Only go here for beer and a festive atmosphere. If you're looking for good German food this is not the place. I lived in Bavaria for 3 three years while in the Army, worked part time in a restaurant in Bad Windsheim and married a German woman. The food at Schnitzel Platz is disgusting. Not just bad, but actually disgusting. The schnitzel is processed at a factory somewhere. It wasn't even fried to crispy. Definitely not hausgemacht. The texture was horrible. The spaetzle was also factory made and was disgusting. My mother-in-law sends us care packages a couple times a year and it always contains spaetzle. When we're feeling lazy we boil the premade stuff like you would macaroni noodles, but stuff they served me last night was horrible by even premade standards. The rotkohl (red cabbage) was also from a jar or can and is much worse than the red cabbage you can buy in a jar at Jewel. The jaeger sauce was not only barely present on my schnitzel, it also was disgusting. For this place to advertise having a chef, is insane. Anyone can take stuff out of a frozen box, bag, jar or can, heat it up, throw it on a plate, and serve it lukewarm. As far as the sausages, well, that's hard to mess up. Granted they are premade so all they have to do it heat them up. Additionally, the service was horrible. Granted they were busy for Oktoberfest, but our waitress was flustered, slow, disorganized and took forever to even get a beer to the table. Then, a person in some sort of management position came out to complain when our party of 10 collectively agreed to only leave a 15% tip. To be completely honest, 15% was way too much. If you are looking for a festive atmosphere during Oktoberfest, this is the place and I do give them credit for that. I did feel like I was back in Deutschland listening to typical subpar Oktoberfest music but as far as the food, I need to go teach these people how to cook. To advertise that you have a chef on your website is disgraceful. We went here to pick up our food and this place was completely packed inside which against the law in Illinois as we have an indoor dining ban in effect due to COVID-19. We were pleasantly surprised to find good food at Schnitzel Platz. It's not that the suburbs can't have good restaurants but you're not always going to find authentic stuff. I had originally wanted to go into the city, but then it started snowing...and snowing... so we changed our plans and came here. Glad we did. Enjoyed their beer selection and the inside actually took me back to Germany. This food is not indicative of Bavarian/Southern Germany but its still good German food. I had their Jaeger Schnitzel and hubby had their schweinshaxe (pork shank). It's not crispy on the outside but it was really tender and delicious. My brother and his wife ordered weinerschnitzel and an assorted sausage plate. To start of course, we had their large pretzels. While I enjoyed it, they were substantially lighter than the pretzels we consumed in Germany or at Oktoberfest. In a nutshell its close enough to the real thing and we enjoyed it all. Schnitzel Platz is an interesting restaurant. Located just a little ways West of I-355 it's unique decor makes it immediately noticeable from North avenue. This distinctly German aesthetic is apparent in both inside and outside of the building. Upon walking in you immediately notice old Cuckoo Clocks, German Signage and creepy looking dolls on the Walls and shelves. An Oom-pah band strangely plays a lot of American folk music (in German) and Rogers and Hammerstein covers. Once seated you're given both a regular menu along with a wine menu. As a German restaurant they not surprisingly have a large selection of beer, sometimes in comically sized and shaped glass containers such as a Paul Bunyon sized mug or a glass boot. Their menu features a variety of German dishes and they also have a separate dessert cart. Schnitzel Platz also has a gift store where beer mugs and other items found around the restaurant can be purchased. I sampled a fair number of appetizers and had a bratwurst entree, most of the food I was was very good, even if it wasn't exactly up my alley. If I based my review only on the quality of the food and not the price or service this would have been a four or five star review. However, where Schnitzel Platz really falls flat is the service, it appears on a weekend evening they only had two waiters, refills on drinks were slow and nearly 45 minutes passed repeatedly between visits from the waiter. While the food was available quickly they seemed dreadfully understaffed. What should have been a 90 minute at most visit to order, eat and pay took nearly double that. As always, I rolled up late but we didn't even need a reservation, there was PLENTY of seating. We got a cozy booth and got down to business. We all got some delicious German beer. For appetizers we ordered the Heisse Wurstplatte (Chef's assorted sausages) and the potato pancakes. That my friends, would have been enough to feed the four of us. Schnitzel Platz deserves to go out of business. I am a Brit who lives in Kentucky, but I lived in Munich for a year, so I know what German food done right tastes like. So when I say that the food was not very good, I have a proper frame of reference. Schnitzel is difficult to get right, and they didn't; it was greasy and not properly cooked. Low prices would forgive a multitude of evils, but the prices they charged were on a par with far better establishments, such as Gasthaus in Louisville. A lack of Air conditioning (what is it with German restaurants and no aircon?) didn't help either. Wow. That's just my reaction to the music. I can't really get past the music to get to anything else in the restaurant. But I'l certainly