Turkey pot pie is like a hug from grandma - soooooo good!! Friendly service and fun German vibe.

This place needs a deep clean, which is not immediately evident due to the dark ("cozy") atmosphere. Could be cute, but feels crowded with an abundance of decorations. The tables are cramped and too small for the plates and other dishes they use to serve. If you get the emaciated pretzel as an appetizer, the serving dish will take up a third of the table. This would not be a problem except that they refuse to give you a bigger table when you request it. The food is acceptable if you can get beyond the thought of the cleanliness, but far from the best German food in the state--pretty pedestrian. The German fries could have been so much more flavorful! Most of the waitresses prefer to cluster together and gossip or fight with their boyfriends using profane language. But the bar maid is the pinnacle of unprofessional. She is judgmental and makes comments to the "regulars" about other customers--she was overheard saying "what the f### is that?" when customers walked in. This does not does not make them feel welcome. When confronted about that behavior she became loud and belligerent. She has zero tolerance for diversity of any sort -- color, level and of masculinity/femininity, clothing. However, if you are an older, ultra masculine white man, you are acceptable. She seems to prefer those customers. Schnitzelbank may have been a jewel in years past and has potential to be better. The owner must first realize the importance of customer service and choosing quality wait staff. We've spent a lot of money here in the past (average bill for two was about $75), but we won't be returning due to the bar maid's behavior. There are so many other options that we will choose to spend our money in places that are respectful to their customers, especially the marginalized customers. read more

Definitely felt like you walked into an authentic German pub (except for the gift shop they make you pass through). The staff was very friendly and we felt welcomed as soon as we walked in. We both started with the bourbon aged porter that was very tasty. They had an impressive drink list that combined their own brews as well as popular beers and wines. I ordered the Wurst Platter that included 3 types of sausage, German fries, and kraut. The side salad that came first was as expected and pretty large. I loved the sausage and trying different flavors. Luckily the waitress warned us that the mustard they give you has a very strong kick. It definitely does but it tied the dish together. Maybe my expectations were too high, but for a place that bills itself as authentically German, the food was off the mark. The first clue was that they misspelled rouladen on the menu. They offer rolladen, which are rolling shutters. I ordered rolladen hoping I would not get a box of shutters. The meat was very dry and tough, but the sauce was delicious. I ordered spaetzle to go with it, for which I paid an upcharge. It wasn't spaetzle, but thick egg noodles - Reames frozen? - instead. For the price, this was very disappointing. From the moment you enter, you are surrounded by all things German. At least the stereotypical German. Regardless the decor is very unique and we were to seat ourselves. There is a salad bar that you can choose to add to your meal which offers fresh salads, kraut and types of bread which are very delicious with the apple butter that is provided next to them. I ordered a pork schnitzel which had a breading that tasted similar to funnel cake. It also came with a very fresh side salad and two sides. I opted for steamed veggies and German fries. They were good choices but as a whole, it was too heavy for me. The server suggested an apple strudel (which was very good) for dessert and was kind & attentive. The meal itself only had one issue and that was the price. I cannot imagine battered pork with two sides amounting over $20 a plate. The bill for two was near $50-$60 and that was not including tip. In town for business, and my hotel was next door to the Schnitzelbank. My Rep told me that the SB was the place to go, when in town. He wasn't wrong. After a training I had a few hours to kill before a group dinner, so I decided to head next door for a happy hour beverage beforehand. They had several beers on tap, mostly German beers but a few from 3 Floyd's. They had 2 sizes, and the BIG one was only a few bucks more than a normal size.... so I ordered the large marge size from 3 Floyd's. It was as big as my head, but delicious. Definitely the best beer I had on my Indiana trip. (I went to a local brewery and their beer was terrible!) For dinner I had a brat and a baked potato. Food was delicious. Service was great. After dinner I went and explored the attached gift shop. A lot of fun things- but way over priced. I almost bought a t-shirt - until I saw the $40 price tag. Way too much to spend on a t shirt if you ask me! Aside from the gift shop, the food and service was great! And I was happy to see the 3 Floyd's on tap, as it was a recommendation from a friend that lives in Louisville - and by far better than anything I had tried in Jasper! read more

