One of the most interesting, best executed fusion menus in the Valley, but a slow start drops them a star. We went early on a Wednesday without a reservation. Seating us was not a problem. Getting us started was. The server gave us a table, handed us our menus, and then didn't come back for 10 minutes. We ordered drinks and asked for a few more minutes since we had questions on the menu that we had to wait to ask. Fifteen minutes later, our drinks arrive. I know that it is small & intimate, but 25 minutes from seating to drink is kind of ridiculous. Anyways, life was fine after that...other than the fact that the service improved, the lady was never what you would call personable or friendly. The amuse bouche was a good snapshot of what was to come. I started with the cauliflower soup (I think it ranks up there with the best soups of my life) while my husband had the breaded duck tenderloin (loved the little pickled blueberries). The bread basket was well executed and refilled as necessary. Then lovely piles of salad (included with your entree purchase) with a selection of housemade dressings. At this point, I was full, but there was more food to go! I took a "risk" and had the grilled pork tenderloin. I normally shy away from pork while dining out (unless it's bacon or sausage...) but the quinoa, pancetta & apple chutney was calling to me. Totally worth the risk. The pork was perfectly seasoned and juicy, and I didn't even miss being potato-less (a huge feat for his midwestern girl). The portion was decently sized, to the point that the leftovers made two lunches for me. My husband had the grouper with the crab, which I didn't get to taste (dang shellfish allergy), but he was bragging from his side of the table. I had a chocolate cake for dessert that was good, but ot the most impressive thing ever. My overtly fully stomach may have been to blame. Drinks were amazing...the wine by the glass list is a bit short, but I can understand the reasoning. Cocktails were well executed & delicious. Bill with tax & tip was well over $200, making it one of the priciest meals we've had in the Valley. If we hadn't had the service issue at the beginning, I'd be swooning. I'm hoping it was a bad night, because it's difficult to swallow being ignored for so long when you are paying that kind of moolah. The Valley is not NYC. read more

My fiancée and I went here for cocktails and appetizers for our anniversary and we were very impressed! The cocktails were delicious. The appetizer we got was the pork cheek, which our server David recommended, and it was absolutely amazing! Everything is made fresh in house, including the bread, which was so good we asked if we could buy a loaf. We were able to buy a loaf, which a regular sitting next to us said was a rarity since it is fresh bread made to serve before dinner. We were there on a Sunday night near close, and they are closed Monday and Tuesday which probably helped us to get a loaf of bread. We very much enjoyed our experience there, especially our service from David, and we will be returning very soon to try the duck! read more

