    Latkes & Matzo Ball Soup
    Uni C.

Classic deli comfort done right Saul's Restaurant & Delicatessen really delivers on that old-school deli experience with comforting, well-executed food. I had the matzo ball soup and latkes, and both were exactly what I was hoping for. The matzo ball soup was warm, comforting, and deeply flavorful--the broth was rich without feeling heavy, and the matzo ball itself was soft and perfectly cooked. It felt like true comfort food in a bowl. The latkes were crispy on the outside and tender inside, served hot and nicely seasoned. They paired really well with the traditional toppings and made the whole meal feel complete. The atmosphere is casual but lively, and service was friendly and efficient even when it was busy. It's the kind of place that feels consistent and dependable, whether you're going for a quick meal or a relaxed sit-down. Definitely a great spot if you're craving classic deli comfort food done well.

Service was pleasant. Food was excellent. Ambiance was so comfortable and cozy. We came in around 9am and got seated right away. We got the saul's deli hash, it was really good but started to feel heavy. Started craving vegetables while eating this. Solid order though!! The chicken schnitzel sandwich was so delicious. Crunchy, savory, nutty! I enjoyed the sesame seeds in the chicken schnitzel. We got it with a side of latke and it was crispy and soft. Great place to come for breakfast/brunch!

$14 veggie pita sabiche sandwich (grilled eggplant and eggs) was: pretty solid. A bit pricey for the size though.

I've slept on Bay Area Jewish delis for no real reason. For some context, I regularly frequented a few Jewish delis while living a LA. So Saul's is a first for me in the Bay. I understand it's an institution in Berkeley and has mixed reviews with ownership changes. Saul's gives diner vibes with comfy booths. Our server was really helpful and was good for helping me confirm my order because I was stuck between a number of options. To get a good sampling I ordered a half corned beef sandwich with a side of matzo ball soup. To start we had the loc & latke. The latke was crispy and flavorful but probably could have done without the lox.The soup was fine but the real highlight was the corned beef sandwich- so much satisfaction from biting into a super fresh and tender sandwich. The bf got a turkey Reuben on rye, which was surprisingly impressive. I'd come back if I'm in the area, feeling carnivorous, and craving a hot sammie or Rueben sandwich.

Went here for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Got a small booth inside and ordered some sodas. For food we got the half sandwich (pastrami) with the matzo ball soup and one latke. The matzo ball soup was good, also liked the sandwich, but I did have better pastrami sandwiches before. I think that the bread could have been toasted a bit more. My favorite item was probably the latke. Simple dish, but some very good bites with the two sauces. Staff were friendly and food came out quickly.

Classic Jewish deli and bakery. The staff is very nice, but they did ask us to repeat our order a few times and the sandwich we ordered did not come with the condiments on it we asked for. The matzo ball soup was decent, needed a lot of salt and pepper for my flavor pallet - and it was lacking the necessary chicken unfortunately. The ambiance is reminiscent of a Jewish deli on the East Coast, lots of tables and booths. I like the tall ceilings and the retro lights and the big bar. I'd come back, but there are other places to go.

I've been going to Saul's for years, and I almost exclusively order the corned beef on rye and a cup of matzoh ball soup. It always satisfies that intense craving for a good, Jewish deli sandwich with loads of meat and a good matzoh ball soup! The corned beef is sliced thicker than they do add a lot of other deli say in New York or Los Angeles however I think it's just perfect super flavorful tender delicious and I love it on the Acme rye bread. I really need to try other items on the menu, I just always panic at the last minute and say "corn beef on rye, and a cup of matzoh ball soup".

Service was good, especially Saturday afternoon. Outside was crowded but seating was available. Inside was nearly empty. It's been a long while since I've been to Saul's. I went because a friend mentioned she'd be headed there on the way to grab her mom. I was like...,hmmm, why not it's been a long time! I got seated right away and was looking for their delicious pickles and I wanted liver (sando!). Got both with a latke. Everything was delicious. Service was erratic. Maybe I caught them in between shifts? I know it took others longer to order. Once the food arrived, service was much improved. I swear the pickles use to be free but they're still delish.