I so wanted to like this place. I drove 2 1/2 hours each way to come here for some decent German food... and it was a complete fail. I see other reviewers calling this authentic German food... uhm... I am German, born and raised, and while there are a lot of traditional German dishes on the menu, their taste is anything but authentic. The only somewhat good dishes were the German fries (if you don't harp too much on the many burnt spots) and the Wiener Schnitzel. No wonder Americans don't care much for German food if this is what they are served. We ordered the platter for 2, with all the meats, German fries, kraut, spinach, the potato glaze/dumpling, and potato cakes just so we could try all of it. The sausages were ok, nothing to write home about though. As mention the Schnitzel was the best of all the meats. The sourbraten did have a hint of the sweet and sour brown gravy that is usually served with this, but the meat itself was so dry you really needed a beer or two to wash it down. Same goes for the unidentified piece of meat with a bone in it. I believe that was supposed to be a Kassler, smelled like it but tasted like nothing. The gulasch, omg, the worst thing on this platter. It came on a bed of overdone Spaetzle and had zero taste. Unbelievable. The sides weren't much better. We started with the potato cakes, which were some sort of cake like batter, thick and dry and tasteless. German potato cakes are supposed to be thin , crispy edges, soft center with a distinct potato taste since potatoes should make up about 90% of the batter. The kraut... don't even get me started... yet another tasteless affair. Even American kraut is better than this. The creamed spinach has pieces of scrambled egg in it and barely any spinach. Also it is topped with a huge gobb of cheese. The potato glaze described as a dumpling is pretty much mashed potatoes with I think flour in it and served like a ball with the bland brown gravy. Redeeming qualities are the decor, which is done nicely and the beer is good. Service is attentive and friendly. And as we observed other guests, the pretzel, salad bar and daily Amerian specials seem to do good. Other than pretzels we didn't see anything German ordered... I wonder why? read more

Dinner here with a colleague Tuesday night. Most of the locals raved about this place so I had to give it a try. Very German feel. The salad bar was very impressive therefore I had to get that with my meal. I ordered whitefish with steamed vegetables. My colleague ordered the pork shank he really enjoyed. The salad bar was really good. Great selections and everything was fresh and clean. I like the metal chilled bowls to put the salad in. Soup was also available as they had chicken noodle and loaded baked potato soup. Did not have dessert as we were full from dinner. Also no appetizers since we had salads. My colleague ordered a side salad. He ordered the root beer which he mentioned over and over how good it was. I stayed simple with a club soda and lime. The Schnitz is the primary reason why we travel to Jasper -- we basically build weekend road trips around it! We love the German cuisine & atmosphere and really appreciate the friendly service. They offer a quaint gift shop, too. On our most recent visit, we enjoyed cold craft beers and a bountiful dinner at the bar which included: tossed salads, fried chicken livers, potato pancakes with apple butter, Schweine Schnitzel, Gruner Spinat Casserole and baked potato with fixins. My mouth is watering just recalling the meal -- it goes without saying that everything was absolutely delicious! And, our bar service by Lacey and Jenna was great. We returned the next morning for what they call "late breakfast"; they only serve from 8am - 11am and offer one item, Spates Fruhstuck, but boy is it plentiful and yummy! (We dug in before I could take pics.) I highly recommend this establishment. We've only ever dined at the bar, but I would imagine it's also nice to sit in the main dining area. Just don't try going on a Sunday because they are closed. Enjoy! read more

Excellent experience. Food was good. Functioning salad bar. German influenced . It was busy but the staff were all wearing masks properly. There was a wedding rehearsal dinner in the front room. We took our 15-year-old German Exchange student to get a "taste of home". She laughed when she read that Weiner Schnitzel said "You can't get any more German than that". Germany stole them from Austria she explained. The other 3 of us thought the food was pretty good. Our student was not so impressed. I found the salad bar to be above great. It was outstanding. The sausages we ordered were great and my granddaughter's spinach casserole (she is vegetarian) was quite good. The waitress, Breann, was wonderful. She was pleasant, polite, and prompt. read more

