Place is a hit or miss. I wish I could do a 2&1/2 star. First and foremost I want to explain that the food hasn't always been poor quality. It seems as though since the pandemic has hit, corners have been cut but prices have raised. Today my family and I went for a meal. My boyfriend ordered the goulash and there was a hair in his food, and the gravy was still rather chunky from being poured out of the can, it tasted as though it had sat for hours and the beef tips were dry. He ordered the red wine that was suggested with the meal. He didn't receive his wine until almost the end of our stay. After several times of trying to call out to our waitress he had finally gotten his wine minutes before receiving the bill. I had a salmon dinner with the spinach casserole. The salmon looked as though it was bought with the premad grill marks, and it was rather dry and tasteless. The spinach casserole was absolutely disgusting and I'm trying to be polite. I absolutely love spinach and mushrooms but you could taste the flavorless canned/preserved mushrooms throughout the entire dish. My daughter had the grilled cheese which looked to be microwaved with stiff cheese, the fries weren't so bad. Lastly my brother had the schnitzel burger and said it had no taste, there were plenty of onion rings to go around however. This is the first time I've went in almost a year and was truly disappointed. The service was slow, it was 1:00 on a Saturday afternoon and could see the place was short staffed. Being a server myself I understand but we were at the table for 15+ minutes before any interaction. We waited over an hour for our food. Over all, the kraut balls and the salads were the highlights of our visit. Sad to see such a good restaurant go downhill so quick. Not sure I will be rushing to return anytime soon. read more

I attended Schnitzelbank for lunch. It was a really fun experience. The decor is fun (waitresses in German attire and all). We tried the sausage sampler appetizer with 3 different mini-wursts. It was good, and the mustard was really hot. I had the German version of a tenderloin sandwich. It was not as big as the IN variety, but it did include cheese and bacon. The sandwich was good, but it needed something to cut through the richness, like a mustard or pickle. I also had the hot German potato salad, which I really did not like. Salad bar is worth the extra money! Two hot soups are a nice touch. My husband said it was the best tuna salad he's ever had. Besides the salad with a wide array of toppings there were also cheese cubes, jello with fruit, several pasta salads, cottage cheese and fresh baked bread! The portions for our meals were huge. We had two non-adventurous eaters with us and they had cheeseburger and chicken tenders. Both said they enjoyed them very much. There's a nice variety of options for those who may not want traditional German cuisine. The fried chicken looked delicious! My husband got the pork tenderloin (Schweine Schnitzel) instead of the veal Wiener schnitzel. It was a huge piece and picked mashed potatoes and gravy along with the Spätzle. (Carb overload but it was a night to splurge) He wasn't able to finish everything. I had the trio wurst platter. I loved the knock wurst and the bratwurst! They were cooked perfectly, I like mine with a little color on them. The German fries were delicious and I don't eat sauerkraut often, but enjoyed my serving. My portions were also plentiful! I would have been set with just two wursts! Whenever we are in the area again, I'd stop again! It is a little pricey but it just depends on what you order! This place is awesome! Love the old world German decor and dark woods. The servers dress in old German dress and are very attentive. The salad bar is really good with lots of selections. You've also got two hot soups to choose from. Ours was cheesy chicken taco soup and bean soup with bacon. Think great northern beans with bacon. There are also several breads to choose from as well. Well worth it! We ordered the German Sampler appetizer. Keep in mind that they call it an appetizer, but it's HUGE. Well worth the $20. It comes on three plates and has a ton of food PLUS two potato and two sides!! More than enough food to feed 4 people. Was absolutely delicious. Finding German food around the Louisville, KY area is nearly impossible; finding quality German food is a miracle. That's why we drive 2 hours to Jasper, IN to this restaurant. It's also a special treat for Hubby's aunt whom we usually take with us. This evening, Hubby ordered his favorite, the beef sauerbraten with red cabbage, & auntie chose the salmon patties. Auntie almost groaned with delight at the first bite of her mashed potatoes & brown gravy. Both of them were more than satisfied with delicious meals. Hubby pronounced the salad bar so good that it could have ruined his appetite, but it seems to have failed. My Wiener schnitzel was huge & hot, but was surrounded by air between it & the batter. The actual size of the meat was considerably