As those of you who read my reviews know, I'm always on the hunt for good BBQ, especially in Memphis, KCI and Texas. Having enjoyed Miller's Smokehouse on a recent trip to Temple (4 stars), I thought I'd give this place a go. Boy, did I make a mistake. The meat portions on the combo are tiny, which I should have realized when the locals ordered their lunches by the pound. The brisket, although decent was overlooked and dry, the sausage ordinary at best. The sauce was wattery and non-description. Coleslaw equally ordinary. When in Belton or Temple, head for Miller's. This place looks awesome but looks can be deceiving. The food is out in the pits left to dry and ruins the food. The brisket is dry with decent flavor. The ribs were good but too dry what a shame. The sausage was not to my liking... The sauce was one of the worst things I've ever tasted!!! Won't return for food but maybe to hangout. read more

I cannot get enough of Schoepf's. My personal fave are the brisket nachos! I know, nachos from a BBQ joint? But just TRY them! The pork and beef ribs are perfection. The sides are phenomenal. Prices are getting even pricier while the brisket is getting even less flavorful. I used to get the pork chop plate, but they no longer offer it. You have to buy the chop and side separately, meaning a big increase in price, and the chops seem to be on the dry side more often. They also no longer give you a complimentary side of beans with purchase of meat by the pound, which is really sad. Chops, ribs and chicken are still pretty good, and I really like the slaw and cheesy potatoes, and I love the sauce, but just not for the price. They're charging based on an ancient Texas Monthly write-up when they were under different management with different cooks. I would give it 2 1/2 if I could give a half, but it's not worthy of 3 stars any longer. Drop the prices 40% and it's a 3 star. If you love brisket, it's not even the best in Belton. Go a couple of blocks West and a couple North in the middle of town. Follow the smoke. You'll find it. read more

Every time we go here, the food is excellent! My favorite thing is the brisket and chicken. My husband loves the ribs and the chicken, my son....everything! The sides are delicious as well! I really like the new type of beans yall had out a few weeks ago, I believe they had cilantro and tomatoes in them? VERY TASTY!! Overall, we love the food here and come quite frequently. I have eaten here twice. I do not want to be negative and destroy a business that seems is well liked and successful. My brother moved from Maryland to Temple and found this place years ago. I swear he actually eats here sometimes once a week. When family from out of state visits he takes them here for a meal. So here it goes, strictly my opinion as well as every family member in my family (except my brother)... We dont like it. I have had way better food. Simply I just didnt like the taste of the sauce and the meat was way to dry. I even tried a chopped chicken sandwich which was just tangy and mushy. I see I am in the minority of not really caring for this place. So I hope Schoepfs has no hard feelings on this report of mine. read more

Oh god, I do love Bar-B Que. A co-worker of mine suggested that I go to Schoepf's for a lunch date, and I am very happy I did. We went on a Saturday at lunch, and it was amazing. The food was fantastic! I loved everything I tried. The brisket and the sausage were my favorite. The service was also outstanding. Everyone was quick, and all the staff was smiling, friendly and also seemed to be enjoying themselves. It is completely worth the five stars. Great food and service! Schoepf's has both strengths and weaknesses. For instance, their pulled pork sandwich were perfectly balanced and juicy tasting. The flavor was on the money although, I think their use of a cheap hamburger bun is tacky. Using a higher quality roll would be a total business A plus while, stimulating esurient customer reactions. Next, the brisket had passable flavor but was extremely chewy and dry. It was almost as if they reheated the brisket in the microwave; a restaurant no-no. Then, there are their ribs. I found this staple BBQ item to be dry, tasteless, and chewy. It seems they either weren't fresh or overcooked with zero-to little love. They could have tried to show concern by cooking those ribs in some sort of sauce or dry rub. Following with the green beans, which were passable but not as desirable as Fat Boys' green beans. After that, came the pinto beans whose added fatback and limited seasoning failed to successfully launch this classic BBQ item. Next, the BBQ sauces helped to swallow the unusually dry, chewy bits. I felt the sweet and spicy was the best because it had the right amount of acid to balance the fatty BBQ meats. The regular BBQ sauce was far too smoky and store-bought tasting. Their pickled jalapenos were yummy and hot. Their pickle chips would have fared better as pickle spears. Spears would add an element of bite that pairs well with the BBQ experience. The onions were fresh and sweet. Next, the 4 pieces of cheap, stale, tasteless, white bread did nothing for me. They must keep the bread sealed from air, when in storage. Finally let's review Schoepf's portions. Simply put, the prices do not justify the rationing of their food. I can pay $2.00-$3.00 less a plate at Fat Boys and walk away pleasantly pleased with the portions, flavors and value! In summary, Schoepf's pulled pork was their heavy-hitter. I would buy just their pulled pork and go somewhere else for the rest of my BBQ. Purchase the meat, and pick a quality roll from Panera's Bakery and you've an amazing thing happening. The brisket failed because it was tough and dry. Unfortunately, the ribs were prepared like the brisket. The green beans were ok at best. Same for the pintos. The sweet and hot BBQ sauce was perfectly made. The prices are way too high for the small portions. read more

