My husband and I decided to try these guys out this past weekend. I work in the area, so I'm always on the lookout for a place that can become my newest "guilty pleasure". When we arrived, the place was empty. We weren't even sure that they were open until we saw the kitchen staff behind the line. Upon entering, I saw a kiosk where you can place your order, but a woman emerged from the back to take our orders. Being that we weren't familiar with the menu, I told her that the kiosk might be easier. She insisted that it wasn't, and as I went on, I realized the same. The kiosk states that there is a $1.25 charge for the sauce on the side, but she explained that it comes with one sauce free of charge and additional sauces cost extra. We placed our order with her: A small Italian salad to share, the Fatty B calzone with the spicy marinara sauce and the Hot Mother Clucker calzone with the chipotle garlic ranch. We ordered them with the suggested sauces but also order the regular marinara and the garlic sauces on the side. We were given glasses for water (self-serve from the soda fountain) and also ordered a bottled beer and canned cider. By the time we were done ordering, a line had formed. The store was understaffed, which was explained to us later, so we had to exercise patience. We didn't receive our beverages until after the calzones were delivered. Before that, we received our rather large, small salad. It was more than enough for two people. The woman had explained to us that it comes with 4 cups of lettuce plus the toppings. That information helped us make our decision to share. The space is large and we noticed cornhole boards to be used on the patio. Unfortunately, it was raining when we went, otherwise we would have played. The calzones were good and filling. Neither of us finished ours and had food to enjoy at home later that evening. The Hot Mother Clucker isn't very pizza-esque, but dipping it into marinara sort of brought it back into the fold. The suggested chipotle garlic ranch was a better pairing indeed. The salad bowl/plate is oddly shaped, which caused toppings to being spilling off the sides. When it was brought to our table, the woman tried saving the toppings by wedging them between the order slip and her fingers and dumping them back onto our plate. I stopped her. I wasn't trying to be rude, but I don't want to eat food that a stranger's hands have touched. I explained this to her. She tried to assure us that she washes her hands constantly throughout the day, but she'd just come over from the register without a handwashing break. Just let the toppings fall where they may! This was our first visit to Sauce on the Side. The franchise is out of St. Louis and specializes in calzones. The sweet aroma of marinara sauce fills the air. You order at the counter and pay. Food is brought out to your table when it is ready. They have about 16 calzones on menu and a special calzone of the month. The clerk walked us through the most popular calzones. They also have five salads on the menu. I had a small Italian Salad, which is huge and filled with marinated artichoke hearts, olives, roasted peppers, salami, cheese mixed in with chopped romaine lettuce. The salad is delicious and filling. My husband had the Meat Me in St. Louis Calzone, which is packed with different meats and cheeses. The calzone is beautiful with a golden brown crust. The calzone comes with a marinara sauce for dipping. The calzone is gooey, delicious and filling. The clerk brought extra plates so we could share (without us asking). She checked on us several times to make sure the food was perfect. She was a truly 5 star server. They serve beer and wine and have televisions set up for sports. The dining room has a mix of booths and tables. They offer cloth napkins! The room is a little on the dark side. There is also an outdoor patio with tables. We loved our lunch. While I really love a good calzone, I am not too sure about these. They do have quite a few options and even dessert calzones. I guess I am just used to less ricotta. My calzone was mostly ricotta unfortunately. But otherwise it was quite tasty. I love the variety of sauces you can get here. I ordered extra because I am a saucy chick. Plus I wanted to try more than one kind. However, all my guests were delighted and truly enjoyed their calzones. Solid food. Flavors were there. I felt like my ingredients were all hoarded together so I really couldn't bite and enjoy to its full potential. It would've benefitted from a knife and fork and a mix up which really defeats the purpose of a calzone. I had the Figgy Piggy which had great flavor but one bite would be FIG. Then ONION. Then MEAT. More harmony needed. My companion had the Meet Me in St Louie which is more traditional pizza flavors and seemed to meld better. Buffalo chicken bites were okay. This was a completely unexpected unplanned pleasantly, surprisingly delicious fast food place in the middle of Carmel! Came here randomly on a Saturday afternoon afternoon while exploring Carmel neighborhoods and open houses and got hungry and found this place. Decided to take it and try it on a whim and let me tell you this did not disappoint at all. I will say that we arrived, and there were a handful of patrons and a handful of others taking orders to go. They definitely could clean up the place a little bit more since it was empty. The two people helping the customers in the front were very quick and helpful as well as friendly to guide you and with recommendations on the menu. The food is made as you order so it does take a little while since we did dine in and sat and waited Well, let me tell you the pictures of the calzones do it no justice because as soon as you opened and sliced through it, there is meat everywhere filling everywhere just as the menu stated. Me and a couple of coworkers came here, I had always seen this place driving by and honestly didn't know exactly what it was so never stopped. I had no idea is is a place full of calzones. Like who would ever think that based on the name? I LOVE a good calzone! This place is