smaller than it appeared on the plate, though there was still a sufficient amount to satisfy me. The potato pancakes were huge, thick, & delightful. They are served with a small side of apple butter, which thrills Hubby; the server quickly brought me sour cream when asked. In fact, service was outstanding, even though the crowd was becoming very heavy by the time we finished. The most delightful experience for me was the incredibly delicious coconut cream meringue pie; it alone was worth the trip! I would welcome an upgrade in the seating, as the 70's style wooden chairs are narrowly curved & only the svelte among us can sit in them comfortably. However, they do have some padded, open chairs, which they will bring to the table when asked. If you have anyone in your group who is a little wide in the hips, has back problems, or finds sitting on bare wooden seats painful, ASK for a regular chair. While we can't go as often as we'd like, we will return as soon as we can. read more

This is a very well known German style restaurant that has become a major tourist stop. Although it's is a somewhat large and sprawling building, there is not as much seating as I expected. The German-theme is quite pronounced through wall decorations and gift shop items for sale. The staff are mostly dressed in Alpine inspired outfits. We were seated in a small room (part of a larger banquet room) in the back near the kitchen. Very awkward to access. The same we encountered were all very friendly. As for the food itself, we started with a nice salad bar. It was clean and we'll stocked, but with only the basics. They offer Quite a few proper German dishes, in addition to three different wursts (sausages). They have a sampler with all 8 of the German meats and two sides for 2 people (4 total sides), for $46.95. Most entrees are $20 or $25+. We were there on the Saturday night of the nearby Ferdinand Christkindlmarkt, so it was packed. We waited over an hour for a seat Overall, the food was just ok. I'm sure it's hard to do great food for so many people in such short time. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but if we were ever in Jasper again I might try it on a less busy night. read more

The food was great! I got the Mini Bretzel, and as a person who had never had saurcraut, it was amazing! What I'd like to point out even more is our waitress Lacy Y. We are on vacation and the person bringing us around arrived super late, and the waitress was super nice about it. This place closes at 10est, and we arrived at ~9:40. We unfortunately had to stay until 10:45, and she was still super nice about it. We all loved our food, the service was great, especially being how late it was, and the prices were reasonable. We drove about an hour after skiing at Paoli Peaks one Saturday to go give this a try. We got there about 5pm and got right in, but when left a little after 6 the place was getting packed and lines of people were waiting. Which is a good sign. Bottom line. We loved it! Everything was very authentic. There were a few side items that we wanted to try because we haven't had them before, and they didn't appeal to my taste, but I'm ok with that to try something new! Great experience! I wish I could say we would be back, but being from Louisville, it is just a little too far away to be a dinner option if you're not in the area. Too bad as we'd love to go again. The other day when I went back to my hometown, I was coming through with my mother and she was like where should we go to eat in Jasper. Then we said, "HEY LET'S GO TO THE SCHNITZELBANK!" First of all, to get a negative aspect out of the way, the parking lot is horrendous. It's just difficult to park in, because there is no real organization. When you first show up to the Schnitzelbank, you will see how festive they are with the blue string lights all around the building, glowing and really just shining light on the place. You can walk in and they have a super cute little gift shop filled with a lot of German items and fun candy and desserts you can buy to take home with you. In fact next time I go back toward my hometown, I'm going to stop in and get one of those alpine hats. Now the thing about Schnitzelbank is that you need to prepare yourself for some of the prices and really prepare yourself for the time it takes for your food to get to you, especially when it's on a weekend evening. I got a beer and it didn't come out until the salad for my side dish came out and I was expecting them to bring that out when we got the rest of our drinks, but I thought that was a little odd. However, I got it in the end. We ended up getting the Kassler Rippchen with the sweet and sour sauerkraut and German potatoes. The meat was actually really delicious. It was juicy, it was plentiful and it was cooked well. The German potatoes were actually really good too. They're sort of like hash browns, but I think they could have been seasoned a little better. The issue though was the plating. The sweet and sour sauerkraut