So, we'll need to update this review later with commentary on their sandwiches and mains We both had the hash which was huge. The flavors were right, the cook was on point The poached eggs perfectly runny A+ The Latkes, again huge, crispy yet creamy. Just wish i had more sour cream and applesauce. Of course, did not ask so another A+ Service was fine going in. We were seated quickly and order taken quickly. Food did not come out to quickly but this is not Burger King Follow up was a bit Meh Ambience was that of a deli and why would it be anything else Loved it although the price was like $30+ each for breakfast with coffees and a shared side. I came here around noon on a Thursday. It was a really nice day so I opted to sit outside. I went back and forth on which type of roast beef sandwich and eventually opted for the soup & sandwich combo for $16. The soup of the day was butternut squash and it was fine. I wish it was a tiny bit saltier and creamier. The soup was still a little lumpy and I would've preferred it smoother, but maybe what I wanted was a bisque? The sandwich was also okay.... I chose sourdough instead of rye and I wonder if it would've been good toasted. The flavors were nice but the meat was really hard to bite through, and the more I struggled, the more the sandwich fell apart. The service was fine, quick and efficient. This meal in particular is a 6.5/10, but many other dishes at Saul's are excellent. I typically order the shakshuka and a side of latkes, but I thought I would switch it up today. read more

One of my years long favs. Rainey day but the closer we all (7) got to our name in line the more huger we all got. No disappointment. Latkays yummy as usual and the kids loved the fluffy pancakes with powered sugar and syrup. Many giggles with little fingers delighted to grab off my plate. It's alright. Could use some more seasoning in the soup but maybe that's how it's suppose to be it wasn't bad. Fries were decent. The beef salami sandwich needed more salami meat in my opinion and for some reason I asked to add mustard to sandwich but didn't receive the Russian dressing that was included on sandwich just mustard lol. We just tried Saul's a few days ago for the first time. The place isn't real big. There are a few pastry/dessert cases when you walk in and we were greeted and shown to a table almost immediately. Our server was Robbie. What a funny, helpful and amazing person. He gave us several suggestions, took our order and kept our water glasses full. My husband had the pastrami sandwich and it looked and tasted very good. It had nice big slices of pastrami on rye with mustard. I don't know what I was expecting, but it was not the thin sliced or processed meat you find in some places. He also had a side of matzoh ball soup. The broth and matzoh ball were very good and it had big pieces of fresh chicken in it. Yum. I had the brisket sandwich. Unfortunately for me, there was so much salad, onions, and sauce on top of the meat, that it masked the taste of the brisket and made the bottom of the roll soggy. Once I removed all of that and it was just the meat, a little bit of the lettuce and sauce on the bread, it was excellent. I would definitely order it again without all the toppings. The shoestring fries were also good. I ordered a side salad, and at Robbie's suggestion, I had the ranch dressing. He said it was made from scratch in the restaurant and that with the combination of herbs they use, he thought it was in his words "Effing amazing!" It was. my husband and I both agreed we would order everything we had again the next time we came with just a slight modification on the brisket sandwich. I don't like leaving negative reviews was in the area and my buddy was telling me about another place nearby and I couldn't find it and I end up finding this place on this app so I wanted to try the pastrami the kinishe matzo ball soup, etc. the works but upon walking in the gentleman host/server our interaction from the get-go was a little off, even as I was ordering kind of felt unwanted there we ended up only ordering pickles, a knish and falafel appetizers we did not order anything else. I just wanted to fill my stomach a little bit and leave. I was done and then that wasn't even as I was leaving. My bill was like $18 or some change. I gave him a $20 bill and he said I'll be back with a change so I got up. I got a five dollar bill out of my pocket I put it on the table and me and my wife. We started a walk towards the door and he had a response like he thought I was only leaving him a dollar tip and I said no look back at the table. I left you more me and my wife looked at each other and we just continued to walk out. I was not going to leave a Review but it kind of bothered me