I stopped by here for the first time on a Sunday night at 9 pm with a friend. When we parked, we weren't sure that the restaurant was open, as we could see that there were no customers inside and an employee was mopping the floor. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00 pm, so we forged ahead, expecting to be informed that they were closing soon and they we no longer taking orders. But we were pleasantly surprised when we were warmly greeted by all three employees present, including the one mopping the floor. We were asked if it was our first time there, and then we were givien a thorough explanation of the menu, and how to place our orders. The service was excellent. Even though you order at the counter, employees serve your food and stop by your table frequently to check on things, and to offer refills on drinks. Our calzones were a perfect balance of crust, cheese, and ingredients. Calzones I have had at other restaurants were mostly too doughy, with too much bread and few ingredients. But these were excellent, the crust was golden brown with just the right amount of vegetables and cheese. Mine was the Garden, and it contained spinach, eggplant, snow peas, onions, zucchini, roasted garlic, ricotta and mozzarella. There is a recommended sauce for each but you can choose any sauce or sauces you would like. I chose the BBQ ranch which was excellent. And the calzones were huge! I ended up taking home half of mine, mostly because we wanted to try a dessert. The dessert we decided on was the Caramel Apple Pie. Even sharing it we could only eat half as it was huge too. Good thing there are takeout boxes stacked near the soda machine. This pie featured hot apples with cinnamon, graham crackers and a delicious crumbly crust. Ghirardelli caramel sauce was on top. This was one excellent apple pie! I would stop here just for dessert. The craft sodas are unique and a nice change from the usual Coke or Pepsi products. And the glasses are real glass, not paper or Styrofoam. And the plates are real, too, as well as the silverware which is wrapped in napkins on the tables. I'm a fan! I'm updating my review because the calzones we got on our second visit were great! Maybe it was the kind we got: the Fatty B (pepperoni, meatballs, onion, provolone, roasted garlic, mozzarella, ricotta and garlic oil) and the Carmen (prosciutto, capicola, spinach, parmesan, fontina, ricotta and garlic oil). These will be our go-to calzones from now on. Especially the Fatty B. That tastes the way a calzone should taste. We also got a beer at the bar and stayed and watched a game on the TV. Such a great place! My wife and I have eaten here several times and never had a bad experience. Today I got the Duke, and she got the Magic Carpet Ride. I've also enjoyed the Which Came First, Pancho Villa, and the Five-O. You can pick whichever sauce you like if you're not interested in their suggested sauce. I've done that a few times. Only thing that stands out in my memory about sauces is that while the queso is delicious, it can be overpowering. When I added it to a calzone, it was the main, if not the only thing, I tasted. We ordered a Fatty B to-go. The boy who took our order was very forthcoming and eager to talk to us. Our order was placed about an hour before closing and they said it would take 15 minutes. After waiting over 25 minutes, we started to get a little concerned. Then, a man who I assumed was the cook came out and apologized, saying that the bottom of our calzone fell out and needed to be remade. Accidents happen! And I appreciated the transparency. So we waited another few minutes and received our calzone. The calzone was quite large and I was glad to be sharing it with someone else. I wouldn't have been able to eat a whole one in one sitting. It was flavorful and the sauce was good as well. It was a little burnt on the top, and the underside was completely black. The burnt aspect of it didn't take away from the flavor, but it was a little toastier than normal. Good place overall! read more

Their drink selection was nice and broad. Ranging from craft beer, wine, to pure cane sugar sodas. I checked out the wall art and tried the variety cola as my lovely Olivia tried the Metazoa "Nap in the Hammock" Cream ale. When it came to our calzone choices I went with the Carmen calzone. Prosciutto, capicola, spinach, fontina, ricotta, and garlic oil. Olivia went a little more classic with the Costanza. Pepperoni, eggplant, whole cloves of roasted garlic (which she absolutely loved), basil, mozzarella, ricotta, and a lovely garlic honey oil. They were both wonderful. Delicate dough with just the right chew. Solid ingredients. Balanced flavors. Very well done. They had dessert calzones as an option to finish your meal. And as I saw them both on a fellows patrons table I knew I just HAD to get the pair. The caramel apple pie and the Nutella banana. I came here for Dinner one evening, and I had never eaten here before. Their photos here on Yelp looked pretty appraising, so it drew my interest quickly. I was so grateful that I chose this place! The entire experience was perfect. The employees were very polite, welcoming, and attentive of guiding me through the menu. They even offered free samples of their in-house made sauces to try before ordering. That won me over very quickly. I ordered the Chicken Cesar Salad for an appetizer. It was fresh, crisp, and delicious! They hand-sliced the Chicken deli style too, which was a huge bonus. Plus, the Romaine was healthy and refreshing. It was not soggy on any level, and the flavor was strong. The Calzone itself was absolutely to die for! It was packed with high quality meats, cheeses, and sauce. The crust was stone-baked to perfection. Unfortunately, it is hard to find Calzones that are worth your time because looks can be deceiving. They usually look packed with ingredients, only to find out it's an air-pocket, and you barely get any filling with overwhelming amounts of crust. The Calzones here