Delicious. If I lived in Sonoma, I'd be at Scandia Bakery every day. Based on another Yelper's advice, I tried the Princess Cake. For breakfast. Yes. It is chilled, creamy goodness. If you didn't see if included a cream cake in the layers, you wouldn't know anything was solid. First, the outside is covered in the lightest almond marzipan I've ever had. It was almost like a delicate frosting - you didn't have to saw it apart. Followed by fluffy cream, this cream cake cloud, custard and a layer of raspberry, with another layer of cream cake at the bottom. And, a tiny beautiful buttercream flower on the top. Let's just say, I ate it in the car with my bare hands. My husband had an orange scone. I stole a bite - crisp buttery flaky edge, light flavor. Yes. And, I followed it up with a raspberry cream cheese Danish. At this point, I had to stop halfway through because I was so full. The husband ate the rest. read more

I order a Peppa Pig themed cake for my twins 3rd birthday. I don't live in Sonoma during the week, but I was able to email them some cakes ideas and then with a quick call we decided on the final cake look. The cake was GREAT and the perfect size! My husband ordered me a princess cake from here for my birthday. The cake was so moist and delicious and the decorating was flawless. It was the most beautiful birthday cake I have ever had. My husband wanted to pick up the cake early which would have left it unrefrigerated for a few hours, which the staff said was not a good idea as the cake it delicate and needs refrigerated.. I was not impressed by this place. First, you walk in and it's clear no effort has been made to spruce the place up, the display cases are older and mismatched, there is almost no decorations, and very little seating. The woman who helped us was borderline rude which was surprising. After all the wonderful reviews of Princess cake I really wanted to try it but there was none so instead we got a ladyfinger cookie, a ice cream flavored cookie, a slice of chocolate mousse cake, and a red velvet cupcake. The cupcake frosting was wonderful- very creamy and not too sweet and even held up in the heat of the car on the ride home- I think we all could have had just that. The cupcake itself was dry and tasted a little funky none of us wanted to eat it so we just split the frosting. The slice of chocolate mousse cake was a milk chocolate so not my favorite (I'm a dark chocolate gal), however my friend ate it and loved it but thought the cake part was too dry so he ate the ganache frosting and the mousse filling and left the cake. The ladyfinger cookie was a small ladyfinger split and filled with raspberry jam and dipped in chocolate. Sounds great - but there was too little jam and it left it rather dry and unspectacular. My daughter ate the ice cream flavored cookie, or rather tasted it. She gave it back to me and said "can I have something else?" Yeah she's 4 years old so that pretty much says it all. I gave it 2 stars simply because I could not taste the major attraction so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on it. Honestly though, I don't think I'll go back and try it. read more

My husband and I chose Marcella to bake our wedding cake after many faulty tastings. Neither of us were particularly interested in having "the most beautiful cake evar", and it seems most places put more effort into decoration than flavour. Not Marcella, she makes the most delicious cake I've ever had, and everyone at the wedding commented on the quality and flavour of our cake. This is what a bakery ought to be. They even have butterhorns, which are not easy to find and properly made at that. One rarely sees such a wide variety of items. I couldn't eat it all to test it, but things like the bear claws and Danish just looked right. We left with a stash of cookies. We've visited here twice and won't miss it in the future. read more

One of my colleagues brought in breakfast treats from Scandia about six months ago, and she told me that they make great cakes! So when planning my mother's 83rd birthday party, I decided to give them a try. The cake was divine. Perfectly light and the raspberry moose frosting was to die for. I'll just put this out here. Princess cake. Get it and eat it. Either a whole cake or by the slice. If you buy a slice you should also get an Americano or your espresso drink of choice. Princess cake is alone justification for 5 stars, but I need to also let you know about their Christmas cookies. My mother in law brings a batch of these to our house each Christmas and they are incredible. Highly underrated. If you bring these somewhere people will invite you in. Seriously. Highly recommended. Planned a weekend in Sonoma for a 40th birthday. I looked at pictures from Yelp and thought that Scandia was the best choice in town for a cake. So, I called 3 weeks before our trip to order it. I asked for an "over the top" cake for a 40th birthday. Money no object - just needs to be super fancy and elaborate. I then called one week out to confirm the order and emphasize what I wanted. Well, when I came to pick up the cake, the cake was an ordinary boring cake that I could have gotten from Safeway. The cake was also a dry crumbly mess and inedible...probably the worst cake we ever had. So disappointing - especially because they charged me so much. This is cute little place for a treat, but I wouldn't trust them to make a special occasion cake. read more

