4:30 this morning traveling south on Rt.270 there was an explosion under the hood of my car! I was traveling fast enough to warrant keeping the momentum and making it to work on time. I drove over 50 miles with my engine making sounds akin to small motor boat. After I started my daily duties thoughts of impending doom took over. What broke? Can I fix it? How bad is it? How much is it going to cost? Am I going to have to buy a new car on my way home? Am I going to be able to make it home? My mind raced (I'm sure the coffee helped). I contacted Volvo Specialists and they were kind enough to counsel me and offered assistance if I could get the car to their shop. They were booked solid and were in recovery mode from a little miss hap in the shop with a rather large tool box. Long story short, Volvo Specialists saved the day. Experienced, Honest, and Fair as the day is long! Less than an hour after my car limped into their parking lot, I was out back on the road like nothing happened! I have so much gratitude for Volvo Specialists! If you find yourself in need of a good honest repair shop, do yourself a favor and stop in and see the good folks at Volvo Specialists! STAY AWAY! This is the only time I've had them do work and I will never go back. They claimed there was a major problem that could ruin my timing belt if not fixed, they quoted well over $1000 for the job. Fortunately, thank god, I was skeptical, took it to another mechanic who said there was no problem, repair not needed. They also claimed my rear brakes needed work, which they didn't. Service was good, but upon picking up our vehicle, we found the car parked all the way in the front of the business near the street with the the front windows open and keys left on the dash. The person helping us said the car has been out there since they opened in the morning and it was 2pm when we went to pick up. When my husband expressed surprise that this was normal practice for them, they stated they've never had any issue and tell all their customers to remove their valuables...hm what about the valuable car you left open and unlocked with the keys to steal the car in plain view for any passerbyer to see/take? Their business is in a predominantly industrial area by the train tracks, so it wouldn't be hard for someone to take advantage this situation. What makes it even more inappropriate is that because the service was finished closer to the end of the day the day before they offered to leave our keys in the cars tail pipe so we could pick up the car after hours, and we told them we weren't comfortable with that and to please lock up the car so we can pick up the keys from them the next day. This lack of care is really disappointing. We hope the business changes this practice as they do a provide a good service and we'd like to continue to use their service and to hopefully feel safe doing so. read more

I had my Volvo towed here. I was told the engine had a hole in it and any repair would be at least $10,000. The car was 8 years old and I declined their offer to fix. They insisted I tow the car off of their property immediately or face significant storage costs. Two days later they had the car towed to the City of Rockville's abandoned car lot where it was scheduled to be auctioned off. The customer service is awful--Larissa is so rude. Their estimate was unreasonable. I can hardly believe people recommend this place. Bethesda Import Specialists on Butler Road is much better--nicer people, great service. Avoid Volvo Specialists in Rockville. Horrible people. read more

