I went to Scannicchio's on Saturday night with my family. It was good, solid italian food...not my absolute favorite BYO italian place in Philly, but it was good enough to make our trip worthwhile and I'm not opposed to going back. The appetizers were the best part -- the grilled romaine, sausage with figs, caesar salad -- they were all fantastic. We all ordered pasta as our main course. Although I'm not sure if the bread, pasta and sauces were home-made, the meals were solid. The staff were incredibly friendly and our waitress gave us free lemoncello after our meal. read more

I can not say enough about Scannicchio's, it is by far my favorite BYOB. My husband and I have been to this restaurant at least 40 times and we have never had anything we didn't like. The staff is so accommodating especially if you have certain food restrictions or are constantly dieting like myself. I have sent numerous friends and coworkers to Schannicchio's and everyone has always raved about their food. I can not recommend the fillet with crab meat and the dream tartufo more. read more

We joined friends here one Saturday evening (with a reservation made only a couple of days ahead, but I suggest a reservation it is probably a good idea) and as soon as we entered the restaurant we felt immediately welcomed as if we were a part of the owners' family! It is rather small, but we never felt crammed at all and were even able to hold a great conversation. The Italian food was, by far, some of the best we have ever tried - cooked to perfection and reasonably priced; our server (I can not recall her name) was prompt and very friendly and we had a wonderful, wonderful evening. I wish we lived closer - we can not wait to come back and truly recommend trying this restaurant. read more

This was one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. The service was great and there was never a point that my boyfriend and I felt rushed. We started off with the Insalata Mista, very fresh and the house dressing was very tasty. For appetizers we had the Fried meatball special, over a bed of sautéed spinach, fried calamari, and white mussels. All were delicious the meatballs were nice and crispy on the outside, the calamari was fried perfectly, and the white sauce for the mussels was full of flavor. For our entrees, my boyfriend got the filet with lump crabmeat on top with a side of veggies and mashed potatoes, he ate every bite. I got the fettuccine Alfredo with sundried tomatoes and broccoli. Once again everything was amazing. You can tell right away you're eating fresh homemade pasta and the sauce was so rich and creamy. Finally for dessert he got the Italian ice cream sandwich which was two pizzelles on the outside with hazelnut gelato,Nutella, whipped cream and strawberries. Mine was some type of chocolate shelled dessert with peanut butter gelato on the inside top with whipped cream and strawberries. Both were delicious. Went there tonight for the first time with a party of 14. We had a pre-determined menu. The food was mediocre to bad. Given the plethora of amazing Italian American restaurants within spitting distance - this was really disappointing. And even more disappointing was the staff. They all seemed really unhappy to be there and unhappy we were there. Rude and unsmiling. (The only friendly person was the bus person - he was lovely.) And they told us quite abruptly after dessert that we needed to leave (immediately) because they needed to seat another party. I worked in restaurants for years - and it was very unprofessional and done very rudely. Sometimes you do have to ask a larger party to move along - but do it with some grace and some forewarning. I tried to buy my Dad a gift card to Scannicchio's to use before a Flyers game and was told that I would have to come in to purchase the gift card due to "previous bad experiences". I told both the women and gentleman I spoke with that I live out of state (over 3 hours away) and would not be able to come in person and would pay postage, etc. to have it sent to me so I could include the gift card in my Dad's Christmas present. They said "it just can't be done" and that I could call back to speak with an owner but they didn't think it was likely they would "approve" it. WHAT?! When I read reviews about this being a family owned business I thought they would be HAPPY to help me out. I've done this with numerous other restaurants and have NEVER had a problem. They also said that since they didn't know me and I wasn't a regular it wasn't going to happen. WELL, that is certainly a way to deter new customers. I called another Italian restaurant down the street and my experience was exactly opposite. They were happy to help me give them my money and help me give my Dad a thoughtful Christmas gift. We had been here twice before and loved it. Was excited to use a restaurant.com gift cert that I had purchased. Left it on the table so the waiter could see. He came over picked it up - looked at the date and told me it was expired. Now you and I both know that restaurant.com gift certs don't expire. But I decided it wasn't worth a fight. Waiter either hated us or hated his job or was not feeling well/sick. Anyway - him reciting the specials was uncomfortable. However - here's the skinny on our meal: Insalata mista was so vinegar-laden that it was basically inedible. I wanted to not eat it - to leave it nearly untouched - in order to send a silent message that it was not good. But I was so hungry. Black & green olives? That's kinda weird to have them both in a salad? Her roasted beet salad was delicious. Her filet was tough & the potatoes stale with burnt ends that gave them an overall smoky/burnt taste. She did say the filet was cooked to the right temp (mid rare) & the coffee was good. My shrimp fra diablo was good - sauce was very fresh. Won't be back though. S Philly has so many good Italian restaurants, don't need to keep trying this one. Poinsettias were still out - In April. It breaks my heart to throw them out, but if I owned/ran a business they would be removed with the Christmas decorations. read more

