Overall I was very impressed with this little ice cream and food emporium. To begin with the young employees were polite and cheerful, and, it seemed on limited evidence, efficient also. There was a long wait, which I imagine is usually a good sign that the ice cream is good. I ordered a burger and my wife decided on a lobster roll, and we both both ordered the sweet potato latticed fries. I added a side order of onion rings. The wait was a long one, not surprising considering the number of customers, but mostly worth the wait. My burger was excellent and the fries and onion rings were pretty good. I was surprised at the large portions. We could have gotten by sharing an order of the fries, but some went home with us for another meal. My wife was disappointed in her lobster roll. It was described as being in a grilled roll or bun and came in an unimaginative hot dog bun. For the price, she was far from dazzled. Perhaps lobster sandwiches should only be gotten from shops that specialize in them. We ended with an ice cream cone. She went with frozen yogurt and I had my favorite, soft serve vanilla. So it was very good and I highly recommend it. We just won't get the lobster sandwich again. read more

Whenever my husband and I have driven by, this place has always been slammed. One day we decided to go grab a bite and see what the fuss was about. We ordered chicken finger baskets for dinner and they were absolutely delicious! Hot and crispy, with great fries and choice of dipping sauce. Real white meat chicken and not the super processed stuff! We've also had the soft serve shakes and the nut cup sundae - all delicious AND affordable - I would go so far as to say cheap for the amount of ice cream and the quality you get! Had gone here once before. My wife and I ordered hotdogs & fries. Everything seemed to be ok UNTIL we got them sat down and started eating. I had to quickly stop my wife from eating any further as her hotdog bun had mold on it. Looked at mine, and sure enough; MOLD. Took hers & my order back to the window. Showed them the mold. Asked them to please remake the food. They brought it back REALLY quick. There was a window that showed a reflection of the kitchen. I WATCHED THEM PICK OFF THE MOLD and give us the SAME food back with the exception of my wife's already bitten off hotdog. I looked at the food, told them that we weren't accepting it and I wanted a refund. They refused to refund the money, we refused to eat the food and will no longer eat there. BTW, the customers RIGHT after us ordered the same thing. I told them to check the buns for mold before eating. Sure enough, they had mold on them too (YOU WOULD THINK THAT WITH ONE CUSTOMER COMPLAINING ABOUT MOLD, THEY WOULD AT LEAST CHECK THE REST OF THE BUNS). We haven't been back since. read more

My second trip to Sawyer's and they have not increased their prices from last year because the lobster roll is still $13.99! This time we got hot dogs, fries, a chili dog, a pint of whole belly clams and an Oreo wizard. Everything was delicious. Even on a somewhat chilly night, there was still a line because this place is so popular with locals and tourists passing by. The prices are so affordable, the food and ice cream are all so good. The only bummer is that this place is seasonal. read more

Grate, every thing about the food is grate! Parking sucks because the lot is setup weirdly.

Overall, my takeaway is that it's a good place to go to please a crowd who just wants ice cream at a cheap price - but not the place to stop if you are looking for some real good ice cream. Disclaimer - I am a big ice cream eater. That being said, I was underimpressed with Sawyer's Dairy Bar. I had peanut butter cup and chocolate. Prices are pretty cheap - $2 for a baby or $3ish for a small. But, the ice cream was subpar. There was only one chunk of PB cup in my whole scoop of that flavor. The chocolate wasn't very rich, and periodically I got small ice chunks. The whole cone wasn't quite up to my standards of *good* ice cream. read more

So disappointed. My wife wanted to order a hard serve ice cream with cake batter topping. I went to ask if that was possible and they said they could only do it for soft serve. No problem. I asked for a baby cone with cake batter and told them I didn't even need the cone, but I'd pay for it if they would just pour the cake batter topping over the hard serve ice cream. They said they wouldn't do that, so I said no problem and waited for the cone to come out with the topping. Then out of nowhere the manager came barreling out from the back and said, "You can buy the place if you like and run it how YOU want to!" and then she turned around and stomped off. At no point was I rude nor impatient and was stunned at the behavior as were the customers around me. I also recognized that she was the owner's daughter so that was twice as embarrassing for the establishment. I can only hope she doesn't treat everyone that way because it made me never want to go back. I typically post positive reviews only, but this one took the cake for uncalled rudeness. A real black eye for what used to be a classic Newport stop, it's sad to see the reputation getting ruined. read more

The ice cream is okay and burgers are okay-- the ice cream barely lives up its own expectations in terms of what you're expecting for flavor, and the burgers are overpriced for the quality and flavor. Service is sub-par as the place seems to be fully staffed by only dis-interested teenage girls, that lack face-to-face skills to be employable elsewhere. Also they do not accept American Express, so it would be in your best interest to either bring cash/VISA/MC or take your well deserved business elsewhere for better quality and pricing. read more
