Arrived at Ruli's to have an anniversary dinner. It had been awhile since we had eaten here, but I could remember the pizza and salad were delicious. Well, they did not disappoint. I was brought to my happy place in every way. The service was prompt and so friendly. Asking for suggestions was received with a smile and a full discussion and description of the plates I ordered the Chicken and Calabacitas. Wow!! The plate of vegetables under the chicken were absolutely delicious. I could've just eaten that, but let's not forget that chicken. Moist, perfectly seasoned and with yummo crispy skin. My hubby ordered the Dino rib. Braised overnight. Tender. Delicious. And the Korean sauce drizzled on top was bright and tangy. To finish we shared the chocolate cake. Oh my! Moist, rich. Pizza review time... Rulis' International Kitchen WOW. JUST WOW! Located at what was my all time favorite El Paso pizza joint, Sunset Pizza is now Rulis'. If you know anything about iconic El Paso chefs, then you know what's about to go down. Using a classic wood pizza oven I knew I was in for a treat. It's possible it's the same oven that Sunset Pizza used back in the day. I was skeptical? If I'm being 100% honest because Rulis is known for his international cuisine. I've always loved his dishes but have never ordered the pie. You eat with your eyes first, and I was already salivating at the bubbles on the crust... if I'm being real, this pie was what I was expecting yesterday with St Augustine. Chef Rulis pizza gave me hope again for El Paso pizzas. Nice fucking undercarriage. Perfect 50/50 mozz provolone cheese mix. There are so many options to choose from including pizza, tacos, burgers, soups and salads. They have brunch from 11 to 3 on Sundays and Saturdays.The service was great and welcoming. I can not tell you how sad I am to be writing a bad review. Yes, this is my first! It must be said the staff was beyond kind, knowledgeable and efficient (hence the 2-stars) however, the food was terrible. To add insult to injury upon arrival we found out Guy Fieri was there for DDD so we were even more pumped! To our disappointment the food lacked flavor and some was just plain inedible. Apps: shrimp tacos were fishy and lack luster. The wings (Chipotle BBQ) taste like ketchup and the (Teriyaki) has little to no flavor, just sweet. Entree's: Burger and Pesto Past were the only items that had some flavor and were edible. However the steak tacos, shrimp tacos, pasta chihuahua and the sriracha wings all had NO flavor! After looking at the social media promotion of this place, I decided to take my daughter there for her birthday. When we got there you are greeted by a hostess but it is not the most warm welcome despite the fact that we had a reservation. Upon being seated we were seated next to another large group with very noisy kids. Once we needed the service to begin it was literally having to ask for straws, sugar (twice), salt, chili flakes, refills. NOT once did our waiter keep up with the service. We were a party of six we which made his type an automatic 20%. If the waiter is going to get an automatic 20% tip whether it's good service or bad, well you know what you are going to get. This is definitely one reason I will not return to this place. As a waiter you have to work for it, it is not just given because you have five or more people. The food came out and it was subpar. For being a chef, you use cheap checker paper to serve food which automatically makes the appearance sub-par. My son order a coke and they brought to him in a can. For heaven sakes poor the soda out of the can at the very least. Very, very tacky. The pizza were cold an the cheese was not even melted on the pizza. The margharita pizza had no flavor, I had to load it with the salt. We also ordered the Paella with chicken. The rice was cold and the chicken looked like Tyson Frozen Grilled Chicken from a bag. It was dry and just flavorless. The place is clean because waiters are constantly sweeping and mopping which can be unpleasant to watch the mopping while you are eating. The place is nicely decorated, however the floors give a cheap taco joint appearance. The menu is not solid. It has more appetizers than real food choice and the choices you have seem incomplete. Good food - high prices! This was probably the best restaurant in El Paso, and it is not surprising it was the most expensive take-out meal I have had in awhile. I ordered a salad, calamari, and southwestern pizza with shrimp for roughly $45. The salad was good, albeit a bit overpriced. The calamari was not what I was expecting (rings) but was interesting nonetheless - grilled bulbs and squid legs abounded! The pizza was the highlight of the meal - I swapped the chicken for shrimp and was worried it would be an odd substitution on the southwestern pizza..it was the best shrimp pizza I've had in a long time! The smell coming from the pizza box was overwhelming once it was in the car. I was saving it for dinner so it took a lot of self discipline to keep it covered until a couple hours later. When I was finally able to enjoy my pizza it was as good tasting as it smelled. It was also so filling I only ate about half of it before I was completely full. Highly recommend! read more

