Needed some gravel during an excavation job I was doing and I found Saunders Landscape Supply online the night before. I originally wanted just pickup what I needed, but was informed they only sell by the ton. The good news is that they price delivery into their cost already and deliver to you. I called at around 10:30 in the morning expecting them to tell me the earliest they could make it was the following day, but thankfully enough they were able to make it the same day. So I ordered one ton of gravel over the phone and by 12:30 to 1:00 in the afternoon they came and made the delivery. Everything worked out much better than expected and I'll definitely be calling them whenever I need gravel (I do several excavations per year). Their prices are really good too considering they deliver to you. Definitely beats buying by the bag at a store. read more

I ordered $375 of Saunders "color -enhanced black mulch" that turned to a faded brown color light brown color in 2 days in spite of their add statingper their ad stating "Our high-quality color-enhanced mulch.... designed to hold its color for an entire season. We have been over the years a customer of this company to purchase firewood, but after our most recent experience we have decided to explore the market for other suppliers. While they delivered the correct quantity of wood at the scheduled date and in the specified location, we found the quality of the firewood to be somewhat poor in terms of the proportion of hardwood in the mix. It was sufficiently aged. We were disappointed by the fact that within the pile of wood that was dumped on our driveway, there was a large quantity of chips, bark, unusable wood, and other detritus. For one cord of wood, we filled three large lawn refuse bags of junk and two more of what perhaps can be used as kindling. More than any of this, we were sent an email from the company following our purchase, requesting us to give them a top rating on the stated basis that this would be helpful for their business. I am old enough to recall a time when small businesses such as this, which we otherwise would be happy to support, would endeavor to earn customer satisfaction and fidelity. Much as one of in my generation would never have dreamed of asking a teacher to give me an "A" solely because it would help my GPA, I was shocked by this presumptuous request, and after this experience, henceforth I shall look to their competitors to see if they can do better. read more

I was concerned ordering firewood seeing all the negative reviews on here. I had no issues. Firewood was delivered on time and quality is fine for the price. It is seasoned mixed wood that burns just fine, not dirty. Received a call before and during delivery which was good. Everything was as described and received what was expected. Disappointing. A large bulk order of mulch arrived with mixed woods--some in chunks. I suspect mulch was from the winter as it was already decaying and had no fresh shredded smell. Unfortunately, landscapers already spread most of it before I could refuse. I called Saunders and their response was that is the way it is. While I expected Saunders' mulch to be less than top quality because of the price and free delivery, it should be better than the mulch you get from the Fairfax County Recycle Depot for free. About 5 yrs ago I ordered top soil from this company...so much clay, it was fill dirt, not topsoil. My garden beds still have hard clay rocks, despite years of adding clay breaker, mulch, and other soil amendments. I decided I would order straight compost to layer over all the beds 3-4" deep. And mulch to top that, and sand to prepare stepping stone pathways. Overall, it was around 10 cu yds of stuff. Despite the negative quality experience of the previous experience with this company, I placed an order with them because the delivery is free. I immediately got a call back from a woman that was a ghetto over the phone as can be. She wanted to know what delivery instructions. "Deliver on the tarp/bag on the street" meant. Then she insisted with an attitude, "Uh uh...we're a driveway only delivery company!" I informed her that the last order was dropped on a tarp curbside on the street. She questioned whether I had a driveway. Yes, but that's too much to put in my driveway, I'd like it delivered curbside like before. She refused, said it's their policy they deli er to driveway only. Then she canceled almost $800 worth of supplies. This employee is bad for business. Btw...does the company not deliver to people who live in neighborhoods with street parking only, or driveways down an ally that a truck can't access? This is ridiculous. All spring summer and fall people throughout the neighborhood have truckloads of dirt, gravel, or mulch delivered on tarps on the street. Either they need new policies or they need new employees. Choose them because their minimum delivery for topsoil was only 3 yards, which me the requirement of my medium size job. The order and delivery went very smooth and was easy. At time of delivery the soil/compost mixture looked very good. However, when I went to put it down it was heavily contaminated with rock - much of the rock was the small fill chips so they were NOT screened out by the drum I used to spread the soil. Plus I found lots of small plastic fragments mixed in - lots of very tiny pieces. Not sure if they did not clean out the truck from the last stone delivery or the storage yard is just full of stone. Either way their soil is not recommended for top dressing. I would have been better off buying individual bags of "clean" dirt than using this bulk soil company. Even my lawn mowing company was surprised by how much rock was mixed into the "top dressing soil ". My recommendation - skip this place for soil unless you are just looking for fill dirt. read more

