They have also perfected their Penang Prawn Mee with hard boiled egg. Tonight we hang with a vegan couple and a vegetarian couple. They shared the reason they eat here is because most every dish can be prepared for them. The service is very efficient. Not much for conversation, but they really take care of you. A big crispy pancake with curry chicken and mashed potato sauce. Delicious and suitable for trying new things. Bak Kut Teh. The soup made from pork ribs, hazel mushrooms and beancurd skin is rich in the mouth and has a slightly sweet aftertaste. It is recommended to order a small bowl because it is a bit greasy if you drink too much. Main course Malay fried rice noodles/kway teow - I have eaten both. The taste is similar. It is a stir-fried pot method. Shrimp, squid and eggs are added. It is a little spicy but very fragrant. The amount for dine-in is a little small. Hainanese chicken rice is highly recommended!!! The chicken is super tender, it falls off the bone with one bite and is not greasy at all. There is a small dish of minced ginger on the side. The taste is top-notch. Pineapple beef rice is more like Thai style. It is added with sour and sweet pineapple sauce. But I personally feel that pineapple and beef don't go together. It feels like a formal marriage. We stopped in for a quick lunch on Saturday at noon. The restaurant was completely empty at this time and only 2 more parties showed up before we finished. We got the following: Roti Canai - I'm pretty sure this was a pan fried frozen roti. It did not have the glass-like crisp of a freshly made roti; it was kind of sad and floppy. The curry it came with had a good concentrated curry flavor. It had an extremely undercooked piece of potato inside and a small piece of chicken. Asam Laksa - The broth base for the Laksa has the correct tamarind sourness, sugar sweetness, chili spiciness, and a somewhat fishy savoriness, but it's missing a robustness or depth that comes with a broth that has been simmering for hours. The noodles were good though - perfectly cooked and bouncy laksa rice noodles. The toppings included bean sprouts, julienned cucumbers, sliced onions, halved fishballs, and some (canned?) fish. Curry Mee - Coconutty sweet, spicy and savory with a slight curry flavor, but once again, the broth was on the weak side. The egg noodles were overcooked. The toppings were good - you can't go wrong with bean sprouts, tofu skin and stuffed fried tofu. The service was basically non existent - we had to grab our own soup spoons and we never had our water refilled. There were two dead fruit flies on the table we sat at. I don't know if it's true, but to my taste buds, I feel Satay House mostly uses jarred or canned sauce/soup bases with canned and frozen toppings. If you've visited Malaysia or even just been to a Malaysian restaurant in a city with a higher Malaysian population, Satay House feels very average in comparison. This is the only Malaysian restaurant in Metro Detroit so I think they get a pass from a lot of people. Unfortunately, it's just not that great for me. read more

What a great place to try Singaporean/Malaysian food! Came with a group and we ordered a variety of dishes -- Hainanese chicken (of course), roti canai, Asam Laksa, Kang Kung Belacan, and Malaysian Fried Noodle. The Hainanese chicken was very yummy -- soft, flavorful with good sauces on the side. I have definitely had more "silky" textured Hainanese chicken outside of Detroit, but this definitely hits the spot. My favorite dish though was probably the Kang Kung Belacan as I am a huge fan of water spinach, and the savory shrimp paste makes it 1000x tastier. The roti Canai was pretty standard, with a pretty decent sized roti. The Malaysian Fried Noodle was pretty good - more mildly flavored and a good palate cleanser. We weren't the biggest fan of the laksa -- felt that it was a bit bitter in flavor and not like the sour/spicy laksa's we are used to. Overall though, we had a great meal and the pricing is very reasonable for the quality of food! read more

