bunch of dishes to increase the variety of foods. Pork Belly Steamed Buns - Excellent Laksa Soup with Chicken - Excellent, and I like how they separated the satay on a spoon. Satay Babi - This was an item from their special menu, which is basically satay pork skewers. It was also very good. Fried chicken - Nothing special, could probably skip this. Char kway teow - Very uniquely done. I wasn't expecting clams on it, and it was an excellent addition. Service was also amazing. This was our first dinner in Montreal, and when we showed up there were already quite a few people waiting outside. The place feels more like a bar than a restaurant, with dark lighting, red lanterns, and neon signs giving it a cool vibe. We spoke with (maybe) the owner's son and got seated at the bar after about 10-15 minutes. The bartender was friendly, even though he was nonstop making cocktails and juggling a packed bar. We ordered two of my favorites: laksa and char kway teow. Having lived in Singapore for a couple of years, I was excited to try them. The food came out quickly--less than 10 minutes. The laksa was flavorful with a nice hot broth, but the portion was really small for the price. Wish there was more noodles! The char kway teow was even more surprising: very small portion, and it came with two clams, which I've never seen in all my time in Malaysia or Singapore. At $20, it just didn't feel worth it. Overall, the vibe is fun and the atmosphere is great, but the portion sizes are way too small for what you pay. I'd say they need to be at least 30% bigger to match the price point. For that reason, I wouldn't go back, but I can see why people come here more for the drinks and ambiance. My husband had to get a kebab afterwards as he was still hungry. From the line to the decorations, this place is busy but still worth it. We tried to make a reservation but they didnt answer the few times we called and we found out why when we got there. It was packed with people waiting in groups outside and at the bar next door. About 30m later we got a bar spot and just got the papaya salad since there were not any vegiterian options that caught our eye. I was hoping they would have vegiterian kao soi or phad thai but they are not that type of thai place. The papaya salad was pretty good. Maranated in a lime juice and mixed with an assortment of peppers, nuts, etc it had great contrast in flavors and textures. Overall a good thai place. read more

We had the canvas club's painting event at Satay Brothers. It is a vibrant and colorful place. The decorations mixed of retro and slightly gothic. The food made me and my partner ill on what should have been a birthday and graduation celebration, and when I complained I was patronised, gaslit and blamed by the manager Alex. I would attach images of what came out of me as I walked along Notre-Dame as well as when I came home but I'm not sure if anyone wants to see that although to be fair, it didn't look dissimilar to the beef randeng slop that was thrown up to me. Last night we had dinner with friends at Satay Brothers. It's marketed as Singaporean street food, so that was very appealing and enticing, since I loved the street food in Singapore. We got there right at 6pm and luckily there was no wait....it got really busy later on, with many people waiting outside for a long while... The decor is very much Asian/Chinese with funky empty Satay beer cans straddling the dining room as part of the decor. Satay Brothers is a comfortable, lively place where you dine on food that will transport you far away from the Quebec state of mind. As the Satay Brothers say themselves, this is Singaporean Street Food, with a delightful mixture of very tasty Malaysian and southeast Asian flavors. This restaurant opened in 2015 with 80 seats, a nice improvement over their first restaurant that was small and where people waited long time for a table. Now on to the food...the menu is small with lots of pictures and descriptions... We got a bunch of things to share (see the pictures attached). All of them were good, a bit salty for my taste buds, but not bad. I felt the prices are a bit high ($7.50 for ONE pork steam bun, $9.50 for a satay skewer that had 3 little cubes of meat...)...but the ambiance was lively and with lots of energy. This place is rather divey & plays music like it's a bar. Certainly there isn't the normal Asian restaurant atmosphere. Sambal fish was really good - albeit not really sambal fish. There was a lot of nice fat on the nicely seasoned fish & a good char. The sauce good, while good, was not really sambal but instead sambal cut with some other stuff. It was still good. The satay (grilled meat skewers) was good, with a good char & good meat (ironic, since satay in Singapore usually uses poor quality meat). The spice mix used for the meat was somewhat off but still decent. The peanut sauce was close to authentic. The char kway teow (fried noodles) featured huge clams (to replace the usual blood clams) but had so smokey wok flavour. The sweet sauce was too heavy handed. It was pretty spicy. The fried rice roll was ok. It was crispy but not very flavourful & the spice