Was a regular here for awhile before I started back on my weight-loss journey. I ordered ahead on the website and my food was ready to go when I went to pick-up. They have no seating inside, so prepare to take your food to go. I love the variety of the empanadas, my favorite being the chicken pot pie, samosa, picadillo, pork belly, and some of the past specials. The place is small and it's basically more of a take out only due to space! As for food, my partner and I ordered the empanadas. We got the Mac n cheese, philly cheese steak, jambalaya (limited time only) and the spinach and feta. Out of the four, we topped philly cheese steak and jambalaya as our highest rating! It definitely was filling! The Mac and spinach/feta was alright, nothing spectacular. Each empanada is prolly $5 ea. You can honestly get full with 1-2. Lastly, we had the ube horchata. It was ok. Nothing great or bad about it. It had the purple color, but the taste was more horchata than ube! If you want something quick and filling, def get an empanada or two. Run don't walk! The birria empanadas on their special menu is a MUST try! I tried their birria and Argentinian beef empanadas. Both were delicious! I tried their chimichurri , avocado cream, and spicy sriracha mayo sauces to go with the empanadas. The sauces really add to the empanadas and bring them to the next level. Everything tasted fresh and hot! Perfect for a cold winter day. The empanadas crust was crusty and cooked perfectly. I was pretty full after two empanadas. My husband got their hot Cheetos elotes. Really good variety to choose from and a bit pricey when you think of the size of the dinner and dessert empanadas. But those pastry filled treats are deceivingly filling and satisfying, so much so that you'll eat the buttery crusty ends! Another interesting thing is that they have unique sauces to pair with your empanadas - that's just great because I'm Mr. Sauce and Condiment guy at home (with all of my different bottles of sauces). I would definitely get two dinner empanadas and two dessert empanadas (one to eat there and the other to bring home - to eat late at night). I will admit that not all of the empanadas are a hit but man oh man if you get the pork belly you've been blessed! My reasoning for a 4 instead of a 5 is that I've had other empanadas from here that weren't great, but the ones that are good are really good! I went to their newer, 2nd location in Carol Stream yesterday. It's in a little office building, so don't expect a typical restaurant setting. I ordered ahead online & got the pork belly empanada, Mac & cheese (!), and the limited time dessert empanadas apple pie and sweet potato. All were sooo good. The dessert ones reminded me of the types of pies you'd get at McD's. They also can sell you packs of them for your freezer to bake at home (3 savory or 4 dessert). Philipino empanadas were something I never tried before and had to give a shot. Coming to this store it was small. Very much a takeout type of location. It makes sense for empanadas l, the perfect to go snacks. The empanadas here are so large. Much more filling than I initially thought. A good variety of sauces too. The only sauce that is truly has acquire taste is the blackberry and ginger sauce. Taste unique but not for everyone. The pork belly one is easily my favorite. Curry had a strong flavor for people that like a punch(I would enjoy that last). They also have tradition empanadas for people who know what they like. These empanadas are amazing! We ordered 4 empanadas that were ready in 2 minutes literally. We ate them somewhere else as you can't eat them there. We ordered Chicken Curry, Pork Belly, Filipino Beef which is an "special" and finally the guava and cheese which is a Cuban classic so we went with that. All of them super delicious, really crispy, a lot of flavor in the crust. The fillings were perfect on themselves and the chimichurri and spicy chimichurri also very fresh. What to say? I placed an order online and it was just about ready when I arrived (I was slightly early). I was surprised that there are no tables to dine in and this place is carry out/delivery only. I was originally surprised by how much the empanadas are (~$4.50-$5.50 each) but they are larger than your standard empanada. I ordered the spinach and chicken pot pie empanadas. I also had the curry chicken rice bowl. I realized that you can get a free agua fresca for checking in. I sipped on the mandarin aqua fresca while I waited for my food and I found it to be refreshing but not too sweet. Both empanadas were good but I preferred the spinach empanada over