Growing up in Jasper, the 'Schnitz' just kind exists. Sometimes, there's almost a resentment because the local place is kind of a tourist destination. Having not lived in the area for a number of years, my relationship with this place has evolved. I feel like I have separated the wheat from the chaff and found what works for me. Kraut Balls and that Giant Pretzel are shareable wins. Chicken livers and beer are a combination that cannot be beat. Get the Liver Dinner and add the salad bar because it's worth it. Don't sleep on the chicken tenders. Like, honestly, it's their delicious fried chicken in convenient finger food form. After all, Chicken Livers aren't for everyone. German fries. Tasty side dish. Boom. I always want to love the Apple Strudel more than I do. If you have room for dessert, maybe get something else, like another beer. I've now visited twice for work dinners and it's always a unique experience. I'm not a huge fan of costumes on wait staff, but the food is really good. The sampler with sausage, kraut balls, Reuben rolls, is a must. I had my doubts about kraut balls- but I was wrong. Yum! I had the tenderloin sandwich which I wouldn't recommend- very dry and tough. What a pleasant suprise this place was!!! A friend and I were traveling to holiday world and totally spaced the 1 hour difference from Indy to it and were looking for a place to burn some time and grab a bite to eat and happened to drive past this place and wanted to give it a try.. And oh boy were we impressed! To start we got their pretzel with the cheese and mustard. Its no exaggeration to say this was the BEST pretzel ive ever had. And the cheese was AMAZING. Be light on the mustard.. It lit us up. (The waitress did warn us on this but it still suprised us, lol) Next i ordered the pork shank and my friend ordered the Ruben. My shank literally fell off the bone and was so tastey. The mashpotatoes it comes with were perfect as well. Would highly recommend this dish. My friend ordered the ruben and when i asked her what she rated it she said 6/5. The bread was perfect, meat was very good, cheese tasted great as well. To top off the amazing food our waitress Tara was phenomenal. Was so friendly, prompt and professional. Made good recommendations and was on top of it!! Okay. So it's been a couple weeks since I've been here, but I think I remember enough to leave this review, and yes it is five star, from me! To start off, I was already discouraged of the town of Jasper because of the accommodations that I had arranged for the weekend, paid for, and didn't even use because it was so bad. I won't mention any businesses like Days inn, which you can see the review I left for that place. Slightly raining, and hungry for local fare, and a very heavily German influenced town in Indiana, this place was in walking distance and from the reviews I read, I believed it had fit my preferences. The inside is German themed decorum. Even the employees are dressed in traditional German garb which was awesome! And to cut to the chase, you can see the stop sign in my photo, indicative of a stop sign in Germany, along with the rest of the building. The menu is pretty big, and I ordered escargot as an appetizer. I've had escargot probably half a dozen times at different restaurants, even high-end restaurants, but this place has had the best I've ever had. Came out piping hot, good flavor profiles, great texture! It was the day of the Kentucky Derby, and Wolford reserve had a special for race day. So I went ahead and ordered a mint julep. My bartender was extraordinary! My mint julep was fantastic, and because of the promo from Wolford reserve, I got to keep the copper cup. And it's the real copper cup, not the fake ones that have the stainless steel lining inside. Pretty expensive gift if you ask me. As my main course, I got a REAL wiener schnitzel, with Grüne Spinat Casserole and Spätzle as my sides... I'm not much of a carb eater, but those noodles were so worth it! Completely the opposite of what one would think if they've never had traditional German food. But I tell you, it was a great portion and it was outstanding! There's so much food on that menu, I wish I could have ordered and eaten more, because I absolutely would have. As far as German restaurants go, this is hands down the best I've been in, and I really hope one day that I'll be back in that area to eat there again. Upon arrival you are greeted by a cute little gift shop with an assortment of many different items. They have take n bake pretzels (which were delicious), little wooden toys, chocolates, mustards etc. These are just a few of the items available for purchase. Moving along to the star of the show. Let's talk about the salad bar. This salad bar is amazing. The plates are kept COLD ready for you to pile high a fresh bed of crisp lettuce and an abundance of toppings. They also have pasta salad, broccoli salad, slaw, and fresh breads to choose from. I have never experienced a salad bar with so many options. They