First off, this is a cash only establishment. Which, by 2019 standards you're either under reporting income to avoid taxes, in league with organized crime to launder money or funneling unreported cash to fund terrorism. I'm not saying Savoy Donuts does these things, but come on it's 2019, get with the times. The donuts are waaaaaay over glazed and taste like your grandmas purse candy--where there's that strange hint of old lipstick and Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds perfume. The dough is "bready" and misses that soft, melt in your mouth texture that so many old school San Diego donut shops used to have. Not a fan of Peterson's for this same reason. Like many Escondido restaurants it lacks refinement and quality. Definitely a donut shop for the lower echelon trough feeders. read more

On my first visit to Savoy's, I was warmly welcomed by the owners who were very engaging and friendly. I ordered an apple fritter and a glazed old fashioned to go...I was pleasantly surprised by the free blueberry donut included in the unassuming white paper bag. I started with the old fashioned and found it to have a perfectly light crunch when you bite into it, while the inside was dense yet soft (a wonderful balance for an old fashioned donut!). Next up was the delightful blueberry donut, which was thrown in complimentary. I love free stuff, but I would have gladly paid for this; it was delicious! Not something I would normally order, but it's now high on my list of favorite flavors. After two donuts, I knew the apple fritter would have to be set aside for later, but while it was fresh, I just had to take a bite or two (okay, three). Apple fritter aficionados wouldn't be disappointed. Upon arriving home, I hesitantly stored the still generous remaining portion in a Ziploc bag to enjoy later. "Later" was the following morning. Fresh donuts of any variety normally don't hold up very well, but I was again pleasantly surprised with its freshness and flavorfulness the day after. I shouldn't forget to mention that they were "technically" closed on my first visit. I was new and didn't know they were closed on Sundays. They just happened to be filling in a very large special order placed by a local church for that morning. When I meekly tapped at the door (ignoring all obvious indications that they weren't open for business), they opened the door welcomingly and without hesitation. This is the best donut shop I have ever been too! They look like average donuts but they are so moist, so soft....it is ridiculous. The taste is seriously the best. My favorite is the chocolate frosted donut with cream filling. This is REAL cream filling, not like all the other places that say they have cream filling, this is true custard, deelish! They do sell out early which is totally a bummer but it is completely worth getting up early. You won't ever taste a donut this good. I live right next to Peterson's, but I will actually make the extra drive to Savoy. I don't feel like I need a 5-pound donut, which is Peterson's only real benefit. Savoy is fresher and the owners are great. Always service with a smile, and, as mentioned by other reviewers, the lady usually will sneak an extra donut in the bag. It's a tradition at my work for people to bring donuts to meetings, and ever since the first time I brought Savoy, I've had co-workers asking for it by name. When I moved to San Diego County in 2002 I checked out all the doughnut places I could find in Escondido, and this is definitely the best. It changed hands a few years ago when the original owner retired, but EVERYONE told the new owner "Don't change the recipes!" and she didn't. My favorites are the devil's food, sugar raised, and buttermilk. Open seven days a week (but often sold out by 11 AM or even earlier), and closed on holidays. read more

Never actually been to the shop (I live up here in the OC) but had a neighbor bring us a box of extras from this place. I have to say, they have a very fine blueberry donut. Really really great tasting- not too sweet and the blueberry was just the right amount. Next up- a buttermilk frosted with chocolate. Again, fresh and not overly dense- which I believe can plague some buttermilk bricks. Finally, a glazed buttermilk not to sweet and on its tippy toes with the lithe buttermilk. Savoy knows balance. On a trip to the U.S. last summer, I visited my sister in Escondido and we conducted a comparison of donut shops in Escondido in which Savoy Donuts came out in first place. I was visited her again for a few days, and we decided to stop by Savoy Donuts to see if they still lived up to their first place position. And we were not disappointed.