It is not screened topsoil!!!! I have found many rocks many over 4 inches and some as big as 6 in. I suspect that around 40% of this whole load is fill dirt and not the screened organic topsoil that I ordered. I couldn't even begin to count how many lumps is large as the one in my hand which are 100% clay are inside this load. For the price I paid for this load it was not worth it. read more

Their mulch products and deliveries are great but their topsoil is for the most part garbage so I'm Giving them two stars. I ordered mulch and "organic topsoil" at the same time thinking it'd be better as a first time customer of theirs. Mulch came with no issue and looks to be good quality. The topsoil is supposed to be prescreened as advertised to 3/4 inch however my soil came with rocks, roots, small pierces of plastic and hard clumps the size of basketballs. When I called to complain, she basically said it was better than Home Depot or Lowes and that the weather is the main reason for the clumping however I don't see how it was that bad or not given the option to deliver later with better weather. I've spent hours trying to sift through the soil to make it useable for the lawn but is overall I'm now stuck with a couple 1000 pounds of garbage dirt. Absolutely awful experience with Saunders. Ordered 6 tons of 57 Bluestone Gravel and received pretty much what are millings. When I called, they told me to email a specific email, so I emailed the company and was told that this is the industry standard, which is complete BS bc this is my third order with Saunders and the other two orders were not this poor quality. It seems to be the case if you read several reviews here, you can spin the dice and get lucky but if something goes wrong - this company will not stand behind their product or service which is a shame because I really did like the company - sadly, I cannot support a company that does not stand behind their product, especially when there are several alternatives in the area. Specifically requested that compost be dumped next to mulch piles in yard two days after order. I tried to be home but I was given no window as to when driver would arrive. Received call from driver, who said he was new, and was told that he could not put the compost in the yard without me signing a waiver. He said he would call his boss and his boss would call me. No call. I get home 30 min later and 5 cu yards of compost is in my driveway, the most inconvenient location possible. I was not told this would happen. I am very upset, I cannot get to my garage because my driveway is on a hill, and my husband is absolutely livid. Nobody has reached out to us. Honestly, this was not worth it and I would not recommend this company, they have NO respect for people's property, just take a look at the other reviews. I ordered topsoil and they wanted to deliver fill dirt bunch of rocks and clay. I called the company and the lady said that that is top soil that the top soil you buy at your local HD or Lowe's is compost not topsoil and that I had two options "take the soil or a 150.00 will be charge for delivery" so I refuse the delivery since the product was not to my satisfaction. I understand that they had to make a trip and was willing to pay the 150 but instead the charge me for the full 3 cubic yards. TERRIBLE PRODUCT AND CUSTOMER SERVICE One of the worst experiences I've ever had from the COMPLETE GARBAGE product to horrendous customer service. Don Saunders will defend his garbage product until the end rather than admit it is inferior and apologize. To the point of breaking down cubic yards of solid mulch into liquid gallons which obviously does not make sense. Don thinks it is acceptable to have literal garbage in your mulch as long as it 'fits into a 1 gallon container.' Saunder's sold me 7 yards of double shredded mulch that was full of trash including bottle caps, candy wrappers, trash bag pieces, magnolia/sweet gum seed pods, and pieces of wood 8"+ in length. Saunder's completely misrepresents their product. At best, their 'double shredded hardwood mulch' is single shredded and full of trash. Save your money and get the free mulch from the Fairfax County transfer stations. Complete garbage mulch. Shame on you Don Saunders. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COST! Junk firewood: We have ordered loads of mulch and topsoil from Saunders Landscape Supply in Virginia every year for the last five years and they have always delivered top quality stuff. So when we ordered firewood in September 2022 we expected the same. And we were shocked when the delivery truck tipped out a cord of "seasoned firewood." It was a full cord, but nearly all dreck. Most of it was 3 to 4 years old and starting to deteriorate. Worse, after we had picked through the "seasoned" wood we were left with five and one-half cartloads of debris to sweep up. From the sheer volume of debris mixed in with the firewood I can only assume Saunders used a bucket loader to scoop up a pile of junk wood. See attached photos. Ordered 4 yards of topsoil from Saunders for some minor grading and lawn dressing. The delivered topsoil was full of large lumps of clay that we're nearly impossible to break, making the whole pile virtually unusable. I ended up dumping most of this non-topsoil off the corner of my property. The small portion that I did use had to be supplemented with bags of lawn soil and manure compost to get it to resemble topsoil. When I contacted them about it they asked me to send a photo, which I did. I never heard another word from them. Totally unacceptable and never again. The photo doesn't really show that the clay lumps permeate the entire pile, but they did. read more

