Were able to answer all my questions and seemed genuine in helping fo d a good spice combination I was looking for. The prices are a little high. They do have bigger size containers and they have higher quality spices than what you get at the supermarket. Also have some good hot sauces olive oils and vinegar for sale. Stopped here to inquire about replacing some spicy salt (Jacobsen Habanero) that we're running out of. While they didn't carry that brand, they did have a house brand of Ghost Pepper Salt which the person who helped me described as "fierce". I took a taste and decided decided to buy a bottle. On the drive home, that "fierce" lingered all the way. In retrospect, "fierce" is a bit overwhelming. I'm currently working on diluting their product - about 10 parts ground Himalayan to one part "fierce" seems to be a acceptable level. I'm sure that I'll shop at Savory again - it's our goto shop for out of the ordinary spice. I won't be buying "fierce" again any time soon. I have been buying here for a while. The spices are on the spendy side but they are WAY better than most others so it is more than worth it. I love their ras el hanout blend - I use it in my coffee! They have so many options But, what prompted my review today? Their website. My husband and I are eating low fodmap and finding blends without onion and garlic can be a pain. I read that garam masala doesn't traditionally use onion and garlic, so I checked Savory Spice to see what they had. Their ingredient list was clean, but then I saw The Thing. They list the dietary concerns. Garlic Free, Soy Free, Capsaicin Free and more. This is AMAZING! It makes it much easier to be sure of your sensitivities if you can just read that section. High quality and low pressure to buy. My daughters a I came in looking for smoked salt. I was shown the options and then said I was going to continue to look around. The store is wall to wall spices and sauces. One of the staff asked if my girls (5years old) would like to see a magic trick. Of course they said yes. She proceeded to shake up a large container of cinnamon and open the top producing powder smoke. The girls loved it. We continued to walk and were offered freshly cooked brownies. We were able to taste a variety of sauces which was a great help. We ended up getting a smoked salt, smoked jalapeño hot sauce and carnitas marinate. This spice store is a total ripoff. They charge very high prices for their own-labeled spices, which aren't labeled as organic and don't even include a package or expiration date--so you have no idea how old they are. On top of that, their return policy is absurdly strict. If you don't have an account/receipt, they won't take back even an unopened item clearly bought from them, even just days later. Terrible business practices and zero respect for customers. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

I f-ing love spice shops. This one i almost passed over since the kids and wife are bored by them. The sign caught me... "ghost pepper" they had bulk ghost pepper and powder, and salt, and bbq sauce, and...and...and... so much more. Huge selection, great stuff. They get it for you so you know its not contaminated by some fool. I got two things, spent a tiny 7$ but they were great. Ghost pepper salt and wasabi powder. Now its not 100% wasabi (bummed) but its better than youll get 99% of places you get sushi. I just wish they had the premium! I think there is some huge wasabi farm here in oregon if i remember correctly too. Samples here, must be 1000 from salts to sauces, bbq-dipping, some jelly pepper and non, and just more than i could taste. Come and get it, you wont regret it! read more

I am a regular customer. I offered cash to pay for my items which they refused to take. The Oregon legislator recently passed a law that requires businesses to accept cash. The man who handled this was very argumentative and rude. I was compelled to use a debit card. I will never shop there again. Walk in this store and immediately you'll be overwhelmed with the strong smell of the combination of however many spices are in the shop (a lot). It's glorious! You'll be asked if you've been in before and then given a grand tour. There's everything from truffle salt (perhaps the most delicious salt I've ever tasted), to fried trinadad scorpion peppers (which I've eaten!). You'll find standard pantry shelf staples, cheddar cheese powder for your popcorn, coffee rubs, Thai and Indian curry spices, spices you've never heard of but will fall in love with...so many awesome things. Come in, sample some new stuff, leave with an empty wallet. There are so many awesome finds. There's also a great rewards program, offering $10 off when you spend $100 over however many visits, a free jar of whatever spice you want for your birthday, a free jar when you spend over $30...and a bunch of other stuff I don't remember. Like I said. A lot of stuff. The shopkeepers are super friendly and helpful. They showed us everything that's popular, their own favorites, invited us to sample everything we wanted, and really seemed excited to work there. Pretty much my entire life I have been the type of person to pick up spices at the grocery store and leave them to collect dust in a cabinet until I need them again. And then I moved to Sellwood from a suburb of Seattle and made it my mission to support all of the amazing local businesses in the area. Which led me to Savory. My first trip in, I purchased a variety of staples (garlic powder, coriander, and chili powder). When you walk in, the smell is off-the-hook incredible. And the staff is adorable in their welcome, taking the time to show you around and explain how things work. You can buy almost all of their spices in bulk (served up in a bag or a bottle) or you can grab a pre-filled bottle from the shelf. After my inaugural visit, I used my spices same day to make a meal and I cannot tout loudly enough how delicious fresh spices made the meat taste. It was noticeable. No joke. It changed my the way I shop for spices. With the exception of a handful of frequently used spices, essentially I now buy only what I need for whatever meal I am making. And the short walk to Savory makes that possible. Moreover, Savory has unexpectedly reasonable prices and that helps make using fresh spices viable. It's a specialty shop so I was prepared to see slightly higher price tags. That just wasn't the case; everything I needed was reasonable. And you can make it even more reasonable by bringing in your old containers (for $1 off) , or stopping by during your birthday month (free spice blend), using the welcome-to-the-hood coupon (free spice blend sample), and joining their frequent customer program (I forget the exact rewards). Note you should probably check their website or FB page to see what offers are valid currently because I won't be updating this review to reflect that. Ha! read more

