1) From one doctor - "My patient medically needed a breast reduction. The surgeon (Dr. Berger), however, did more extensive procedures than necessary or agreed upon at the same time. It appears the lipo has irreversibly destroyed much of the patient's subcutaneous and myofasical and other tissues - more than just removing subcutaneous fat. The myofasical supporting structures have been perturbed in such a way as to lead to her chronic pain and abnormal postural alignment, which then leads to many orthopedic and other problems. As you can see, the tissues are over-stretched leading to multiple pockets of adhesions that pull tightly upon movement. The most dramatic areas are at the buttocks, thighs, and flanks. These procedures, when performed, cause many other systems of the body to be affected -- muscular, lymphatic, circulatory, mobility and others. Before surgery the patient was a highly functional, physically active, and employed person. Now Ms. L is totally and permanently disabled, and her health continues to decline." 2) From another doctor - "Dr. Berger has claimed in sworn testimony that he only performed procedures on Ms. L for which consent had been obtained. This, however, is not true. Dr. Berger was asked in testimony if at "any point in time during the procedure, did you do any liposuction in the area of the buttock?" This is all the direct result of the overly aggressive and unconsented surgical procedures that Dr. Berger performed on her. 100 stars!!! Any surgery can be extremely personal and emotional, but I'm pretty sure a mastectomy and breast reconstruction is pretty high up there...if we're ranking them. I just had my 2nd surgery with Dr. Berger for my breast reconstruction after a double mastectomy and I couldn't have been blessed with a better doctor or team. From day one he's been fantastic, patient, kind, funny, thorough and I always left his office knowing I was in safe hands with this very delicate and personal experience. Dr Berger did a bilateral breast reconstruction after I had breast cancer and radical mastectomy in 2009-2010. The life of my silicone implants is 7 years. Recently I started having some discomfort on the right side and was questioning the implant. I called to schedule an appointment and was told that Dr Berger no longer has a contract with my Anthem Blue Cross PPO. I still agreed to see him and to the fee of 300 dollars. All I wanted is to receive his humble advice as to whether this was a normal occurrence or a further investigation was in order. On the day of the appointment, not suspecting anything, I called his office to let them know that I was going to be about 15 minutes late as there was a major accident on the 101 freeway. To my surprise, I was told that unfortunately, I cannot be seen due to my anticipated late arrival. I was nearly there and insisted to come in anyway. Angie, the receptionist, with a personality of a ferocious dog, informed me that the doctor's schedule was completely booked and he was 5 minutes away from seeing his next patient. I arrived 20 minutes late and was expecting to see the waiting room booming with eager customers. Instead, I found the place unusually quiet and peaceful. In disbelief, I asked to reschedule or even wait longer. Angie, unfortunately wouldn't have any of my nonsense. She angrily yelled that the doctor was not seeing anyone later that afternoon, {it was 1030 am}, and that he was solidly booked for the next three months. For fear of her becoming violent, I left shortly and in a flood of tears called back his office to speak with Marianne his booking manager. Marianne gave me a long winded lecture about tardiness and professional conduct without even the slightest empathy to my situation. I.E post traumatic breast cancer experience and fear of recurrence. She also confirmed that Dr Berger is extremely busy and definitely not seeing breast cancer patients even if very old ones, not even later, not ever. Clearly Dr Berger was afraid that if something had gone wrong with my implants and he had to fix it without the contract with the insurance the financial responsibility would be his and he just wouldn't make such a poor deal. I found Dr. Berger browsing the Internet as I was looking for an alternative to Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery. November 2015 I went for my consultation and discussed my goals with Dr. Berger and his staff. His staff was very friendly and professional. I've gone to other consultations and didn't have a good comfort level and felt very pressured into surgery ASAP. With Dr. Berger on the other hand, I knew within the 1st 10 minutes of our consultation that he would be my surgeon! He was very knowledgeable, professional, caring, but most importantly he was "honest" in regards to the questions and concerns I had about my goals and the surgery. Unlike most plastic surgeon office, Dr. Berger does charge a consultation fee and if you decided to move forward with surgery the consultation fee does not apply towards your balance. I was interested in having surgery within the beginning of the 2016 year. The office gave me a quote that was good for 7 months so I didn't have to rush my surgery. That was a major bonus! Unfortunately, my insurance (Kaiser Permanente) wouldn't cover my pre-op blood work required for surgery. So the office referred me to Quest Diagnostics for my pre- op blood work. The blood work was nearly an extra $300 expense. Plan accordingly, and do not be surprised if your insurance company does not cover the pre-op blood work. I also like the fact that Dr. Berger is proactive and gives his patience