I was in Germany last summer and man do I miss having a proper German beer on tap. Now that the holidays are behind us, I met my wife at Schnitzels after work on Friday. We walked in and I see a long bar with some crazy German beers on tap. This space used to be a deli?? Now its a small German pub serving beer and pub food. We give our cell number to the hostess stand and wait on a table to be free. I ordered a Hofbräu on tap while reading the menu. The menu is substantial with lots of German delicacies. Did I say lots of German beers on tap? This is a huge selling point. The menu says potato pancakes but I know this dish as Kartoffelpuffer. It is small fried pancake made from potatoes, egg, and flour. The chef used the food processor on the potatoes and made them very creamy. The potato pancakes were served with apple butter. Crispy breaded pork cutlets served with rich mushroom gravy - that's Jägerschnitzel. And it's one of Germany's most popular and delicious foods. Jägerschnitzel is on the menu with Pork or Chicken. I ordered a Pork Jägerschnitzel and my wife ordered a chicken Jägerschnitzel. The trick is, order the gravy on the side! The mushroom gravy will make the cutlet soggy, that's a Bill S Pro tip for ya! The Jägerschnitzel was cooked perfectly and I loved the root vegetables on the side. This dish also came with Red Cabbage, truly a great meal in my little village of Stony Brook. A few months ago, I went to Zum Stammitsch in Queens with my in laws. Do you know what a pain in the ass it is to go to Queens from Stony Brook? Trust me, Schnitzels is a very good spot for German food and a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. read more

I though our first visit to Schnitzel's was fantastic. We so needed a place like this around here! When we arrived we had to wait a little for a table as it is first come first serve, but it was well worth the wait! Our young lively server was very friendly and suggestive of dishes to try. They had a small selection of German beer on tap and most importantly they had Hofbrau original. We waited quite a bit for our beer but it was really busy. I thought the food here was really good and had a homecooked taste to it but all dishes tasted like low-sodium - which isn't a bad thing. We definitely had to add additional salt to our meals. Sauerbraten was delicious. The atmosphere was real cozy and was reminiscent of a German pub you might find in Bavaria. Our only real disappointment about Schnitzel's is that they only serve wine and beer - which is great, but we were really looking forward to having Jägermeisters to start our party! We went to Schnitzels when the first opened. They didn't have their liquor license yet and they were out of Sauerbraten at 6PM on a Saturday. So it wasn't a good experience. Lately, several of my friends went and said things have improved a lot so maybe I'll give them a second chance but only because there aren't many German restaurants left on Long Island. read more

3 stars and I'm being generous. My 1st question, do long islanders ever leave Long Island? I mean queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan are not in another country. It's anywhere from 15-50 miles for most people. I'll get back to that in a second. This place was jam packed on a Saturday at 4pm. Wow. That is extremely rare for most restaurants. It's too early for such big crowds. I'm thinking this place is gonna be awesome. And for long islanders who never travel more than 10 miles, it is awesome. The wait at this place was 30-40 minutes. Could have been almost at Zum Stammitsch My point is I've been to German restaurants in queens. The one that stands out is Zum Stammitsch. 50+ years in business. And I wish I can can say differently but the comparison isn't even close. Not even in same galaxy. And I know most people reading this review is saying "I live on Long Island I'm not driving into queens to eat". For those people I say, ok. Your missing out , big time. But now I am really understanding , these places are packed only because people won't travel , they want a 5-10 minute drive. What are you people rushing back home for? Feed the cat, watch Netflix, do a load of laundry ? I wanted this place to be great , I would love a 10 minute drive too. Not happening. Time to fuel up the car and head West. Took our college kids for dinner- my son got the salad with chix schnitzel- the chix was a little too salty- that one fell flat. We had the wurst platter!! Knockout app! Overall a solid place! I really like getting a liter of quality German Lager and sitting down for some food that isn't served anywhere else nearby. That is how you do the mid range sit down restaurant! The food is good, although I don't have a nearby benchmark to compare any of their dishes. I have spent some time in Germany but I couldn't tell you how their food compares head to head. But generally German food is pretty hard to mess up! And they deliver here. The trademark Schnitzels are good and very large portions. It was hard to finish. I enjoy going there and getting things like their cheese spread and appetizers. The service here was perfect- lovely servers and quick- the place was adorable with a nice temp and open door vibe. That being said, this was the worst sandwich i have eaten in years. (Many, many years) The pretzel bun was hard, dry flavorless and pretty much inedible- had to peel off most of it to even eat the sandwich. Unfortunately losing the bad bread did not improve the sandwich- schnitzel was dry, stringy and hard. The cheese seemed like a plastic tasteless film. I could see that there was a tiny bit of gravy- but if I hadn't seen it, would never have known it was there. Absolute disgustingness. I tried to make it palatable by using my companions' garlic aioli- but the sauce was too sweet and had a chemical aftertaste. I really wanted to like this place but the food is embarrassing. I was trying to be diplomatic with my review but since the owner responded to me very harshly with personal insults- I will add that the reason I did not tell the server that my sandwich was awful is that my 2 lunch mates' meals were as bad or worse than mine- and I did not think complaining to the very pleasant server would turn garbage into sunshine. There was no part of the sandwich that could be remedied. It was garbage. We enjoyed the staff and the place- The schnitzel was rubbery noodles splashed with a tasteless brown sauce looked as if it were thrown