so I don't know what happened there. Stopped into Saul's because its kind of an institution. The sandwiches here are no joke and mine was delicious, they also keep healthy amounts of mustard on the table at all times which is greatly appreciated. The latke was crunchy and the sandwich was FAT. I did not need dinner after this meal. I did need a nap. Big props to the sandwich bread for sticking it out to the end. People love Saul's though so if you're going for lunch on a saturday expect a wait. Inside is all hustle and bustle like you would expect from a deli style restaurant and they have the cute booths to really match the environment they're fostering. The reason I put 4 instead of 5 stars is because it is a bit pricy and while that makes sense for the amount of meat in the sandwiches, it was a bit much for the hot chocolate which honestly was pretty bland. Went on a Friday afternoon around 12:30 and it was packed! We waited around 20 mins for indoor seating, since it was a little chilly outside but passed the time quickly at the nearby Books Inc (check out the 25% off store wide closing sale before 2/9!). Once seated, our waiter was great and very patient as we deliberated over the extensive menu. I ordered the half sandwich half soup combo and got the pastrami on rye with matzo ball soup. The sandwich was really good and had a good amount of Russian dressing and coleslaw to keep it from being too dry. Add some mustard from the table if you find the pastrami a bit salty. I've been very very bad. Every time I visit this gem I order one thing: The Pastrami Ruskie with Pastrami, swiss cheese, russian dressing and cole slaw on grilled rye. It's one of the best Pastrami sandwiches I've ever had. Next time I promise, I'm going to expand my horizons. I'm seriously going to look at: The Tuna Melt with albacore tuna salad on grilled w/ swiss cheese on rye or maybe The Chopped Chicken Liver Sandwich with chopped chicken liver served on rye with tomato & caramelized onion or possibly The Corned Beef served on rye. The Corned Beef Brisket is simmered for hours in pickling spices then steamed to perfection and served on warm rye. They all look so good! Don't get me wrong, Sauls has delicious food! Incredible pastrami, matzo ball soup, and more! Sauls is nostalgic for me. I've been coming with my family for almost 20 years! Since there's no good Jewish food in Sacramento, Sauls is the closest "go to" spot for me. However, as of late Sauls has been getting cheap. I don't understand why. Charging people extra for pickles? $26 for a pastrami sandwich? It's just not necessary. Atmosphere is always amazing. Loud and "family dinner-table" vibes. Service is fantastic as well. Stopped by here two weekends agowith my girlfriend after hearing about this place from my roommate - this place is definitely high up on my list of delis in the Bay Area. We arrived around 1 on a Saturday and the place was packed. After a short wait (about 15 minutes or so) we were seated indoors without issues. For our meal, my girlfriend and I shared an order of Knish and Latke, I got a Gretchen with a side of Potato Salad, and my girlfriend got the Mushroom Reuben with a side of fries. The knish and latke were both great - the latke was perfectly crispy on the outside and light and airy on the inside. And the knish was a very pleasant surprise - the potato filling was seasoned very well and it was honestly reminiscent of a Samosa. For the sandwiches - The Gretchen is a corned beef sandwich with a some excellent extra accoutrements. The flavors of the meat, zhoug, mayo, and pickled cabbage combined worked extremely well together and made for a perfect savory sandwich. The Mushroom reuben was also done very well - the rye bread used was some of the best I've had in the bay. The sides we got were fairly standard - the potato salad was solid and the fries were alright. With that said, the sandwiches and the traditional jewish deli items are the standouts for sure. In terms of ambiance, Saul's reminds me of a classic deli/ old school diner which I greatly appreciate. And the staff we interacted with were all very friendly and patient. All in all, I absolutely loved my experience at Saul's and I can't recommend it enough. I'll definitely be back here soon (I tried stopping by last weekend by myself.... but it was slammed. Small portion of dryish smoked sturgeon with dry rye bread. Blah salad - lots of not very fresh lettuce, cabbage and carrot with a boring vinaigrette dressing. My husband's omelette had very little pastrami and cheese. His home fries were soggy and tasted sweet, probably because the potatoes had been kept in the fridge - not the right way to store potatoes. So originally we were supposed to have brunch at eggies, but they