was placed under the meat, which I think gave two issues here. I think it was problematic when you're trying to separate your flavors, because the sweet and sour is already potent enough (I should have gotten the regular sauerkraut). Also, the meat beinng slapped on top of it made the sauerkraut's texture become mushy and almost hard to eat. To be fair the sauerkraut was still tasty, but it could have been placed differently to make it more enjoyable to eat in my opinion. Overall though, the place is a lot of fun. The decoration and the set up inside is super neat and I love their little bar area. The servers are dressed in German themed outfits to add some extra theatrics to the place and the servers are generally super friendly. I think this place is worth going to and you get to experience a different culture that we have in Southern Indiana. Also, for fun, I suggest that you should learn the Schnitzelbank song. They have the lyrics posted up on the wall by the entrance! read more

Our entrees were great, and fairly German. It's hard to get German pretzels spot on, but these weren't too bad. The bratwurst was very flavorful, and I can see how it's won so many awards. The salad bar was nothing special and it was a little overpriced for the selection, or lack thereof. Our server wasn't very considerate of food requests or allergies. We asked for no sauerkraut with our brat and no butter on our vegetables. She wasn't very willing to make these accommodations, so we had to find something else on the menu. I felt this was a little ridiculous. The ambiance of the place is absolutely great! We loved the gift shop in the front while we were waiting for seating. With limited restaurants in the area, this one was pretty pack. Though, parking was do-able. I'd recommend the potato pancakes and a slice of the german chocolate pie following your meal. It is a common and wonderful happenstance when good reviews on Yelp lead to a truly remarkable dining experience. Sadly, this is *not* one of those times. We were planning a trip to Jasper, and, after looking at the reviews, decided to give this place a try. Our server was ok. Not great, but ok. We're not big eaters, so we ordered two dishes - a beef Roulade and the old standard, wienerschnitzel. Service was kinda slow, but given that slow service is a German tradition, I'm not going to ding them for that. Finally the food arrived. The first thing that I noticed was that the plates were stone-cold.I don't know whether this was a ploy to get us to eat up quickly and leave, or whether they just weren't thinking, but at $20+ per entree I expected better; for Heaven's sake, even Red Lobster™ and The Olive Garden™ get this right! The Roulade seemed pretty good; I don't remember, as I only had one small bite. The schnitzel, however, was a different matter entirely: The veal cut was thick and not adequately flattened, but the batter - which was actually tough instead of light and crispy - made it look larger than it actually was, by virtue of being half full of air. It was a huge disappointment. The dessert selection was similarly disappointing. The stars of the show included Apple Strudel and Cheesecake, neither of which were enough to tempt us. Our preferred dish - Schwarzwälder Kirsch Torte (Black Forest Cake) was missing for the excellent reason that the cook was moody (so it says on the menu), and only made such things when mood or demand required it. By way of comparison, our go-to German restaurant (Gasthaus in Louisville) features better decor, warm plates, better food (both quality and quantity), prettier waitresses (hey... it is what it is), and a mouthwatering selection of European cakes and sweets, with the aforementioned Schwarzwälder Kirsch Torte topping the bill, and a supporting cast that included Strawberry Napoleon and Fallen Chocolate Soufflé. We paid our bill plus a modest (20%) tip, and left. We will not be returning. Epilogue: Our next stop was French Lick, where we discovered German Cafe. We stopped in for dessert. The Schnitzelbank has been reported as the best restaurant in Jasper to my by many of the locals. While its obvious to see the deep rooted history that the restaurant carries, the food is someone lacking in the same traditional favors that one would expect. With the addition of catering to their facility, it seems that well crafted German food has taken a back seat to mass produced German food. I'd compared much of what our group ate to inexpensive wedding food...you'll eat it because you're hungry, it's not awful, but the flavors and textures give off the sense that it's made in huge batches. The salad bar was very disappointed, nothing special by any means as it's advertised on the menu. The giant pretzels were dry and over-done and the brats weren't much large than a small breakfast sausage. Overall, everything was just kind of blah. The saving grace here is the atmosphere and the people who work there, they do a great job of making you feel welcome and like family. read more