mix was weird. It was served with a vinegar dip & daikon shreds, both of which were odd choices. The daily vegetable was kailan (Chinese broccoli) with garlic. There was no smoky wok flavour. The shrimp bun was ok but it was strong on the herbs. The kueh salat (kaya cake) was so so. Fun, loud & chill vibes, Satay Bros is a staple in St-Henri. Whenever I'm craving those delicious BBQ bao buns, a good laksa soup or some satay skewers, this is the spot. I also like their papaya salad and spicy cucumber that's served with the skewers. It's first come, first served so get there early! You can reserve, but even then, everyone has to be there together to be seated or others will go in front of you. They also have good drinks like bourbon lemonade. I was disappointed that they did not have roti chanai on the menu, but they did have the greatest hits of malay dishes. Food was good, but the mee goreng and char kuay teow noodle dishes tasted diff from what I had when I visited Malaysia and Singapore and having been to other joints in NYC. So, maybe there are a wide range of interpretations of a dish? I read some people complaining about portion sizes, but as far as I am concerned, if you ordered a noodle dish, it is enough food. These days people want too much food so that you end up taking ish home or over eating, you choose! The waiter did describe the dishes as meant to be shared and appetizer size. The satay sandwich is light on the meat and heavy in the peanut sauce, like, way too much, and pickled cabbage. You will prob be hungry if you pick that as a main. Ask about their tasting menu option if you want to sample multiple items on the menu. We were a party of five, three adults and two kids, and the price point of $50 per adult and $25 per kid did not make sense to us. read more

Who doesn't love flavourful food with a fun party atmosphere! Came for dinner with some girlfriends and had a super fun evening. All the food we got was delicious- the bao buns were so pillowy soft I wanted to sleep in them!! At some point a DJ arrived and it turned into quite a party with lots of old school hip hop favourites and a pretty big crowd! So probably not the spot for a quiet dinner out but it's also probably not like that the rest of the week (we came on a Thursday). I loved all the cool Asian inspired decor too! Amazing food in a fun rowdy atmosphere that transports you to a street festival vibe, especially on the weekends! There is usually a wait out the door, but it is well worth the effort or making reservations ahead of time. We ordered about half the menu because everything looked amazing. Table favorites included the pork belly bao, otak otak, satay skewers and the meegoreng. The meegoreng was one of the best that I've had, and my partner (who is Singaporean) agreed. It had a good kick and the flavors were on point. I had my first otak otak here, and it is such a hard to find dish!! Absolutely loved the flavors of ginger and lemongrass. It had a super tangy dressing with nuts on the side which was just perfect. It might seem like a small portion, but it's very packed and quite filling. We also ordered veggie noodles. Loveddddd all the veggies with nice noodles. This too was a generous portion. It was a spicy and flavorful fish. It went so well with the salad. My friend and I honestly enjoyed every bite and finished everything. Presentation for both plates were beautiful. Service was great, as the staff constantly checked up on us. The resto is quite large with many seating options. We were sharing a table with another group but it did not bother either parties. The decor can be overwhelming but its so different you seriously can't stop looking at the walls. You could easily pass it as there are no big signs except for 2 red shutter styled doors. We went for the tasting menu as a table of 7, which included 3 friends visiting from Bali who were looking for a taste of home. We got way more than we bargained for, the dishes kept coming and coming and we were stuffed by the end (I'm glad there was no dessert :D) Everyone had a different favourite dish, but mine was the pork buns and the papaya salad. Satay Brothers is a South East Asian restaurant, located in the St. Henri neighborhood of Montreal, Quebec. The soup is one of their core menu items, so it was definitely worth a try. It was very smooth, flavourful and heartwarming, which makes it perfect for the winter months. There's a 0-3 spiciness level available, so make sure you specify it if you'd like a bit more of a kick, or just want to settle for a bit of warmth. I went with the level of 0, and it was very mild... So if you can't handle spicy food, this is the perfect option for you. The main ingredients are separated from the broth, so the soup can be heated up separately if you decide to have it at a later time and to prevent the rest of the ingredients from becoming a mush. Pleasantly surprised. Interesting flavors I've never had before. The fried chicken with honey-like coating and the pork steam bums were favorites on the table. Also the peanut sauce was great and went with everything. Note that if you're 6+ people, you get the shared-menu, which is a set of maybe 7 or so dishes that you share with the table. It's more than enough to fill you up. My only complaint is that the shared-menu doesn't include a dessert at the end, which is a little disappointing. Very affordable prices. 