'Tis the day before Easter, and barbecue is the food item on the agenda. Four of us headed over to Schoepf's for lunch. At the counter, I ordered a $4.95 sausage sandwich. What they do is rev up their electric knife and slice clean through the meat like it was paper. Thick juicy three-inch sausage pieces on slightly tough bread was the result. Moving through the line, friendly personnel offer you barbecue sauce and extras. I opted for a slight dribble of sauce over the sausage topped off by crispy pickles and a side of potato salad. The verdict: Bread was tough and tasteless, but the sausage was tasty with the barbecue sauce giving out a spicy flavor. The crispiness of the pickles added to the flavor of the sandwich. The potato salad was, as they say, ''nothing to write home about." I would also describe it as bland. Nothing was wrong with it except I could barely taste it. The orange Fanta was fresh and cool. Overall, it was an average experience. I would try it again, though, because I've had Schoepf's barbecue once before, and it was delicious. I would definitely not count this place out. read more

If you ever find yourself with time to kill in Belton, I hope you never do, this place isn't bad for lunch. I've had a lot of bbq in my short time here on earth and nothing stood out particularly good or bad. The venison sausage was tasty but the brisket was just ok. This place is a step above an average bbq place in Texas. The reason I dropped them to 3 stars is because of their options when it comes to getting beans. There were two sizes one might consider as individual ordering beans: small and medium. Small resembled the size of a mouth wash cup. No one wanting more than a spit of beans would order a small. Medium provided so many beans that I could feed a small family, a dog, a cat, and two sets of neighbors. And the price was appropriately marked up. Now for barbeque this place gets five stars for one of the best places to eat bbq in Texas. They have a great selection of meat. All smoked in house with mesquite wood. The staff is friendly and great in customer service. If you are passing through Belton, TX this is the place to stop and eat!! You will not regret it well maybe if you are dieting. But you shouldn't feel guilty after feeling full from eating here. Their pies are very sweet and delicious. I love th pecan pie here! read more

Was really craving BBQ on my drive down to San Antonio and my iphone's Urban Spoon thing rolled this place up on the screen. After reading some reviews, I decided to check it out. The ambiance is definitely authentic. They have the pit BBQ thing going on the side of the building and you'll step straight into the BBQ where you order your meats then you step inside to where you can get your sides and drinks. They have a lot of seating space. But as for the food. Eh, well, it's okay. I ordered the sirloin plate and a couple slices of brisket. (I always like to check out the brisket at new BBQ places). Honestly, the sirloin was okay, but it was heavily seasoned with pepper. The brisket - I didn't even recognize as brisket. It was just a gray mass of dry meat - no smokey character whatsoever. The BBQ sauce, honestly is what helped the meat out, otherwise, the meat is nothing special. As far as the sides go. It's pretty much like the meat. Nothing special. Honestly, if it weren't for the ambiance I'd probably be giving this place 2 stars. read more