My family had dinner here after visiting Holiday World. We didn't arrive until after 7 PM but they were still quite busy. We had the potato pancakes as an appetizer and they were delicious. (We liked the apple butter they served with the potato pancakes so much that we bought a jar of it before we left.) My wife enjoyed her prime rib sandwich. My daughter and I thought the pork tenderloin sandwiches were good (very tender) but not great (could have been more flavorful). Our biggest disappointment was the wait time for our food (1 hour). This could be due to the fact that the restaurant was at much more than 75% capacity. Regardless, we still recommend you stop here if you're in the mood for good German food. read more

Talk about being jealous of Jasper folks for having this gem pf a destination in their town!!! From the second we walked in for a business lunch, we were treated like regulars! These people could give a college course on restaurant management. I plan on returning here many tines. We had the Pork Chop special, & I substituted the mashed potatoes & gravy for the to die for German potato salad. Salad bar best ever!!! A must do every visit. My family lives in Kentucky, but we have a lake house in Winslow. Every time we come to the lake, we come to the Schnitzelbank. The service is always friendly, and everything is so fresh! The salad bar, pretzels, kraut balls. and potato pancakes are an absolute must. I love the smoked pork chop, wiener schnitzel, and saurbaten. The sides are phenomenal as well especially the mashed potatoes, saurkraut, German potatoes, and the potato salad. Plus, the beer is authentic and delicious! read more

I really just wanted to drink a boot of beer! As far as super kitschy German themed restaurants in middle of nowhere Indiana go... this place is great! Upon entering you are thrust in a gift shop with every stereotypical German item to an imagine. The waitresses wear themed Bavarian dresses to complete the look. Make no mistake they are going full blown, over the top theme here. The bar has a great glass ceiling and overall nice atmosphere, throwback to 1970's. Nice selection of German beers and you can get Das Boot! Of course i did and it was cold and fantastic. For the food, it is average but given the over the top theme, much better than I expected. Start with the pretzel. Watch out the horseradish mustard is not to be taken lightly. It will clear your sinuses in a heartbeat. For entrees hit the chicken pot pie or the wurst plate. I have had a number of things (all decent) but these ride to the top. Pot pie is huge (hotter than Hades) and done well. Soft flaky crust with thick and rich fillling. The wurst plate is exactly the opposite, it's the best plate of sausages i have had! If you love the midwestern iceberg lettuce salad bar theirs is pretty good. Nice selection of veggies and the blue cheese is a very nice homemade option. We have had a lot of fun here. Understand where you are and embrace it and you will too read more

It was fine, but nothing special. We were on a road trip, so we didn't get the schnitzel, thinking it would be nap inducing, but we had the salad bar and the sausage 'sandwich.' The brat and the knack wurst were good, but the fried potatoes were super greasy. And a sausage served with two half slices of pretty stale supermarket rye is not a sandwich. Most people seemed to be having fried chicken, the special of the day. The salad bar was fun. Lots of choices, replenished constantly. The wheel of blue cheese was a delight, but the pickled herring needed to be on the cold part of the salad bar, not sitting on the side, at room temperature. Like everywhere, they were pretty understaffed, and the servers were super busy, but also very friendly. Drinks were refilled promptly, without having to ask. If you're there anyway, stop, but it definitely wasn't worth the side trip. read more

Go here. Just do it.....it's worth the little drive from the interstate. We went for lunch and the portions were so big that we had our leftovers for dinner. The food is authentic, filling, and delicious. They also have a brewing company so you have to do a tasting. We sampled six and liked them all. Atmosphere was relaxing and full of history for diners to read. This place was perfect for me and my buddy but it looked like it would also be great for a large group. Service was good and waitress was friendly and helpful with menu suggestions. We would eat here again. Unfortunately it's about eight hours from our home. read more

We had waited a few years to go to this restaurant. Alas, it was NOT GOOD. The goulash was just oily and did not look or taste like goulash. The weiner schnitzel was so tough that the steak knife that that gave to me would not even cut the veal. It was over a quarter of an inch thick and should have been pounded thin and was not done correctly. The green beans came out of a can with NO seasoning of any sort. All in all, we wasted a LOT of money on a terrible meal. We ended up taking our wine with us. The server brought a brown paper bag and did not staple a receipt to the bag. She said that if we got stopped by the police, not to worry, that they would recognize the brown paper bag as coming from this restaurant. WOW I do not know who raves about this food, but they must not enjoy good food. read more