45$ for the shared-menu and you get to taste most of the menu and it's filling. While that is a matter of taste, paying 23$ for two bao, and full price for 1/3 of a bowl of laksa is a bit of a joke. I bookmarked this place for dinner during our Montreal trip. My wife and I were really disappointed in the price, taste and portion ratio. We did do our research and noticed how small the portions were. The ribs entrée for $13 should really be an appetizer and lacked flavor . We ordered a lot food and had to wait for 2 of 5 items to come out. We were totally fatties. We shared a large table with 2 other couples. The first couple who sat down after we were seated finished and paid and we were waiting for our entrees. The second couple paid and finished their meal after we asked for our check. I'm glad I tried but I would search for a more authentic place for south Asian instead of this hipster place. The decor and atmosphere was cool but that never gets me full. My friend recommended the Beehoon, the vegetarian noodle dish and it was one of the best I've had! I couldn't beleive the complexity of flavor and perfect spiciness - so surprising for a veggie dish. The soup on the side is a little bit salty and has lamb flavor ( I assumed it was lamb soup) and I don't personally really like it. For the laksa, it has rich coconut flavor and a little bit spicy. That's all the flavor it has.. kinda disappointed because this is the most recommended dish. The chicken skewers with the sauce are great! Really love it. It's tender and juicy. Satay Brothers welcomes it patrons with a warm ambiance and Asian inspired decor. Though I can't say much about the accuracy of Singaporean decor, I can definitely say that there is a lot to look at! With communal seating and bar seating, Satay Brothers is the perfect picture of a trendy Asian eatery. We ordered three of their well known dishes: the laksa, the miegoreng and the papaya salad. The laksa was one of my favorites, I particularly liked the coconut flavors and the variety of vegetables. The miegoreng was the weaker dish of the three, I would have liked some stronger spices and seasoning. Finally the papaya salad was a nice acidic lemony touch to the whole meal! We also ordered two drinks: the Ippon ginger beer and their cassonade lemonade which were both delicious! Satay Brothers is located on Notre Dame street with plenty of parking and local eateries around it. Great vibe, dark lit, oriental style restaurant and bar. It gets rough so be prepared to sit very close and yell. It fills up fast so I recommend getting there for 6:30/7 if you want to have dinner. Most seating options are sharing tables or at the kitchen bar. The food was amazing. We ordered tofu and pork steamed buns, the green papaya salad, kolo mee and meegoreng. The staff are really nice. We did have an issue with the kolo mee getting lost in delivery and had to wait about 30 minutes for it. We had asked the server about it 10 mins after we got the first one and he said it just takes longer to make (didn't check with the kitchen for it). Then eventually he came to check if we wanted dessert and was shocked when we said we still hadn't gotten our entree. The kolo mee was great in the end, and we got a free dessert with it. Satay Brothers has some of the best Singaporean food my girlfriend and I have tried outside of Singapore -- and, since we're always on the lookout for food from her home country, we've tried quite a lot. While not everything on the menu is strictly Singaporean -- neither of us had ever seen or heard of a 'satay sandwich' in Singapore -- the westernizing influence was generally subtle, and the menu sports a wide array of truly authentic Singaporean dishes like Laksa, Mee Goreng, Char Kway Teow, Otak Otak, and Rendang. We went with the staples, ordering Laksa, Chicken Satay, Mee Goreng, and Char Kway Teow. The Laksa -- a sweet and spicy coconut soup with prawns, beansprouts, and an egg that's almost impossible to find outside of Singapore -- was the star of the meal. The soup was rich and flavorful, with noodles cooked to perfection, and tasted almost as good as the soups back home. The satays were also excellent -- the meat was tender and excellently seasoned, and arrived at the table piping hot from the grill and accompanied by a tangy peanut sauce and pieces of fresh cucumber. The Mee Goreng and Char Kway Teow, while still tasty, were the weaker dishes of the meal. Satay Brothers added squid into the Mee Goreng -- a spicy Malay fried noodle dish -- that, while perhaps not a bad idea in theory, in execution gave the dish a fishy quality that masked and undermined the more subtle traditional flavors. The Char Kway Teow -- a sweeter noodle dish that's stir fried with light and dark sweet soy sauce alongside chili, sausage, and egg -- was missing the signature yellow egg noodles and a beat off from what we expected in taste.