Love this place. How is this place still in business with the huge portions you get! The food is very authentic and old family style italian. BYOB which is always awesome. Barely 100 feet from a formidable competitor, L'Angolo, is the bigger and every bit as friendly Scinicchios. Large portions and reasonable prices a bonus as the food is excellent. Pork and chicken dishes savory and moist and the pasta good with the gnocchi marvelous; and just light enough to satisfy those who still like a bit of heft in their little dumplings. Went to Scannicchio's with my dad for dinner this summer. I grew up as part of a large italian family with lots of good cooks, so I definitely have a preconceived notion of what my typical traditional meal should be like. This place is exactly what I am looking for in a real south Philly italian restaurant. We came early (5:30) on a week night, and the only other customer was an old italian man who looked to be about 85. The host greeted us warmly and even got our names as we were seated. We opened a nice bottle of red (byo) and settled in for a great meal. We started out with the fresh bread, some broccoli rabe, and my dad had the stuffed artichoke (excellent and very traditional) and I had the special: tower of grilled eggplant, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella with balsalmic- amazingly good. Being a huge eggplant fan I tried the eggplant parm for dinner which was also delicious, but my dad's meal was truly the standout: stuffed calamari in a red sauce. The calamar tasted exactly the way that my grandmother used to make it for the holidays, it really brought my dad back to his childhood. The flavors were great, the sauce very rich with the flavors of the seafood. It was a treat eating this meal that we usually reserve for Christmas eve. After finishing our wine, the manager brought out some of his homemade pineapple-cello which i could not get enough of. So delicious. I was happy that I didn't have to drive us home. I would definitely recommend this place for a great traditional italian meal. My family and I went here last night for my mother's Birthday and from start to finish the food was excellent! I had a Caesar salad that was amazing. I know it's not hard to make a Caesar salad but the lettuce was crisp, the dressing was perfect and the shaved parmesan on top completed it. For my main course I had the pollo bianco which is chicken, sausage and peppers sautéed in a white wine, lemon sauce. It was phenomenal. It was light and didn't feel to heavy on my stomach. I was able to have dessert, there were 6 of us and we ordered 3 desserts and shared. I had the "Italian ice cream sandwich" which is hazelnut gelato and nutella between two pizelles. Again, amazing. My sisters ordered the chocolate ganache cake. Chocolate cake with a peanut butter mousse inside, covered in ganache. Do I even need to tell you if we liked it? I can't remember the name of the other dessert, it was ice cream covered in a chocolate coating. with a caramel center, very good. The owner gave us all shots of arancello to salute my mom's Birthday. It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. I will be back. read more

This restaurant, opened 11 years ago by no one named Scannicchio, is family owned and it feels like it, in the best possible way. BYO vino, but not any pretension. I made a reservation for this restaurant for a Christmas luncheon with my coworkers. Worked in the area for ages and never tried it. Heard mixed reviews. Mostly food great- staff rude. Still, I was willing to try something different. Made a reservation for 15. They let me know another party of 15 would be there at the same time. One by one my coworkers dropped out for various reasons. I was already upset and annoyed with the situation, but the right thing to do was to call and change the reservation asap. I called several times before getting someone. The man on the phone was extremely rude. He was telling me how rude and inconsiderate I was for doing this last minute. I agreed with him that it was rude, but I explained I had no control over the situation. I apologized profusely. I still wanted to come in with my now small group of coworkers, but he refused yelling "thanks for nothing!" Into the phone and slamming the phone. I would never give these ignorant people my money! You have a 3 star restaurant and from what I can tell it's from your poor attitude. Criniti's up the street accommodated my party and we had a great lunch. read more

