The food and service at Savory Grill is amazing!

awful. i have been here three or four times now, and i have never had a good meal. this place does excellent plating presentation and that is about it. i suspect that a lot of these dishes go onto the menu without anyone ever tasting them first. for the prices they charge, you aren't getting anywhere near your money's worth. the interior is lame. i think they're going for charming, but i think it looks cheap. and they have you listening to 70s rock. not appropriate. i want fine music with my fine dining, thank you very much. and it's so tight that every time i go, i end up next to some annoying twit on a date who is so boring and obnoxious that i just want to scream. last night i had their salad with their house dressing, which was fine. not great; opah (which was cooked perfectly, and very delicious), with tomato "jam" (so sweet and sugary that it was inedible), quinoa (which was completely unseasoned, which means that it literally tasted like dirt), a cucumber slaw (which was fine, not great), and asparagus (which was so tough and woody that i may have been chewing on a tree sapling). i was so disappointed that i wanted to just get out of there and go home... but the service is deliberately slow so that you may linger over your meal. it was miserable. i skipped desert so that i could get out of there, but in past visits i have had the creme brulee (which was not set, and i was stuck with a big runny mess), and i have had their ice cream (which was full of ice crystals. ice cream should be creamy and smooth). GIANT waste of money. the next time someone gives me a gift certificate for this place, i'm selling it on craigslist or ebay. it's that bad. i won't even eat there for free. and as a side note, they have very little to offer if you don't eat pork, beef, or poultry. i understand that not every restaurant has to cater to vegetarians, or almost-vegetarians (like me - i eat seafood). but you would think that if someone is going to drop this kind of scratch, that they could find something appealing on the menu. i have always felt like i am compromising. and if you have a restricted diet, my suggestion is... don't even bother. read more

This place was awesome! We shared the octopus app which was interesting and delicious. Then split a pork chop entree which was done beautifully. The veggies that were incorporated in both were front & center and done to perfection! Presentation was A1. Jen, the bartender, was warm & friendly as was the chef's wife, Dorothy. this is my favorite restaurant, bar none. I live outside Houston for work but commute home as often as i can, and my #1 request when home is to dine at the Savory Grill. The staff greet us -- my husband and me -- by name, and the food and service are always extraordinary. Thank you! read more

While the food was amazing and some of the best of this region, the wait time between sitting and receiving menus to appetizers to entrees was almost unbearable. When our entrees finally arrived, they looked spectacular, but as they arrived hours after we were seated, we wrapped them, having lost our appetites. Worst dining experience I ever had. My wife and I had 7:00 Pm reservation Saturday 3/2 . The salad of "mixed greens" was a " Bag-o-Salad" you could but at Weiss markets. After many probes as to when our meal was to be served, we were asked time and time again would you like more bread. For those of you not savy in restaurant lingo, that means we will serve you when we're damn good and ready. Well after an hour and a half we asked for the check on what we had thus received. The waitress, no trying to assuage our anger, didn't even offer to comp us on any or all of the meal. She tossed a check on the table , we paid and left. The service for this upscale restaurant $150 with tip not uncommon was abbismal. My wife and I will never return and have told our most enthusiastic and regular diners to take a pass on the Savory Grill. I hope this review gets to the chef's/owners. The food is unreal. The menu changes all of the time, farm to table. Very intimate setting. Great service. If you like Riesling wine the Dr Loosen is killer! I cannot say enough good things about this place, it is a little off the beaten path but that makes it the best kept secret in the valley! read more

What an amazing meal! We decided to try Savory Grille for our 10th anniversary. We received no special treatment other than a candle on our dessert which was amazing. My point is that everything we received seemed standard...but was spectacular! From the wonderful waitress who was beyond accommodating and made us feel at home to the Chef who came out and greeted us as well as many other tables and walked a pair of old friends into the door and to their table, which I must say is an amazing thing as a chef......you create the meal and execute to have the confidence in his people to come out and introduce himself shows his absolute reassurance that the meal will be great. And what a great meal it was! To start we received a tasting of a fish with pickled sides..delicious in one bite! Great bread and soft butter. We shared appetizers of foi gras and pork cheeks. Out of this world. The side components and sauces were as close to spectacular as the main appetizers as you can get. The salad was great...only a chef that knows his food is good will give you three choices and nothing other one or probably all is going to make your salad taste like the best salad you have had. Had I known the amazingness of what was to come i would have had a bite of bread half my salad. Because what came out I probably can not describe. It was rack of lamb. but it wasn't. it was steak at least he made it taste that way...along with crisp veggies that were not just veggies. Creme brule for dessert great coffee .....great is not enough for this place. Thank you to our waitress and chef...the most amazing meal and experience. My first time visiting did not disappoint! Each dish was thoughtfully prepared with design, color, and taste in mind. I could've made a meal out of the sausage appetizer- bratwurst-like,with sauerkraut and a cider reduction. The courses kept coming- fed for a day, not just a meal! read more