Schoepf's is truly a Texas original. Having spent my undergraduate years in Belton, I stumbled across this hidden restaurant after I could only stomach so many meals in the dining hall and tequitos from Whataburger. Remember when Mama told you not to judge a book by it's cover, well apply those words of wisdom here because there's definitely not much to look at on the building's exterior except for the red sign baring the name of the restaurant. Step into the door on the right because that's the smoke house where all the meat is prepared in the pit and on the grill. I couldn't resist the combo plate because who can choose only one meat out of brisket, turkey, sausage, ribs, and chicken. My recommendation is the brisket and sausage due to the tenderness and flavor of the meat. Once you get your meat, step to the door on your left which brings you inside the actual restaurant where you'll choose your sides and bread from a roll or jalapeño cornbread. Cheesy potatoes and seasoned green beans are where it's at peeps! Jalapeño cornbread is ok, so I'm not even going to try and sell you on that. Ding ding ding, now you've finally chosen your food and made it to the register where you will pay $8.75 for a small combo plate or $9.75 for the large combo plate. It's kind of pricy BBQ but you can split a large combo plate or take some home for left overs. Certainly, this was a treat on a poor college student's budget. New addition is the back patio which is opened for live music. Haven't experienced it but was told by the staff. Schoepf's you know I'll always come back to dine every time I'm in B-town. read more

I've been many times. They cook BBQ in the style of Cooper's (cowboy style, with the meat over the coals instead of indirect heat). The location is pretty good, as it's only a few blocks off of I 35, so a quick stop when driving between Dallas and Austin is usually feasible. Generally, the BBQ is above average quality, although I wouldn't put it in the category of a Louie Mueller's or Smitty's. The main reason I wouldn't give it higher marks is because the brisket is fairly ho-hum: it is somewhat bland, sometimes a little dry. The sirloin is good, the pork ribs ok. The big pork chop is very good, but pretty pricey. However, their chicken is way above average, and their jalapeno sausage is among the best I have had. They now have quail breasts wrapped in bacon that are pretty tasty. The sides are fine. They have some of the best jalapeno corn bread that I have had outside of home made. They've greatly expanded the seating area, and added a place out back where they have live music. read more

'Meh. I've experienced better' pretty much sums it up. The brisket was dry. The mac n cheese flavorless. The spicy sausage was not spicy. However, the ribs were not too bad. And I really liked the potato salad for some reason. Nothing fancy about it, but it was refreshing. I liked being able to see the guy cut up the meat and weigh it right in front of you. I had the distinct pleasure of visiting Schoepf's on a recent visit to Belton. This really is a classic Texas BBQ place that you'd read about it some travel magazine. You walk in to their newly renovated building and find a counter with PILES OF MEAT BEHIND IT. A couple guys with electric knives slice up what you ask for and you move through the door to phase 2. Phase 2 is where you pick your sides and get some sauce and iced tea. You pay, then eat! I had the brisket and pork ribs. Both were outstanding, while the sides were nothing to write home about. If you're making that Austin to Dallas trip and need some real BBQ, be sure to stop in to Schoepf's. read more

I am sure it was just a 'bad night'. My chopped brisket taco evidently was delivered to another table--they had taken my name, but neglected to use my name when they took it to another table and the patrons at the other table accepted the extra food without question. In the meantime, my date's meal is getting cold and the tortillas are getting dried out/hard. When he went back to the cashier to inquire, they made another taco and handed it to him with no apology. As we left, he pointed out that when A name is requested and written on a ticket, confirming the identity of the receiver when it is delivered would be a good idea. I thought about giving this place a 1 star, but the staff is always friendly. I have been here a dozen times, and each time I eat here I always say " im never going back". It usually friends or family that drag me here, because if it was just me. You would never see me here by myself. EVERYTHING IS SO DRY!!! and that might be a understatement. I have tired almost everything and the best thing there is the quail. Worst is the pork chops (rubber chops) way over cooked. For just the potatoes and the pecan pie I give it a 2 stars. The food was ok! After reading several reviews decided to check it out, but not all it was presumed to be. The pecan pie is flawless! They have the best cheesy potatoes I have ever tasted. The BBQ sauce had a little too much vinegar in it. This BBQ spot is basically that of the typical BBQ chain not really nothing to set it apart from others. Except the deserts! I've been here several times over the years and each time it's completely different, some days brisket's dry, some moist. Sausage is usually pretty good, but the thing that kills me is, their brisket has now reached $11.99 a pound and you have to pay for all the sides. The least they could do is provide beans like some other BBQ places. I also don't like the fact they dole out the bread like it's gold. Just put it on the tables and let everyone get what they want. I guess they have to pay for that huge remodel. There's a BBQ place on every corner of Texas, my advice would be to try others, you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