The Savory is a small, tucked-away gem. So called fine dining can be a clichéd experience-- haughty wait staff affecting cultured accents, self-consciously bizarre dishes, and inflated prices. But this restaurant, occupying the former stable of the long since vanished Seisholtzville Hotel, is unaffected and straightforward. The tariff seemed a trifle steep to us (we usually hit inexpensive ethnic eateries) until we considered that our made-to-order vegetarian dishes consisted of at least a half-dozen elements-- a lot of labor and ingredients for about 24 dollars. If you aren't into eating meat and fish, don't be put off by all the livestock and seafood on the menu-- if alerted when you make reservations, the owners will put together an improvised feast. Our daughter, who has checked out many vegetarian and vegan restaurants while living in Philadelphia and the DC area, declares the Savory Grille her favorite. Yes, the seating is cheek by jowl, but we found that to be cozy and convivial, not crowded. The service isn't lightning quick, but assuming you want to carry on a conversation with the people at your table, the pacing strikes us as an asset. And the background burble of conversation was far better than piped-in light jazz or easy-listening oldies. No beers on tap, but the bottled selection is good and the cocktail list is highly inventive (we went for a gin Martini incorporating plum wine and violet liqueur, with the rim dipped in lavender sugar). As we dined my wife took three pages of notes on the ingredients, trying to figure out how to approach our vegetarian dishes (both were distinctly different) at home, but that'll be a stretch for us. All of which is to say that the Savory is highly recommended. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I first visited this place a few years back when I was skiing at Bear Creak Mountain and instantly loved the food. Every time I came back I always enjoy the specials and I love how they adjust the menu depending on the season. Probably the 7th or 8th time I've been and it somehow keeps getting better. Shawn is a masterful chef who has a passion for food and his customers. Last night was no exception. The braised pork cheeks were fork tender and flavor-packed, complemented by tempura-fried cheese curds -- just brilliant. My entree -- buffalo skirt steak -- was exquisite: perfectly grilled with a robust and slightly tart cabernet reduction sauce, grilled ramps (oh, yeah!) and the best thick-cut frites I've had in years. My wife's soft shell crab was divine -- light, tasty and so very fresh. We sat in the Arbor Room, where a cool summer breeze gently drifted across our table all evening. We had a great dinner here and we will definitely be back. The service was attentive, atmosphere nice, and food excellent. It was a little confusing when we arrived since there wasn't a hostess station but a waitress immediately saw us and took us to our seats. Reservations are definitely needed and call early- my husband call on Tuesday and we got the last sat night reservation at a reasonable hour (7:00), they only other options were 4:30 or 9:00. This is a beautiful restaurant in Lehigh County Hereford PA, this was our first time dining here, we had one of the early reservations 5:15 pm. The actual building is quite charming, old world-style, cozy, really really nice atmosphere. The wait staff is superb, really professional knows what they're doing, knows how to take care of guests. The food if you are a fan of seafood this is the place for you, if you're not, then you need to look elsewhere. The menu is quite limited for those who are not fans of seafood, which I am not. As I noted the wait staff is extremely professional upon greeting you they explain the menu everything is freshly made also they asked if there's any special dining needs allergies Etc so they really care about taking care of the guest. They bring out a quick bite compliments of the chef, again this turned out to be seafood, not a fan of any of this so I didn't eat it, my husband loved every bite. My appetizer was braised pork cheeks in an aus jus with a parsley dumpling. The pork was delicious and actually a large portion this could have been a dinner portion for me. The pork was cooked so tender you could cut it with your fork and the aromas was heavenly. I ended up having to pack up half to eat at home later. They also bake their own bread, today was Irish Ale and a baguette. I could have just eaten the bread all night. For dinner I ordered the free range chicken which came with lump crab meat, normally for the average person this is fabulous, for me it was not, I asked for it to be removed I ended up with couscous and some roasted vegetables. The vegetables were fine, the couscous I'm sorry to say had no flavor and it was like eating sand. My chicken had its skin still on it cooked to perfection nice and crispy whereas the breast was tender and juicy I would have preferred some kind or orzo or even rice instead of couscous. My husband had the Walleye Pike ( yes some kind of fish) he enjoyed every bite again not being a seafood eater I couldn't appreciate it. Their dessert selections again quite unique, I had a chocolate flourless torte it came with a malt beer ice cream and coffee caramel sauce I could have done without the beer ice cream but the cake was heavenly. So again if you're going to go by my posting I'm kind of a plain Jane eater I like bread, meat and potatoes not a fan of too many vegetables nor do I eat any salad and especially not a fan of seafood of any kind. I go to these places with my husband because he does enjoy a good seafood dinner I just wish there were more selections on this menu that weren't just seafood but it is a place worth checking out we will probably be back. read more

My bad experience with the (Un)Savory Grille began in the parking lot when I was nearly run over by a Beamer Yuppie as he was trying to impress his friends, no apology of course. Upon entering a tight-faced tanned Waiter?Owner? popped out of the main dining room entrance door and greeted us with: "Do you have a reservation?" It was just 5PM so didn't think that was necessary. Well he said, "this room is completely booked for the evening but I'm pretty sure you can get a table in the Bar/Dining Room." So we entered door#2 for the common people and saw there was NO ONE else in that dining room or sitting at the bar. We were told however that the nice tables by windows were already reserved but we could sit next to a blank wall, no problem. We then got menus and saw a glass of their HOUSE Chardonnay was $9.50, followed by $10 and up Appetizers. Their list of Entrees only included about 6 choices, priced as high as $42 each. We walked out. This place is in Seisholtzville, not Manayunk, get real. So Yuppies and Beamer people, go for it. And just remember, the $200 or $300 you spend there for dinner for two could feed a family of four for a week or two. Oh that's right, you would NEVER think of that! read more