were closed due to construction so we decided to go somewhere nearby. We found Saul's as we walked up the block and immediately saw they were pretty busy and they served breakfast lunch and dinner here so we decided to give it a try. We got a table for 6 and they accommodated us very quickly: The restaurant was beautiful, they have pastries on display in the front of store, portraits and pictures of history on the walls, and it gave an old school diner feel. We looked over the menu and saw they had a lot of different options, it was so hard to decide so I looked up the reviews from the restaurant and it said the pastrami Rueben was one of the best so I got that. With a side of potatoe salad. We also tried the pickle plate, which was a plate of pickled veggies and it was different. It was nice to try something new, the drinks were great but pricey. We had dinner last night at Saul's with old friends. None of us had been to Saul's for dinner in a couple of years, and we were looking forward to a nice meal at a restaurant that we had all always loved. I'm sad to say, that's so many things went wrong, and the food was so unremarkable, different than it used to be, we won't be going back. The service was inattentive, lackadaisical, careless, thoughtless. I had to ask for my drink twice. My sandwich was given to me on stale bread, we needed spoons and napkins, and had to get up and get them ourselves, at 6:30 on a Monday night, they were out of everything my husband wanted to order. I cannot remember what else went wrong, but you get the you'll get the sense of how things have gone downhill there. I'm sorry Saul's. What a gem! Casual dining at its finest, but with considerably better quality than your average diner. It's been a long while since I've had a good latke, so for me to discover something like Saul's is like rediscovering soul-food. What better than to share this discovery with a group? Everybody had a great meal experience as everything went smoothly and enjoyed their dishes, even despite folks' lack of familiarity with Jewish cuisine. Dining at peak hours on Thursday evening, we encountered nothing but exceptional service from start to finish. Great recommendations and suggestions from our server, plus we were checked on frequently and didn't really have any delays on anything. Parking might be a bit tricky as it's just street parking with a small mini cluster of street slots right outside Saul's that isn't nearly enough for the area. ==Chicken Schnitzel - 5/5 Excellent crunch and surprisingly quite moist meat, which was not what I was expecting for the thickness of the cut. The sauces were a bit all over the place, so not the cleanest presentation, but the pairings were great. A milder tahini like dip and popping curry-like glaze. I have no idea what those were but it was quite addictive! Also came with creamy mashed potatoes. Very hard to argue with this one, definitely top notch. ==Cheese Blintz - 5/5 The interior filling was a smidge sweet for me, but richly creamy and a nice browned aroma all around from the exterior. I didn't think it needed the extra condiments, but to each their own. Definitely very filling though so adjust down from expectations of how much you'll be able to eat; these guys are sizable! ==Latkes - 5/5 Perfectly fried glory with plenty of apple sauce and sour cream, like this guy was seriously crispy. I'd definitely have had more if i didn't want to sample everything else we had ordered (and I already took most of the extra piece between our group). ==Pastrami - 5/5 Honestly some of the best pastrami I've had in the bay. Uniquely moist and flavorful with a lovely pairing of mustard and lightly toasted rye. Simple, but special. The open faced serving was a nice way of having it easier to share too, which was a different yet optimal way of having it served for groups. ==Shakshouka - 4/5 Bright and beautiful, though I feel like the only technical aspect that could've been improved was the spicing (needed just a bit more of it). Long wait but the foods are out of expectations, very tasty! Me and my family came here on Mother's Day for brunch. We are all surprised for the tasty foods. We sat outdoor and enjoyed playing with the dogs around us. The only bad experience was the restroom hallway, (restrooms were terribly dirty, pee and water all over, hand towels and shredded toilet paper were all over the toilet and trash bin), which actually also the hallway for the kitchen. I went out from the restroom with my elderly mom and walked on the hallway back to the main door. A guy from the kitchen yelled at us "this is the kitchen go away, walk here (pointing to the indoor dining area). I was holding my elderly mom who has a knee problem and luckily he didn't push us, but I was kinda pissed off bcoz of his gestures in the public. That was the only pathway for us to go outside! Yes I saw another waitress was so mean throwing the food plates to the guests of another table, but what else we can do? May be they are too mad during a busy day, they need to vent their anger?! Overall, idk what else to review but I will definitely come here again, just simply bcoz of the tasty Shakshouka, not the "rude gentleman", esp he is not a waiter. read more