Stopped in last week on my way across Texas because we saw it on Diners, Drive ins and Dives. What a mistake. They sat us too near the kitchen; we could smell the funk of a filthy kitchen. We had to ask to be moved. We went ahead and ordered but we were sorely disappointed with everything we ordered. There were several of us so we had a good variety of dishes and chances to be wowed. Nothing was good, nothing. It was some of the grossest, greasiest food I've ever had. None in my party was impressed. We left about $200 worth of food on the table and went and got burritos down the road. HOW on earth this place got on Diners, Drive ins and Dives is beyond me. Haven't been here is quite awhile. But I've always loved the Mexican sliders. But they don't have them anymore because of 'beef costs'. The waitress suggested a 'special' prime rim sandwich with horseradish sauce. I take the challenge. Ew. Over cooked gristle and a huge blob of fat. I don't know why I didn't send it back. It was pretty inedible. The mayo sauce with chipotle I assume, was room temp so unappealing. The bill came and turns out the special which was I assume beef which was too expensive for the sliders was affordable enough for this horrid excuse for a dish was 24 bucks! Any review on here that predates early 2014 is for a completely different business, UnRulis. And while Rulis' International Kitchen and UnRulis have merged, I swear what has been created from the two is nothing short of the perfect ambiance for a casual night with deliciously creative eats. This is the kind of place you want to go for a nice lunch or a dinner with a group of friends. Rulis' could be good for a date, but like I said, "casual". Rulis' sign is very visible from Mesa, but the restaurant itself is a bit tucked away in the same lot as Block Table & Tap. I went around 11:30 AM and was surprised to see it was pretty empty. I chose a booth towards the back so I could get the lay of the land. With all the wood and beams on the ceiling, Rulis' could easily be a lakeside restaurant. Alas, no lakes in EP, but I still felt transported to one. And no arcade (honestly I don't even know how one would've fit in there to begin with). I can't quite remember what I wanted to order, but I remember thinking "They're probably out of it." It was like very specific mussels or clams or something or other and sure enough, they were out. No biggie, I went with the squash soup, Manchego & Prosciutto, and the Bangers & Mash. Umm... Wow! Absolutely loved everything I was served. The B&M is brats on top of cheddar mashed potatoes. So good. The brats were super juicy even though they were sliced. The mashed potatoes were just the way I like them... smooth and cheesy. The M&P was perfect. A nice dry cheese with a little of that pork flavor all drizzled in honey. A great pairing with the soup. The soup had a little more texture than I expected, but the flavor was exactly what I wanted. Service was great even after it started filling up around noon. I will definitely be going to Rulis' a lot. Great place for a lunch and I'm sure at night it's perfect for dinner and drinks since they have a variety of adult beverages. Then as I walked in to do take-out order, they were turning parties away saying they were unable to accommodate them, despite there being open tables. If you are in El Paso, this place should be on your list. They used to be located downtown, across the street from the San Jacinto Plaza which I miss although the parking not too much. It's still locally owned and the menu is great. Every year I frequent it for their Chiles en Nogadas. Its different and not something easily found. I love how the restaurant is surrounded by plants and local art. Ruli's is a must in my book. A local treasure. read more