Scandia did the most beautiful cake for my daughter's Sweet 16 party! I am so grateful for to owner Marcela Barrenechea for the time she took with us and the care she put into this cake. She took a photo of a cake with a "sea" theme -- seahorses, turtles, kelp -- my daughter Ashleigh found online, made some suggestions and created what my daughter and I think was even better than the photo! But that's part of the charm of this bakery --- Marcela and her staff took the TIME to let us taste the cake and the fillings, make suggestions about the design and she personally delivered the cake and had the idea to use crushed graham crackers to look like sand! Will I go back to Scandia for cakes and refer my friends? Absolutely! And now that I know they serve sandwiches and salads, I will be back for those too! One of my favorite Bakery's in the city of Sonoma, I love the location too! I can get all my errands done in one run to town. My favorite's at Scandia Bakery is the "cinnamon pull-apart bread" and the Princess Cake -no words describe the deliciousness here! Hurry though in the morning to take part in the cinnamon pull-apart, the bakery owner only makes a few for the day. You can buy a half or a full loaf or pre order as many as you'd like! It makes a nice sit around the table sweetness with tea or coffee time with friends or family. read more

Amazing pecan pull apart bread and the best princess cake... a must stop destination in Sonoma

This is a bakery in a mall. It is run by a cute Bolivian woman who you just want to give a hug to. This location and this woman are both very unassuming because they have RIDICULOUSLY amazing cakes here. Specifically i am taking about the Princess Cake. We've been looking at places to get our wedding cake. As far as I'm concerned the Princess Cake is the winner. It is the cake every girl dreams about. Princess Cake is apparently a Scandinavian specialty and this sweet little Bolivian knocks it out of the park. The cake itself is substantial. Not too light like those Safeway sheet cakes. It has some toothiness (this is the best word I can use to describe this cake), and a good vanilla flavor. It has layers of raspberry jam and light whipped cream. It is all covered by a tasty marzipan layer. None of that fondant crap. When you cut into the cake with your fork it gives only a little before cutting through the whole cake. We had it right out of the case and everything was just amazing. We also tried their chocolate mousse. I promise you it is better than any chocolate mousse or pudding you will have ever tried. If you find yourself in Sonoma, this place is right off the downtown plaza. I HIGHLY recommend you go there. read more

I'm not going to lie, I had never even heard of a Swedish Princess cake before, and I'm not even that big of a cake fan, but man alive did this cake elevate my appreciation for not only cake, but the Swedes as well. I was looking for a birthday cake for a certain gentleman of discerning taste and a highly refined palate, so I was a bit apprehensive putting all my eggs in one basket, sight unseen, no direct references, on this bakery, but speaking over the phone with the friendly staff and multiple reassurances that it was indeed a great cake, I pulled the trigger and commissioned a beach themed cake birthday cake. Fast forward to the day I picked up the cake, the beach theme turned out surprisingly well considering I didn't give much direction save to say, "beach theme, go", and then I cut a slice for the birthday boy, roommate and myself... blissful. The texture, cool temperature, sweetness level, layers of cream, cake, curd and jam in perfect harmony with the thin layer of marzipan encasing the cake was sheer perfection in one bite. I can't even begin to explain how amazing it was. Basically, this noncake person has been eating leftover cake for breakfast with coffee for the past few days. So, would I recommend Scandia Bakery? Yes. Would I want to be a Swedish Princess every day? Yes. Would I order more cake from Scandia in the future? Absofuckinglutely. I've had a princess cake for my birthday every year for the last 21 years or so. When I was young, the even used to shape them like frogs for me. This is the best princess cake you will ever have, no doubt. A thin delicious layer of green or tan marzipan covers fresh whipped topping and raspberry puree with delicious custard and delicate white cake. Oh my god! I've only had princess cake from one other place and decided at that time I would never ever stray from Scandia for that particular cake again. Aside from the exceptional princess cake, Scandia also make these delectable little chocolate covered mocha macaroons that I've never seen anywhere else. I bring them as a treat for the ladies in my office sometimes or simply bring the box home and consume them myself in fornt of the TV. EIther way. Their pastries and other cookies are quite decent as well. They have fresh soups and sandwiches on lunch special during the week and they make the best, most reasonably priced mocha in all of downtown Sonoma. Shhhhhh. That's my secret. This is a really cool place to meet up and have a cup of coffee or tea if you're not looking for the hustle and bustle of Starbucks or one of the other trendy coffee places around the square. I love Scandia Bakery. It prompted some of my early secret eatings- when I really fell in love with baked things. I used to go here and buy a small seasonal fruit tart, two raspberry pockets and a single mocha con panna. For those who do not fancy coffee, I warn you- Scandia's mocha con panna's are the gateway drug. You will become a faithful lover of espresso if you begin with these drinks. They spoon their house-whipped whipping cream from a silver bowl. The interior is shabby, and they are tucked in the unglamorous corner of the Sonoma Marketplace, next to Blockbuster. I try to visit when I am back in my hometown and can spare the calories. There are always local papers scattered about and elderly couples enjoying a morning coffee together. Just walking through the door takes me back to the time when my metabolism hummed along like a jumbo jet and "calories" were something I had to study in Chemistry class. read more