This was the worst experience in my life, I simply wanted to order compost. My plan was to order 20 yards of compost through the website and I also wanted to order some gravel as well but I had question about pricing for the gravel. I called the company, a person named Crystal answered the phone, and I asked a question about the pricing for the gravel. I wanted to understand why it was listed on their website for &211.99 per ton while all other companies I checked sell theirs for around $40 per ton. Crystal replied "if you do not like the price, go somewhere else" and hung up the phone! Just like that, without explanation! I realized she was not a good person but I had no time to deal with it, so I just ordered 20 yards of compost through through the website and answered their question about "when and where to deliver the product". I wrote "the front of the house, and we would like to have before noon". I then got a phone call from a private #. I ignored it at first, I assumed it was a telemarketer. Then again, again and again. I had to pick up the phone and this person, Crystal, was on the phone screaming that they can't deliver it before noon. She said, delivery will be anytime between 8am - 4pm. I told her, I just put that note as a comment in the delivery instructions at checkout. I asked her, why she was yelling? She then said she was cancelling my order. So I am asking the owner of this company, why do you allow this person to take orders and thus represent your company? Staff who deal with customers are normally expected to treat the customer with respect and professionalism. That's your business but a customer should never have to face this kind of hostile, unprofessional service. I went somewhere else and I ordered my gravel for $40 per ton and compost for $29 per yard, and had a wonderful experience. read more

DO NOT ORDER WOOD from Saunders! I ordered over $500 worth of wood that was delivered yesterday (1 1/2 cords). In addition to the wood, they dumped enough dirt, debris and small wood chips to fill NINE 50-gallon garbage cans of debris that I had to haul it away--taking more than 3 hours in addition to the 4 hours of stacking. I have been ordering wood in the DMV since 2005 and have never had anything close to this amount to dirt and debris included in my wood delivery. I complained and asked for some token rebate and they basically told me to go pound sand with some BS mumbo jumbo. Should have read reviews earlier. Warnings about poor quality materials over the years are accurate. I've ordered gravel, palletized stone, top soil, river rock and stone dust over time. Every business deserves a mulligan, maybe two. Saunders has delivered on time and reliably. Mostly however, the material was barely adequate, of inconsistent quality, and usually required extra work and time to finish a project. The last delivery of stone dust, that was basically sand, was the last straw. Customer service was utterly dismissive. 6 tons of sand on my driveway became my problem, not because it wasn't so poor as to be unusable, but because it was "VDOT standard," as if my project cared or I was backfilling a highway ramp. I don't know about their mulch and wood products but definitely go elsewhere for anything else. read more