Nostalgic, Still Solid, But My "Lox" Missed the Mark It's been a minute since I've been to Saul's, and stepping back in felt like visiting an old friend. The deli vibe is classic Berkeley, cozy booths, busy energy, and that familiar hum of conversation that makes you want to linger. I ordered the Bagels and Lox on an Everything Bagel, and while it looked gorgeous, it wasn't quite lox. There was no salt-cured flavor at all, more like regular salmon; which was a letdown for the price. The texture was buttery and fresh, but the portion felt light; the menu said 2 ounces, and it looked every bit of that (maybe less). The toppings needed a little love. The white onions threw me at first, but they were sweet, so that balanced out. The cucumber slices were too thick and should've been on the side. And the capers? Cute on top until they went rolling everywhere after the first bite. My dining companion ordered the Corned Beef Gretchen, and that's where Saul's shines. It was meaty, tender, and perfectly layered on soft bread. The fries were golden and crisp, absolutely worth adding as a side. Saul's still delivers that neighborhood comfort and nostalgia. I'll definitely be back, but next time I'll skip the "lox" and try something new.

This is the only view of the long wide room that I took without having to edit out too many families. It's a popular place!

Saul's is a long double-wide restaurant with a delicatessen near the front, and both outdoor and indoor seating. At 9:30am on a Sunday (Oct 2025), I was seated quickly indoors with a prompt cup of good strong hot black coffee and a menu. And within minutes i was able to place my order with the attentive staff. With a page-long menu from hash to flatbread to eggs to bagels to challah to salmon and more, I was set on shakshouka: a poached egg deep in thick rich steaming savory seasoned cumin-laced tomato sauce, with sour cream and spicy deep-green zhoug cilantro-paste, and of course fresh hot pita. It was a deep dive into Levant flavors. A lovely satisfying breakfast. Staff were friendly and service was quick. Street parking was not diccicult to find nearby.

This place has been here forever and has always been a fun place to eat. I got the falafel platter for $18 and it was good. Nothing awesome but I would eat again. The highlight was the freshly baked pita. The service was good.

Saul's is a classic Jewish diner in Berkeley that carries all the traditional favorites like Lox & bagels, Reuben Sandwiches, matzo, and a variety of brunch style items. The staff was extremely nice and I enjoyed interacting with them. I ended up ordering the Reuben, half corned beef and half pastrami. They gave a generous portion of meat and all around great quality Reuben. I preferred the corned beef over the pastrami but both with good. Look forward to coming back to try the other food items.

Several sauces to use with our sandwiches.

We have loved Saul's for years. We ordered several sandwiches with the youngest of our group ordering pancakes, which she enjoyed eating. Two of our group ordered the half sandwich and soup. There were at least 5 soup options and both individuas ordered matzoball soup. The matzo ball reminded me of the dumplings I make for chicken and dumplings.. The broth was not as rich as I remember, but the matzoball was delicious, soft and fluffy. The half sandwiches were roast beef on sourdough bread and the other was pastrami on rye. The two individuals who ordered a whole pastrami sandwich had theirs on sourdough bread and one had their bread toasted. I want to mention our waiters, who were fantastic and so helpful! They added to the great experience we had at Saul's. As our meal came to an end, we bought the chocolate covered coconut macaroons. Some of the edges were crispy. The macaroons were dipped in chocolate which takes the macaroons to another level of deliciousness. Having said that, the previous way the macaroons were made were bigger and the outside of the macaroons were crispier. What a great way to end a meal!! We will be back!!

Ask the Community - Saul's Restaurant & Delicatessen

I thought the parklet outside of Saul's is a public parklet, but it seems to be taken over by Saul's (menus on tables, etc). Is this so?

Hi Gail-Thanks for inquiring. There are 2 areas in front of Saul's'; 1 is exclusive to Saul's, 1 is a public parklette. ANYONE IS WELCOME TO SIT IN THE PUBLIC PARKLETTE AT ANYTIME, provided they are not smoking, being abusive or otherwise violating…

Does Sauls offer sandwiches at dinner time!?

Yes and their sandwiches I've had are delicious.

    Is there outdoor seating?

Yes they have limited outdoor seating.

    Do they offer new pickkes?

No, same as the ones that have been on the menu I believe.

    Do they offer new pickles?

    They charge for pickles

    How is the parking situation?

There's a small lot in front that's usually full but you can drive further in and pull over next to the sidewalk for quick pickups, that's my go-to option.

    Have they reopened?

    Reopened for inside dining!

Do they serve or sell chocolate Babka? How is it?

Yes they do! I've had it once and it was very dry unfortunately, could be a one-off.

Is the pastrami similar to Katz in NYC?

Nope. It's good (and occasionally it can be on the too salty side) but nowhere near as good as Katz's.

    Is it kosher?

    No. It is kosher style.

