If you live in the Rockville area and own a Saab or Volvo thank your lucky stars you have an expert shop like this near you! Independent mechanics who know these makes do not grow on trees and there are lots of quirky things that specialists are likely to know much better than generic indie garages. I went for a pre-purchase inspection and they were amazing. They have a ton of bays so getting a quick appointment was very easy. Bogdan (sp?) was great and offered real insight into the exact car I was looking to purchase. I've taken my Volvo (...and before that my Saab) to Scandinavian Import Service Center a number of times over the years, and everything other reviewers say about fair pricing and honesty is correct, but... ... On January 11th I was there first thing in the morning for a battery replacement and alignment. There was no sign on the door stating Scandinavian's masking policy, and nobody at the service desk was masked. (Montgomery County, MD's indoor masking requirement went back into effect in late November 2021 and had not be lifted as of the 11th.) I asked if Scandinavian would implement the requirement since I would be waiting for my Volvo, and the tiny waiting area is about 10 feet from the service desk. The answer was, "No." At that point, I told them to take me off the schedule and walked out. Now... I get that, on the service floor, there might be a safety issue with masking, and the county requirement takes that into account. But at the service desk, during the worst COVID surge we've seen since the start of the pandemic, I expect a business to comply and protect their customers. Regretfully... I won't be back. read more

I have a Volvo V50- those of you who own one will understand- it is not the best Volvo ever made, BUT the guys at Scandinavian auto have kept it running for Waaaay longer than it should. They look for ways to AVOID large bills and fixing things "just in case". Recent example: I had a problem with the temperature sensor which had to be fixed, but they fixed the connector in order to avoid having to replace the whole unit. That didn't work, and they had to replace the sensor after all. They didn't charge me for the sensor. If anyone knows a dealer who will do that I would like to hear it. read more

The key to maintaining a European car to the Moon and back is a great mechanic and timely maintenance. It's difficult to find a reasonably-priced, clean, efficient shop with staffed with individuals who care about your car as much as you do. Scandinavian Import Servicecenter is that place, which is where my two Volvos go. My last service was a timing belt and general lookover on my decade-old wagon nearing 200k miles. The service was done in less than a day, was significantly less money that a similar service on a Honda or Toyota, and there was even a shuttle service to take me to work. Squeaking and grinding - I knew my brakes needed to be replaced. I looked over them myself and figured at least the front pads and maybe the rear rotors. A previous shop in silver spring looked at my car and recommend that I replace both front and rear break pads and rotors. That shop quoted me at $960! I nearly fainted when I heard it would cost nearly 1 grand to fix my car. This was even more than my dealer quoted me last time. ($800) I called up a mechanic I trusted back in Cali where I'm from and he recommended me to these guys at Scandinavian Import Servicenter. They looked my car over and said all I really needed was the front pads to be replaced, everything else was in decent shaped and could be replaced later on. I took my 335i here for a good walnut blasting clean up, I made an appointment 2 weeks before coming in the job takes about 4-5 hours depending on how dirty the valves are. I dropped my car off in the morning and returned later that day to pick it up waited about 2 hours in their lobby (which looks very clean) but unfortunately the car wouldn't be ready until the following day, I was kinda disappointed but nonetheless the job was done the following day. I recommend them to get the walnut blasting done since they are cheaper than the dealer. I would request pictures of before and after the cleaning for your records. Cheers! read more

I bought the actual Volvo $68 windshield wipers from them instead of cheaper ones yet had a problem with the left one leaving streaks of water. Rubber may have been old since I have an older XC90. They texted me to come back. They installed a new set of Volvo wipers when I returned a few weeks later. read more

