I stopped by Koyi Sushi for Lent Friday and was seriously impressed. It was the perfect spot for a no-meat day their all-you-can-eat menu has such a great variety, and everything tasted fresh and flavorful. For the price, you really can't beat the value. The service was also on point attentive, friendly, and quick without feeling rushed. What I really liked is how lowkey and relaxed the spot feels. came in on a Tuesday around 7pm for AYCE sushi dinner. restaurant was empty. got seated quickly and explained the menu items. we picked the premium $48.95pp so we can try the sashimi plate. we also ordered sushi, rolls, appetizers. one chef, an asian, but not sure if he's japanese. the kitchen food and the sushi food came in good timings. all the fish tasted fresh for an AYCE restaurant. fish slices are good portion with good rice portion that's not too big to fill you up. baked green mussel was a little burned. chicken wings were juicy. beef teriyaki was a little dry. calamari tempura was chewy, not impressed. if I'm in the neighborhood I may stop by to try the premium menu again. read more

As a couple that's very used to sticking to one sushi place and finding nitpicks in any new ones, this restaurant blew us away. First off, the quality of the sushi is amazing for the price. And second, the price is incredible for the quality. For an AYCE sushi spot the quality of the nigiri is delicious with just the right ratio of rice to fish. The appetizers were also tasty and came out quickly. The staff is also so kind and helpful and attentive. Whenever we needed anything they were already bringing it to us or immediately around. Great food. I started with the seaweed salad, which was a small enough portion to not be overwhelmed. Then I had a spicy tuna hand roll, which had the perfect amount of seasoning on it and not too much rice. We then had some nigiri, including the salmon flush. Very good portions of fish compared to the amount of rice. Iris was our server. She was very attentive to our needs and extremely polite. She poured all of our drinks as is customery. Decided to try out Koyi cause I pass by it all the time and I'm always down to try new things. As far as the all you can eat experience, I would say it was pretty average. You get 3 rounds and you can select different tiers of AYCE. The service was very quick (but then again it wasn't super packed) and my waitress was doing an amazing job. She was the only one working the floor and she did awesome making sure everyone was being attended to. Koyi is a small space so it doesn't seat very much. If you're coming with a large party, I might try to call in advance to gauge out the environment. Now as far as the food is concerned, it met my expectations and while it didn't blow my mind, it hit the spot. I am always hunting for new sushi places to try, so when I heard sushi VIP was under new ownership with a new name of Koyi Sushi, I was very excited to try it! The sushi was delicious! The fish tasted very fresh and the fish to rice ratio was very good! I loved that they had specialty options like the blue fin tuna and giant scallops to try! We tried two of the no rice rolls which were both good but had a bit too much sauce for my liking. The same went for the fried avocado bites. Delicious, but a touch too saucy- but I have no doubt that if you requested less sauce that they would be happy to oblige. The service was good and the waiters were very polite. One thing to note is if you have sensitive ears like me, don't sit below one of the TVs since it can get a bit loud. The actual vibe of the restaurant was okay. Some of the lightbulbs were mismatched (white light vs warm light) and not much in terms of atmosphere. I also liked the fact that their menus had pictures of the rolls, but the pictures are so small they are very difficult to see. The menu itself did have quite a bit of variety. One thing to note is that you order the individual pieces, not the typical sets when it comes to nigiri. (If you order 1 salmon nigiri, you will get 1 individual nigiri). I liked this because it lets you order odd number. They do not allow half orders for the AYCE. Overall I really enjoyed Koyi Sushi much more than I did under its previous owners! Fantastic sushi spot and our new favorite! We've been getting tired of the high bill and low quality sushi we'd been getting at sushi Martini, so we're very happy to have found this spot. Sushi is of a good quality, with excellent rice - fish ratios. They have a wide selection on the menu, and the non-rice rolls are a nice inclusion. Only complaint is the heavy use of sauce, but I'm sure the chefs will be happy to adjust at your request. The chefs at the bar are very welcoming, and you can feel their appreciation/passion for their restaurant! Staff/servers less so, but +1 to the chefs. This place is really new and I love trying out new places! The girl working the front, I didn't get her name was really nice and really on point with checking on us. She explained the menu to us and kept checking back to make sure we had everything we needed. The dishes came out quick and the kitchen items were really hot and fresh. The fish to rice ratio is so good here. The rice is so small and I love when places do that because they aren't trying to fill you up with rice. Good place to try for ayce sushi! Lunch was $29.95, was a bit adamant based on reviews but after trying it for myself it was a nice time. Nigiri was good, the roll selections were nice - mango salmon was our favorite. They had some no rice rolls & appetizer options as well. Waiter checked up on us and refilled our water, place was nice and spacious. They do close at 3:30 and reopen 5 PM on the weekdays so make a note to come before 3 for ayce. I'm a little hesitant when it comes to AYCE anything because I feel like majority of the times, the quality is mid. Came here for a late lunch because I saw that it was new. There was only 2 parties inside when I got there, its pretty dark inside. Pretty plain interior, quite a few tables & sushi chef is off to the side. We visited Koi Sushi today. Upon arrival, we observed that the establishment was in its soft opening phase, and order fulfillment ceased at 8:30 PM. It is in the old sushi v. I. P building. We received notification that the grand opening is planned in one month and Operating hours will extend until 11:30 PM. We ordered a few items from the appetizer menu and if you rolls for our first round We received encouragement to increase our order due to the kitchen's impending closure within the hour. However, their