great because they have pretty much every combination you can think of wrapped up into this lovely calzone and if they don't you can create your own which is nice. Typically when you go to place they may have a couple but they have like 15 or more. If you don't like Calzone, they have salad options which one of my coworkers got and it is a HUGE size. They have indoor and outdoor seating, we sat outside and the service was still good out there (sometimes it seems when you go places they forget about those sitting outside). This place is great. They have SO many options, everything is customizable, or you can build your own. The sauces are great too, each calzone has a specific one it's comes it, but again you can customize. Everything is made to order. The magic carpet ride is a mushroom lovers dream. The veggies were fresh and even the dough was good. Typically I don't eat crust on pizza, but the dough was so well seasoned on these calzones that I had to eat the end bits. The cock a doodle noodle: the macaroni overpowers the rest of the ingredients, but the mac and cheese is good so no harm done. The Duke was the best of the ones we tried. All the ingredients paired so well together and the sauce was the best out of them all. Next time I'd get a side of this ranch on its own, it's that good. Service was great as well, they were closing soon but had no problem giving me time to ask questions about the menu. Another customer came in while I was waiting, so even closer to closing, and his online order was sent to the wrong location. Multiple staff were quick to help him figure out what to do next. The space was clean and spacious, I can see this being a busy spot. They also have a bar! The only complaint I have is the knowledge of the menu by the gentleman helping me. This complaint isn't enough for them to lose a star since everything else was great. The menu is fairly big, and i wanted to be respectful of them closing, and asked which calzones are meat-less. He responded that they are all customizable (which is true), and then suggested I get the roasty toasty with no chicken. Although yes, that would be meatless, after another look at the menu I saw 2-3 options that would be vegetarian without any modifications. They even have an option with vegan cheese! Not sure if he was new, or having an off day, and he did give me a meatless suggestion, just not the best suggestion on the menu. Calzone go-to hot spot! My husband and I had been looking for a tasty calzone spot and found it! I called for carry-out and it took about 10-14 minutes. I ordered the Jalapeño cheddar bites with the strawberry chipotle jam. You Must order! Super soft, bite size and the sauce is perfect! I love jalapeños! We ordered the Meet Me in the St Louie and Carmen. We split them in half, so we could both try them. We both agreed we liked the meet me in the St Louie better over the 2. I had given them a 5star review in May 2020; I loved them for the fact they had every ingredient you could imagine, and every ingredient was always top shelf in taste and quality. However I moved twice in the past couple years and just now made a trip back to the area. They were one of 2 places I had to go to while I was back. Sadly, at Sauce on the Side it was at best a mediocre encounter. My Fatty B was so dripping with grease, the 3 or 4 capers they gave me weren't fresh or tasty and I could scarefly tell that the sausage was sausage. Sauce on the Side closes at 9pm and has a smooth online ordering system so that was the obvious choice. For as many times as I've been to Carmel for work, I haven't been able to stop by here but have heard amazing things. I created my own calzone (despite hearing their salads are amazing) and practiced patience. I always get the Meat Me in St. Louie (Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, PROVEL® Cheese, Mascarpone-Ricotta Blend, Garlic Oil + I typically add sliced jalapeños for heat). This time I thought I'd pick up some of the Buffalo Chicken bites. I was happy to find there was a nice bit of heat in 'em (although there's no heat in the "chipotle garlic ranch" sauce). If you're a fan of Monte Cristos, I bet you'd like this place. I was also impressed with the selection of local sodas and beers. All top shelf stuff but at decent prices. Service was good and the walls had fun art on them. One quick warning that St Louisians use Provel and provolone interchangeably. One of us got a calzone that was listed as using provolone but used Provel instead. If you don't know the difference, Provel is to provolone what velveeta is to cheddar. Some people love it and others don't. Other than that mixup, which wasn't that big a deal for us, it was a great experience and we'll definitely go back. read more

I've had a long list of places to go, but I had to add this to the list because me being a St. Louis guy I have to stay close to my roots and support. And of course, St. Louis did not let me down. Say what you want about St. Louis but we know food. Every state I've lived in and travel to food is the most important part. Obviously, I had to get to meet me in St. Louis here. It had the signature St. Louis provel cheese and was so nicely made. If you've been to St. Louis, you know we have imos pizza thin crust with the provel cheese. This was like if Imos made a thick crust. The meat sauce was a perfect sauce on the side and I think next time I need to add ranch as well. Pesto queso intrigued me so I just added that and it was actually a hit (Gave me restaurant menu thoughts about a pesto nachos) Overall place has great vibes great service and you can tell they care about flavor which at the core of St. Louis food that's what it's all about. read more

It was really good though....more than enough food. The outside is crispy like the bottom of a deep dish pizza, and the inside is like your favorite lasagne. The ricotta MAKES it and keeps it hot til the last bite. Knife and fork I would recommend, Pair that with their excellent brewed pure sugar sodas AND a portion large enough for a next day snack, you've got the perfect lunch++.
