It got to the point where I started going to Wingstop just to mix it up because if I had to smell that fried chicken that had been run through unchanged olive oil one more time, I was going to turn into the f---ing Joker. That is, until now. How many times did we drive by this place and not think twice of it over the past 18 months, I don't know. More than a hundred? And then yesterday the wife and I noticed this inflatable chicken outside with an arm spinning as if to beckon us into the storefront. I need to take a picture with this thing next time, it is incredible. Anyway, listen to the inflatable chicken. As American chicken wings go, this is as good as it gets here in LA. Let me get down to it: There is a significant amount of attention paid to the ingredients and preparation of the food here. I got the lemon pepper wings (I know) mostly because I wanted to assess the fry on the chicken and actually taste the chicken. First things first: This is definitely an air-chilled bird. Chicken tastes clean. The flats are fresh, a neat sheath of skin fried to a perfect crispy bronze, still intact, clinging tightly to dark meat underneath. Of the 10 pieces I received, there was no breakage in the bones or internal bleeding in any of them. These are the important details to me. This place has every excuse to use chlorine-bathed commodity birds; after all, it's better obscured by sauce at wing joint than most other applications. They didn't do that. They used a quality bird. They don't cut corners. The lemon pepper rub on this chicken is intense. If flavors were colors, the Wingstop lemon pepper feels like a black-and-white version of lemon pepper. Saucy Bird's lemon pepper would be like experiencing high-definition color after watching black and white. It is tangy, which it needs to be because the entire point of lemon pepper is cutting through the schmaltz on the skin of a chicken wing. The fries -- Jaaaaaysus Crast. Triple fried wedges in beef tallow, with that nigh-mashed-potato-like inside and craggy, crispy-crunchy exterior. You probably haven't had a fry quite like this one before. And the final note, the thing that all restaurateurs, industry people and yes, even us dumbshit writers appreciate: This place is god damned immaculate. I don't use that word lightly. It is absolutely insane that a restaurant that shows sports on TVs is this clean. I can't get over it, I'm still thinking about it. You guys know me, you guys know how I feel about clean. I am a die hard Wing Stop girl, but when I drove by Saucy Bird, checked out the menu and saw a loganberry flavor, I knew I would have to put it on my to try list. Stopped by on Sunday around 4pm and there was not a single soul in the restaurant. Eeek, not a good sign, but I'm still gonna give it a try. I ordered the 10 piece wings, half lemon pepper/half loganberry, with ranch, carrots + celery and a side of fries. First initial thought was dang that bag of food smells gooooood. Lemon pepper tasted pretty much the same as Wing Stop. Nice and crispy. Loganberry was fruity with a hint of BBQ. Exactly what I would expect wings from the Knott's Berry Farm boysenberry festival to taste like. Not as crispy as the lemon pepper because of the sauce, not dry rub. Carrots + celery were seriously sad. I felt like they picked up the carrots of many colors from Trader Joe's and served those. 3 sad carrots and 3 sad celeries. Fries were very thick wedge/steak style fries. I noticed my bag was already leaking grease as soon as they gave it to me and it was from the fries, which continued to leak through every paper surface I put them on. The edges were crispy, but I would have liked them to be a tad bit more crispy throughout the fry. They were so big and thick I couldn't even eat all of them, with the potato paste thick in my mouth. The ranch was good, very herby, and a nice portion size. I had enough for all my wing dipping delight. Would I go back? Maybe, to try the strawberry hibiscus habanero wings. As someone from the south, I have high expectations when it comes to chicken wings! And I definitely found the match! Saucy bird is by far my favorite wing spot in LA. They nailed the flavors down! They also have fries that are fried and beef tallow! The chicken tenders are super juicy and delicious! I also love the sauce options here! The service here is amazing and the only difficult part is finding parking, but there is residential area behind the building! I went on a Saturday and they had football on a large projection screen. I had the Nashville Chicken Sandwich and found it very tasty. They use thigh meat, which I think is the only way to do it. Personally, I think it could have been a little spicier and that's saying a lot as I normally get mild. Next time I'm in the area, I'd be happy to try them again. read more