Don't go, after being featured on Food Network they have become very pretentious. The food is good and before the fame we were loyal customers. Tried our best to show our support during the pandemic. But now it's busy with poor service. Even when we made a reservation they were not ready for us. We tried to order to go and they denied us. Told us they would only serve people in the restaurant. Cannot believe I never write a review on Rulis yet. This is pretty much our to go place when we do not know what to eat. The price is reasonable, the taste is above average, and most of the food on the menu is prepared rather healthily. A few things we do enjoy - baked wings, 3 P's crostini, spinach salad, Moroccan salad, fruit and prosciutto salad, BIY pizza, barramundi, grilled veggie flat bread. This was our first time in here and we were seated quickly. Me and my husband had mixed feelings about our meals. I ordered the Chicken Calabasitas, and he ordered the "Todays Special" which was a, Stuffed Polano Pepper. My chicken was excellent! It was cooked perfectly and the sauce that the vegetables were nesting in was very delicious. His pepper, on the other hand was less than good, and he couldn't eat it. It was very strange. The polano pepper was uncooked and raw (crunchy) and was filled with a ground pork/ground beef mixture which tasted okay, but was then smothered in a white sauce that was cold; yes, I said cold. We both can't seem to remember what the server said exactly what was in the sauce, but it was strange. It had a weird texture and tasted sweet. The texture didn't bother seem to bother us too much, but the fact that the pepper was crunchy and the sauce on top was chilled, is what turned us off. Our server was awesome and very attentive to our needs, However, I do think they should've gave us a discount because my husband ate off my plate due to his own meal tasting funky and him not eating it. Unfortunately I have to give only 3 stars due to lack of flavor. I appreciate the uniqueness of the dishes, but each dish I ate was missing something flavor wise. I had the pesto fries appetizer. I enjoyed that it was freshly made pesto, but there was no depth of flavor. I also had the spinach pizza with goat cheese, pear and balsamic vinegar. A great combo of ingredients, but I think it needed a drizzle of honey or perhaps a balsamic glaze instead to bring some sweetness and really make the flavors pop. read more

Ever wanted to eat without actually being hungry? That has been me ALL day! Had no other reason of choosing Ruli's other than the fact I didn't know what I wanted and I'd never been. 1700-ish (5pm), only 3 other tables occupied, sports on the tele, random music that I barely listened to (maybe house? Chillstep? Ish).. instantly greeted and brought a water. Wanted EVERYTHING but NOTHING all at once, but went with the Ruta 22 Malbec to sip on and Baked Brie (topped with balsamic cranberries and crostini toasted to perfection to accompany) while I decided how much I really felt like stuffing down the gullet. Ate every single bite of the brie! Theeennnn I was torn between the pulled pork sliders and shrimp tacos. Waitress said they're both really good, so she wasn't much help. Ended up going with the shrimp tacos. 3 warm flour tortillas, 3 grilled shrimp apiece, avocado, mango, (and unfortunately onions and cilantro, would've requested none had I known). Coleslaw on the side, interestingly made with raisins and apples. Kind of odd pairing for the mango/avocado/shrimp tacos, but it was tasty so I'm not complaining. I KNEW I wanted dessert so I could only eat one and a few bites of slaw. Not much to choose from as far as desserts go, but they all sounded good. Crepes, something else, and a chocolate "house choice" .. I still had some wine left, so I thought chocolate would be a good pairing. It ended up being a chocolate cake topped with maybe walnuts? And a raspberry syrup with whipped cream on the side. I think maybe it was supposed to be a lava cake or something? The inside was more than just "moist" but not exactly "lava".. and it wasn't warm. But it hit my chocolate spot, and I was right: it DID pair nicely with the wine. By the time I finished ALL of that, the place had kind of filled up. So make sure you go before 1800ish if you want your first choice in seating! Overall, decent place to sit and read (if ypu dont mind a little noise) and people watch. I'd say it was really good.. but not exactly GREAT. Wine and Brie were definitely the highlights. UPDATE** 21ish hours later, I just ate the rest of the shrimp tacos, topped with the leftover slaw. They were better than yesterday (onions and all) I guess the flavors had time to fuse together (.... So Rulis' and Unrulis' have merged. They have an expansive menu which