Great BYOB in South Philly. Informal casual atmosphere. Good menu selection: pasta, seafood and meat all have great choices. Seafood alla scannicchio is my personal favorite. Went there for my wife's birthday. The food was OK but they forgot to put in the main dish order for the person who was celebrating her birthday. She ate her meal after the entire family was finished. Also, the final bill was inaccurate. The waiter overcharged based on his own error and did not make it right. I am not the kind of person who makes big scenes in when things are not right but this guy missed the boat on customer service. He should have at least made an offer to remove something from the bill for the service related problems or offer a complimentary dessert (or some small jesture). He was not interested in doing the right and ethical thing. I still drive in to South Philly for food because I expect good service in a caring environment. This was very disappointing! I moved to South Philly in 2008 and love this restaurant. It's a place my husband took me to for romantic dinners before we tied the knot. It's a place where we've celebrated birthdays and had countless dinners with friends. The staff recognizes the phone number reservation because it is a Lancaster area code. I brought tons of family here after my college graduation and we've referred a countless number of people to our Scannichio's. All in all, we've spent thousands of dollars at this restaurant. Our most recent visit was this evening, May 7th, our second wedding anniversary. We are expecting a baby and wanted to make the night special, so we decided to use a restaurant.com gift card to get an appetizer and some dessert. Upon checkout, we were informed the restaurant is no longer accepting this gift card which clearly states "no expiration date." Not wanting to ruin the ambience and make a scene, I requested a senior discount or something of the nature to offset the declined use of the card. Nothing. The girl that broke the news was very sweet and you could tell she was humiliated for having to explain something so absurd asked of her by "the owners." Now, instead of enjoying the rest of my anniversary evening... I'm writing this letter, just blown away how one of our favorite restaurants so quickly brushed off our $25 giftcard. Looking back, I wish I had made a scene because their contract with restaurant.com is not my problem - Scanniccho's was already paid. Now, they've been paid twice. I've sent them a letter and asked them to set this right. I'm bummed and hope I can remove this posting once they've corrected their wrong doing. Update: They called me within 12 hours of firing the email to apologize stating they would have done something last night had I talked to someone else. The next time we go in, they'll do something special to make up for it. I was impressed. It was heartfelt and I almost felt bad for them for dealing with the whole restaurant.com mess. It turns out they do not get a profit from them whatsoever and are looking for a way to inform customers prior to their meal. We'll be back for sure... it's hard to stay away. read more

Good food. But the service was disappointing. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs. One of the meatballs was burned, and hard as a rock. I let the waiter know, and there was no apology, he just took the meatball away, and said sometimes they were fried on one side for too long. Worst experience in my dining history. I've been to Scanicchio's several times over the past 10 years or so and I could never complain until now. This Monday, my girlfriends birthday, I made a reservation for 8pm (closes at 9). I got calls from John and the restaurant from 1pm until 4 or 5pm but I was unable o be reached because of work. They wanted to see if I could come in earlier but we never made contact. When i finally called back, they made me feel like I did something wrong or like I was now unwanted. When I arrived I was more accommodating then ANY of the staff, I apologized that they had to stay open for us, but 8pm was when I made my reservation. It was such an awkward meal, all they did was talk about what they were going to do when they left, like go down the shore, and they were louder than me and my girlfriend. To make a long story short, my girls birthday was RUINED due to the lack of professionalism. They rushed us out of there and made us feel unwanted. I felt like a donkey leaving 20% tip... I should have walked out without paying the bill. I was never so embarrassed or felt so embarrassed for a business as I did tonight. There was no explanation or remorse wen I called back to explain my displeasure. WORST EVER. Never have been in a place that was not only not accommodating but rude. They talked louder than we did in the dining room, it was pitiful. The owners should find out about this because I'll never refer anyone else to this place. My husband and I went to Scannicchios for a romantic pre Valentines day dinner. We got there promptly at 7pm and was seated by the very friendly Hostess (linda) and quickly greeted at our table by our server(marc) who in turn told us the daily specials and introduced (lexa) his serving partner that evening. We were told to take our time and look over the menu and when were ready he will get our order. We were never rushed through this great dining experience. I need to say on a cold February Tuesday this small place was bustling busy, as a lot of couples were dining out. probably with the same idea we had go out a day earlier and beat the crowd. I ordered lobster raviolis, cooked perfect and not soggy in a Blush Sauce , my wife had a very tender pork chop on the servers recommendation. He was right on with his choice. We made him pick our desert and he didn't disappoint again he brought over a Pistachio Ricotta cheese cake slice, perfect portion. We just left Scannichhio's with a party of 7 for Thanksgiving Dinner. Unfortunately for me and my family we sold our house and I am moving tomorrow so I was unable to cook Thanksgiving dinner...We made our reservation for 3pm......we arrived and our table was sort of ready They had it set for 6 and we were a party of 7.....and it was too small of a table. So they quickly added another table so we would be more comfortable. Nice touch but that is where it ended.....It was a prix fix dinner for $30.00.......They started out the meal with Escarole Soup.....The soup was lukewarm NOT hot....only 2 out of 7 people had 1 meatball in their soup......Did not want to complain just poured another glass of wine and waited for the next course. which was Ravioli....Now there is not much you can do to mess up ravioli.....unless they are NOT hot which these were not.......I couldn't believe this is how Thanksgiving dinner was going... but was hopeful for the turkey course.......So out comes the turkey....and it look like it was being served in a hospital.....There was a teaspoon of stuffing with no gravy...there was a teaspoon of mashed sweet potato's There were 4 SMALL slices of turkey with minimal gravy on them.....and two thin slices of canned cranberry sauce. I could not believe how this meal was presented......My husband asked for more gravy and they brought him out about 2 teaspoons of it......My mother's turkey was two huge pieces of skin and fat.... I stood up at this point and officially apologized to my family for bringing us here and ruining Thanksgiving......At no time during our meal did one person come over and ask how everything was........The only saving grace to the dinner was that we brought our own pumpkin pie......At least there was one thing that was tasty $300.00 and it was AWFUL....... read more