across the noodles from the other side of the room- the best thing on 3 plates was a passable potato salad. Fresh back from Germany, humble brag, I was curious on the American take on German dishes. Lo and behold there's a German restaurant near my location! I had curryworst, a popular street dish and my date had the sauerbraten, she liked it and gave me a taste, definitely more flavorful than you'd expect. The curryworst was a huge portion. Really good solid flavor. The Staff were very attentive and friendly. Our waitress was definitely timing the appetizer to entree to dessert. I could see how an impatient person could mark off for that. Ambiance was definitely loud and a bit raucous, I don't think a this is a spot for an intimate conversation. I half expected live music in a venue like this. Layout is a bit cramped and with the size of the plates the table quickly became a challenge. The meal came out to $45 per person with tip. The redcabbage was good the spätzle okra not sure why there was another vegetable under The schnitzel. I ordered the traditional Wiener Schnitzel and it came with a sauce on top..... not sure why this isn't traditional... My wife had the Rahm Schnitzel and the meat was over fried too the sauce was great. The kids had spätzle mac&cheese and they liked it. The appetizer wheel was cool too. To my surprise that this new German place is quite GOOD from food to service and atmosphere! I was so worried that I could not find any dish I would enjoy as I always have a bias on German food that just heavy meats and sausages etc. Mistake and inaccurate! My salmon salad was so clean, neat and so perfectly seasoned! I REALLY appreciated that the kitchen did NOT use oil to make my grilled salmon per my request! I love their purple cabbage slaw! So delightful! My family enjoyed their chicken, veal schnitzels, pork chops, sausages, German cheese board etc. all thumbs up. Wow! It has been a long time everyone voted JA! I was really excited to see this place open. I've been to a small handful of German restaurants and have always liked the food. Unfortunately this place really fell short in quite a few areas and I don't see it lasting here. -Giant Bavarian Pretzel: 3/5, figured you have to order one of these bad boys at German restaurant right? It was mediocre at best. It was fresh and hot out of the oven but still managed to taste stale. The beer cheese and mustard were good but the pretzel itself was eh. -Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich: 3.5/5, as my S.O put it, "this looks like a Wendy's 4 for 4 sandwich". The bun was 3 times the size of the actual sandwich contents. The chicken was super thin, and it really lacked flavor. Thankfully I had beer cheese leftover from the pretzel so that saved it somewhat. Rating it at a 3.5 and this was the best item ordered of the day. -Schmandschnitzel Chicken: 2.5/5, again chicken was super thin, dry, and lacked flavor. The green beans it was served with were very bland and basically tasteless Not impressed at all with this one. Overall I have to say we all left pretty disappointed. The price you pay is FAR overpriced for the food you're getting. Our server was very nice and helpful, the ambiance really didn't feel "right" for what it should've been. Classic rock music playing the whole time and a few paintings on the wall. For me there's really no redeeming qualities here that would entice any of us to come back. It's October. Y'all need to GET IN HERE QUICK because there is SCHWEIN'SHAXE on the menu and IT IS EXCELLENT! ! For those of you who aren't familiar with it: This is a pork shank. It is prepared various ways, but the superior method is roasting, preferably followed by a deep-fry to crisp the skin. If you know the delicacy, I have had them in Munich, at the Hax'nbauer, which set my standard. The best I've had stateside was at Schmankerlstube in Hagerstown, MD, and the worst I've had was a local place that shall remain un-named, because they committed the abomination of boiling their schweinhaxn. If your kitchen boils meat, you just gave up on caring about joy, and life, and decency, haven't you? Yes. Yes you have. I am excited to say that Schnitzel's took their own tack and delivered a juicy pork shank that must have been marinated in order to give it its depth of flavor, then roasted it so that it wound up being fairly lean, and developed a crispy skin seasoned well with spices. This was a nice compromise on the "tough" fried skin (imagine a shank covered with fried pork rind. It can be a challenge to saw through with a table knife) and provided complementary texture. Also appreciated was the size; these are smaller haxn, about softball size, and you'll get a generous portion of lean meat but not leave the table feeling sluggish. This dish was accompanied by mashed potato, a small side of red cabbage, gravy and sauteed asparagus. The asparagus was perfectly done, tender but not mushy. The cabbage was apple-sweet and not too sour. Nothing was overly seasoned, and even with soup to start, I ate everything on the plate and was able to take a three-mile walk shortly afterwards. The first time I went here I had French onion soup which was surprisingly bland. On one hand, I applaud the chef(s) for not over-salting food, but on the other, it tasted like the butter and sherry and Worcestershire sauce were absent. This time I tried the Loaded Baked Potato Soup and WOW. What a perfect infusion of smoky flavor from the sausage. Creamy texture, perfectly seasoned. Accompanied by a perfectly soft, salted pretzel stick. This one is a winner! The ambiance is casual and hasn't been "Schwartzwald"ed to death. There are some decorative cuckoo clocks and pictures of Bavarian scenes, but no one traipsing around in dirndls or lederhosen. And no polka music. You're not being whisked off to Germany; you're at a well-thought out and cozy restaurant and bar in Stony Brook paying homage to German food but combining it with contemporary items favored by locals. Service is perfect; the waitstaff have been cheerful and able to explain what the menu items are like, can make informed suggestions about beer and wine, and they strike a good balance between hard-to-flag-down and hovering. The Specials menu for Octoberfest is definitely worth a look and will provide some difficult but satisfying choices. I hope you'll try the haxn and love it as much as I did, AND.. I hope Schnitzel's will keep it on the menu year-round! read more