all-you-can-eat policy stipulates a $2 per piece charge for any leftover sushi. Therefore, we exercised restraint in our order volume. We sampled their sashimi, traditional sushi, tempura, and baked selections. All items were freshly prepared and served promptly. We also found their hot tea to be quite palatable. Our server demonstrated extensive menu knowledge and maintained a professional and courteous demeanor. With our table and the ones around us. I would appreciate it if more servers provided the same level of service as she did. Ample parking is available despite the shopping center's high traffic volume. I tried many AYCE place and this one really surprised me. The place is tiny with less than 10 tables only one waiter. I am not complaining but this is normal for lunch. The surprise is the small portion of rice and the sashimi is pretty thick and good quality compared with other AYCE. Each nigiri comes only 1 pcs so I can try as many things as I want, this is amazing for small group. Also you need to try the tempora very light not oily and brown yellow . They should have a disclaimer about their menus. We went with a party of 20. Called ahead. Made a reservation. That phone call should have been when to relay what we were told once about to order. Half our party wanted ayce. The other, off the regular menu. They don't have combos or anything. It's either a la cart(currently 50% off or ayce. That's fine. Everyone was looking at their menus. Then the waitress comes in and says the whole party has to do one or the other. They were worried about sharing. We thought we heard wrong. The other waitress comes in and says the same. Then the manager came in and said the same. We were frustrated to say the that cause we all drove 30-45 minutes to go there. We almost got up and left. Eventually we were able to talk them into our party splitting. One side was ayce, the other a la cart. Fine we were ok with that. The two waitress had heavy accents so it was a little hard understanding them. But they were very nice and friendly. Got us what we asked for. Delivered with a smile. The good was ok. Their rolls were all pretty basic. Morning Nancy it intricate. Some fried rolls. Some fresh. Nigiri. Rice was small compared to the fish. Appetizers. Everything was fresh. The chicken wings were delicious. If I'd have put some sweet and sour on them? Mmm. We quickly forgot about the issue upon arrival and started enjoying our food. We were done eating. Asked for the check and the said wait, we have a cake for you. We told them when we made the reservation it was for a birthday. For a place that had no customers, the wait staff was very slow to service me. I went in alone on a Monday afternoon, 2:30pm. On the menu I pointed out that I wanted to come in for that happy hour price listed at $24.99. The lady tells me that the price has changed and now it's $29.99. Not sure why their menus haven't been updated, but that threw me off. Once I sat down, I took a look at their small menu. And was ready to order after 5-10 minutes of being sat down. Again, nobody else in the restaurant except me. The man at the sushi bar look at me and said hi and that's when the waitress came to ask me whether I was doing AYCE or not. As I informed her that I was doing AYCE even at their falsely advertised price, she let me know that all I had to do was mark down items on the menu, as if she had given me a pen to do so already. At this point, the wait time, the misled information, and the misinformed way to order all threw me away to not want to dine in. If you wish to come here, please know that their AYCE is $29.99 and might be a wait to be served even if there isn't anyone else in the restaurant. The food? I can't tell you whether or not if it's good. If the service isn't good, I'm more than happy to dine somewhere else. read more

We're big fans of AYCE sushi--especially my husband, who can definitely eat his share--and were excited to try out Koyi Sushi's new location in Montclair. We've heard great things about their OC spot, so we stopped by on opening day after seeing their soft opening announcement on social media. It was a little confusing at first. There was no working phone number, and even when we called the OC location, the staff there didn't know if Montclair was officially open. We decided to take a chance and went anyway. The storefront still had the old restaurant's sign and number, but once inside, we confirmed it was under new ownership. The sushi was fresh and good for the price--though unfortunately, they were out of jumbo scallops that day. Kitchen items were just okay; a bit oily and overcooked for our taste. The biggest downside was the cleanliness. The floor looked stained and dirty, and the tables felt greasy. The whole space could really use a deep clean, especially for a brand-new opening. Overall, it was an okay AYCE sushi experience. My husband had no issues, but I ended up with a stomachache and diarrhea later that night--not sure if it was related, but worth mentioning. There was 1 server and 1 chef so the food took a long time to come out. They had 2 options for AYCE, but some of the basic items would be on option 2, such as baked mussels... and that costed almost $40 pp. the sushi rice was too dry, no sweetness to it and too much in each sushi roll. Restaurant is under new ownership I believe and it's good but does need some serious improvements. Their servers are awful, the have a woman here, not sure if they still do, because she has absolutely no common sense when it comes to serving at all. She kept asking me if I wanted all u can eat and I kept saying no, the table next to me has all u can eat and she kept saying she would have ordered more or wouldn't have gotten what they were eating and that she could eat more than them. She had lots of attitude when anyone asked her a question and would look very bothered when ordering to go. She ignored her tables completely as she stood in the center of them room watching the tv for a full almost 10mins. One table was literally yelling for her and I saw her turn her eyes but switch back to the tv and continued to ignore them. Last time I was there she moved a couple to a dirty table after they tried sitting at a clean one, then she came to get my order but stopped half way thru and went to go clean the dirty table and give menus to the couple she just moved. After that I was like ok this lady has no business working in the restaurant business. Fish quality is good. Better than grocery stores. Price is right as well. Rice is almost always old tho.
