If I could put no stars I would. This place is horrible! Given it 3 chances since the new owners, and each visit gets worse and worse. Throughout the entire meal we had to flag down our server several times because she kept walking right past us and she would tell us to hold on. And no it was not busy (us and another table). We thought about walking out but then our food finally came out. After we paid, as we were getting into our car, the owner ran after us demanding that we leave a bigger tip! A $50 check and I guess $7 for horrible service wasn't good enough for them. We would have put more if the experience was better. They were wrong to ask for more money. I will be checking my bank statement to make sure they didn't change the amount. The rolls are okay, very loses though and much more expensive then they used to be and not many pieces. read more

Been here a few times when they 1st opened and it wasn't bad at all (still miss Sho). About a year ago I came in with a friend and the lady working there laid into us for not finishing 3 pieces of a roll. She tried making us take it with us at least 5 or six times, talked about it to every employee there and eventually said something on the lines of how this times we can go but next time we will have to pay full price (on top of paying for AYCE) for a full roll if we didn't finish. I haven't come back since. Well, I felt like having sushi for lunch and decided to come to sato again, alone this time. Honestly, service was great, no wait times, everything came out quick, and the owner walked around mostly talking to customers or his friends not sure. However, most importantly their fish was disgusting... a couple pieces were dry tough and very chewy almost like a chunk of thick smoked dry aged salmon or something. I don't remember what types of fish they were, but whatever they were I figure I was given the undesirable end cuts off what I can only imagine was an old, old piece of fish they were trying to stretch that last mile to make a few extra dollars on. Nothing was fresh. Not a single piece of that fish could be called fresh. None of it had any melt in your mouth sensation. All of it had far too much "chew" to it, almost no fat content and little flavor. I don't know what's happened since my last time I was here till this visit, but it's horribly worse. It wasn't bad before by any means. It was a great budget spot. I've been eating sushi my whole life and I've been living in Costa Mesa for the last few years eating sushi all over the coast, I went to Japan last year and ate more sushi than I ever have before in a 10 day period. On top of that, 2 of my old roommates were from Japan, one from Tokyo the other from Osaka and one of them worked as a waitress at a high-end sushi restaurant. I know sushi and I know it well and I'll NEVER come back here again. I can't believe you'd serve that bull(pardons my language) to your customers. You absolutely disgraced the industry with what I was served last week. read more

Had a great time here yesterday for my brother's birthday. It wasn't busy and food came out fairly quick. Had multiple servers for large group. Only one server older lady didn't seem happy to serve a large group. Small place but sushi was good. read more

This place is ok. It's nothing to write home about but if you're in the mood for sushi... it's sushi. It must be family owned because there were a few children just kind of hanging around. The staff was very friendly though so that is always a good thing. I'm not sure if I would go back but it's worth a try if you're craving sushi at a reasonable price. read more

Had a "baked" scallop. The sushi was cold and most of my scallops were raw even when it was suppose to be baked. Very disappointed. Beef udon had very weird tasting meat. I am a sushi lover and I know good sushi. Not horrible but not the best. The employees were very friendly read more

Fish was really delicious especially the salmon! The owner named Tony montana was really nice too. I would definitely recommend sitting at the sushi bar ask any of sushi chef for special request. Good sushi but it is very inconsistent. You will never get the same roll twice because apparently they have 30 different sushi chefs so they all make everything a little differently, which I do not like. When I order something I have ordered before I expect that same exact thing, not a variation. I will only go here on an occasional Sunday when my normal sushi bar is closed to get a sushi fix. read more

I had a great experience at Sato Sushi on a Saturday afternoon! There was no wait and three of the four people in my party decided to do the all-you-can-eat. I love that they don't make everyone at the table do ayce. My mom got a bento box with a california roll and chicken teriyaki - portion was large and the food looked great. Three of us ordered salmon, yellowtail, scallop, shrimp, and halibut nigiri - all fresh and delicious. They didn't stack the nigiri with rice either which I really appreciated. We had several rolls... the philadelphia roll, the jessica, and the fire cracker with the fire cracker being a highlight. Again, really good amount of rice and fish in each roll. Their rice-less rolls were my favorite, especially the stuff tomato - the tuna, crab, and scallop all went perfectly together and wasn't too big to fit in your mouth in one bite. If anything, my only complaint was for the rock n roll beacuse it didn't come out as pictured; there were 8 huge pieces you had to contend with if you only wanted to try a bite. The non-sushi items we tried (miso soup, mussels, chicken teriyaki) were good as well. I left full and pretty impressed with everything we tried. I'd definitely come back! read more

Delicious sushi, well prepared and presented! Only took away one star because the seating was pretty worn and uncomfortable.

Terrific addition to the IE sushi scene. Fast friendly service, delicious fresh fish beautifully prepared. Highly recommended.