The workers and the owner were all very kind and welcoming. I got there a little after they opened in the morning. As for the food, I ordered the kimchi fried rice along with the chicken and croffle. The fried chicken tasted a bit interesting. I'm not sure if the frying temperature was off or if it had something to do with the condition of the oil, but the texture of the breading wasn't quite right. I used to work at a fried chicken shop in Korea, so it was a texture I recognized--the coating was fully cooked and wasn't necessarily soggy, but there was no real crunch. Instead of being crispy, the breading was soft and kind of gave way when you bit into it. Unfortunately, I couldn't continue eating it. I'd give the chicken a 2/5. As for the kimchi fried rice, I liked the addition of cilantro and beets, which gave it a refreshing touch. My only issue was that the kimchi itself was way too sour for kimchi fried rice. I don't mind fermented or sour kimchi, but in this case, the sourness overpowered the rest of the dish. Overall, the cafe itself is cute and the people working there were genuinely very kind. I just wish the food had been a little better, especially the fried chicken. Will be back next time to try out the coffee!! It is a cafe after all.

My friend who rarely insists on eating at specific places insisted we come, a previous girlfriend was in the food industry and they have this place bookmarked for awhile. They described it as "healthy california food". We came on a Friday morning around 9:20 am and it was pretty crowded. You can't park right in front but there was plenty of street parking on the weekdays. Inside, its intimate and cozy and there is also a nice seating area outside with lots of dog-owners hanging out. Everything we had was great quality with choice ingredients where you could actually taste the difference. Buttermilk Biscuit Sandwich: herb butter, roasted seasonal vegetables and onions, soft-cooked egg, and greens. Surprisingly filling, we were trying to share a bunch of little bites but ended up getting one each of these. It's fine as a stand alone mini breakfast! Frittata: pastured eggs, assorted vegetables, caramelized onions. WAY too good! we all love this one. Herb-Dijon Biscuit: Excellent savory biscuit, you can taste the high quality butter used.

Cali Alley is one of my go-to spots... I'm constantly trying to convince people to meet me there…read morefor lunch, or telling them to just DoorDash it because it's that good. It's also one of those places that makes you want to stay. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and generous. Every time I come here, I tell myself I'll pace myself... and every time I fail because it's just that good. The burgers are loaded and perfectly balanced, the fries are always crisp (never soggy, which is rare), and everything tastes high-quality and made to order. You have to try the chicken and waffles. The waffle batter tastes homemade and the butter takes it to another level... it's one of those dishes you keep thinking about after. I'll even DoorDash it all the way to Jingletown. The patio setup is really well done... there's a mix of larger tables for groups and higher bar-style seating for smaller hangs. The wooden furniture and cushioned benches make it comfortable, and they've got heaters for colder days and umbrellas when it's sunny, so you can usually pick your ideal spot. You order at the window and then just hang out while you wait... it's a relaxed flow and the food comes out pretty quickly. The staff are always kind and welcoming, and the whole place has a relaxed, homey vibe with really good music. Highly recommend... just come hungry.

The food always looked really good, but for whatever reason I always ended up ordering from somewhere else. Well, I finally did it. I finally ordered from Cali Alley, and all I have to say is, why did I wait so darn long? Door Dash was having a 2-for-1 deal on the Cali Alley Burger, so I ordered one of those (and got another for free) , as well as on the small mac and cheese, so I ended up with two of those as well. I got fries as he side for the burgers and saved the second burger and mac and cheese for the next day. I also bought a small side of veggie fried rice for lunch later in the week. OK, let's start with the fries ... wow. Super crispy. Don't know what they do to them, but I think I almost ate all the fries that came with one of the burgers before I even touched the burger. The fries seemed to have a coating like some fries do to make them extra crispy on the outside. Whatever it was, it made them so good, I couldn't stop eating them. I was almost too full for the burger. But who are we kidding? If there is one thing I am good at, it is eating more than I should. The burger, which is described on Door Dash as "char grilled, fresh ground brisket and short rib burger, served on a toasted brioche fun with crisp lettuce, tomato onion marmalade and garlic aioli" was thick and incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop eating that, either. It was that good. I ordered it medium, and it was pretty pink, but it was sooooooo flavorful, and all the toppings worked well together. I didn't get any cheese on it because I wanted to try to burger by itself and not mask it with cheese. I might try adding cheese next time, but honestly the burger is so good, I almost wouldn't want to cover up its flavor with cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. When you order on Door Dash, you can opt to have them include a small side of their chocolate-chipotle bbq sauce, and I highly recommend that you get it. It's a really interesting flavor and is good for dipping the fries in. I didn't try putting it on the burger, but that might be good, too. The mac and cheese was OK. It's important to note that I enjoyed the flavor but it is more of an eggy consistency than a saucy mac and cheese if that makes sense. It has a nice kick of black pepper, which I liked, though. The vegetarian fried rice was also fine but could have used a little salt. All that to say, don't be like me and procrastinate, get the Cali Alley Burger and fries ASAP.