Today is Nina's and my 55th anniversary of friendship and we celebrated it w/ chicken liver dinners at Saul's. Every year her ex-husband celebrated Beethoven's birthday on December16th w/ a party. I was friendly w/ the women he supervised at the Social Service Department and so I became friends w/ him too, and I was invited to the party, along w/ my first husband. That was when I met Nina. I picked Nina up about 6:00 and we drove over to Saul's. We found parking readily, as we almost always do, and walked over to the restaurant. We walked in and the hostess seated us at a table for 4, w/ three menus. I'm not sure how she got the impression there were three of us, but she did. We knew what we wanted so didn't peruse the menu. Our server was a jovial man w/ a long pigtail and a ball cap. We told him the reason for our dinner and he was impressed. He took our orders: chicken livers dinner, double vegetables rather than mashed potatoes, and a starter of pickles. I wanted to have champagne, but Nina is unable to partake for medical reasons, so there was no reason for me to drink alone. The pickles were wonderful, as they always are. By the end of the meal we had finished them. Our dinners were delivered fairly quickly. The chicken livers were perfection and the vegetables were delicious. We talked about some of the high points of our relationship, which was fun. At the end of dinner our server (I wished I had asked his name) asked us about dessert and we decided to share a piece of chocolate babke, which he offered to warm up, a lovely touch. It was a huge slice. I cut it in half and he brought two small plates, forks, knives and napkins. It was marvelous! I had never had it warmed. The best New York Deli food. Just expect to drop a minimum of 20 bucks for half a sandwich and soup. If you like deli meat, you've got to try their pastrami. Get a pickle while your at it. On the rye bread, it was just too heavy/buttery. $16.50 (added latke for extra* $2.25) - I thought the matzo ball soup was just okay and quite bland (however, disclaimer: I've never had the dish before so I could just not be a fan in general). Reminiscent of super low sodium chicken noodle soup (if you add noodles - no extra charge), plus two large matzo balls. I was hoping the broth would taste homemade/rich, but it was just okay. $9.95 Overall, the sandwiches are solid, but just not my personal favorite. I update my prior post where the deli was extremely busy and we didn't get to eat there. The gentleman who owns this restaurant is an amazing person and he made it happen that we would be able to experience all their deli! The deli pastrami and roast beef were just perfect! The rye bread was just right. Everything was excellent! Half sour pickles couldn't be better. Same with the pistachio halvah. Everything was exceptional and authentic. I'm sorry to leave a 3 star review. I come to Saul's on the regular and I love eating inside and outside, but the bees/yellowj ackets are out of control outside on the patio. It makes me want to skip eating there for awhile. I didn't see any bait or traps to keep them away from the food or outdoor fans... something. I felt rushed to finish my food and spent most of my meal covering various plates with my hands to keep the bees away. Please please please do something about this nuisance! Your food and staff are always 5 stars!! But the bees made this most recent experience miserable. read more

My wife and I were looking for a sandwich shop while running errands in Berkeley. I've always passed Saul's and kind of dismissed it because of the 3.5 stars. Today, we gave it a try because we could find parking at Crave. We ordered the chicken schnitzel sandwich, the roast beef on sourdough, and a side of coleslaw and potato salad. The sandwiches were nicely packed to take away. We pulled over in the parking lot at St. Mary's and were blown away by the sandwiches. The chicken schnitzel was generously double-stacked and perfectly dressed on the roll. The kitchen got our order wrong. Instead of the roast beef on sourdough, we were given the pastrami on rye. The mistake is forgiven because the sandwich was amazing. We brought home half sandwiches and our daughter confirmed, these sandwiches are "bangers!" What a nice surprise. Thank you, Saul.