try. It was a quiet (business-wise) night at Schnitzel Platz on a Friday night when we showed up for our reservation. Our server was mostly attentive and answered our questions (when we could hear her). Between the three of us we had very different choices. All were good. Only problem (food-wise) was that our entrees took 30 minutes. That's not 30 minutes of catching up and chatting, that's 30 minutes of brain-scrambling accordion music and the chicken dance. When the food did arrive, mine was good, but so hot I couldn't eat it. Although I didn't try anything else I believe they enjoyed it. Honestly, had I not been there with my brother and sis in law who kinda made a big deal about going there I'm really not sure how I would've handled the noise. I took my parents here during octoberfest and they loved it. We went on a sunday night since that's the only weekend dinner reservation we could get. It was crowded but we were quite happy to see we got a booth instead of sitting at one of the long galley tables. There was a band there that night and they did plenty of silly songs to get people to sing along. My dad had two giant liters of german beer and was very happy. My parents had spent a few years living in germany while my dad was in the army so they really enjoyed the food and atmnosphere. The plates weren't as large as we'd anticipated but they were more than enough for me. I got pulled into a drinking contest where they had 12 people up front drinking HB beer out of baby bottles. We finally had the pleasure of trying this place on Saturday night after a friend of ours had mentioned drinking das boot there! He had be at boot...we were SO there the next night with two friends of ours to check out the supposedly great German food and of course the beer. We had a 7:45 reservation and were running a little late...thanks Osi V, but we were still seated immediately. We ended up ordering the hot sausages and the potato pancakes or "crack cakes" to start and Fred and I each got a boot of beer and our friends had a couple of the smaller beers, Kev went with the one liter and O had the half. FYI...das boot is 2 liters and they also offer a 3 liter glass! Amazing! The appetizers were ON POINT...the potato pancakes were some of the best I've ever had and HUGE! Yum! And the sausages came with horseradish and hot mustard...yum and yum! We then ordered two meals to share between the four of us. We had the wiener (veal) schnitzel with liver dumpling soup, sauerkraut and spaetzle and the schweine (pork) schnitzel with barley soup, red cabbage and boiled potato. Everything was seriously amazing! I preferred the veal to the pork just because it was more tender, but both were fantastic! And the sweet and sour cabbage...omg...AMAZE! Okay, if you have eaten schnitzel IN GERMANY(as I have), you will be disappointed. If you've never eaten in a German restaurant in Chicago, the first time you do, you will be astonished by the size of your bill. It's just not inexpensive cuisine (and never was). However, if you've not had German food in Germany, you will be very impressed. I enjoyed my meal. This was the better of my German-American dining experiences in Chicago. I had the broiled trout and it was done just right. (I'm allergic to pork, and what with the veal boycott in the area, that's pretty much all you'll get these days in the Chicago Metro area.) The spetzele was good as well. I thought the liver-dumpling soup was extremely good. No complaints on the red cabbage, either. The beer is always good. The waiter was very cordial and (for a German place) very good at taking care of the table. I totally recommend the pistachio cheesecake too! As to the decor....well, since my family is from Bohemia going back few generations , it feels like home to me. However, it is NOT stylish. If you've got family from that part of the world, you know how it is....TONS of knick-knacks over every square surface, a beer stein collection, several cukoo clocks, a few outrageously Rococo wooden grandfather clocks and of course, stuffed fish or animal heads hanging on the wall. This place is hard to review, because I love it and hate it. I love the food, the place is fun and I look forward to rocking out Octoberfest every year. That being said the service is a bit lacking. Every year they get the orders wrong. We order stuff that never comes and they still put it on the bill. This year was the tipping point. We order one thing, and get another. I have celebrated my birthday here for the last 13 years -- maybe more. Love the food and the vibe. Unfortunately, my visit today was so bad, I won't go back. I'm sad about this. We Went for Oktoberfest and they were not prepared for the crowd, which is perplexing since they do this every year. After our first waiter made a face at my wife for asking if he would come take our order, he then made another face when the hostess told him we had been waiting a while -- more than 30 minutes without a visit to our table. He never brought our water. We at least had drinks, but he never came back. Two members of our party showed up a few minutes late and didn't have anything. After he finally showed up and rudely told us he was going to finish another order before getting to us, I demanded a new waiter. Finally we were on track. We had drinks/refills and the new guy took a food order. Then it went to scheiss again. Our entrees showed up more than an hour after we ordered. We only got our food when we did because my wife went to the bathroom and saw the plates sitting on the counter. When she asked, they were delivered. The Main dishes were good, but the sides were old, cold and stale. They clearly had been sitting under a heat lamp. The German home fries, which are usually excellent, tasted