were 100% legitimate and worth your consumption. Not to mention the flavor was out of this world. Crispy on the outside, melty and gooey on the inside. Just the way it should be! The sauces were amazing too! There were so many to choose from, and they were all so special. They each offered a personality of their own. WORD OF CAUTION: the place smells of good garlicky flavor as any pizzeria/calzone place would, and that garlic is even in the oil on all food. I only add this caution as I have somewhat of an intolerance with garlic. I love the flavor but it is not my friend. Wow, Wow, Wow!! That pretty much sums up my food order from Sauce on the Side in Carmel. I was very impressed with the Strawberry Fields salad. It exceeded my expectations tremendously! The Salad was healthy and tasted amazing!! There was the right amount of Strawberries, walnuts, Cranberries, and kale in the salad! I would say this is probably the best salad I have ordered through Uber Eats in a long time! It was just perfect in every way! The Roasty Toasty Calzone was huge and tasted delicious, but was not falling in love with the Calzone. The pesto dipping sauce with the Calzone did make a huge difference. It complimented the calzone very well. If it wasn't for the pesto dipping sauce, the calzone would not be good by itself. The calzone was bland by itself, but tasted wonderful with the pesto dipping sauce. The presentation was very nice for the Calzone, but needs to improve with quality taste wise. Other than that, I enjoyed it very much, but the Strawberry Fields salad was the pure winner of the bunch. I will definitely order the salad again! I will try a different calzone next time to see if the taste improves, as long as there is a dipping sauce with it. The salad was the zen garden. I was really impressed by the salad which is an Asian inspired creation. I am a big fan of any salad with mandarin oranges and sesame seeds. I choose spicy marinara sauce with arugula, basil, and roasted garlic. Word to the wise, if you can't handle a ton of garlic, be careful ordering the roasted garlic. It comes in whole gloves vs minced up. Overall the crust was dense and chewy. Probably not my ideal calzone crust. I was on my way for some orange chicken when I passed by here. My stomach said "bear food can wait, it's calzone time." Beat decision of my day, which is saying a lot because today I extended my Wordle streak to 55 and was pretty impressed with myself already. It was 2:00 so hardly anyone was there, but the place was clean and the staff were friendly. They took the time to give me a rundown of the menu and I ordered the March Special. It had corned beef in it, so my Irish ancestors must be feeling fat and sassy. The sauce, indeed, comes on the side for dipping pleasure. The calzone was huge and crispy, insides tender and delish. I had a horseradish ranch as a sauce which was neither too horsey, nor too radishy. I probably will be eating a lot less orange chicken when I'm over here in the future. First time here! Decided to try something new and different, which is lacking in my area. It was pretty good! I did have a hiccup with my calzone though--it was pretty cold. Outside was hot and crispy and the ingredients on the inside were still cold. That wasn't pleasant. Brought it back to the kitchen and they remade me one and then it was perfect! I hope the owner sees this part though...PLEASE get different plates to eat off of! These odd shaped plates make it difficult to cut up your food. Also, the silverware slides off of the plate, no matter where you set it, making a big mess on my shirt and in my lap. The wavy plate design LOOKS pretty but it isn't practical in the slightest. They have craft sodas, which is unique. They have several different delicious sauces to dip your calzone in, although I found, you didn't need much of those sauces since the calzone was full of flavor. The first time walking into Sauce on the Side is a little confusing on what to do because there is a menu on the wall, a walk-up register & also paper menus. So I grabbed a menu, grabbed a table & then walked up to the register to order when I was ready (which took a while for me to decide what to get because they have a lot of fun options!) I got a Carmen (prosciutto, spinach, cheese, etc). It was great! I wasn't a fan of the dipping sauce that it came with because it seemed like something you would dip crab legs in instead of a calzone haha. But the calzone was so great that I didn't need any dipping sauces. For dessert, i ordered the banana Nutella calzone, but they were out of banana, so they offered the caramel apple instead. My husband ordered some kind of sweet bbq sauce on the side that went perfectly with it. It was amazing. I also got a Nutella and banana dessert calzone, cause I freaking earned it, and it was also perfect. I will say that I enjoyed this hours after we picked up our food cause, you know, hospitals and the baby, but it was still delicious. Mine was very runny, like the Nutella just spilled everywhere when I cut into it but I wouldn't be surprised if that's because it was sitting for awhile. Even if that's just how it is - it was perfect and I loved it. It was also a full sized calzone, which I wasn't expecting but I wasn't upset about. I tried sauce on the side for dinner today. I had the meet me in the lou, which is supposedly one of their most popular calzones. I took the food to go. It took about 20 min for my food to be ready. I'm a huge fan of calzones but this was just okay. It was made with provolone cheese - which is popular for pizza is St Louis. The cheeses, pepperoni, and sausage were delicious. Also they have many different types of sauce. This came with a meat sauce that was delicious. Unfortunately, the crust/dough was just okay at best. It may have been better if it was cooked longer. I ended up eating the inside and throwing the crust away. Not sure if I'll be back because good crust/dough is important to a calzone. read more