have different soups that they rotate to choose from as well. We chose the Cheeseburger Soup during our visit and it was wonderful. Don't skip over the pickled herring, my husband raved about it the entire meal. I could have easily filled up on the salad bar and been so happy with our visit but my eyes were bigger than my tummy and I also ordered an entree. I ordered the chicken livers and the potato glaze. The chicken livers were delicious and battered just right. The potato glaze was unique. I love potatoes in every form but I didn't really care for the gravy it's covered in. There was no room for dessert but our server talked us into taking home a couple mini pies. We chose the coconut cream and German chocolate. It made for a nice treat later that evening. If we didn't live 2 hours away I would be a regular at that salad bar. It's worth the trip and I plan on returning in the near future just for the salad bar! This is a truly authentic German restaurant. From the exterior through the interior it does not disappoint. The menu is full of authentic German food but also has your normal pub options as well. We were referred here by a nice man volunteering his time at the historic mill. Supposedly the best restaurant in Jasper, I couldn't imagine a better place. Classified as an American restaurant, they certainly have a German flair to the decor as well as menu offerings. The service was outstanding and the attention to detail was evident in every item that was placed on our table. My wife had the fried chicken and although it took a little bit to fry it up, it came out hot and fresh! It was so juicy and tender - perfect! I had the beef Manhattan with German potatoes. The gravy was very flavorful and complimented the tender beef morsels perfectly. We opted for a piece of apple strudel with cinnamon ice cream for desert and the ice cream was proportional to the cake. Way too much, but it was all eaten anyway. I have been told about Schnitzelbank for several years. I have been wanting to try it, but as with most things in the last few years, Covid has hindered my trying new restaurants. My chance came when my church's men group sponsored a men's retreat at Saint Meinrad Archabbey. Visting Schnitzelbank is a well-attended tradition/break from the excellent food at the Archabbey. We had reservations at 7, for 44 men... When we arrived a few minutes before 7, the table was set up and we were seated immediately... I cannot list what everyone had, but I selected the German Sampler Platter that allows you to choose 3 Different types of meat: I selected Wiener Schnitzel, Schweine Schnitzel and Bockwurst. It came with German fries and as my side, I selected red cabbage... It was wunderbar (wonderfull) . All three meats were most excellent... The german fries and red cabbage were spot on... My taste buds were demanding more, but my stomach was full... Enjoying a couple of German beers to wash it all down made it a perfect evening... And from the empty plates, smiles and conversation, everyone else had the same experience I did.... And the service... Best I have had in a long time... we were all served quickly, accurately and the orders came out as close together as possible.. which meant no one was waiting on their food as the others were finishing... I was truly impressed with how they handled such a large group... It is an hour plus drive from my house... That will not deter me in any way from going back.... There's a lot of beer to choose from and they are more than happy to help you taste your way to your favorite. The food is exceptional, but don't get there too late cause when the mashed taters are gone then they're gone for he day. Absolutely perfect! Right when you walk in, the atmosphere hits you. There's a nice Willkommen sign (welcome in German) They have a cute little gift shop with locally made items, and other German themed items. The servers wore the traditional dirndl. The salad bar isn't very big, but it's delicious. Great coleslaw, pasta salad, etc, with lots of dressing options. The minestrone was fantastic, melt in your mouth. Make sure to check out their beer, wine and spirits. Lots of local and imported. My girlfriend received a $10 off coupon for her birthday so we headed to Jasper on Friday evening. I had never been before so I was looking forward to the Seafood and Salad Buffet as well as the pound of Crab legs. We arrived at 5:25p thinking it wouldn't be crazy busy yet but we were so wrong. It was standing room only inside and out but they were calling names almost constantly. The nice thing was we could wait in the gift shop area or outdoors where the weather was tolerable. I stayed indoors and had a chance to check-out the gift shop. Cinnamon rolls, Christmas oraments, wine, children t-shirts and Beer Steins are a few of the items in the gift shop. The hostesses were so efficient, friendly, calm and working very hard to get folks seated as quickly as possible. Great job! We were seated, as noted, 45 minutes later. We