pre-op prescriptions to help minimize the risk of infections from surgery. Not all plastic surgeons do. My surgery was March 13, 2016 and 7 months later here I am looking fantastic!!!! Dr. Berger was able to achieve the exact look I was aiming for. I wanted to go as big as possible while still maintaining a natural appearance. Prior to surgery I was 34 "B" and now I am "DD" (L 590cc R 550cc Saline). While that may seem like a big jump, it compliments my body very well since I have a curvy frame. Many people who have completed breast augmentations are going to try and give you advice on what to do and not do. I urge you follow Dr. Berger instructions, pre and op surgery. Surgery is a case-by-case situation and what is instructed for someone else may not be necessary for you and vice versa. I see negative reviews about staff and billing and I'm not sure what office they encountered because this was not my experience. Front desk staff is friendly, Maryann (breast augmentation specialist) has a very bubbly personality that will wake you up, so be ready. I had a breast augmentation: 330 cc moderate profile silicone implants under the muscle. I am 23 years old, 5'0, 115 pounds, and do not have any kids. Pre-op I was a 32 B at Victoria Secrets. This is a long review but I think it is important to understand my experience with Dr. Berger and his staff during my consultation, surgery, and post-op. Consultation: I had two consultations before going to Dr. Berger. I had a very close friend who went to Dr. Berger (her breast look amazing and very natural) but I thought it was important to go to multiple consultations. I did not feel comfortable with my previous consultations at all; I felt rushed and like I was not being taken serious. The moment I stepped into Dr. Berger's office I had a good feeling. When I met with Marianne (the surgical coordinator) she was so kind and made me feel very comfortable. When I met Dr. Berger he was very kind and patient. He did not know I was ready to book my surgery that day and he took his time during his examine and did not make me feel rushed. He performed a very detailed examine and addressed things that my previous consultations never addressed. Dr. Berger personalizes his care based on your unique circumstances. The office stayed open almost 2 hours after closing to address all my concerns and book my surgery. Surgery: EVERYONE was very kind, friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. The nurse and anesthesiologist were very friendly and made me feel very comfortable. I went home after surgery, fell asleep for 3 hours, and then woke up and had a full meal. I would rate my pain 3/10 (0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain I have ever been in). I took my pain medications on time. I did not have any side effects from the anesthesia. Post-op: I would rate my pain a 3/10. I felt tightness and soreness but mostly tightness. It felt like I did an intense chest workout or like I was wearing a really tight bra. After a week I would rate my pain 0/10. By two weeks I felt like my new breast were mine. It is very important to follow Dr. Berger's post-op instructions to have the best results. Dr. Berger gave me EXACTLY want I wanted! I attribute this to Dr. Berger's amazing technique. After 3 days I only took Tylenol for the "pain". Overall my recovery has been very easy. We have known Dr. Berger since 2009 when we were interviewing plastic surgeons for our 18 year old daughter that needed a breast reduction. I had facelift surgery with Dr. Berger in 2015 and was very satisfied with my results. That same year my daughter had a breast lift with implant surgery. Within a month you could tell it was bad. Her breasts bottom out and her incisions left some pretty bad scarring. Dr. Berger basically told us sometimes this happens and didn't want to take any responsibility for the outcome. He gave us a plan how to fix them with a small discount. We decided to go somewhere else . My daughter is going to have breast revision surgery in September . This review is apparently long overdue as I had my first surgery with Dr. Berger in 2012 another one in 2013 and am getting ready for one at the end of this month. Dr. Berger was referred to me by my award winning bariatric surgeon after my weight loss of over 130 pounds had left me with excess skin that had to be removed. It is always surprising to me when I see any reviews of doctors on Yelp as I usually refer to Yelp when looking for other type of services- like a cell phone repair company, a florist, a good restaurant nearby, an electrician a plumber... but a doctor ? I trust my fellow Yelpers but let's be honest choosing a doctor is very serious and we're not talking about an eye doctor we're talking SURGEON ! When looking for a doctor/surgeon I may ask another doctor whom I trust, maybe consult with someone who has already had a similar surgery, I check credentials, maybe talk to a person in the waiting room who is there on a post op appt. on the same day I am there for a consult---- I may even refer to a site like "Realself" BUT I would not refer to Yelp (sorry Yelpers). I say this because some people write good reviews for doctors based on before and after pics before ever having a consult while others write negative reviews based on billing or customer service. This Yelp is clearly for Saul R Berger, MD not staff or billing department --. seeing a negative review about a billing issue or a rude employee (which mind you I have never encountered) is just absurd.