Is this a bad restaurant? Absolutely not. But there are some important areas that need some serious tweaking, based on my visit there this week. If you're a local, you probably aren't even reading this review because this place is definitely a local hangout. For the rest of you, Schobel's sits within eyeshot of I-10. From the outside it looks like a barn. And the parking can get tight. When my party of three walked through the doors, I experienced a flashback to the days of eating at Sambo's or Howard Johnson's -- vinyl booths and chairs, kitschy family photos on the wall and the smell of grease (from the kitchen) and coffee. For some odd reason, I felt like I should've been smelling cigarette smoke but, alas, it was smoke free. I also noticed that about 90 percent of the patrons looked up at us as we were escorted to our table. None of this is bad. In fact, it was pretty cool in a retro sort of way. SERVICE -- Our server was good. He was a 20-something year old who checked on us regularly and made sure our food was delivered in a timely manner. FOOD - One person in my party had the Reuben sandwich and said it was one of the best she'd had in a while. It looked good. The other person ordered the salad bar and came back with a pinch of lettuce and a few other things. She said they were almost out of lettuce and that most of the stuff there was brown (this was during the lunch hour). Not good. I ordered the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and fried okra. The potatoes truly tasted homemade. Delicious. The okra was run-of-the-mill (frozen) fried okra, which is fine. The chicken fried steak was breaded properly and fries to a nice golden brown, but I needed much more than a butter knife to cut into it. Some advice to the line cooks here: pound that meat a little. It was about a half-inch thick and tough as nails. It tasted OK, but c'mon guys! Chicken fried steak is the national dish of Texas. Do better! Finally, I went to the restroom to wash my hands before we left and was flabbergasted. If you have teenagers and you've ever been brave enough to step into their bathroom... Well, let's just say that the staff at Schobel's didn't bother with regular bathroom checks on the day of our visit. I've been to truck stops in West Virginia that were cleaner. What bothers me most about this is that employees here use these same restrooms. Thank goodness I came in with clean hands. Would I eat here again? Sure. But I truly think that the locals here need to insist that Schobel's step up its game in a couple of areas. read more

Coming back home to San Antonio from Houston, we always love to stop at Schobel's in Columbus TX. They have everything you could ever want on their buffet, from several kinds of meats to sides to desserts. But this time we were not that hungry and wanted to save room for their famous pie. I ordered a BLT from the menu and it was a beautiful big sandwich with perfectly toasted thick bread. My husband enjoyed an equally beautiful chicken salad sandwich. My side of fries were hot, crunchy and delicious- and I'm pretty picky about good fries. The service was wonderful. Then came the crowning glory: a slice of Cherry Meringue pie. It had perfectly golden brown fluffy meringue, cherry pie filling, vanilla custard and melt-in-your mouth crust. Makes me want to drive all the way out to Columbus for more! It was fantastic, and they have several other pies to choose from as well. The pies at Schobel's are even better than those at the Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls - although the meringue wasn't piled quite as ridiculously high on top. Schobel's pies are my favorite of anywhere I've ever been. At checkout, they sell a variety of jellies and other goodies. I can never resist a big Rice Krispies treat to take home. read more

I was browsing through Yelp on a trip to San Antonio from Houston and discovered this restaurant. I was excited to get German food for lunch as was my wife. While the German food entree selection was limited to a sausage plate and a few schnitzels, we nevertheless enjoyed our meals. First off, they had a buffet for lunch ($11.95) with a few entrees (fried chicken, meatloaf and bbq - no German food) and a variety of veggies and sides. However, I found the salad bar was amazing. It had a blend of lettuces as well as fresh spinach plus very fresh veggies. I enjoyed the cole slaw and German potato salad. I elected to just do a large salad bar ($7.95) and elected to forgo the hot foods since I inherited my wife's Jaegerschitzel. The Jaegerschnitzel ($12.95) was not what she expected in the traditional sense. We have had it where the pork is pounded thin, covered in bread crumbs and pan-fried and covered in a gravy with lemon to give it the tartness. In this case, she received a good size pork chop deep-fried like a chicken fried steak. The pork was about a half-inch thick and was extremely tender and tasty. As a fried pork chop, it was awesome. My other experiences with fried pork chops was a deep fried dry and tough piece of pork. Not here! I would easily order this again. My wife also felt that the red cabbage was bit too vinegary for her taste, overcooked, and lacked clove. She did say that the salad bar made up for it though. Just goes to show that you can't please everyone. Finally, I had to try their made fresh everyday apple pie ($3.95). It did not disappoint! As far as service, our server Gloria was delightful! I look forward to having this place on my list for frequent stops. I also will seek out their New Braunfels' location while I am in the San Antonio area. read more