High compliments for our excellent evening, seated in the back dining room we celebrated our wedding anniversary on Oct 18. The room, table setting, real flowers, Chris (our waiter) everything was perfect. We started with a crab appetizer, we were served wonderful bread, complimentary "money pouches", dinner salads were quite good, my husband ordered chicken / beet polenta and mine was a seasonal scallop dish. Finished up with pumpkin ice cream. The quality of food was excellent, the quantity was right on the mark we took a little home. The Savory Grille turned out not so Savory. This was our first visit after hearing for years about how great it is. What a complete disappointment!!! Although the service was fairly good, the food was not. The cucumber dressing was flavorless. The scallops were gritty, undercooked and seasoned with way too much salt. My hubby had filet mignon and said he's had way better filet elsewhere. You can definitely get far better Scallops and steak at Blue or Youells!!! We won't go back to the Savory Grille. read more

AMAZING. Savory Grille has been the go to fine dining spot for my family since it opened. The owners and all of their staff are incredibly kind and provide wonderful service! Walker never fails to give me a fabulous drink! The menu is seasonal and changes constantly, so you can't trust the online menu before you go. Just go! Everything on the menu is incredible! If you're celebrating a special event (anniversary, birthday, etc) this should be your spot! The staff will go out of their way to make the evening special and if you have special requests (bottle of champagne, etc) they'll do everything they can to accommodate you. The atmosphere is beautiful, the restaurant is in an old stone house that was a bar room a long long time ago. You can either eat in the house or on the enclosed (temperature controlled) porch. It can be a bit hard to find if you're not familiar with the area, but don't let that scare you away! Everything is fresh, made on site, and DELISH! Well if you haven't found the Savory Griile yet you're missing out. Here the food is unique, but so edible! It starts with a lovely ride through the country past Macungie and Bear Creek. The restaurant is simple but chic. Try the arbor room. The waiter, Chris, is someone who waited on us before and is great. Very knowledgeable about the ingredients, the cooking, the spices (not overdone), and the sides that go with each meal. No one pushes wine or drinks on you and the glass of wine suggestion to go with my outstanding and perfectly cooked rib cap was fine. Only critique: they didn't have Hamans Old Toms gin for the best martini you'll ever have. Not a deal breaker but it would hv been perfect for me. Never mind the "claims" of all those downtown Allentown or Bethlehem restaurants. If you want a special unique and elegant dinner-try or return to the Savory Grille!! read more

