A visit to this restaurant was on my bucket list. Can a true foodie not visit the oldest restaurant in Texas? No! The restaurant for its claim to fame is very modest and has a warm rustic feel to it. You have a choice of the Bar, main dining area, and the private porch in the back. The food menu offers something for every taste and while they have a full bar the collection of beers on tap is quite good! I on my visit had their "Dunkel Brat" and two pints of the local Pilsners from the "Meanwhile Brewery". The Brat was amazing and you can customize it with the toppings and the type of mustard. My topping choice was caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms with Creole mustard. The service was just fantastic. I decided to sit at the bar and the bartender Bradley was a gem of a person, very attentive and radiated warmth and friendliness. It is difficult to maintain traditions, especially for a restaurant that has been there since 1866, but it is possible by providing your customers great service and simple but good wholesome food at a very good price. Now that is what Scholz Garten does and does extremely well! I am tempted to drive 221 miles from Plano yet again just to dig my teeth into the Brat but more so to experience the service! read more

Kind of surprised after 447 reviews Scholz not has a 3.5 rating. I'm super picky, been to Germany multiple times, Munich Oktoberfest experience and many Many MANY bier Gartens under my belt and Scholz is honestly one of the best in North America I've ever been to. Possibly the best giant pretzel I've had in America, the sausage flight of bratwurst/dunkel brat/weisswurst was great with multiple mustards to try. Live music outside and everyone was super friendly and helpful answering questions. Been there multiple times and always a great experience. They have a beautiful wooden bar and interior seating area for eating as well. It's been there since 1866 making it one of the oldest bars if not the oldest in the state and one of the oldest bier gartens in the United States. Purportedly the oldest Bier garten in the country, visited here when I was in town for work. It was a weekday so it was a bit slow, but the service was great and the food and beer hit the spot. I ordered a pilsner and the Wurst Board. The board came with three different types of sausages, along with sauerkraut (obviously) and pickled cabbage. There were multiple mustards for dipping and it also came with pretzel bites (pro tip, order the beer cheese to dip the pretels in). We also shared the Reuben fries, which were amazing! She gave us tips about where to go and what to see while we were visiting. The restaurant and bar were amazing. Everything was cleans and social distancing with tables and other customers was perfect. Prices for everything were great. We also had the German wurst board. Very good. The soft pretzels are made there and so Is everything else actually. Everything was so good! From the service, to the people, to the food and dips and sides, and atmosphere. Decided to give this place a try for lunch and tried the pastrami burger which was stacked high with a perfectly cooked egg on a delicious pretzel bun which was perfectly paired with their dunkel on draft. Wish I got a picture but it was tasty and would recommend. We sat outside and it was great atmosphere. Wish our server come over a little quicker at times and have us more than 3 napkins but made due with what I had since the burger was on the messy side. Great lunch spot! read more

I just tried the chicken tenders and was extremely disappointed!!! The seasoning was barely detectable, the meat was rubbery, there was a burnt flavor simmering underneath. What a downgrade from the amazing pretzel I usually get. The giant pretzel is 5 stars, tenders are 1 star = overall 3 stars. I want to try the wings but if they're similar to the tenders then we could see an updated 2-star review in the future. All I keep saying about it is, "That pretzel was as big as my ass"...so true. And it was so good! This place is one of the oldest bars in Austin and has been in existence since 1866. It's all that you would expect and hope a German biergarten to be. We dined outside which oddly enough makes sense. It's said that liberal-leaning patrons tend to gather outside whilst Republicans choose to meet inside. The decor and design features really make you feel like you're in Germany. This is a traditional German restaurant with a long history. It started in 1866 and moved to the current location at the turn of the 20th century. Our waiter, Jordan, was very personable and helpful. We ordered a couple of lagers and he also gave us a taste of a darker lager. Both were good but we stuck with the lighter one. The menu has a number of traditional German favorites from sauerkraut to bratwurst to schnitzel. My wife ordered a bratwurst and schnitzel and I ordered a Jaegerschnitzel. We also ordered some sauerkraut balls to share. The food came out fairly quickly. My wife especially liked the schnitzel and sauerkraut. My pork was covered with gravy and mushrooms and was very good. I tried the sauerkraut balls. They may have been good but I've never been one for sauerkraut. We sat outside in the Biergarten. It was pleasant except for the dogs some people had to bring. The music was good, mostly 60's and 70's rock that was played through their speaker system. They had a stage for live music as well, but there wasn't any while we were there. It's good German food and beer at reasonable pricing and surprisingly it's basically on the University of Texas at Austin campus. read more

If you like pretzels, this is the place for you! We ordered the pretzel to start off with, and y'all. It was gooood. Perfect texture, soft on the inside, salted to perfection. And the beer cheese! 10/10 Then we moved on to the wings. There are 4 or 5 sauces to pick from but we picked the house made buffalo sauce, on the servers recommendation. Both the wings and the sauce were perfect. The meat had a smoky flavor which added to its depth. We all know that jackalopes don't exist, but here, Jackalope Sausage does, and I'm really happy about that. The sausage is a mixture of different meats: pork, rabbit, and antelope. We went early on a Saturday because we have two little kids and it was a perfect experience. There were only two or three other tables with people on the patio (the patio is HUGE. Has beautiful lights hanging and great music). Once you are seated you don't have to wear a mask but walking to the bathroom or standing, you need to put it back on. The server was very friendly! He told us all about the history of the garden/restaurant. He brought our food out really quickly even gave us water in kid friendly cups. The food was delicious. 11/10 would come back if I had more time, especially on a cold day. Cozy old-timey German tavern feel (it's been around since the mid 1800s!) with a huge selection of beers. I forget the one I ordered but it was light with some pretty fruity notes which I loved. Our server was Ashley - fantastic service and great recommendations. Of course we had to order the giant pretzel, and it did not disappoint - Ashley recommended eating up the beer cheese with pretzel first as it solidifies as it cools (we hit up Austin on one of the coldest weekends, but the restaurant was nice and toasty!). Don't pass on the sauerkraut balls either! On Ashley's recommendation for what to try if we weren't going to make it back anytime soon, I ordered the Beef Tips with Spaetzel and my sister ordered the Jaegerschnitzel. They both hit the spot!We split both - but there was still plenty to take home. One of the things we're all doing, as the Covid nightmare begins to subside, is check out our old haunts, see if they're still in business. It's a sad exercise 50% of the time (we miss you Shady Grove). So we decided to check in on an old, old...old friend, Scholz Garten. I have so many memories from this place. The drunk night I spent there after Major Applewhite's last home game--he threw the ball into the stands!--the many presidential debates we watched in 2000 and 2004, and all the Longhorn games... Scholz always had friendly staff, an appropriate beer selection, a historic building and great ambiance...but the food was hit or miss. Listen, it was an accepted drawback. Who cared right, it hit on four out of five, and so we went, and often. Well, something strange happened this time! The staff was friendly, as expected. The building was still old, duh, and football was in the TV. But the food, the food was on point! The potato pancakes were a great mix of crispy and soft in the middle, the apple sauce doing its job. The Reuben had a perfect ratio of meat, sauerkraut and dressing (you'd be surprised how many places screw this up) and the jagerschnitzel (spelling?) was freaking special. Five star experience folks. I'm big on burgers and Germany lol (once upon a time, I was going to move there), so when I found out about Scholz I came with a co-worker of mine. We both loved their crisscut fries (I would put them at a tie with Chik-fil-a's actually, they were crunch and not overly greasy) and we were quite content with the actual burgers. You can tell the meat is seasoned well and fresh and not straight from the freezer or anything. It was also a beautiful day so the outdoor tables were packed.