Did this place for first time, sausage was great, what a flavor, service from counter people was very good and friendly, plus knowledgeable of foods. Ribs had good taste, but we every tough! They were reheated of you ask me from day before, ordered moist brisket and yes moist means juicy with fat! Not the fat cap on it as you can see in the picture, plus electric knives to cut, hmmmm. Not old school! Slaw way to much mayo, if it runs when you eat it, too much, cheesy potatoes were very good. Sauce , if you like vinegar taste you will like it. read more

Oh my gosh, I love Schoepf's. This is what Texas BBQ is all about. You should ALWAYS have to stand in the smokers when you first come in a BBQ place, so you smell like it all day and drive everyone around you crazy. They have great ribs and brisket, and my wife loves the turkey (I know, turkey, whatever). The sides are decent, and the portions are good, but the meat is just perfect, tender and tasty and smoky. Yum. We usually stop by once or twice a year before or after a football game (A&M at Baylor, HS playoffs in Waco, etc.) but I really should go more often than that. It also has the type of look that a real BBQ place should have, nothing fancy. The beers are really cold and they have Big Red, which all BBQ joints should have. I give my wife total credit for introducing me to Schoepf's and will cede one argument a year for that alone. read more

Not enough smoke on the meats to personally satisfy my taste (ribs, brisket, chicken, sausage.) It's quite costly. The taste doesn't justify the price for me. Lacks the consistency of Rudy's smoke in Heights. It's nice and cool on the inside. A real nice place to have lunch and beat the Texas heat. read more

Great BBQ, great sides too. I will definitely be back. I had the brisket and it was superb. 1/2 pound with 2 small sides was plenty of food. The cheesy scallop potatoes were on point, as well the green beans. The BBQ sauce was a bit too vinegary for my taste and unfortunately tonight they only had one option. The dessert selection looked really good, but I didn't have room after a cold one. It was nice to have options for a cold beer as you walk through to the cashier. I had a Shiner but there were 4 or 5 more options as well. The staff was polite and very helpful. read more

Disappointing again. I have loved this place for as long as I can remember and stop in just about every time I pass through Belton, however my recent few visits have not been the same. I don't know who decided to take the plates and chopped Brisket sandwich and move it inside away from the hot serve box but that just kills the whole BBQ vibe of this place. If I wanted to go through the cafeteria line I would go to a cafeteria. I had the venison sausage and a chopped Brisket it was still good. $7.50 for the sandwich seems to be a little expensive as well. The Manager John was beyond extremely rude. When I entered the premises with my service animal, who was wearing his vest, he began to berate me with a line of questioning while I was in line. I simply stated he was a service animal and he then had the audacity to say my animal was not properly trained and asked "What was wrong with me?" Had I told him I was a long term POW prisoner and survived unspeakable horrors would that have sufficed me the right to eat a BBQ plate there with my service animal and family? They don't even offer military discounts. He then demands to see my medical documentation, which I have, but under the ADA I explain I don't have to show him anything nor answer any medical related questions. He refuses service. The owner backed him up. This is not Nazi Germany this is America! I just wanted some BBQ. I'm Surprised being so close to Ft. Hood that they would treat a Military family this way. Happy Holidays. I cant answer for tex mex or breakfast. I came about 330 with my dad. Slow time. No wait. Brisket was good. They didnt ask the preferred choice but no need, I got exactly what I wanted. Venison sausage was great, and I'm not big on sausage. Chicken was good too. Went with regular bbq sauce. Mac n cheese was pretty decent. I like the front rock benches. They should buy a sculpture from Rolando Saenz Monumental Art in Waco. I live in Georgetown. We will be making the trip in the middle for lunch more often. read more

I would give zero stars if possible. Dry brisquit, Bbq sauce that tastes like watery tomato soup out of the can, and not to mention there was a long hair in the bland mac salad. I then noticed that John, the manager, was not wearing a hair net and had very long hair. In my opinion he was rude and didn't seem happy with his job. What happened? This used to be our favorite place up eat. We have been coming here for 3 years. Brisket was cold and the guy didn't know what he was doing. He didn't know how to cut the brisket. They don't offer plates anymore. I bought some seasoning and the guy had an issue with asking if i had a good truck buying the seasoning. Instead of feeling complemented because i love their seasoning. Never again!!! read more