We eat at this restaurant before going to Kim Nhung store. Actually I wanted to try the food here long time ago. I crave satays, and don't have time to make it by myself. So, it is good to have an alternative. The satays are okay. The beef one is better, and the chicken satay is slightly undercooked. But the peanut sauce is excellent. It's like a fusion between Chinese food and Indian food - that's my take a least. This is the 2nd time I've been here since the pandemic started and it's pretty good stuff. Prices are very reasonable as well. I'd highly recommend the appetizer: roti canai. The flatbread is crispy on the outside but really fluffy and stretchy on the inside. It's a great combo of texture and flavor - mildly sweet. Dip that in the sauce/soup that it comes with (curry with a piece of chicken and potato) and omg - amazing! Other than that, the dishes were ok with some being better than others but I would say the appetizers and I would venture to say even deserts are the stars here. I was really excited to see a Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant around here since they tend to be quite rare around the US in comparison to more East Asian restaurants. I might be biased since I recently came back from Singapore, but the pricing of the food was a little odd at the satay being $8.50 while the chow keuh teow being $9.95. The satay was definitely overpriced in comparison to the chow keuh teow. I also got an iced milo to go with my food which was around $4. The satay did taste authentic, and the chow keuh teow was good, but unfortunately the iced milo I had was a little watered down. My friend got a vegetarian tofu "chicken" rice, and I was expecting the dish to be served with coconut rice like it usually is with nasi lemak, but it was just served with plain rice instead. We meet once every month for lunch with several of my former colleagues from General Motors. Using my Yelp-based powers, I try to select restaurants with a variety of cuisines that are highly rated and moderately priced. This time, Satay House caught my attention as another Yelper's Review of the Day. So it was our choice and four of us showed up. First of all, Satay House serves what I'll call regional dishes; Thai, Malaysian, Singaporean, but also Indian and other influences. While I normally like to have more focus (going to a Thai place for Thai food, an Indian place for Indian food, etc), at Satay House this regional cuisine approach works. We arrived Saturday at 11:30 am and it was not busy yet; it was when we left. We were quickly seated and served tea that was hot and flavorful; great for a cold and snowy day. Since there were so many pictures of it on Yelp, we had to order the Roti Canai Indian Appetizer, and our friends ordered the Malaysian Poh Piah steamed egg rolls. They were both excellent and well worth reordering in the future. For our main dishes, I selected Chicken Redang with Rice, a slow-cooked Curry Chicken in Coconut Milk; I really enjoyed this dish with chunks of tender chicken in a curry sauce. And I used the remaining sauce from the Roti Canai to finish my entree rice (a pro tip). My wife chose Hainanese Chicken with Rice. She said it was as good as she had imagined and the pieces that were on the bones were especially flavorful. The Hainanese Rice added subtle flavor and she is a big fan of the Grated Ginger Sauce that came with this dish. Our friends ordered a Curry Beef Noodle Soup (the name pretty well describes it) and Malaysian Fried Noodles that seemed to contain almost everything including pork, shrimp, egg, squid, bean sprouts...you get the picture. They thoroughly enjoyed their choices and we will definitely all be back! But wait! There's more...we actually had room for dessert! Well, we would have ordered the Coconut Pudding even if we were too full! I mean, how could you not order Coconut Pudding served in a real Coconut? In fact, we ordered two...that's how good and unique it was. In all the excitement, I forgot to take a before picture, but there are plenty of them already posted so just look at them. When I thought we were done, one of my friends said no, keep digging until I hit brown! So it's Coconut Pudding inside a Coconut Shell with a layer of additional Coconut Pudding around the inside that looked like a perfectly-smooth porcelain. Mmmmm!! read more

Thanks to re-reading Crazy Rich Asians, I was craving for Malaysian food during my visit. Surprisingly, Yelp led me to Satay House, which was conveniently located half a mile away from where I was staying. What are the chances of staying so close to a place that has Mayasian food on the menu?? Of course, I told my bf to meet me here during his lunch break so I can satisfy my food cravings. So what did we order? We started off with the roti canai, which is an Indian-inspired flatbread served with a side of curry dipping sauce. The flatbread to me was a cross of the textures of naan with sections of it having the flakiness of a croissant, which was amazing to savor especially when dipped in the curry. If I had it my way, I would have had my own to indulge in all to myself. Next came out a half order of Hainanese chicken. The rice itself was addicting, which was flavored with chicken broth. The chicken was tasty and came with two dipping sauces, sweet chili and what I thought was finely minced ginger and garlic. The half order was a bit generous for the two of us. Along with the chicken came the curry beef stewed noodle soup. I was surprised with how generous the soup was with the beef and noodles, which is a bit hard to tell with the broth covering it all. I enjoyed the flavors of the dish, as well as the chewiness of the noodles. This is definitely a soup that can be shared with 2-3 people. Sure enough, the food around this area is littered with Vietnamese and Chinese food that'll duke it out with the very best of them. First ever I saw a malay establishment join the food game. We ordered 3 dishes, one appetizer and a soup. Tomyum soup (Thai), Beef Rendang (Malay/indonesian), Mee Siam (Malay) and Chicken Satay (Malay/Indonesian) and last but not the least, their Singapore Noodles to try their chinese skills. The Malay and Thai dishes are truly their main expertise. Beef Rendang is hella flavorful, and the mee siam... man, if you like pad thai,, this is the Yin to the Yang, the Alpha to its Omega. The tomyum soup is super flava-flav!! Then the chicken Satay is astonishingly tender and their sauce is heavenly. The service is very good as well... There was only two of them taking care of their slammed dining space and they took great care of us. The water was iced and kept cold, the tea was nice and hot and they tended out tables as quickly as they could. TWO of them in a full dining space and they smashed it! I was quite happy with the food and the service but then I noticed that they charged me a $5 tip without even asking me. I'm a person who always leaves a tip regardless of the food and service varying between 10 to 20 percent but what they are doing there is unethical. When 2 people spend 35 bucks at a restaurant and you force a tip it's totally upsetting. This is like cheating people, because mostly people do not look at the bill. And when I pointed it out they say that people usually tip so you don't have to tip extra, it's 15% and we are not charging 20%. And they mentioned that people tip a dollar.