I just placed my third order this afternoon after being very pleased with the curry blends and the Mexican corn seasoning we just got. Imagine my surprise when they called shortly after and offered to hand deliver my order because we are local. That goes above and beyond good customer service. I love using their website because the descriptions are accurate and make me feel confident trying something new. I love this place- when you walk in the scent of spices envelopes you in ways that have you thinking of baking and cooking something wonderful. They have unusual spices not available in grocery stores and their spices are fresh- I recently bought cherry extract so I could make a cherry steamer at home. Today I will look for dried curry leaves for a chicken recipe I'm making. A welcome addition to Sellwood. I was a little bit wary when first their signs went up since I realized this was a franchise and I prefer to shop locally as much as possible. Now that the store is open I find I can support it because of it's business model and the freshness of the product sealed the deal for me. I buy spices a pinch or two at a time and you are welcome to do that at Savory. My new special treat is their candied ginger, it has got to be the best I've ever tasted, I prefer the stronger of the two varieties personally. I am absolutely thrilled that I can find several spices locally that I previously could only find online (and then have to pay shipping) like whole anise stars, varieties of paprika and more. Not only are these oddities available, they're fresh. Savory orders small orders weekly, as needed, so that everything is fresh. "Like, for instance," the friendly saleswoman told me, "We had someone want to buy a lot of turmeric. So, we're wiped out of turmeric until we get more in." If I hadn't already been around the shop gazing at the wonders, this may have frightened me away thinking that they'll be out of anything I'd like, but they'd had ample supply of everything that I saw. If there is a specific spice you need, it might be a good idea to call ahead. I also like that you can buy only the amount that you need rather than an entire jar. For someone who can never seem to finish a spice jar before it begins losing its flavor, this was very good news to me. If I understand correctly, if you BYOJ (bring your own jar) it's a dollar off the transaction. I'm not sure how this works if you just need a pinch. The saleswoman told me that the prices were at or below grocery store prices. Since most of the spices I looked at are not something I see at New Seasons, where I shop, I'm not sure how accurite this is, but I thought the products I purchases are reasonable. This summer on a work trip, my husband found a hot sauce he loved that has the hottest pepper on earth: ghost pepper. Just a drop or two on a plateful of food is enough to set the tastebuds ablaze (or so I hear). Well, that one needs to be refrigerated because of all the other crap in it. But, at Savory, they offer one that has three simple ingredients: ghost pepper chile, vinegar and salt. I bought that so he can keep it in his car for when he grabs lunch (a wok from New Seasons or a burger or so on). It was $10.95, less than the other sauce we bought elsewhere. I also bought a similar one, only with red habenero chiles instead for just $5.95. There were milder versions I didn't pay very close attention to. They have vanilla available, as well. There's Tahitan and Madagascar extracts and pastes as well as whole beans. As far as I saw, they do not carry tea. It seems like a lot of spice shops carry tea as well. Although Savory does not, there's a fantastic local, award-winning tea shop just about two blocks down 13th. read more

Savory Spice Shop reminds me a lot of the Spice House in Chicago, which (trust me) is a huge compliment. I got a gift card for this lovely shop for Christmas and visited it for the first time. I was very impressed by the great selection and quality of spices here! In addition to pre-packaged spices and spice mixes, you can ask for them to measure out your desired quantity - this is especially nice for trying new recipes when you need a spice you don't stock at home but don't want to buy a whole jar of it that might go to waste. I discovered this shop right after it opened across from the Sellwood Library. If you enjoy experimenting with unique flavors and like quality items, this is the spice shop to go to. They literally have what looks like hundreds of variety. And unlike the spices that sit in a bottle at the grocery store, these are fresh and aromatic. Full disclosure: I didn't buy anything during my visit. But I made a mental note to definitely return next time I need a semi-obscure ingredient. The staff immediately and warmly greeted us. They gave us a brief overview of the sections, and invited us to try some of the goods the demonstration chef was preparing. I had a cold cider that was phenomenal. Perusing the shelves, I kept wanting to face-palm. "Honey, remember when I went to 5 stores looking for crushed fennel? They have crushed fennel!!" "Remember when I needed Caribbean jerk seasoning but couldn't find it so substituted something else and it ruined the dish?!? They have Caribbean Jerk seasoning!" Noted, noted, and NOTED. I plan to make a trip back when Christmas roles around again. They had awesome gift sets of seasoning collections that will be the perfect gift for some weekend-kitchen-warriors I know. read more

I'm sure this place is great when you visit the store. Online; Not so much. I received a gift card from my sister-in-law, but I live too far from the store. Since the back of the gift card said I could use it online I tried to place an online order. The web app said I couldn't use the card online (?) and had to call. I called, but the service rep couldn't even get my address correct after 4 attempts, including spelling out each digit and word. Imagining how long it would take for her to get the 25-digit gift card code correct I abandoned the call. I called them and asked for the owner to contact me to discuss their service issues. Crickets. So I sent an email to them. The rep who responded was able to complete the transaction OK. PITA to get some value out of a $20 gift card. btw, $9.85 shipping for two 4oz packets of dried spices. I'll just use Amazon or Ebay in the future. read more

So many spices, so little time! Hit this place up during a recent visit to Portland, and it was like being a kid in a candy shop. Not only is there an excellent selection, but you can taste test all of the different mixes. (They also provide water to wash the taste away from some of the stronger rubs, which I appreciated.) Prices are very reasonable, and the dried corn is amazingly good. (Just used it as a garnish on some spicy chicken stew, and did not regret my choice to buy a bag of the stuff.) I also highly recommend the ginger dipped in chocolate. So much refreshing yum! The kicker? One of the staff was nice enough to play with my friend's puppy outside while we shopped. (They're considered a food establishment, so you can't bring your four legged companions in.) Instead of letting her wait outside while I made some quick selections, this awesome individual kept the little guy amused while we both took a look around.