My parents have two Saabs and these guys are the only they trust. And believe me, we are there often. (We have older cars that are oft-used and get a lot of miles.) They are always honest about what repairs you need and will tell you if you can get away with something less pricey. On the few occasions that they have made an error or miss something, they fix it, no questions asked. Their quotes are less than others, and they have no problem telling you they can't take care of something and will recommend someone they trust. They are very congenial guys, always a pleasure to work with. They try to fix your car as soon as possible, with as little hassle as they can. They call and keep you updated. They've even come in early to do some emergency work for us. We heart them muchly. They have after-hours drop-offs, so if you can't stop by during regular business hours, you have no worries. And they have complimentary rides to Rockville metro station when they are open. These are the best guys we have worked with, we always feel safe--un-scathed and un-scammed--when we go here. Being a female with a troublesome car can be difficult. I'd hate to say I fit the stereotype of a female who knows nothing about cars, but it's true. I don't know anything about my car. I put gas in it and pray it gets me from point A to point B. I've been to a number of places to have my car fixed. My dad has always instilled in me the notion that people jack up prices to fix your car and I should not trust anyone. When I moved further from home and my dad was no longer around to tinker with my car, however, I was in trouble. I've been to a little bit of everything - small shops in the back alley of a suspicious street, the standard Jiffy Lube, and could definitely not afford higher end places that certainly will overcharge me. At Scandinavian, they don't treat you like another somebody who doesn't know anything. They take the time to answer your questions and understand that we're not all loaded with money. I appreciate their integrity and their honesty. Additionally, the owner is one of the kindest people I have ever met. When talking to him, you can instantly feel that he cares about you and your car. The staff as a whole do. I am not receiving the fast talk, sell me a bunch of stuff I don't need nonsense. Similarly, I don't receive the judgmental, your car is going to die in the middle of the road if you don't do this super expensive thing you don't need look. They understand if I want to delay one or two things until I can get my finances in order. They help me evaluate my priorities for my car and help keep my car running with my budget in mind. This place is so incredible, I bought my car from them without even test driving it... I was out of town for a month, saw a 2005 Volvo V70R posted for sale and called and spoke with Alan who was just the nicest guy to ever deal with. I put in a small deposit and they held the car for me, when I finally got back in town I test drove the car and absolutely fell in love. The entire shop makes you feel like you're at home. Everyone in the service bay has a great attitude and the shop is very clean, they were very honest in what the car excels at and what issues the car might have; this is very rare for a dealership to do, normally they just take your money and send you on your way. The owner of the dealership really knows his product and has a true passion for the cars he deals with. The mechanics in the service bay are completely dedicated to Volvos, Saabs. BMWs and Minis, you feel very comfortable talking to any one of them, you can tell they really know these cars inside and out, especially Edwin who worked on my car before it was sold to me. When it came time to do paperwork, the staff was very helpful and patient with the insurance companies and they even did all the work that you normally do at the MVA so you don't even have to go to the hell hole that is the MVA afterward. I walked out of there with everything completely done, it was so easy. I have never owned a Volvo before but now I'm hooked for life, this car is incredible! Don't buy your car anywhere else, this place is great! Updated Review: The experience at the Service Center has always been great. I brought my car in for a cold start/rough idle issue. They had the car 3 days. They said they could not reproduce the problem and everything looked OK. Their only guess was that it needed new plugs because mine were very worn. For good measure, I had them clean the throttle body. After three days in their care I pick up the car at 10:30 at night after spending $245 on the work they did. Cold start- rough idle! Even dimmed the lights. I give my keys back to them through the night slot and ask them to look again. I even send them 2 e-mails asking them not to start the car until I am there tomorrow and can actually point out what I'm talking about [because the problem is not intermittent, it is predictable]. I get an e-mail from them the next morning- very brief- "We'll take a look at it later this morning." I respond: "Please do not start it until I get there." I drive the 30 minutes from DC to Rockville and see.....my car is not where I left it. They started it up, even though I asked them not to, and they said everything looked just fine! The tech tells me they replaced a cracked PCV hose that may have been my culprit. $85 dollars, please. I take a long lunch- as long as I can extend it in an area I don't know to allow the engine to cool down. Try the car and it does start fine [but I felt the engine before starting- it was still warmish]. I come back that night with my wife [who has been dragged out three times on this errand by this point]. Engine turns over.....wait three seconds.....sputter, sputter, engine movement. Mother. F*****. The sputtering actually got a little worse when I put the car in R and backed up. I concede defeat, $329 lighter. There are 2 possibilities: 1] The tech is not being very observant when he starts it cold. He is sitting in the driver's seat and does not get out of the car to look at the engine shortly after it starts [to view the sputtering engine]....and he thinks everything is fine. 2] The car is possessed by a malevolent spirit that is trying, and succeeding, to drive a wedge between me and the Scandinavian staff by misbehaving for me every. single. cold. start. and by not doing a thing at all when they start it up. #2 is more interesting, but I think #1 is more likely. Update, 5/2/14: The Friday after I posted this review they called me and asked to have the car again. They said they'd put the money I'd already spent towards whatever else they have to do to the car. I drop it off for a week and they cannot reproduce the problem. They are very courteous and very polite and very committed to helping me. Phil, the service manager, even took it home to see if he could get it to misbehave but to no avail. A week later I pick it up at night [I can do the drive from Upper NW DC out to Rockville via the Cabin John Parkway with my eyes closed at this point], start it up and...engine shook and shuttered slightly. Again. The next day's cold start was a little hard even [although it did start and run well]. Now, this is a very vague and subtle "problem" and the car mostly runs fine so perhaps this is just the new normal for a 170K mile car. Not great service started by telling us the appt made online didn't work and we'd need to wait a week. Replaced the computer after a month in the shop and ruined a new battery in the process. After we picked up the car the heat didn't work and the trunk remote didn't work. Took the car back and they charged us for tracing the trunk to needing to reset the ecm which was clearly faulted when they replaced the computer. No chance I'd give them another repair just a bunch of parts changers with no ability or customer service. read more

