Super cute general store with a huge menu of options. They have sandwiches, pizzas, burgers, soups, homemade Mac and cheese and desserts. We walked around the store first. Tons of great drinks from the usual sodas in cans and bottles to some really cool imported sodas, beer and ciders. They also have a fountain with Puck's sodas which I tried and my husband chose a local beer from one of the coolers. The service was very friendly. Orders are taken at the counter and they brought our food to our table. We ordered off the specials menu so no guarantee the items we got will be available when you go. Everything sounded delicious and given this place has a reputation for being busy I would feel confident ordering anything knowing it is going to be great. I really enjoyed the whole vibe here. I will have to make it a point to come back again. It's about a 45 min drive from Winston but the drive is so beautiful it's totally worth it. read more

Point little general store has some items you can buy hot sauce certain types of nuts. I thought the waitress was good. You pay for the food upfront and they bring it to your table when it's ready. We ordered the crabcake sandwich. I thought it was flavored OK I felt like a little more crab in. It would've been better. The chicken sandwich I ordered was not fresh. I could tell that it was reheated and it tasted dry. They gave you very little chicken for the size of the bread. I thought the bread was good, but the chicken itself not so much. Had a good lunch at the Saxapahaw General Store the other day. Their beer and cider cooler selection is awesome: something for most every taste. The food was quite good: local country cooking and some other unique dishes served up on a casual patio alongside the building. You order inside & the servers bring your food out to you on the patio. [You clear your own plates.] The major drawback of the SGS is it takes a LONG time to get your order- like a REALLY long time. Do not be in a hurry here or you'll be very disappointed. The lead guy did say however-many minutes, and it was perhaps twice the estimate. Recommended if you're not in a hurry & want to relax for a bit outside. I really wanted to like this place, but unless things improve, I probably won't be coming back. The prices are about 25% higher than I think they should be. I don't mind paying more if the portions are generous or the food quality is exceptional, but I didn't find either to be the case here. The chicken sandwich was surprisingly small--smaller than what you'd get at most fast-food restaurants, except for the bun. The Reuben was average at best, and because of the price, I'd only give it 2 stars. The crab cake sandwich was just okay as well. My suggestion would be to either lower the prices or increase the portion sizes and improve the quality. If you're charging premium prices, customers expect premium food. The Saxapahaw area is charming and worth visiting, but it's not enough to justify eating here again. My advice would be to grab a meal somewhere else first and then come to Saxapahaw to enjoy the scenery. I doubt much will change because there are plenty of people willing to give this place 4- or 5-star reviews. Then again, billions and billions of Big Macs are sold every year, so popularity doesn't always mean the food is exceptional. read more

I'm beyond impressed that just about any food I try from here is amazing. I guess we are regulars for to-go orders (we rarely dine-in). It's our go-to when we're usually too exhausted to make dinner. The menu is huge and somehow everything I've tried is always SO GOOD. Like there are no weak spots?! Some solid favs my family has loved: linguine alfredo, bratwurst, fish and chips, brisket, chicken avocado salad (this might be my fav and it's HUGE), ANY sandwich (favs are the Italian and the duck bacon turkey club), and the pizza! Kids pasta is a fav of one of my kids and a super good deal. The cakes are also sooooo good (but year a little pricey at $8). Great beer selection, we usually just grab something in stock to take home. The kitchen is closed from 4-5PM (I'm usually calling in at 5:01 haha). The staff is so nice! I will say, once in a while, their estimated times can be way off. I'm okay with that though, the food is worth it. One other thing to be mindful of: On big event days (like when there is a show at the Haw River Ballroom), they run a limited menu. They also have had limited menu days in the past when they do seafood events, but I haven't run into that problem in a while. Just maybe check their Instagram. read more

It's a cute little family owned type of store where you can grab something you need and a meal. I'd recommend checking out the dessert counter. Their Tiramisu was great, in my opinion, of course. I wouldn't call it Gordon Ramsey worthy but if you're looking for that pretentious, upscale type of place, this isn't it. Pulling into the parking lot I felt almost like I stepped into the 70's. We love this place. The village of Saxapahaw the super charming and one block long set along the Haw River, we feel so lucky to have this excellent eatery in our "neighborhood". Such fresh ingredients and very cheerful service. Very busy! I love the rare roast beef sandwich in a wrap. Duck fat Fries are to die for. If you like beer, grab a table down at the hall River Hills, order your mail to go and have it with some really excellent beer. Or you can dine in store or on the patio with a nice selection of beer and wine to purchase at the store. Fabulous interesting location also great venue for excellent music at the Raw River Ballroom. Menu is reduced on show tonight due to being really jampacked and overwhelmed. But still great! Don't expect quick service. It's usually at least 20 minutes if not 40 or 45 minutes to get fed. This is my favorite brunch/lunch spot when I want a good meal and to not feel sluggish afterwards. I am amazed at the diversity and quality of food that comes from their kitchen. About half of the business is the general store, with various dry goods and refrigerated/frozen items for sale. Of the remaining half, two thirds of that is seating. The small remaining portion is the kitchen and cashier area. The inside of the store is booth seating along one wall with a long communal table and chairs nearby. They have lovely stained glass and framed pictures for sale along the windows and walls. The smell inside the store is a glorious mix of food and aromatherapy items. There is also seating outside the front of the store and to the side of the store. My favorite brunch item is the Chorizo Biscuits and Gravy. It's not overly spicy, but truly nails it on flavor. While you're at it, get a side of their home fries to go with it. Share if you want to, but don't feel that you have to. Parking on the weekends is challenging, so be patient. It is a popular destination spot due to its close proximity to the Haw River and people knowing how good the food is. If you don't get a parking spot on your first pass, circle around again. After downing a beer at the adjacent brewery I checked in. After 45 minutes I was hangry. They were just putting the wings in the fryer. I cancelled the order and got my money back. We had just enjoyed brunch at the Eddy Pub and wanted to explore the other establishments in the area. We knew they served meals from doing a bit of research but also knew their wait times tended to be long when extremely busy. As we approached the general store at about 11:30 am on a Sunday morning we could see the people sitting outside enjoying their breakfast and coffee. In addition to a few tables under the covered sidewalk area they also have a nice outdoor space which allows for larger tables. We proceeded inside and immediately walked into a bustling general store and deli. Customers were busy placing their orders at the counter and the staff looked like they were running at full speed. We began to walk through the store and we're impressed with the amount of products offered from craft beer and wine to many local products as well. We purchased a few items and the line moved quickly. We will absolutely stop in the next time we are in the area. read more