includes the old Rulis' menu and Unrulis' pizza, plus a few additions. Again, I'm going to maybe sound repetitive from other reviews, but Rulis' Kitchen is a gem. It started out in the Cortez Building downtown, probably about 7 years ago, but it was so hidden in the lowly downtown from what is now a more or less busy downtown, so they moved. Their location at 2900 Mesa was great, it was a new look. To be honest we only went once to the downtown location and ordered the famous Mexican Sliders, so once they relocated, they were a staple in my husband's food pyramid. The location I'm sure brought on some menu changes, (like I said, we only went once to the DT location, so I'm not sure how much changed). What I do know is that the menu was so varied and different from other restaurants in El Paso. They had sliders and paninis and appetizers you can only find if you go to a European cafe or an ethnic food joint. Rulis' also included craft beer and wine, when craft beer hadn't made an appearance in El Paso. In many ways Rulis's was an innovator in a territory where not much was explored. Now that they've relocated the space is bigger and the menu includes pizza and some different sandwiches and appetizers. Oh, and MUCH MUCH more beer. The Mexican Sliders and the Italian and Steak Paninos are my absolute favorites. I have tried the pulled pork sliders and the cheesesteak, which are great as well. The Cabo and the Mediterranean Salads are wonderful and some of their pasta bowls are delicious too. The pizza is not my cup of tea, but they have some crazy combinations that taste pretty good. Overall, Rulis' is a gem that El Paso is worthy of. The service the food the beer, what more can one ask for? read more

They're a big sponsor of Sportstalk and why not, I'm sure the ESPN guys and Buzz come in for food all the time. I wanted to check this place out as it's really close to home. So I was in the area for lunch and decided to check it out. When you have people sitting at the bar you need to be attentive. I was pretty much left alone on Tuesday and it was annoying as I was reading for a drink right away and then ordered a beer after some time. The founders brown was a solid choice...but where was the water? Cmon. I decided on the mango shrimp tacos, these were pretty awesome. I really enjoyed these. When it comes to the service I'm pretty sure if I'd gone to a table I would have been taken care of very well because that's what I noticed. Ok. So I went back after wife said I ordered wrong. And she was right. You really need to try one of the many appetizers and a meal in order to appreciate this place. I had a porky pizza again but this time I had the potato poblano soup. Both were excellent. Wife was right. Still small pizza sizes but with soup it was almost too much. Wife had steak panini and papas bravas. She said the panini was "ok." She says it should have been called "avocado panini with steak." The papas bravas on the other hand were very tasty. Our son had a cheese pizza. He ate all of it in one bite. Overall we will return. Four stars up from three. read more

UnRulis pizzas are different from some of the other gourmet pizza places in their unique and interesting topping/flavor combinations, like the Mexican pizza that has refried beans amongst other toppings. I tried the Chicken Teriyaki pizza, and it was good, but the thing was with a pizza flavor like that one, its fun and exciting the first couple of slices, but I got a little tired of it halfway through the pizza. I hope I'm explaining myself well, not saying it tasted bad at all, just that I personally don't want to eat a whole pizza of that flavor. Perhaps I'm just a pizza flavor traditionalist. And by no means do they only have the unique toppings, like most places, you can make your own combination if you so choose, so don't think its only a wacky pizza place. Atmosphere is definitely casual, staff was friendly, the place does smell like Parmesan cheese, but you get used to it. FYI, if you're coming here for lunch, you're likely to use up a full hour if they're busy. read more

We've been here several times. The food is consistently very good. We really enjoy their pizzas and wings. The pizzas are wood oven cooked which we are fond of. The crust is thin and the toppings are generous. Their wings are cooked thru and quite tasty. We get the Siracha Lime wings. Their salads are a decent size, with fresh ingredients. Their Chicken and Calabacitas dish is bursting of flavor. The waiters & waitresses have been very informative, helpful & courteous. The tables are covered in brown paper.