It was my fourth visit in four years, as before, it was a great! While a little too crowded (seats about 30 in the space for 15), the service is good and the food is beyond fantastic! My party of five each had a different appetizer and entrée which we all shared. Everything was amazing and the flavors are difficult to put into words, other than just incredible. Our favorite place for years...Louise was our server and is very classy...our meal was superb and staff was very attentive to all our needs...definitely can't go wrong at this place! The menu is very unique but the food is excellent with a beautiful presentation. It's a little pricey but totally worth every penny. My husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary here. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the friendly service. What was especially unique were the salad dressings! I had the Rosemary and red beet and my husband had the cilantro lime. Our dinner presentations looked right out of a high end food magazine. I have to take serious issue with the previous review by Maria L and her repetitive complaint about Savory Grille being a "seafood" place. That is simply NOT the case. All one has to do is go to their website and look at the menu, which 75% of the menu is beef, lamb, duck, chicken, pork. A smorgasbord of meat for the land lover! Onto my review: I would have given 4.5 stars but it wasn't an option so I gave 5 stars because it's still well deserved. We had two small complaints. 1) There's no host/hostess and it's confusing which dining room to enter (there's two doors to two dining rooms). When you enter the door, you're smack dab in the dining room. It seemed everyone who came went in the wrong door which was a little distracting as we were the table next to the door. 2) There's literally no vegetarian options. Which was a little disappointing as they have a plethora of the freshest most amazing vegetables on all the dishes! When my wife asked the waiter if there were vegetarian options, he said no, but that in the future, when making a reservation let them know and the chef would have something special prepared. That would've been great to know when making the reservation. But still, with all the vegetables they had available, it would've been simple to make up something. Luckily my wife is pescatarian so she was able to order a seafood dish. NOTE to Shawn D.: If you would take that Beet Puree and place on top a pile of those seasoned veggies, my wife would've been in heaven and probably be back every night! Now onto the positives, which is everything else. The atmosphere is simple fine dining without being pretentious. From the moment we sat down, we felt like our waiter was an old friend. He knew everything about the menu, inside and out. It seemed he was always around but never intrusive, like he always knew the perfect time to stop in and check on us and never interrupting our conversation. If the food would've been mediocre (which it wasn't), we'd still come back because we appreciate great service. I won't go into our meals in great detail as the menu constantly changes and you probably won't have the options we had. My wife had a seasonal rhubarb cocktail. OMG so delicious, and I don't like rhubarb. We started with the char grilled octopus appetizer. It was maybe a little under charred, but still had a great grilled flavor and melt in your mouth tender. Would definitely get it again. I had grilled swordfish with a beet puree. The swordfish was sublime. Quite thick but tender and juicy throughout with great flavor. I can make a mean grilled swordfish myself, but haven't achieved this perfection. I can only attribute it to freshness and quality of their ingredients. There was a bit more beet puree than I expected, as I don't like beets. But my wife was happy because she loves beets and she eagerly finished my leftovers. For dessert we shared the rum ice cream with caramel sauce. Sure, the ice cream was delicious. Really delicious. But the caramel sauce, it had something in it... maybe pixie dust or something because it was magical. After we left and got in the car, we realized we were there for two hours. Yet we felt like it was only 30min. Thank you Savory Grille for stealing an extra 1-1/2 hours from us. read more

Everything was great! Service was excellent and the food was delicious. I read a few reviews that said you might leave hungry, but that wasn't the case at all (and we like to eat). For $125, two diners can experience the romance of Moshulu, novelty of Buddakan, grandeur of Union Trust or the every-day-hum-drum suburban experience of Savory Grill. Where to begin, besides the end. Tight space, a persistent heater, diner bread and salad, a confused waitress, barely edible striped bass and a bill that made you wish you ate elsewhere. read more

awful. i have been here three or four times now, and i have never had a good meal. this place does excellent plating presentation and that is about it. i suspect that a lot of these dishes go onto the menu without anyone ever tasting them first. for the prices they charge, you aren't getting anywhere near your money's worth. the interior is lame. i think they're going for charming, but i think it looks cheap. and they have you listening to 70s rock. not appropriate. i want fine music with my fine dining, thank you very much. and it's so tight that every time i go, i end up next to some annoying twit on a date who is so boring and obnoxious that i just want to scream. last night i had their salad with their house dressing, which was fine. not great; opah (which was cooked perfectly, and very delicious), with tomato "jam" (so sweet and sugary that it was inedible), quinoa (which was completely unseasoned, which means that it literally tasted like dirt), a cucumber slaw (which was fine, not great), and asparagus (which was so tough and woody that i may have been chewing on a tree sapling). i was so disappointed that i wanted to just get out of there and go home... but the service is deliberately slow so that you may linger over your meal. it was miserable. i skipped desert so that i could get out of there, but in past visits i have had the creme brulee (which was not set, and i was stuck with a big runny mess), and i have had their ice cream (which was full of ice crystals. ice cream should be creamy and smooth). GIANT waste of money. the next time someone gives me a gift certificate for this place, i'm selling it on craigslist or ebay. it's that bad. i won't even eat there for free. and as a side note, they have very little to offer if you don't eat pork, beef, or poultry. i understand that not every restaurant has to cater to vegetarians, or almost-vegetarians (like me - i eat seafood). but you would think that if someone is going to drop this kind of scratch, that they could find something appealing on the menu. i have always felt like i am compromising. and if you have a restricted diet, my suggestion is... don't even bother. read more