(insert angry emoji) Dr. Berger is a great surgeon! I had a procedure and it was a total disaster due to his recommendation of not going under the muscle for a BA. My skin basically ripped since the size and position of implant did not work for my body frame, the implants were u set 300 cc so nothing huge. I ended up having both implants removed and wasted over 7k. He was not willing to work with me on price to repair instead he quoted me another 7k to have them redone even though his recommendation was not suitable. I went to 3 other doctors after who all said he should have gone under the muscle for my type of body frame. I am not the doctor and have no knowledge of where or how implants should be positioned. I was told the procedure would be one price until I made the appointment. As the appointment got closer, I was told a different price but told not to worry, it would be adjusted. The procedure was for my child and we believed it may be a cancerous growth (it wasn't- thank God) so I didn't want to start over with another doctor. We did the procedure and paid the full amount immediately- a week later we got another bill for the "consultation" $250.00. I asked if that could at least be adjusted since we paid the full amount $1,400.00. BTW we've checked with other surgeons- if you choose to do the procedure, they waive the consultation fee. I wasn't especially impressed with Dr. Berger either. We waited an hour both times we came back, and he spent 5 minutes with us. I had my breast augmentation with Dr. Berger one year ago and I couldn't be happier! He is always on time (never waited more than 10 minutes), professional and for me a big bonus was that he wanted pictures of what I envisioned my breasts looking like. That was a huge deal because I have had many friends go to doctors who all they talk about is CC size. To me that is useless since every girl has different anatomy, rib cage size, shoulers etc. When one girl gets 450 cc's it will not look the same as if I get 450cc's. I loved that I could trust that he needed to make me look like the pictures I gave him. I felt like we had a full understanding prior to surgery so I would not come out with any surprises. I could never repay Dr. Berger for what he has done for me. At 32 I was diagnosed with breast cancer and decided to do a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. Reconstruction was so important to me as a young woman. I wanted to feel confident in a bathing suit, I still wanted to wear sexy tops and dresses, and most of all I wanted to feel confident with my significant other. I am beyond happy with my results. I had heard how some women never feel the same after reconstruction, and I can say I feel even better. In fact, I love my new breasts over my original breasts. I absolutely loved Dr. Berger when I first met him, his staff are absolutely fantastic and he runs a great practice BUT if you are looking for reconstruction AFTER mastectomy this might not be the best choice for you. I think Dr. Berger is skilled when it comes to augmentation surgeries but what he told me my results would be and what they ended up being horrendous. I couldn't believe what I had been left with and he told me "this would be my new normal" and that the giant dog eared flaps under my arms were a result of "obesity" and I would need to pay out of pocket as it would be considered cosmetic! I have since moved NC and met the most FANTASTIC surgeon who is skilled in a variety of procedures and we are fixing what has been done. For the first time since May of 2014 when I had my surgery I can finally say I am at peace and looking forward to looking somewhat normal. Again, I'm not saying he is not a skilled surgeon when it might come to breast augmentations as opposed to mastectomy reconstruction. So while I might recommend him from other procedures I would not in the case of a bilateral mastectomy. read more

After being turned down by my first plastic surgeon consult, we went with Dr. Berger, my second consult. I am glad i got turned down by the first surgeon because I wouldn't have gotten the chance to meet Dr. Berger. Being a minor and needing plastic surgery should not be taken lightly. Dr. Berger answered every single one of my questions without hesitating. We worked as a team to figure out what type of surgery would be best for my situation. My body was like most women, with one breast being larger than the other. But unfortunately my left was a full C and my right was a small B. Along with me having severe anxiety, I told my mother constantly that I never EVER wanted to have sex because i didn't like my body at all. My mom knew I needed this surgery. Dr. berger and I worked out the plan that I would have a areolar mastopexy done on my left, to lift the nipple in align with my right. And on my right breast I had to get an implant. The results are better than I could have ever imagined. They look and feel like nothing ever happened to them; like i was born with them. I didn't want large boobs to begin with since im active in the horse world. And horses and big boobs don't mix. I am now a full C and I can see my future. I didn't know how getting plastic surgery could change your life. It changed mine for the better. I feel happy about how my body looks. And i actually wear clothes I didn't think i would look good in. I feel confident. Wearing a bathing suit for the first time was incredible to see and feel a difference. I didn't know how depressed i was with my body until we did something about the situation. I don't think i would go to another plastic surgeon. My surgery costed a lot of money, but i would go through the same process over and over again. Thank you Dr. Berger!!!! read more