Saunders is super easy to work with and they communicate really well. I setup my order online and received prompt confirmation via email that day and again a day or so prior to delivery. The day of delivery, the driver called to give an estimate on the delivery time and he was spot on for the time and accuracy of delivery location in my driveway. The mulch was just as expected. I ordered 20 yards of mulch from Saunders Landscape Supply this Fall and, honestly, this is the best double-shredded hardwood mulch I've ever seen. The landscaping company working on my property was also impressed -- and they were surprised at the affordable price. In addition, over the years I've found the entire customer experience with Saunders to be first-rate. They have a GREAT website that is easy to navigate and use for placing orders (you even get to pick your delivery date from a calendar), deliveries are free, and the truck drivers are courteous and precise about following dumping directions. And, as I said, the quality of their product is also excellent. The only other delivery I've had from them was topsoil, which was also good. I made three purchases from Saunders in the last couple of months: two of gravel and one of organic soil. The first two went well, as expected. The last one was terrible. In all cases the delivery drivers were courteous and helpful. I will not ever purchase for Saunders because the product was not as advertised, the delivery was late by a day, and the customer service was awful.  First, the problem with organic soil: it bore no resemblance with the product depicted on their website. What I got was composed of mostly large chunks of clay coated with the organic matter. Out of a load of 18 cubic yards, about half of those chunks were 8" to 12". (I have the pictures to prove it). As a result, a third to half the load was not usable, and it took my crew extra effort to break those chunks into usable smaller chunks. Overall, the product would have been more suitable for crude backfill. Given that I had two pallets of sod to lay down without delay, I had no choice but to use what I had. I was stuck with that crappy product. My guys painstakingly picked and chose the best there was, causing additional hours of work on my end. That alone should warranted a complete refund. Second, I got no notification whatsoever from Saunders that my delivery would be late by a day, or by any time period at all. Complete radio silence. In fact, I didn't receive any notification of when the soil would be delivered even on the day that it was delivered. They had no clue, and volunteered no information. Meanwhile I had to keep a crew on hand to ensure we'd be ready to continue the job as soon as the soil arrived (day laborers don't stick around if they are not earning any wages, and sod is a perishable product). Perhaps the worst part of the experience was the absolute lack of customer service that Saunders should have provided. The only responses I got when I decided to try their chat line on their Facebook page were "Too many variables involved. When making 250 plus deliveries a day it is almost impossible to commit to a time." or "Once again we will do our best". For a company that has been in business more than 10 years, can predict its "busiest season," and is in the business of making more than 200 deliveries a day, this level of disorganization and dismal logistics (which cost me money), as well as poor customer service is inexcusable. Saunders should have offered to reimburse me at least a meaningful portion of my purchase (no less than 30%), but they did not. So, my recommendation to other folks looking for organic soil is to stay away from Saunders, and to look elsewhere.  jc read more

Absolutely disappointed the receptionist act as though she was bothered by simple questions asked by me! She had absolutely no customer service skills at all she definetly didn't know much about the products they sell her knowledge and response was like talking to a rock. I assumed she was having a bad day as we all do at times but I come to realize she's like that every time you call. Very dry and extremely un attentive to potential customers I decided to purchase my pool masonry stone through mulch and stone fast and extremely knowledgeable about the product and what I need. I ordered their organic top soil. Their description of their organic top soil is that it is sifted to 3/4 of an inch to remove large debris like rocks and sticks. But there may still be some soil clumping. I received a mix of clay, mulch, manure, and lots of rocks! I have contacted them with these details and pics. The description on their site as well as my invoice/receipt doesn't mention having 1% 2% 5% or any % of rocks mixed in. Their response was im sorry that you are not satisfied, try somewhere else next time. I am filing a law suit in order to remove the' who knows ' of how many rocks which are now on my lawn from the 4 yards of 'organic top soil' that was dumped on my property. DON is the manager at the maryland location. I was sent an email response which translated from business bullshit words, to im sorry for your bad experience, thank you for your feedback and thanks for the $300 Don't even try them once!