like styrofoam. Brought this all to a managers attention and was literally told that because it was Oktoberfest and sometimes they get busy, the manager wasn't willing to do anything about it. When I protested, and said I would write this review, I was given a number of excuses, some to make me feel bad about complaining (telling me a staff member was in the hospital). It hurts to write this review, but Wolfgang needs to know. We were completely cast aside and then punished for speaking up. The hostess said she needed permission to call the owner at home to tel him I wasn't happy. She evidently got permission and Wolfgang allegedly offered 10 percent off. I appreciate that, but the damage was done. I brought my entire family in -- 10 people -- many for their first visit. It was terrible and embarrassing. If you're looking for watered down Americanized German food than you might enjoy what they offer at Hofbrauhaus or (although good) Bavarian Lodge. Schnitzel Platz is by far the best, most authentic German restaurant I have ever been to. I love German food and every other restaurant that I go to is disappointing compared to this place. I take everyone that I know there (when I'm in town), I highly recommend ordering the 'Prince Leopold for Two', as long as there are ywo of you and you both have large appetites and do not mind taking home leftovers. If not, try ordering the 'Deutsche Haus Platte', both entrees come with everything that you would want to try or sample. We love Schnitzel Platz! We make a night out of it when we need to drop off both cars for oil changes as everything is in close proximity. This time we tried the appetizer sampler and each got a bowl of soup. The sampler was so good and had a nice variety (potato pancakes, mini burgers with sautéed onions, sauerkraut balls and stuffed mushrooms). My husband is a fan of liver dumping soup so he ordered that and I got the goulash which had a nice spice to it. We ordered their apple strudel to go for dessert. Delish! It seems they have raised their prices somewhat which I understand but I think they need to rethink their pricing structure (ie $5.99 for a cup of soup is a little too high in my opinion). For a German who came to this restaurant with high hopes unfortunately it ended in utter disappointment. The food is not very authentic, biggest let down are --- the Schnitzels! Usually a Schnitzel (e.g. Vienna Style) is veal, fried in butter in 2 pans with different temps . Takes time & skill but oh so worth it. At the "Schnitzel" Platz they use pork and deep fry them ... like a cheap hole-in-wall '"Pommesbude" (google it). When it comes to German food, only the Bavarian Lodge is worse. Beer is nice, especially the Franziskaner, a Bavarian favorite. All the worse because we actually got to meet the owner, who turned out to be a very nice guy. There is no political correctness between Germans, so we mentioned our disappointment in the food. He shrugged his shoulders and something like 'It's what the people expect of German food'. It is a little crazy and very packed around September/ October time frame so make sure you get a reservation!! It is an Illinois thing to charge extra when you share your food with someone. It is absolutely silly and dumb. I had the Hofbräu Oktoberfest & Weihenstefaner Hefeweisse beers. Absolutely fresh and great! The Apple Strudel was B-grade, and they did not have the vanilla sauce, but the vanilla ice cream was a decent replacement. The atmosphere is very German and appropriate; the dudes wear Lederhosen and the chicks Dirndl-esque dresses. I waited 10 minutes after being seated before anyone approached to take my order. The establishment was nowhere near even 20% full. It is a big place. The waiter brought a bread basket without asking; it was delicious, and I believe the pretzel buns are made in-house; they were warm and spongy soft and the Glendale Farms butter was great on the pretzel buns. I ordered the German Spätzle (egg noodles, German style, with bits of some garnish), and the German Pretzel (a little crunchy, but tasted good) to eat. Do not charge extra for sharing. I've been twice, both in December near Christmas in the evening on the weekend. The band plays the 12 Days of Christmas and each table has a part. It's fun, loud and totally different than any other restaurant I've been to. The first time I came here, I had already eaten (we had late reservations) so I ordered the Gebackener Camenbert. I had never heard of it, but saw "breaded" and "raspberry" and thought, "that's gotta be good!" It was. It was also HUGE. If ordering as an appetizer, easily for 4-6 people. For me as something to munch on? Too much cheese! It was delicious though - gooey, creamy, crunchy and sweet. The second time I visited, I KNEW to eat beforehand and was completely full. I ordered a coffee, and had planned to order a drink, however our server was less than present. They offer beer in boots, which is AWESOME (for those that drink it!). Every person that I go with is always more than pleased with their plates of sausage so I'm sure it's great! All being said: it's a neat place. Fun and energetic with the band. H E A V Y food -- but really, that is German food in general, right? We went there per the bday boy's request. We had a party of five total and were seated under the Oktoberfest-inspired tent. Seated at a long table, we only occupied about a quarter of the seating and for the duration of our visit, no other guests came within 4-5 chairs. I'd be curious to come back when they reorganize the seating to their traditional year-round seating. The food, as mentioned, is heavy. For a girl like me, it was a bit too heavy and I had a hard time getting through much of my meal. Although, I