I live in Massachusetts and I was on my way to MOTD 2013 (MINIs on the Dragon) when my 2005 MINI Cooper S died on the 495 loop around DC. I quickly googled for a MINI service center in the area and they were the first listing I found. After a quick call to them, I was pleased by the conversation and that they said they work on MINIs all the time. When the tow truck arrived, I had it loaded up and brought right over to them. I know a lot about these cars and I knew exactly what the problem was with it (crank shaft pulley failed), which they confirmed that it most likely would be the problem (without even taking a look at it first). I explained to them that we need to get back on the road as soon as possible and they said they would do everything they could to get my MINI up on a lift to get it repaired today. They then set us up with a discounted Enterprise rental car and even drove us to rental place. They also provided us with a lot of different things to go and do in the area while they took a look at it. So we went to get some food and try to plan out the rest of the day if we couldn't get my MINI fixed that day. After a couple hours, we headed back there just to check in to see if they had a chance to look at it. We had literally just stepped out of the rental car when they were calling me. They found the problem (exactly what I thought it was), and provided me with an estimate (much less than what I thought it was going to be). They had the part available and would be able to get it installed within just a few hours. So we went out to the rental car and watched a movie on our laptop. After 2 hours, the movie ended and we decided to go back in and just wait there until it was ready. We walked in and I saw them pulling my MINI out of the garage! I was supremely impressed how fast they were able to get it repaired! They even called Enterprise for us to have them come get the rental car so we could get back on the road even faster. It literally took them 5 hours from the moment I dropped off my MINI to get it looked at and repaired. Any MINI dealer wouldn't have been able to get that done! And then the price for the repair was about half what I was expecting. Hell, even the OEM part from the dealer costs almost what they charged me for the complete repair! I am not from the area, but I would recommend them in a heartbeat! If you need any work done to your MINI, they will be able to fix it for a decent price, and they know what they're doing! read more

I bought a used Volvo here two weeks ago. It was an easy, no pressure process. In the course of inspecting the car, my mechanic discovered an oil seepage problem, and I uncovered a couple of other minor issues. I took the car back to SIS and they fixed everything--no charge, no hassle. A 30-day guarantee is a good thing to have when you buy any used car, and they live up to theirs. (There's also a more limited six month warranty I hope I don't have to use.) Nice, friendly, knowledgeable car people--I'm glad we found them! read more

Bottom line: honest shop, willing to educate customers on their vehicle, good pricing. Took my older Volvo in to SIS because it was feeling its age a bit. I told Clyde what my concerns were and he asked some additional questions about the issues - he is kind of like a calmer version of the guys from Car Talk. The SIS guys took a look at the car and called me later that day with their findings. Clyde fielded my several questions and, surprisingly, also asked about what my goals were with the car: Did I plan to upgrade soon or drive it into the ground for years? Did I have any long road trips coming up? He gave some options based on my specific situation. In my case, some solid after-market parts helped make it a much more affordable repair while still being adequately reliable over my planned length of ownership. He even helped set me up to fix a minor repair on my own to avoid some of the cost; amazing. The repairs were completed within the schedule we agreed to and I have not had any more problems with those issues. The facilities seemed quite safe and are well-maintained. In the waiting area there is coffee available and seating for maybe 5 people. The location is 1.5 miles from Shady Grove Metro, and 2 miles from Rockville Metro -- there is bus service and SIS can pick up/drop off at the metro during business hours. I agree with these reviews; I would definitely recommend Scandinavian for Volvo service. read more

I've been taking my cars to Scandinavian for about nine years now. There is no Volvo specialist in the D.C. metro area that even compares, making it well worth my drive from Alexandria. They are always up-front and honest about repairs and pricing. Their customer service is excellent. And their prices are a fraction of what dealerships charge, despite always using OEM parts. Free rides to the Metro/rental car office are just the icing on the cake. I put considerable mileage on my car, so I am a frequent customer. I've never had a bad experience with them. I've dealt with these guys for years on common repairs for my Saabs and Volvos, but this time I really needed something special. My 2009 Volvo S60 had a terrible turning radius. There was nothing wrong or broken, that's just how Volvo made these cars that were equipped with 17" wheels. It was so bad that it was impossible to make u-turns that any other car would have no problem doing. This otherwise great car was less maneuverable than my Chevy Tahoe! Just pulling into a normal parking space would require backing up to make the arc. It drove me crazy! I told them about it and they figured out how to modify the car so it would turn sharper. Only these guys with their depth of knowledge and great attitude would even bother to try to figure this out, let alone be able to do it. I just picked it up and now it turns like a normal car. Used to be good, but something has changed. Maybe too many inexperienced mechanics. Finding an EVAP leak can be challenging and some people don't want to do the work. However they did charge me $180.00 to look at it and turn the check engine light off. Fumes are still filling cabin everyday and that is not normal. A woman is not always taken seriously by mechanics. I was told by the manager at Jiffy Lube that I had hit the bottom of the car on something and that had damaged something. Too bad Jiffy Lube doesn't fix cars. read more