This past saturday was a night i will remember for a very long time to come.First off i had the pleasure of taking a wonderful,beautiful young lady out to dinner for her birthday and she recommended your place very highly.The night started out with a glass of wine so we were both able to relax a little before ordering,then came time to order dinner.We started with an appetizer she had the crab cake and i had the oysters this was a start of the best yet to come for they were excellent.I guess i should have started with home made bread that came first and was a perfect way to start our meal.Next we ordered our salads and our main entrees.She had the cobia fillet, and i had the sea scallops which were prepard to perfection my plate was completely empty she left a little rice on her plate so she could save room for dessert.She was very happy to know that had the crem brulee which she had been raving about all night,i settled for the chocolate peanut butter cake.Any way i would just like to say everything from the service to the food was just down right on the money.We also liked the way the food came out where you waited til each course was finished before serving the next one.All in all i would recommened your restaurant to anyone.My date since she's been there before would like to get a food critic there and i agree cause i know they would be well satisfied.Also in closing it was nice to leave there very full but not bloated.You will definitley see both of us again in the near future.Thanks again for making our dinner date most enjoyable and satisfying. The Savory Grill 'was' one of our favorite restaurants. The food is always excellent. They serve the best duck I have ever had and they have amazing desserts! I cannot say enough about the food! That said, our last couple visits to Savory Grill have been less than stellar. First, I would prefer to convey my criticism directly to the owners, but since they don't provide a contact email address on their Web site, I have to comment publicly on a site I know they monitor. The crux of the criticism is very simple; service is great as long as your server is not Dorothy. The last two times my wife and I have been to SG, we have had the unfortunate experience of being "served" by Dorothy. Dorothy is slow; she will ask you if you would like something (like bread) and then never bring it. We ordered coffee with our dessert and then it sat in the pass-through window getting cold, only to be delivered by a more attentive waitress after we were nearly finished with dessert. I could list more examples.... We've spent a few thousand dollars at SG over the last couple years, and now we're done for a while. Other than our last two service experiences, the Savory Grill is a great restaurant. Good luck... read more

For many years, our family has enjoyed the great food and service at the Savory Grille. We have recomended this Berks County landmark to many friends who enjoy great cuisine. However, tonight we has a terrible experience with burnt food and pushy, ill-mannered and unprofessional service. The waitress pushed for a wine order before we even ordered our meals. When we did make a choice of a great French wine, we were informed that it was out of stock! While the filet was great, the scallops were burnt to the point that all you tasted was a bitter burnt taste. No scallop flavor was there. My wife asked me not to cause a scene and not to return the meal. The duck was way overcooked and we were never offered pepper for or salads. Our 8 year old grandson's meal was delayed 22 minutes because the waitress ordered the wrong meal. While he was a little gentleman in his wait, the correct meal was ill prepared, with under cooked chicken and the pasta was burnt to a crisp on the underside. To add insult, the waitress charged us for both the incorrect and correct meals. There was an attempt at an apology, but no offer to deduct costs from the bill due to the error and delay. The Savory Grille staff has totally lost any sense of attention to detail and quality dining. We will not return there for a $300+ meal until we have an absolute guarantee from Shawn, Dorothy, and the Savory Grille Staff that they have corrected their deficiencies and have proper attention to detail...with quality food and service!!! read more

Hello Lehigh Valley! Being new to the area and a food critic from my neck of the woods I thought I would try out some places to dine. From reading so many reviews on the Savory Grille, I had to see for myself. The first thing I noticed upon entering the establishment was the lack of space. The overall staging of the tables was very cramped and the overall noise level was quite loud, not the place to go for a quiet evening for 2. The wait in between meals was quite lengthy. I did take notice that couples that came in after us were served their appetizers and salads before we were. We waited 45minutes for a salad, which were nothing to rejoice about. I was hoping for the salad to be more full of color and flavoring. After another 30-45minute wait our entree's arrived. I ordered the filet mignon, granted there are many out there that indeed prefer their meat undercooked, as for me I prefer the well done. By this time, my lack of hunger had set in that I was about to leave and then our food came out. The waitress just dropped off our meals and left, without checking if the meat was to my liking. My filet came out blood red, which completely ruined my appetite for the rest of the evening. The waitress indicated she was so in tuned to my allergy that she forgot to the tell the staff on how to prepare my filet. Needless to say another 10minutes later with my semi well done filet brought to me. It was garnished with mashed potatoes and finely cut carrot sticks and 3 asparagus. After reading all the previous reviews, I was hoping for an explosion to occur in my mouth and in all honesty, I could have prepared a better meal at home. The filet had no real flavor to it, the mash potatoes, I was hoping would have had some type of seasoning or herb added to it, and the vegetables were semi cooked and bland. Overall, 3 hours later and all I additionally obtained was a coffee. With the increased noise and feeling like I was sandwhiched in between like a sardine, I really just wanted to leave to go to my home where it was peaceful and quiet. I would not advise anyone to go to the Savory Grille to dine. It would be less expensive to make an extravagent meal in the comfort and quietness of your own home( did I mention the prices were quite pricey as well!!) So if you want a better filet, I suggest going to the Texas Roadhouse on Hamiltion Blvd-its much less expensive and has a much better flavor for half the price. My guest and I will definitely never return to this establishment again. Remind me to never read the GoodTaste book prior to finding a place to dine. read more
