Tybee Island is around 30 minutes away in a cozy little coastal town. The rate to go in the lighthouse covers the lighthouse and their museum. We only had time for the lighthouse. The price is $12 for adults and $10 for children. Children 5 and under are free. I was surprised they allow children of all ages. Normally there is a height restriction. My youngest (4) was thrilled because he's always wanted to join on our family tradition but was too short or young. He did a excellent job along with our (8) year old and my husband walking up the 178 steps. This is the tallest lighthouse in Georgia and the climb is fairly easy in my opinion. There is a break at every 25 steps where you can look out a window or just take a breath and let people pass if needed. The view from above is beautiful. You can see the water. There is no staff member at the top and the staff do not spend long explaining the lighthouse but there are signs to read. Overall it was a good experience and it's a beautiful lighthouse. Called Tybee Turtle Transit because we were stranded thinking they'd be a good alternative, but they didn't answer the phone after three calls. After sitting on the bench in front of a gas station for awhile they eventually called me back, and the bloke who answered couldn't even say, "Tybee Turtle Transit" without getting tongue tied. I asked him the fair for two people from Tybee to Savannah and he said, "$55." I replied "Oh..." a little dejected because it was nearly double what I would have to pay on Uber or Lyft if I could get ride coverage. I went to discuss it with my partner to see if she still wanted to do it. And before she could answer TYBEE TURTLE TRANSIT HUNG UP ON ME. Not Cheap. Not Friendly. Not worth your Time nor Money.

We did the sunset tour on a high tide and saw bird rockeries, dauphins riding in our boat wake. The oyster nursery was quite educational, and shucking and eating live oysters on the way back to the dock at the Crap Shack ended a perfect adventure. Our trip was filled with a lot of rain, but we were so thankful to have a morning like this. The boat ride was magical. Captain Seth told us all about the area, the community, the wildlife and more. We enjoyed fresh pastries before heading further out. We got to explore a sandbar filled with pelicans and other majestic birds. We got to see dolphins---something Seth kept us out longer to make sure we got to experience. He dropped us off closer to a coffee shop and gave us tips on what to explore on Tybee. We were so thankful for this portion of our trip. I cannot suggest this enough. We were to glad we included this in our 3 day itinerary.

The tour was very informative and it was cool that we got to catch wildlife in the jetty (catch and release folks, calm down). They had nets and shovels available for everyone and the good Doc would tell you all about what you found...everyone put their findings in containers for easy viewing and learning. My only complaint was that it seemed to last FOREVER...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, my kids were ready to be done after about an hour. I would say the tour lasted 2-2.5 hours and it was pretty hot they day we went. So, needless to say, my kids were ready to swim.

Dr. Joe was very helpful in communicating about plans including where to go, what to bring, and what to wear to make the experience very smooth. Wear water shoes if you have a pair and there are public rest rooms at the beach where you meet. Dr. Joe also provided us options for what to do when the weather for the next morning was looking questionable. Luckily, the weather held and we were able to explore the beach. He brought all of the equipment needed to catch and explore. We found a number of animals including gray starfish (which are not usually present in this area), blue crabs, long-wristed hermit crabs, ghost shrimp, and pompano fish. Part of the fun is that you never know what you're going to find! Dr. Joe answered questions about all of the animals we found and his experience as a teacher really shows. A great time including for adult nature lovers! We'd love to see what we find next time on a future trip.
