Reading the positive reviews, I walked across town for this shop. I was greeted by an owner who barely acknowledged me, choosing to spend his time speaking to friends about living in Bushwick, getting weed, and the like. Whatever - his business, even if unprofessional. I went in for the merchandise and the vibrations but between the incessant chatter and loud music in a tiny crowded space, couldn't focus at all. Icing was when I gave up and walked out, and the same owner came running and yelling after me asking if I had taken one of his bracelets! It was from Astro Gems (a much better store, btw - look it up) but at that point, I wouldn't have taken this stuff for free. I originally came here at night and found out it was closed =( so my friend and I came back the next day and decided to give this place a try as I found it to be one of the only crystal shops near where we stayed. I would like to make it a point to collect crystals from every trip I go on =) Upon entering, we were both greeted by a lovely Latino gentleman who provided some aide to my friend who has probably never been in a spiritual shop before. He helped us locate some rare gems, gave a brief overview of how to cleanse the crystals they chose, and was so nice to even give us a free palo santo for free! My go-to spot for my stock pile of incense. You know you are in the right place halfway down the block because you can smell the aroma of incense. Just let your nose lead you there. It's a small space packed with spiritual goodness ad awesome world music tunes. They have more than just incense here, they also have a wide selection of quality oils, candles and soaps. There's also a small selection of meditation and yoga books, prayer beads and japa mala bracelets and little Buddhas for your home shrine. The main thing we come here for is to purchase Fred Soll's incense. It's all natural and burns for about two hours in the most AMAZING scent. I use this for my home shrine and let me tell you, you can smell this down the hall in my building. I have actually gotten compliments from my neighbors who pass by our apartment and have asked where I get it. Scent Elate actually sells these at market price. They do not mark it up. In fact, it comes out cheaper because I don't have to send out for them via Fred Soll's website and have to pay for shipping. You do get that special attention when you come here. Be prepared to have Mo pick a oil scent for you based on his reading of you. He still hasn't picked the right one for me yet hehe But, I did lead on to him that I am very drawn to cedar and sandlewood scents. He did say give it at least two hours, but so far, I am not into the body oils. He always gives us samples to try so we can come back and try something new. The store is friendly and welcoming and often times you can see Mo sitting on the patio having a glass of wine listening to Indian music. It's like it's his house you are going to. I don't mind going to the depths of hell (AKA Hell's Kitchen) to visit Scent Elate. It's kind of a little bit of peace in the middle of chaos. read more

Every good candle line is sold in this store, from Votivo to Ergo and Voluspa. There is incense of every kind, from your (better than average) Nag Champa to more exotic resinous fare. The selection of oil-burning lamps by Lampe Berger may be the store's hallmark: these lamps were used at the turn of the century in morgues as apparently they help kill airborne bacteria. After a quick online search, I found Scent Elate. It's a little jewel box of a boutique. The large selection of international products is amazing, but above all - Juan Carlos, the gentleman who assisted me with my purchase, was absolutely wonderful. He made recommendations and actually told me how to properly use the sage and Palo Santo. After thirty-minutes I almost didn't want to leave! Mere hours ago i was searching for places to shop at near my hotel in Times Square, and among the list was Scent Elate. Seeing that my sensitive sniffer directs me around my home town, I had to see what it was all about... And I couldn't be more glad that I did. Before even walking in the door of the quaint and charming shop, I already had two items in my hands. Outside, they have these gorgeous Nepalese scarves and I picked up two because of the lovely color combinations and beautiful prints and extremely soft feel. I was so pleased and I hadn't even smelled anything yet! So, I walk in and was warmly greeted by a guy, who later came to be known as Moez (sp?). I told him that one scent was jumping out above the hundreds (no joke, there had to be hundreds) and I had to have it but I couldn't put my finger on it. After giving him two adjectives, he knew exactly what I was talking about. Pretty impressive. About ten minutes later, I had quite a few things waiting for me at the counter to come home with me, and that's when I met Mo. By far the most laid back, peaceful New Yorker I have ever met in my five or so visits. He had such a good energy and it was so refreshing to be around, that I didn't mind allowing other customers with one or two items go ahead of me while he explained the uses of certain products, and he really does know his stuff. Most phenomenal incense and essential oil store in all of NYC. Possibly North America. Mo, the owner, is a "smell virtuoso", botanist, anthropologist, historian and mystic. I am NOT EXAGGERATING! The first time I went there was a Friday night. I had returned home after a rather tough week at work, and my 17 y/o son said, "I've been researching and I think I've found the ultimate incense store! Let's go!" I was exhausted, and just wanted to crash at my apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Alex was so amp'd up, I couldn't say "no". Reluctantly, I agreed and we trucked out to midtown west. When we got there, I looked around. "Sorry, buddy. Looks like any other new age shop." BUT THEN!!! __Mo__ emerged from the back room... and proceeded to totally blow our minds for over an hour! Again and again, he would say, "I'm not saying buy this, but you have to smell it!" He meant it. He would see our reactions and then two or three other packages would materialize in front of us. It was supernatural! All the while, Mo would be describing the ingredients, manufacturing process, cultural and ritualistic context, how this incense or oil was similar, or different, to others we liked. I would have paid just for that lecture and demonstration! Mo never pressured us to buy anything. My son and I left with only a couple of items, but shortly regretted passing on a number of scents we got to check out. We were soon back. Now, most of my family and I are regular customers.