the chicken pot pie one. They were both good by themselves but also good with the avocado sauce. I was actually stuffed from the empanadas alone but I took a few bites of the curry chicken rice bowl and it was pretty tasty. I am so incredibly upset with my experience today. Yesterday (Thursday), I placed an order for a curbside pickup for Friday at 11:30 AM. I received two text messages confirming my order and instructions to either text or click on a link to let them know when I've arrived. I arrived early, at 11:14 AM, and chose to click on the link. I didn't expect my food to be ready 15 minutes early, but I figured that at least they knew I was there, and if they happen to bring my food out before 11:30 AM, then great. Well, that did not happen. Fine, at least I'll get my food at 11:30 AM, right? Wrong. I waited and waited and was starting to really get annoyed. I chose curbside pick up so that I wouldn't have to unbuckle and drag my baby inside with me, but there I was having to do just that when at 11:43 AM, I still hadn't gotten my food! Needless to say, I was pretty livid. When I walked in, the lady asked how she could help. It was pretty clear that I was annoyed, especially since my reply was, "I've been waiting outside for my food." She asked me for the name on the order and said that they were still waiting for one empanada. I don't understand why you're still waiting for one empanada if it is now 14-15 minutes after my specified pickup time! If I wanted to pickup at 11:45 AM, I would have specified that! I question whether she would have gone to check on my order if I hadn't walked into the store. Anyway, she handed me the bag, not one apology or "sorry for the wait" or "thanks for waiting." Loved the spinach empanada and cocoa cookies best. The ube crinkles were good but too sweet for my personal taste. Other than that, fast service and the young girl at the counter was very polite. They just celebrated three years and the success is well deserved. Every time I'm in there the lady at the counter is so nice and a ray of sunshine. That's just the service! The empanadas are cooked perfectly. Quality is always top notch and don'tWorry that it is eight to go please. The food maintains its quality even on the short rides home and longer ones. Tonight my wife and I tried Savory Crust through Dwell Social for the first time. Although we have had terrible luck ordering Empanadas before (terrible crust, dry fillings) in other places, we decided to try this place. To say we were thrilled is to be an understatement. The pastry was flakey and the fillings outstanding. We tried the Porkbelly, Philly Cheesesteak, Bacon, and Chicken Pot Pie. All were great and next time we will go directly to their store and try others including their Apple Pie. I have now added this location to my list of go to places which has been extremely limited due to pandemic. I selected a chicken curry empanada and along with my rice bowl purchase, I met the $15 minimum for a free empanada on Tuesday. The freebie this Tuesday was a bacon and mozzarella cheese delight. They really should rename the place "Buttery Crust" because in my mind, it's the buttery taste of the empanada crust that makes them soooo savory. Yup, waited 2 years to come back and man, I forgot how good this place this. This time we were on a different mission: rice bowls! We ordered ahead of time so it was ready when we arrived. I had the Asian sesame pork and partner had the bulgogi beef. Both bowls came with a good portion of marinated meat, white rice, jicama slaw and a cute lil dumpling. The meats were pretty tender and marinated well. I wish the rice was more moist but at least they gave us a healthy portion. For $10 each it's definitely a great value. We shared an empanada as well and we left feeling ridiculously stuffed. TIP: If you want to add more pizzazz to your rice bowl, order one of their sauces and go to town. A fresh face to the Morton Grove restaurant scene, Savory Crust truly lives up to its name. Savory Crust is a Filipino empanada restaurant crafting a modern spin on the traditional Spanish fare. Mom and I went there a few weeks ago and were immediately blown away by their menu. Each empanada description was mouthwatering. The ingredients to these golden bundles of joy are both unique and gourmet. Trust me; the pictures alone don't do them justice. Just go. Like, right now. Seriously. My mom ordered the Argentinian beef and I had the Pot Roast. My mom seemed to enjoy her selection. As for mine, the Pot Roast, was scrumptious. The meat was slow roasted, juicy, and spiced to perfection. Just