sat at a large round table next to the Salad Bar. The table and chairs were spaced appropriately for Covid and the servers all wore masks. It was tight finding a spot to store my friend's walker next to the wall but we managed. You can also wait in the bar area plus dine there as well. Our server was prompt, friendly, smiled often and removed dirty plates often. All 3 of us ordered the Salad Bar, Seafood Buffet, added Crab Legs (all 3 for $24.95) and a Noodle Appetizer. For dessert, we shared the amazing apple streusel with cinnamon ice cream. The streusel was piled high with thinly sliced apples mixed with cinnamon and nutmeg topped with a flaky, thin crust. I highly recommend you order even if to take home. The salad bar begins with sanitizing your hands plus gloves are offered. Plates are chilled in the cooler at the start of the buffet line. The Salad Bar could be a meal in itself. The salad was crisp and fresh, an abundance of toppings and dressings were offered as well as cold meat salads, fruit salad and soups. Everything remained full due to two girls working constantly on refills. Nothing ran out on their watch. Check it out before you order in case you just want the Salad Bar. The Seafood Bar was like Thanksgiving with fried apples and apple butter, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, linguine with alfredo sauce and fried shrimp to name a few of the dishes. When you place your order let the server know if you want to add the 1 pound of crab legs. If so, she will give you a ticket to hand to the gentleman at the end of the seafood buffet line. The restaurant was packed all evening but nothing ran out on either buffet. The food was hot, fresh and sauces were provided for the seafood. The lines moved quickly and dirty plates were removed quickly. I was disappointed with the amount of meat I pulled from the crab legs. I want be ordering those again if we return. The salad bar and seafood buffet was a little overpriced but for a special occasion I'll gladly pay a little extra. The dessert was the highlight of my meal. Before we get to the food... If you are bringing kids, handicapped people, anyone who is prone to bumping into anytjing in small spaces - have them wait in the car. The gift shop is also a waiting area and several parties broke things hanging on unstable nails or resting on glass shelves...us included. After my daughter knocked an item from one of the nails, a cashier immediately came over to collect for it. Same with another party. Then they have the nerve to ask you if you want to keep it. For 10 bucks, we will just glue it and hang it in the garage as a reminder of our visit. Granted, we could have just left - and not spent $160 ...but we were hungry. They should feel fortunate. Seems like 10 bucks is an unfair swap, right? The food was pretty good - but not as good as the hype. The wiener schnitzel tasted good. But the breading concealed a tiny piece of veal. The goulash was good, but lukewarm. The schweine schnitzel was the highlight. Very tasty and a good cut of pork. The beer was cold and tasty. I had the darker house selection. The spinach casserole was good, but again...lukewarm. Still good. Potato pancakes were above expectations. The salad bar was stocked - but the flies were a distraction. Our server was Jill. She was WONDERFUL. I felt bad for her because I could tell they were understaffed and out of some of the more popular items according to our hostess. Dubois County Indiana has too many great eateries to deal with the horrible food here. It is German, which is actually the same as Cajun, meaning it is "hot" but not "spicy". It burns your throat and eventually gives you lung Cancer, yet it has absolutely no flavor on the tongue. For those of us who actually were forced to grow up on German food as kids, we deal with the totally destroyed esophagus that makes for the most painful of acid reflux. The salad bar is the only option here, but there isn't much to choose from. I can say there are worse German restaurants, like the one in French Lick, but there is no such thing as a good authentic German restaurant. You'll note that throughout History, no one wanted to conquer Germany to have Germans cook for them. read more

I'd never been to Jasper but if I ever find myself back there, I'd stop in at the Schnitzelbank for a giant Pilsner, some of their fried sauerkraut balls with the (melt your face off) horseradish mustard and something random off the menu for an entre. I've read ravings about the salad bar but I opted against it as it looked like the Tasmanian Devil had been through there. I like the little shop they have and I regretted not getting any of that mustard to take home. Always a great spot to stop in while in the area. Although the food is on the pricey end, it's quality above all else. They also have an incredible salad bar loaded with everything from pea salad, German potato salad, and well... regular salad... to pickled herring, homemade soups, and pie slices! Seriously.