My family and I had previously eaten here a couple of months ago and the food was delicious. Yesterday, we were there at 5:00 to order the same meal, but they were out of mushrooms (and a lot of other things), so I ordered chicken linguini. The chicken was very tough and hard to chew. I took most of it home to eat the next day after removing the chicken. I wish I could upload a picture of the huge piece of chicken fat that was in my leftover meal. I didn't even know what I was chewing until I spit it out. It was disgusting. I threw the rest of the food away. None of my family could order the same meal we had the previous trip because they were out of a lot of items. Also, they charge $8.00 for one slice of cake, which I refuse to pay. I paid $25.00 for a meal I could eat only a portion of. My family and I will not be going back. read more

Ill start with that we went for breakfast and its a maybe on if Id go back for breakfast. The store looks great and I will definitely go back for that and maybe to try lunch or dinner. My eggs and bacon were good but the home fries and sausage was burnt and didnt taste great. My wife got a breakfast sandwich. Do not expect to get traditional southern biscuit if thats what you order. It is more like a type of toasted bread thats buttery so manage your expectations there. Coffee was pretty good but the breakfast sandwich my wife didnt like at all. So some of it was good some of it was bad. Really probably a 3.5 star and a maybe if id go back for breakfast. read more

Cool little spot! We came out this way to stop by Haw River Farmhouse Ales, but it read about this spot to pick up some food and I'm so glad we tried it out! It was packed at about 1pm so be careful of that, but it was well worth the 50 minute wait for our food. We got the Cuban and the turkey reuben and both were SO good! (And very reasonably priced). There is seating outside and they also have a great selection of beers and snacks inside. We even found some beers from a small brewery on Long Island and being that that's where we're are from we were ecstatic! Turns out someone that works there is from Long Island too. Things that would range from food, to candy, to clothing, etc.... In this case of Saxapahaw General Store, it's just that. It's got a few general items. A very small selection. Highly recommended. Wow. What a place. The owners of this place have gone out of their way to preserve and portray the countryside image of this store. It's set up the way these stores were in the 1950's with gadgets and tourist memorabilia hanging all over the place. The food is terrific. Perhaps our morning jaunt out on the Haw River with the Haw River Canoe and Kayak Company triggered our hunger. There's limited seating indoors. Amazing as always. This was our fourth time there. We even recommended it to friends who brought their friends there. My husband had the Vladimir. Our friend wanted that too but my husband got the last emu patty. They substituted a goat patty and made it Vladimir style. He raved about it. I got the duck salad. I don't like goat cheese so they substituted blue cheese for it. Lots of duck on it. So good. The kids (13 and 14) had a pizza and a side Cesar with a burger. They liked theirs too. While extremely popular, especially on weekends, I was a bit underwhelmed by the food at the Saxapahaw General Store. Their menu is extensive and intriguing, but considering all the hype, and the long wait for food (we ordered ahead, which I recommend - the wait was more than an hour), the food varied from decidedly average to fairly good -- not what you'd expect for such a popular spot. The meat in the Reuben sandwich wasn't identifiable (pastrami or corned beef), having been cooked until dark brown - the sandwich was plain, and dominated by meat and cheese and thousand-island dressing, with sauerkraut at such minimal quantities that it was barely noticeable. The oyster po' boy was dominated by the lettuce, tomatoes, onion and roll, and not by the fried oysters inside. Disappointing. The highlight was the blackened scallop tacos, which were quite good. We'd get those again. I love the concept of the store, I love their T-shirts (though they were out of many sizes when we visited) ... and I love their menu ... but the food itself was pretty hit and miss. At the heart of one of the best places in NC lay a little general store with a lot of character. This venue boasts an eclectic blend of groceries, drinks, treats and scratch made dishes. Well, they have a lot of old items that we haven't seen in a very long time, like Coke in the bottle and Ni-Hi orange soda. They also have things from local vendors like soaps and body lotions. But the store is quite dark so it doesn't shine as much as it should. The people there were very friendly. The service was absolutely wonderful. Worth it! I had the biscuit and sausage gravy. You receive a small ocean of gravy and sausage, with a large biscuit somewhere underneath. The gravy is buttery, strong with the flavor of the sausage and wonderful. The sausage itself has little heat to it, and a nice country flavor to it. The portions are not small. I love duck and tried both the duck bacon and sausage. They were good, but more a novelty for me. The menu is eclectic with both down home options as well as options you might find at a restaurant requiring a tie (e.g. the duck). I will definitely be back to try other options.