look at the cross section photo of my Pot Roast. One look and you'll want to try this bad boy. I paired my Pot Roast empanada with the Avocado cilantro lime sauce. It was truly a match made in heaven. As I had mentioned, the empanadas are gourmet quality. That being said, gourmet can command a high price tag. I paid nearly $6 for one empanada! This does not include the cost of your drink. One could fill you up, but depending on your appetite, the size of their empanadas might just be a hefty snack. For me, a single $6 empanada is not substantial enough to be a full meal. Savory Crust is going to have to either bring down the price or increase the size of their empanadas to justify charging $6 per piece. This, in addition to a small dining space, is what compelled me to rate Savory Crust at a 4 out of 5. They're no doubt very good empanadas. Expensive, but good. read more

I needed a staff appreciation dinner catered for one of our schools for approximately 60 people.  I always look for small businesses to support that are "in" OR "close" to our town of West Chicago.  I heard about Savory Crusts, read their reviews and saw them highlighted on NBC news and felt this would be a good place to try.  I am so glad I did!  From the first phone call to inquire about catering, to the delivery of the order, all interactions were very professional, friendly and extremely helpful. The meals were packaged in their own little cardboard lunchbox, with each item individually wrapped.  There were even gluten free options available. Oh my empanada! My first adventure in to the Savory Crust was to pick up a few dessert empanadas for an after dinner indulgence. I got one of each of what was available that day for $3 a pop: Nutella and banana, guava and cheese, and UBE! Nutella and banana is always a winning combo, and this was the perfect sweet bite together. I'm not a huge fan of guava, but pairing it with cheese feels ooey-gooey right; the flavors just weren't for me. Can we just talk about that ube now??! This is, by far, my #1 recommendation to try here (even above the savory ones I tasted). It's purple yam mixed with coconut shreds and so comforting in that buttery, flaky crust. I'm wild for ube! And it's so much fun to say. Ube, ube, ube! My second excursion in was to test out those savory flavors for a weekday lunch! Pork belly had been recommended to me, so that was my pick. It's a premium empanada, so it's $5.50 vs. $4.50. The meat was juicy and fatty, and the crust was just as buttery and flaky as I remembered. I just wished it was served a little hotter. You get your pick of a sauce with each empanada, so I chose avocado cilantro lime, which was tasty and creamy. On the way out, I decided to grab an empanada to go. It was a debate between the pot roast and lobster (maybe a Lent special, since it's not on the regular menu?), but when I saw that piping hot tray of fresh cheese and ham empanadas come out of the oven, all bets were off, and I left with a piping hot ham one with chimichurri sauce. Geri, who I think is the manager and/or owner, was helping to pack up the to go orders, since a busy lunch crowd was lined up, and she warned me not to burn my face off on the fresh-out-of-the-oven treat. I bookmarked Savory Crust - Gourmet Empanadas, what I didn't realize is it's 1/4 mile from my L.A. Fitness. The restaurant is very clean, but has very limited seating w/one table w/4 seats and a barstool counter at the window storefront w/5 seats I ordered 2 empanadas. One was smoked applewood bacon & mozzarella cheese for $4.50. I mean who doesn't like bacon? The other one was from their gourmet selection for $5.50, Argentinian Beef w/green olives, red peppers, potatoes, onions & spices. This was a very nice blend of beef, vegetables and spices. The flavors were further enhanced be the hot Chimichurri sauce. Each empanada comes w/1 sauce. I got the Hot Chimichurri - olive oil, parsley, cilantro, hot red peppers & cumin. Super happy to have stumbled upon this empanada joint. What's great about this place is that they have other entree options. I chose the savory spinach empanada along with their sweet guava empanada. The size of the empanadas were perfect -- not too big and not too small. Spinach one had the right balance of cheese. Guava sounded too good to pass up which is why I got it. Make sure you ask about what sauce goes best with your savory empanada. Otherwise, go on and choose one based on what you're craving. The empanadas are so good, but in retrospect more of an appetizer than the entrée I forced it to be. The chicken curry and picadillo ones were my favorite.