The entrance is something to experience. You think you're walking into a small restaurant but when you turn the corner you are welcomed by the cashier and an open floor plan. OK, so first off I need to make one thing clear: I am an avid Buffalo Bills fan, and as such, I am an avid Buffalo WINGS fan. Boyfriend and I love trying new places, we wanted wings. We drove to LA on August 3rd. I googled and this places has good reviews. We got into town around 6pm, they closed at 8pm so they weren't busy at all. We were the only customers in the entire restaurant. The female who greeted us and took our order was extremely friendly. Food came out fast and was very hot. Really good flavor on the wings, I just got buffalo. My boyfriend ordered a chicken sandwich (forgot which one) but chicken was good. FINALLY a good wing spot on the Westside! I've been looking for literal years and I found it. Saucy Bird has wings, tenders, and sandwiches and all are delicious. I especially love the Buffalo sauce, but everything I had I would get again. I'm not usually a Lemon Pepper fan either but they've converted me. Probably my favorite thing here, though, is the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. It was perfect, with crispy, spicy chicken and tangy mayo. A great bite and one worth coming back for in itself! The service was so so good, with people checking in on me throughout my meal and making sure everything was good and up to standards. (It was every time, obviously.) The Baseline: For a Chicken restaurant you need to have good quality chicken, good sides, good sauce/rubs, and preparation of all ingredients. Food: I had the Nashville Bird Sammie, the beef tallow fries, and a Mexican Coke. The Sammie was cooked well with a good application of breading and served at a hot temperature. If I had to give it a hit it would be that it was not spicy like I was expecting with a Nashville Sammie. If I were to get it again I would request it sauced and tossed in a hot sauce before it was nestled on the bun. The bread on the Sammie was great and it was imprinted with the Saucy Bird logo (great touch). I also had the fries... yes, Yes, YES on the fries. They are really wedges and they are fried in beef tallow. Beef and Potato are natural friends so I recommend. I also had a Mexican Coke so real sugar sodas are always better than overly sweet corn syrup soda. Also the waitress gave me a full chilled water bottle with a glass of ice. Loved that. Service: I had great service and the waitress that took my order and made sure I was taken care of. I asked for Blue cheese because the sammie came with carrot and celery sticks. I was also given a chilled water bottle for my water so that was really extra. Ambiance: If you are a Buffalo Bills fan you will love the ambiance. First time trying Saucy Bird thanks to the neighborhood coupon saver. I went on Saturday around 11am, and the place was empty. There's a big screen projector and lots of Josh Allen and Buffalo Bills memorabilia (owner is from Buffalo), so I'm sure NFL game days are fun. I ordered the single (10 wings) Sichuan style and lemon pepper wings with blue ranch sauce. Service was super friendly, and the food was ready in 10-15 minutes. It looked like the workers were preparing and cooking to order, so yay for that. I was pleasantly surprised that the wings came with multi-colored, fresh carrots and celery. The blue ranch sauce appeared and tasted homemade. Not a strong bleu cheese flavor, maybe more of a mayo base. It was a perfect accompaniment to the wings and veggies. The Sichuan wings had a tinge of a buffalo sauce flavor and a mild kick. The lemon pepper wings were very lemony, less peppery. Some didn't have a whole lot of meat on the bones, but I appreciated that everything tasted fresh. My only request is that they offer a garlic flavored wing! That would make Saucy Bird a regular in my rotation. That said, I really enjoyed my meal and will def be back to try the chicken (or mushroom!) sandwiches. read more

Sometimes you drive by a place, finally stop, and it's everything you want it to be. This is an authentic Buffalo Wing style joint. The sauce is exceptional and tastes just like the real deal buffalo style chicken wing sauce. I highly recommend the buffalo chicken sandwich. Got the Nashville Bird here and it was sauced perfectly. We ordered the kid's meal for my son and I was impressed to see that these nuggets were the real deal; every parent would rather get nuggets made in-house rather than processed for their kid. The fries are unbelievable. They're soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside and perfectly seasoned. Don't get me started on the smores chocolate chip cookie. I see some reviews docking a star because of the price. I'm not going to complain about the price as that is the world we live in. Wow, Actual quality chicken shop. You don't see this often, a truly locally owned place, with great staff, and food that isn't just Sysco crap. They say their chickens come from Petaluma Farms in NorCal and I have no reason to doubt that. I dont think I've ever been to a place that sells fried chicken which lists a single source for free-range chicken. They make everything in house and my daughter has fallen in love with their kid's chicken fingers. My wife and I have been enjoying the adult naked fingers as well and love the heirloom carrots that come with the fingers. Is it more expensive than Raisin Canes? Yes. Is the quality waaaaaay better? Also yes. While we don't eat out much anymore, Saucy Bird is now in our regular rotation. Update: Just had the fries -- wow, amazing.
