We were driving by and hungry and this seemed like the only non-chain option so we gave it a try without checking Yelp. They had a good crowd for a week night so we were enthused. The staff was friendly and the place was clean. They have an extensive menu with all sorts of noodle dishes, appetizers, and a variety of other plate meals as options if you're not in the mood for sushi. We're a fan of sushi rolls so we ordered a few along with a sashimi bowl. At a new place I always order the roll named after the restaurant thinking of it as some sort of signature dish, but I didn't find one here with Kuma in the name, odd. The fish was fresh but the rolls lacked creativity and originality of flavor or composition. The sashimi bowl was a bit odd with a base of imitation crab strings and what appeared to be left over chunks of ahi and some sweet shrimp, which was quite tasty. The menu described it as having a mayonnaise sauce but I think it was straight mayo, but not a lot of it, which was fine. We probably won't be back as we were just driving through, but if we do go back, I'd give them another chance with some of their other menu items with some nigiri or sashimi pieces. read more

Tried this place on a whim. Pretty mediocre spot, if I'm going to be honest. Sushi quality is not great. The cuts were poor and the fish was dull. We ordered two "rolls" at $20 a roll, they were very very small bite size pieces. Not worth the price but the overall flavor was fine. The katsu don was the worst item. Incredibly soggy breading and meat, the main taste being salt. We are usually not picky but we couldn't even take more than a few bites without being disgusted by it. We were waited on very promptly! That's always a good indication it's gonna be a good experience. Then we ordered our drinks, wine and beer and it was also very prompt! We ordered two combination plates. The tempera shrimp and vegetable is so good and they give you so many pieces I would add a little bit more teriyaki sauce to my chicken but other than that everything was absolutely delicious. The last time I was here I thought it was a little pricey but I was pleasantly surprised when I got there that their prices remained relatively at par with most of the restaurants around. This is a place where you can get other Japanese dishes that you might not find in most places. We ordered the sukiyaki, chawanmushi, soba noodles, and gindara. The sukiyaki had great flavor although the beef was a little tough. The soba noodles is always filling and a great value. I like how much seafood they had in the Chawanmushi (must try if you haven't had it yet) and the gindara was melt in your mouth. Service was pretty fast after we got seated. I have wanted to say something the last 3 times I ate here. Been going to Kuma since they opened and now they really need to rethink their business plan. A complete overhaul of the kitchen and menu is badly needed. Absolutely no authenticity. Rolls are absolutely average. Sushi quality is average and What used to be a signature roll, "Fireboat" has completely changed and tastes awful! I took 1 bite and ask chef if something changed and he no. I set the entire roll on top of the bar and never touched it after that. Paid full price. Thank you very much. I will not got back unless they change drastically and I'll be shocked if they make it another year or 2. Thomas has always been good to us, but I won't eat average sushi. My friend and I shared the following: -albacore sashimi -salmon skin roll ($6.00) -a specialty roll -tempura soba ($13.50) We ordered a specialty roll - a spicy tuna roll topped with seared albacore with Cajun seasoning. Well my friends, I did not love the Cajun twist. It does not go hand in hand with sushi. My bad for not recognizing this sooner. What I found the most offsetting about the rolls was the inclusion of pickled carrots - the kind you find in kimpab. My husband & I have been coming here for many years. Per their current website, it stated they were open. We thought, great, they're not stupid anymore by closing a few hrs during the afternoon anymore. So, yesterday at 4:45 we went in ( door was unlocked) and a rude Asian women sweeping said " we open 5!". I said that's not what your website states and maybe lock the door if you're not open til 5. I looked around and noticed everyone had their dinner served except us. When we finally obtained our dinner it was disgusting without any favor. We had to pour extra soy sauce in order for it to have some taste. Also, we were not done eating when they gave us the check. They checked us out prior to finishing our dinner. They offer a nice variety of non traditional sushi, as well as the traditional Japanese entrees. Great Sushi for good price, we were enjoying adult beverages (which are also reasonably priced). This is our third visit! Each time we have ordered the Omakase at the sushi bar. We have had the best service, even though there was about 50 phone and online orders in-bound, our food came out quickly and piping hot. During our last two visits, It was amazing to see the sushi chef TJ and Scott pumping out rolls, sashimi, and various platters in such rapid motion. With a restricted diet (no rice), my husband is glad that they cared about my health to adjust my order. I also really love that TJ and Scott remember that I only eat my fish with Tamari The only downside is the people picking up their orders and "B*tch*ng"/"complaining", talk about ruining the fun and friendly atmosphere. I felt so bad for the three servers. They kept running around trying to tend to the in-door customers and the people picking up. It was definitely Surprisingly busy for a Father's Day! I don't know if the owners realize it was going to be so busy. We were able to meet some locals who have been going to the restaurant for over 10 years. They gave some nice recommendations.