They are dependable and affordable. I never feel taken advantage of with the likes of some "shady mechanics". As a long time car owner who tends to keep them till the are fully dead I am aware of how difficult it is to identify intermittent problems. I got a phone call the next morning with what I consider an honest appraisal of what the problem may be and the most reasonable approach to a solution. Larissa was extremely rude from the beginning to the end. I dropped off my volvo s40 to get a quote to get the "check engine" light fixed. She didn't call me for the quote until I called her. She said it's going to be $1200 to get the set of spark plugs replaced. After I got the car fixed, the turn signal switch was broken and she denied that it's her fault. Aftrer over $ 14,000.00 worth of business, Volvo Specialties's Brad Walsh treated me like filth. Here's my sad history with the afore-mentioned. Don't let the same mistake happen to you even once around. Mr. McGrath had been a loyal customer of Volvo Specialties for several years up until the summer of 2006. In June of 2006, Mr. McGrath brought his 1980 Volvo 240 into Volvo Specialties for major body repair work resulting from a rear-end collision. Rather than complete the work himself, Mr. Walsh subcontracted the body work out to an as yet unnamed entity. The repairs took in excess of 50 days to complete, twice as long as indicated by Walsh when the car was brought in. The party that rear-ended Mr. McGrath falsely stated that he had car insurance when in fact he did not and encouraged Mr. McGrath to send him the bill for the repairs as well as for renting a car. As a result, he was not yet able to process the accident through his own insurance company. By the time Mr. McGrath was finally able to process a claim through his own insurance company, the 50 days exceeded the company's limit for car rental reimbursement and Mr. McGrath suffered a loss of approximately $ 2,700 for additional rental car use. After Mr. McGrath appealed to his insurance company, however, they offered to reconsider the amount paid for the use of a rental car if provided written verification of the need for the extra time from the repair shop. But Mr. Walsh refused to provide the needed document, complaining that it was a "colossal task" he did not have time for. Neither was he willing to divulge to Mr. McGrath the name of the body shop that actually performed the work. As a direct result, Mr. McGrath was forced to pay the additional rental fees himself. Mr. McGrath appealed to Mr. Walsh, in writing, to at least refund him $ 500 to alleviate the loss. He reminded Mr. Walsh of the over $ 12,000 in business he provided him with up to that point; for work done at Mr. Walsh's leisure not his. Mr. Walsh ignored the letter and, in a phone conversation, acted as though it was none of his concern; that he didn't even know Mr. McGrath was renting a car; that he was "real sorry you were stiffed by the other guy." Unbelievable callousness and deceit. He knew I was renting a car because I had asked him if he could give me a ride to the rental office the very day I showed up with the tow truck that delivered my car. After picking up the rental car, I actually drove in it to see him to drop off paperwork. Finally, during this same time period of June 12 to July 26, 2006 Volvo Specialties, performed brake work on Mr. McGrath's vehicle after getting permission from Mr. McGrath based on an verbal estimate of $ 400 to $ 500 dollars cost. This was done after the vehicle was returned to Volvo Specialties by unidentified body shop. When the final invoice for the brake work was presented, the charge for the brake work was $ 1,300. Volvo Specialties' own standard invoice includes a paragraph that states that the customer may not be charged more that 10% of the amount that exceeds an estimate without his consent. No such consent was asked for or given. Mr. Walsh refused to honor this. Some months earlier, Mr. McGrath bought, paid for and had shipped to Volvo Specialties for installation a turn signal switch, which was never installed or returned. The total cost of this part was $ 25 dollars. Mr. McGrath also informed Mr. Walsh at the time he was once again able to take possession of his vehicle that a spare aluminum alloy wheel hub was missing from the trunk of the sedan. Mr. Walsh stated he'd scrounge around for another but never contacted Mr. McGrath regarding either its recovery or replacement. The replacement value of the hub was $ 150. Over the years Mr. McGrath made repeated requests for cooperation yet Volvo Specialties remained utterly unresponsive. At one point he consulted an attorney to write a letter that Mr. Walsh refused even to acknowledge. After seven years passed, Mr. McGrath made a cordial request in writing to Mr. Walsh asking to be reimbursed for the turn signal switch--including a copy of the shipping receipt--and the alloy wheel, costs totaling a mere $ 175.00. He followed up with a phone call and was bluntly told by Mr. Walsh "buddy, you are delusional, mentally ill and hostile! I'm not paying you one red dime! Don't ever call me again!" Mr. McGrath provided Volvo Specialities with over $ 14,000 of work over several years and was given a hat with Volvo Specialities's logo for his loyal patronage. read more

I gave 5 stars for the great customer service. I Just dropped my Volvo off @ Volvo Specialists. I was greeted by Brad. We spoke on the phone prior to me going to the shop. He provided some background information on the issues I was experiencing with my vehicle. He appears to be quite knowledgeable with regards to Volvos, this is his specialty. I also met Lorisa and their enormous Saint Bernard (can't remember her name). I found them all to be very pleasant and easy listeners. I love my Volvo, she (Lucy) is a 2008 XC90 and has been very dependable and reliable. Lately, she 's had a few service lights on the dash. I've taken her to the dealership only to be overcharged and handed a laundry list of other unnecessary repairs. I am looking for an auto mechanic that offers fair prices, excellent repair history and one that will not gouge me for every penny I have. I was referred to this shop by another mechanic, who spoke highly of Brad and Lorisa. I've read other's reviews and it appears that everyone is very happy with the service they receive here. I'm hoping this will be my new repair shop. Keeping my fingers crossed. I will update this post once my vehicle has been repaired. I hope she comes out running smoothly. I first went to them for a post-purchase inspection on a 2005 Volvo S60 R, and my biggest regret was not taking it here for a PRE-purchase inspection. They found serious problems with the engine, which I was then able to bring to the attention of the selling dealer for them to repair it. It took that dealer more than two months to fix the car and, thanks to having Larissa and the folks at Volvo Specialist re-inspect the car, I found that the work still wasn't done correctly by the dealer; the caR is sorted now, many thanks to this shop. I cannot express my appreciation enough to them for catching the things they did. Without them, my timing belt would have broken a long time ago, leaving me the proud owner of a picnic table and five chairs. This shop is not pretty and perfect; you can't perform surgery on their floors, but I would trade a hundred dealers and/or shops with perfectly tiled floors and large glass fronts for one place like this that actually takes care of and goes to bat for their customers. read more

I went there to install an Elevate downpipe and exhaust system on my S60R. Got there on a Friday late afternoon. We ran into some issues removing the old downpipe since the bolts seized over all these years. These guys stayed after work hour to get the job done so I could get my car for the week-end, Super professional and client oriented team! Larisa did the entire diagnostic and ran down all the points needed to get me back on the road. Volvo Specialists is the best! Fair prices, good work, and awesome customer service. We are so glad that we came here after years of going to the dealer. The dealer was happy to take our money and didn't much care if the problem was solved (which it was not). In comparison, Volvo Specialists is absolutely wonderful. Their work is great -- and best of all they have honesty and integrity. They clearly take pride in their work and it shows. Earlier this week they refused to charge me for a simple fix even though they spent 20 minutes making sure the issue was resolved. Last year they refused to charge for time spent trying to air out the car following a water leak. (This was after we paid the dealer for a fix that missed the problem).