When it comes to this area, there is not a whole lot of competition as far as diner-style restaurants. Schobel's has been an institution for so many years that the nostalgia itself makes this a destination place for travelers. Not being a local, I am not rating this based on the other options in the area. The last visit my family and I had here a few years back, we had a great experience both with service, food and pricing. This is a place for Texas country staples like Chicken Fried Steak, Schnitzel with the traditional Braised Cabbage, Sauerkraut and German Potatoes, and of course they've always been famous for their buffet and salad bar and their homemade pies and display case of fudges and desserts. Our first visit back this week since the pandemic did not live up to our experiences of the past. The service was still very sweet and hospitable; we really liked our waitress as we have liked our waiters in the past. But the food was seriously lacking and poorly made and the prices have gone up exponentially, making it really not a good buy compared to other similar dishes we get elsewhere. It's a shame, but again - not much else in the area for this type of cooking so it'll most likely still be a "rest stop" destination for us in the future unless it gets to be absolutely horrible. Our food: - Chicken Fried Steak with a side of Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans: For $18 I've had WAY better. The best part was the CFS itself, which I was grateful for. But the mashed potatoes were so extremely salty I could not even eat them. I couldn't even taste potato, only salt. The green beans seamed canned cut beans with no flavor/seasoning, whereas in the past they were more like fresh steamed long green beans. -Schnitzel with Red Cabbage, Saurkraut and German Potatoes: the meat itself somehow tasted fried in old oil as opposed to the CFS, with an evenly overdone/burnt appearance and taste. The cabbage and kraut did not look fresh and were sloppily plated. -Mixed Fried Platter of Shrimp and Catfish with Salad Bar and Fried Okra: the Fried Okra received a nice review and was good, the Shrimp were large and tasty, and the catfish "not bad" but definitely not great. The salad bar was a little disappointing, with practically white iceberg as the base and mostly canned items as the toppings. -Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce: Even though this was for a child, it is on their menu (usually served with meatballs which they were out of). Looking at it, it was a sad bowl of bloated noodles and watery sauce that looked no better than a school cafeteria lunch spaghetti. The "pasta sauce" essentially just looked like canned, watery tomato sauce with a few tomato chunks and probably *five* shreds of Parmesan on top. - Chocolate Meringue Pie: I liked the toasty high layer of meringue on this. I guess it could be homemade, but it definitely wasn't the house meringue pie I would look forward to at other places. It did satisfy the sweet tooth of the kiddo though, so it gets an okay review. All in all, I appreciate that the service is still friendly and quick and that the location itself is still a homey stop to grab a booth and a plate of comfort food with family. I think it has lost its touch on the food, though, and the increased prices definitely make it closer to a $20/person restaurant, and it really is not up to par with other restaurants in this price range. But beggars can't be picky, I guess, and the place is relaxed, clean, and has nice individual bathrooms for your pit stop if you're passing through and plenty of parking and pretty oak trees around. read more

Got in for a later lunch at around 1:30 pm. Moderately filled and from the sound of the conversations everyone's a regular. The buffet seems to be what keeps this place packed. It looked fine with the Buffett staples taters, Mac and cheese salad bar and whatever protein that had out. I didn't partake, try not to do buffets whenever possible especially during cold and flu season. Ordered up the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. I was really surprised by the variety and their buffet was looking good. Lots of greasy vegetable side dishes with cfs and baked chicken for the meat selection. I, however got the jalapeño schnitzel with fried green tomatoes as an app. The FGT where interesting because they were dressed with a little marinara and blue cheese crumbles. I liked it. We planned a little day trip to head out to the Columbus and Alleyton area to catch an early glimpse of Union Pacific's Newly restored giant steam engine, the #4014 "Big Boy" locomotive. First and foremost we planned to get there around the 11 to noon hour and eat lunch somewhere. We decided to stop at Schobel's because we had been here veggie and the food was really good!! We ordered off of the menu the first time and had their Chicken Fried Steak with sides of mashed potatoes and green beans. This time we opted to have their daily lunch buffet. They have a really nice salad bar with several choices of salad items. Their main buffet had choices of fried Catfish, baked chicken, and smothered steak. Their vegetables were buttered carrots, steamed squash and zucchini, green beans, Mac and cheese,and pinto beans. The baked chicken was really good and green beans and carrots with sweet tea. I went back and had to try a couple of pieces of the fried catfish which was excellent!!! My wife had almost the same thing with different sides. Our waitress was Janice and she was wonderful and took really good care of us and the rest of her customers! If you're on your way to Austin or San Antonio from Houston and looking for a good place to eat consider Schobel's. A Columbus institution, this place is always hopping during lunchtime. They have a standalone menu but I would recommend the buffet. With a wide variety of choices you can always find something that will satisfy your palate. My favorites were the meatloaf and au gratin type potatoes. I hear the squash casserole was pretty good but didn't get a chance to try it. Dessert offerings range from red velvet cake to Pecan pie to Dutch apple pie and many others. The service was friendly and fast and the ambience lively. Easily accessed off the freeway Schobel's has been around since 1979. TCU is well represented in the place and I felt a bit funny walking in with a Baylor cap.