extremely charming,intimate and plain old nice place to go and have an excellent traditional italian meal. i went the first time last year with mom,aunt cher,and cousin same age as myself 30. we all had a wonderful time and exceptional meal.we are all foodies and were extremely satisfied with both the quanity and quality of the food.in addition to an excellent meal served by a very friendly and polite staff,the owner was on location and truley made us all feel like family.he was a true gentleman and offered us each a drink,and suggested what meals may be best for each of us after a short discussion to enlighten himself with each of our individual tastes.i had the veal shank over risotto with some grilled italian vegs,which quite honestly was the most delectable shank i've ever had and def the lowest priced.im not one to concern myself with the price of a meal thats worth it,but a low price for a meal u'd gladly pay more for,is a definate perk.the eggplant and seafood is also very good and plentiful.the meal was finished with a complimentary shot of lemonchello which is a delight all its own homemade daily,and was paired with a very sincere thankyou from the owner personally.classy touch... 2 thumbs up for sure, the atmosphere is intimate,dim lights,quaint place maybe 7 tables,traditional white table cloths,very clean,simple bar fully stocked.great for a date, maybe better to be with someone special as there is not much distraction,its very quiet.great for family like granny or mom or husband especially such a nice place.. do try you wont regret it. read more

I'm writing this review for my son and my daughter in law. I recommend this place. Because of their good food. I haven't been in there in years. I asked him to call last minute since we were 10 minutes away. They took his name for two. He thought he had a reservation. They sat him next to a girl who was chatting on her cell phone. So Loud it was so rude. The tables where they sat were like a table with strangers.. there are too close. They couldn't even have their own conversation. The waiter knew her. They asked if they could be moved to another table but was told the empties were reserved. They shared their entree and charged 5$ extra . Meanwhile my son is big guy They sat there squished and uncomfortable while the the girl continue her loud conversation! . They asked if he could be moved to another table but told they were reserved. This place is not worth it! Absolutely awful customer service experience. Went for dinner to celebrate my birthday. Left my BlackBerry on the table in case the babysitter called. Waitress spilled water on my BlackBerry, which ruined the touch screen. I needed to purchase a new phone and called the restaurant to see what they will do for me because I was out $169. NOTHING but be RUDE!!!! The manager told me that I should have had insurance and he doesn't know what happened after I left the restaurant. Got blown off by the owner but finally got him on the phone. Yelled at me that my phone shouldn't have been on the table, and that he didn't spill water on it so he wasn't doing anything. Told me I was free to take it up with the waitress. As her employer, I stated that was his responsibility but he didn't seem to care. If they spilled food on my clothing, they would pay for dry cleaning, but a phone isn't the same to them. Good food, but there are plenty of other Italian BYOB with good food and better customer service. read more

By far the worst restaurant I have ever eaten in. The food, service and price were atrocious. We were a party of 13 and asked when we made the reservation if they had gluten free food and they said "sure we have lots of gf food." Well that was untrue. They had some pasta and would not let us order it as sides. We had to order 2 full orders and were charged $40 for pasta so hard it was barely edible. We attempted to order many things for entrees and none were gluten free so we were forced to order sausage in a fig reduction which was sausage sopping in a large bowl of gross vinegar. 2 of us ate it after draining the vinegar because they were hungry but I could not. When asked if I liked it and I said no I was told just wrap it up and give it to the others to take home. Who says that? I was never offered anything else. They would not put our appetizers in until we had our entrees decided. What?? The most disturbing part of our horrible experience is when my sister went to the dirty bathroom and the toilet was overflowing and the girl actually said " I will get my Mexican to clean it." We were appalled. The nicest employees were the Mexican employees. Everyone else was rude. No one liked their food and they knew it and never made any attempt to accommodate us. However, they did take the one sausage dish off the bill. Then we got the bill and couldn't believe our eyes. Because we ordered specials we didn't know how much they were and the bill was outrageously expensive. We left there literally feeling like we were robbed!!! We chose this restaurant to give my Italian mother a warm South Philly experience for her birthday who drove all the way from Ocean City. What a huge disappointment!