will make clear that my Jager Schnitzel was tasty -- served in a delicious mushroom wine sauce. I recommend it -- and the leftover box to go with it! They had an interesting beer tasting setup. My only suggestion to them would be to have a little guide to the beers to go along with it because about 1 minute after the waiter has walked away, you will forget what is what. And I would think that knowledge of the beers beyond first sip would certainly encourage further ordering of ones favorite. There was a setup for live entertainment. Unfortunately, nobody was playing during our visit. I do not know if this is because it was a Thursday or if they just start later in the evening. If it was the latter, I would like to see them start the entertainment a little earlier so that they can hit the normal dinner rush. I feel that I almost missed out on the full experience. read more

I'm not sure what to write about this place. On one hand I thought it was fantastic and on the other hand I thought it was so-so. And that's why I went with a three. A higher rating might have been attributed to the amount of alcohol consumed in one Boot. Which is actually one of the reasons I decided to come here. Even though I'm not a big fan a German food, especially the cabbage, I thought the food was decent. There selection of German beer was above average, the Dunkel and the HofBrau were probably the best on the list. Plenty of schnitzel to go around as well. The cake topper was the fun environment, great service. The live band didn't hurt either. This place is pretty far from where I live so I'll be searching for another place to get Das Boot. read more

We celebrated my father in-law's birthday this past weekend at Schnitzel Platz. I love the environment. The music. The very authentic German decorations and the service on a very busy Saturday night was just right. Not feeling up for fried meat (no thanks!) I kept the schnitzal at bay. Instead, I opted for the potato pancakes (making sure to ask for both sour cream and apple sauce) and realized that the serving was enough for 2 people. They were not extremely greasy, but instead, had a tart and delicious flavor. I had one and a half plus a plate of German salad. Be aware: The German salad is a tasting portion of beets, cabbage, tart yellow haricots and celery salad. It was tangy and tasty, but not your standard salad plate. Vegetarians will be safe with the potato pancakes with apple sauce. Worth checking out if you're up for a large helping of craft beer and fried meats. read more

This is in my mind a traditional German restaurant- casual, simple, plastic checkered tablecloths, etc. The night we went to dinner they had live music which was very fun. We arrived early on a Saturday with no reservations, and the hostess was very nervous and said she might not be able to seat us despite the restaurant being empty. Instead she chose to seat us and just said we would need to be done by 6 pm because of reservations. I thought this was strange, but it worked for us- so we did it and made sure we were gone. The food was decent, nothing really to write home about, but good. I loved the salad plate, and then had a schnitzel platter. The Bavarian Lodge near here is definitely the higher end version of a German restaurant, but this is a nice substitution for a more casual and less crowded atmosphere. read more

Every weekend, I see this placed packed from North Ave. Why is this place packed? Well, this place is fairly small to begin with, but on the other hand, people also seem to love it. I went on a Saturday night with my husband and to our surprise it was jammin.' Live Polka really gets a place hoppin' lol. Schnitzel Platz is a very family-oriented establishment and keeps adults and kids entertained. There were several times the Polka Band did children's songs and even had crowd participation. Anyway, we decided to eat at the bar since the dining area was occupied. The barkeep gave us an assortment of complimentary breads, butter and mustard. What can I say, they went well with the German beer! For my entree, I had a beef and gravy dish with potatoes. It was fine but I should have tried their schnitzel! Overall, 3 stars because their food was okay and our wait time for our food was a bit long. I might come back to try more authentic German beers but I think I'm good for awhile in regards to German cuisine. read more

One of my favorite places. I try to eat at The Platz at least twice a year. Their schnitzel is very tasty, they have a great beer menu, and Bob & Hank are entertaining with their music performances. Eating here during Oktoberfest is really fun, very festive, with the long tables you share with others. During the regular season, they have normal table seating. Make a reservation, you will need it! They will seat you over the non-reservations, but you still may have to wait. It can tend to get noisy when they are crowded, and during Oktoberfest. read more

All in all this place is pretty good! I've only been a few times and the food has always been great! I get the schnitzel with spatzele and my husband got a sampler with schnitzel, red cabbage, some assorted sausages, sauerkraut and some other goodies. If you get the schnitzel definitely get the brown gravy, it's yummy! Unfortunately I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband and brother love the beer here! Our food has always been delicious and I've experienced pretty decent service when I've visited. The decor is a little outdated and I was embarrassed walking through the restaurant to my table while wearing heels because of their very loud wood floor. Maybe some rugs to drown out the clicking of ladies heels? Go here for the good food, it's pretty authentic! read more
